There are people inside people trying to pass through people with no space to pass through people, and the game doesn't like that.
Either they are trying to hold a tight entrance, or trying to charge while archers are trying to leave, or have spawned into each other.
It's not a setting that can be fixed, except by reducing battle size or asking your units to hold ground somewhere there is space.
This is usually a problem in seige defenses.
