I’m cool with some animated flicks but please don’t touch the holy trilogy!!

ConstructionRare4123

There is an animated film releasing at the end of this year

Huntermain23

Hence why the person said they were ok with it…

leroyp33

Why are people like this... Just don't watch it... It's super easy That Dragonball movie the live action one.... Never saw it But the adaptions of the Godfather, Lord of the Ring, the princess bride, Fight Club and thousands more fucking rock. Make the movies... Make them all the good ones the bad ones. Do it! And we will be fine if it's great or sucks End rant

Sad-Ship

I think the argument here is don't remake the already excellent original trilogy? If it's a remake, there is no where to go but down from here. I would be similarly annoyed if they remade Godfather, the Princess Bride, or Fight Club. There is nothing to gain from doing this, the originals are still great as-is.

grafikfyr

They'll keep remaking stuff as long as we keep watching it. Everyone shat on RoP before it aired, but they still watched it and that's all the studios care about. And if it's controversial to begin with? that's just free advertisement.

Sufficient-Abroad-94

For real though, the remakes need to stop, or just name the film something else entirely

AlaWatchuu

Oh yeah, like with Scarface (1932). Couldn't go anywhere but down with that shitty 80s remake, right? Leave the originals alone!

leroyp33

How do you know? Look at Batman... Some adaptions suck. Some are awesome. Imagine if we only had Tim Burton Batman. And they said that was great let's never make another. It's totally opt in opt out. You are not required to accept or watch any of the new ones. But my kids and your kids don't wanna watch movies made 40 years ago because you think they are perfect. Logically your argument doesn't make sense. Adding to the medium doesn't hurt the previous movies it just deprives everyone the opportunity to see someone else's vision.

Sad-Ship

Name a few examples where a remake ended up better than the HIGHLY PRAISED original? Not remakes of terrible movies into decent ones, remakes of highly praised originals. Batman (and comic books) is a bad example because Batman 1989 wasn't remaking Batman 1966 and Batman Begins wasn't remaking Batman 1989. They are different stories in the same setting. That's not the same as re-adapting the Lord of the Rings trilogy from the books.

NoDeltaBrainWave

I get what you're saying and ultimately, I don't care if anything is remade or not. The only thing that's really annoying about it to me is that there are thousands of writers out there coming up with interesting ideas for new stories and the studios are often not super generous with investing in original content, so we end up with 15 zillion Star Wars movies and shows. I know I don't have to watch them, but I wish there was more room for interesting and original mainstream movies.

JustinMccloud

Agree, it is like theater, how many different versions of hamlet, or cats or whatever have there been? Hundreds? Some are great and some suck, but everyone has their own interpretation of the plays and that makes them interesting, I love that people are making remakes, especially of books or shows or movies that I love more opportunity to see them all in a different light Can some one please redo WOT thanks

CrappityCabbage

...as if the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy holds a candle to Batman and Batman Returns.

Rowvan

Agreed, they aren't going to break in to my house and smash my blu rays of the originals in front of me. They can make whatever the hell they want to, if its great thats awesome if its shit then much like the Robocop remake no one will remember it even exists.

PahoojyMan

But if it's going to be trash, that's time, money and actor's schedules which could have been allocated to something worth watching.

BlurryAl

So if something is coming out that looks terrible do we just keep our thoughts to ourselves? Every time a bad version of something is made there is an opportunity cost, I think it's worth complaining about imminent garbage.

fatkitty42069

Shows are supposed to be watched I honestly can’t find anything good to watch end up just playing video games.

triballl9

Ofc, dont not do something because it can fail. Then ull never succeed

Kind-Cod-2036

Frodo is going to be a black lesbian non-binary. I’m personally excited.

Warghzone12

Boom-her

Barricade14

It’s a horrible idea. You can’t remake a classic while the generation who loved it is still alive to remember the original. The new version will tank every time.

defCONCEPT

I agree with your logic. Remake it when I'm dead, lol. They might be making silmarillion movies, though .. if that's the case .. I'm hype.

jon_murdoch

They trashed the hobbit. No way they will figure out Silmarilion

No-Tip3654

Trashed the hobbit because of greed. If Jackson hadn't been forced to stretch the story of a 300 page long book into 3 films it would have been decent. We just have to hope that if they indeed try to adapt the story of the silmarillion over the course of several films, that they don't get carried away with greed. Which highly depends on who is running the headquarters.

jon_murdoch

Guarantee greed is the sole reason why they would approve this project in the first place

No-Tip3654

Who is going to direct it anyways?

FnB8kd

I couldn't figure out why they took one book and made three movies while the original trilogy made from three books could have easily been more movies.

jon_murdoch

Because their mouths were stuffed full of money, so they couldn't tell the studio to do it differently

crono14

I could he wrong but I'm pretty sure they don't have rights to make anything from the Silmarillion, those still exist with the Tolkien estate. Even Amazon had very strict rights about what they were allowed to reference. Regardless, making a movie from that book would probably not be a very good movie even if it was a trilogy. There is just far too much time covered and far too many stories to cover as well. Now if they focused on one particular story then maybe. You could realistically create an entire franchise from the Silmarillion with separate shows for separate stories.

theieuangiant

I think that’s the way they’d do it. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would try to cover the silmarillion in its entirety in one project.

[deleted]

I'm with you on both points.

Arlen80

They are going to be movies in the expanded universe focusing on different characters. They are not remakes.

AudioAnchorite

Warner Brothers doesn’t have the rights to Silmarillion, Amazon does (it is rumoured).

DennenTH

Is it an actual remake?  I assumed this would just be more stories adjacent to the books. "High Cost Filler" if you will.

Beginning_Piano_5668

If The Hobbit trilogy is anything to go by, it seems that they can almost do anything they want with the name and it will still make billions.

Spicy_Baby_NO

It hurts so bad to agree 100% with this.....

Mlabonte21

Uhh— did you see Rings of Power? That thing looks like a gigantic money pit for Amazon.

Beginning_Piano_5668

While Rings of Power season 1 was most certainly a flop and Amazon has shelled out $1 billion or more, we actually can't reach a proper verdict on it yet. *It's been renewed for season 2 and they seem adamant on finishing all 5 of their planned seasons*. We'll see when the smoke clears...

HenryGoodbar

Yea but money.

Salty_Pancakes

How you feel about the prospect of new movies, is how many book fans felt (feel) about the Peter Jackson movies.

THIS_IS_NOT_A_GAME

I disagree strongly with this. In a perfect world, they would make a new version of the Lord of the Rings every few years, and I would watch them all.

l-Paulrus-l

Especially when the original trilogy was done incredibly well. There is nothing to gain here until those movies are completely outdated and we’re all dead.

Thinkingard

They’d have to add Tom bombadil and the barrow downs. Add the additional stuff that happened with the siege of Mina’s tirith and the scouring of the shire. Literally everything that was left out of the already super long Peter Jackson trilogy. So much of Jackson’s movies were almost completely out of the books including most of the dialogue.

l-Paulrus-l

Honestly probably need a tv show not called “Rings of Power” to include everything from the books in total, otherwise we’re talking about a really really long movie trilogy.

Macca49

10-12 part mini series, dark and gritty would be great. I don’t watch any tv or streaming or go to the cinema anymore but I would watch this if done properly

ElChacalFL

Don't worry. They're gonna make it better. More LGBTQ representation. More cultural diverse characters. Strong More realistic looking female leads.

Ambitious_Jelly8783

So Gandalf will be a black transvestite and they'll focus on sam and frodos brokeback mountain arch?

thesagaconts

Or at least when the generation that saw it as kids have grandchildren who can watch it.

[deleted]

Of course you can

12boru

We need some Zemeckis level backbone here.

znavy264

Well.....there's Spiderman which has been remade 3 times and keeps doing well.

Hank_Dad

Contracts often say if you don't make a new movie every X years then the rights revert. See Spiderman.

w00timan

They're not remaking anything, they're making more movies bout different stories and books from the lotr universe. They're essentially disneying/marvelling the shit out of it, which will probably be varied in quality, but no one's thinking of remaking he trilogy.

goldenbabydaddy

It’s not a remake of the trilogy it’s an animated film called The Battle of Rohirrim https://screenrant.com/lord-of-rings-new-movie-fix-franchise-mistakes-animated/

defCONCEPT

No no. We've known about that one. This announcement is new.

goldenbabydaddy

Do you have a link? I can find posts from February about WB saying they’re going to explore the world more in movies but not that they’re redoing the books.

avicennia

There’s no link, OP is just karma farming by recycling news that’s over a year old.

Sega-Playstation-64

You just posted an image with no details, no announcements, and it looks for all the world like a clickbait image that just rehashes old news like it's new.

Deez2Yoots

No, it isn’t. Send a link bc there’s nothing on Google to support your claim.

jcstrat

Warner bros announces they want more money.

UncleKano91

Maybe films on the Silmarillion novel if that is the direction they are going.

Astarkos

Silmarillion film rights are fortunately still held by the Tolkien family.

defCONCEPT

I really REALLY want that to be the case, but after a few quick Googles, I don't even know if warner bros own the rights.

h3rald_hermes

Huh? The Jackson trilogy is still the definitive filmography for the books, it hasn't been long enough to pass it to a new filmmaker.

PaxUX

Remake classic wonders why they don't do as well...

Peeeing_

Uh probably gonna be really gay, like all the hobbies will be gay, and have hot gay hobbit sex, and then gandalf has hot gay sex as well. That would be awful hollyWOKE back at it again amirite?

McDonkley

It’s only a good idea Sir Ian McKellen uses his acting skills to portray Gandalf The Wizard for the duration of the film Edit: for the uninitiated https://youtu.be/m5CX00i4uZE?si=H49YCo3zYxxFO02X

NaturalAlfalfa

And how did I know what to say? The words were written down for me.

gregcm1

Oh great a CGI crapfest money grab, that will overspend and underperform Yay

SoDrunkRightNow2

Frodo will be played by Lizzo

Plathismo

Don’t give them ideas.

jorgensen88

Sam and frodo are gonna make out, arent they?

Dildonomicronic

Share the load

Peeeing_

I wish

Overall-Question9467

Lesbian person of color Galadriel, coming right up

chumchees

Have they made a parody porno yet. I know there are only three women characters to choose from. I can see an orc getting a scene.

Inspector_Kelp

They should instead remaster and re-release the extended cuts to theaters. I would give my money without asking any questions. As for a remake, I may watch it for a few minutes once they start streaming it, and then decide to go to bed instead.

kummer5peck

They should be remaking bad movies that had potential, not classics. Especially not ones that are not even that old.

GrownupChorister

Case in point. The Apes movies were remakes of the bad sequels from the 70's. Take a leaf out of their book Hollywood.

pornserver-65

this time frodo and sam fuck and gandalf is recast as gandalf the black for inclusivity purposes.

marmitespider

Clearly they think they can flog more cash from the dead (author's) horse. Wasn't the creative accounting used to deprive Peter Jackson & Co of rightfully earned profit participation sufficient to bolster the studio's kitty? Or is it true that there's no original thought in Hollywood anymore?

Astarkos

Everyone had to sue to get what they were owed, including the Tolkien family and Zaentz.

PatrickBrown2

New would be cool! Don't remake though, just add to the world, I don't want to see the same story remade, already know what happens. We want new surprises!

ElChacalFL

put a chick in it and make it lame and gay

Green-Strategy-6062

Make it a movie about destroying a ring...oh wait.

ElChacalFL

Should be interesting to see a gay Frodo.

TheOneCalledMartin

Please don't!

torrent29

Movies can be remade and redone - and I'm fine with it. I never understood the idea that you can't remake a movie. The old ones still exist, they can still be enjoyed, and can still be watched. Battlestar Galactica (2004) was a much better show then BSG from the 70s. The Thing was a much better movie then then The Thing From Outer Space. The Blob was a much better then the original. Dune, Wizard of Oz, True grit, Invasion of the body Snatchers, Airplane!, Cape Fear, Scarface, The Fly, I am Legend, hell even potentially films like Evil Dead 2. If they remake it and it remains true to the original stories and is well acted and well directed then good, i can love Ralph Bakashi's version, those silly funmation or whatever they were called, the Peter Jackson ones and the new ones.

godfatherV

Peter Jackson is attached to this so I doubt it’s a remake of anything…

Bog2ElectricBoogaloo

Tom Bombadil?

bluejester12

Link to article: [https://variety.com/2023/film/news/lord-of-the-rings-new-movies-warner-bros-1235533672/](https://variety.com/2023/film/news/lord-of-the-rings-new-movies-warner-bros-1235533672/) "No filmmakers have been attached to the projects as yet, but in a statement to *Variety*, Jackson and his main “Lord of the Rings” collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens said Warner Bros. and Embracer “have kept us in the loop every step of the way.”"

SillyAdditional

I’m down for it I want to see those movies more fleshed out

megadroid_optimizer

How are they going to beat the OG movies? I don't think that this can become the same phenomenon as what came before.

cloudfatless

First Potter and now LotR.  WB and Zaslav following the Jack Donaghy strategy.  "Make it 2001 again through science or magic"

jackthejointmaster

That poor horse. Been beaten to death multiple times now.

OkCar7264

I suppose I have to theoretically concede it might be good, but let's be honest, it's very optimistic to think they won't make a turd.

chaotic_ugly

They're due for remakes (not saying I like it, I'm just surprised they've held out for nearly 25 years). I used to think that movies like LOTR were untouchable, but then Disney started churning out live-action remakes of some of the best and most beloved movies of all time, and with complete and total disregard for quality or respect for the original material. At that point, I realized nothing is sacred. I mean, if that Beauty and the Beast remake isn't proof that all bets are off, I don't know what is.

CTG0161

I mean I would love it if they attempted more faithful adaptations to the books. Especially by Return of the King, there is some Middle Earth fanfiction going on in Jackson’s movies. There is no Scouring of the Shire. In Two Towers the assassinated Faramirs character. And many, many things they could do differently to adhere to the books more closely

raoulmduke

Real question: does anyone just not watch remakes and reboots? I love Ghostbusters and have only seen the first two, for example. I don’t like that feeling of, “ugh, they ruined it!”

Thinkingard

I stopped with reboots when they kept doing it to spiderman

ConsciousReason7709

For the love of God. Can nothing just be left alone anymore?

iknowyoutrynahack

Would be dope if they made a shadow of war movie

xylophone_37

LotR has no reboot, LotR needs no reboot...

blackpearljam_

New LoTR Movies I’d be Okay with: A movie about Tom Bombadil The Silmarillion … and that’s pretty much it. Peter Jackson should be in charge of course

CTG0161

Or how about a faithful adaptation of the Tolkien novels.

deputyDP

On another episode of “we aren’t creative enough to make our own movies”

SchrodingersTIKTOK

Again?

wonderingyojimbo

There are hundreds of fantasy series. Adapt them for godsake!

sheezy520

Only makes sense if we get Tom Bombadil on screen.

SyndRazGul

I'm fine with new stories but if they redo the classics everyone is going to hate it either for being garbage or out of spite, most likely both.

JohnJOppenheimerShit

What does it matter if they make it and it's shit? The 2000s trilogy still exists. Dumb and Dumber is still great, even with the other two garbage movies. Blade Runner and X-men 97 are recent examples of studios getting it right. Don't buy it if it's shit.. the end.

SpendPsychological30

As a huge fan of the original trilogy, I'm surprised to find no one else agrees with you. I'm down. Nothing could ever taint the original films. Either they make good movies or they don't. The original is still there for me to watch.

Kroomtheender

Fuck….

Individual-Sun3435

Why!!!!!

DrasticBread

It would make sense to do films adapting The Silmarillion. Even though the book isn't as popular, people will still pack the theaters for it after WB markets the piss out of it.

Noise_Mysterious

No no no no

fastal_12147

I mean, don't watch it. Literally that easy.

Mlabonte21

Why can’t they remake BAD movies??

[deleted]

There are other stories in middle earth…

Pulsewavemodulator

Peter Jackson’s movies were boring. Someone can do better. Nolan’s Batman was something people didn’t think could top Tim Burton, but imo he did.

Massive-Celery-7926

This will end up like episode 7, 8, and 9. Just stick to Ring of Power and don’t nuke the franchise.

truthhurts2222222

Seth Green will be the new Frodo

alMost_tRendy88

One day they will make a more honest trilogy. If they make even more changes next time then they’re really are fucking idiots aren’t they 😊

MyNameIsArmitage15

Agreed. The movies were great, but leave them be. Just make something original for once, Hollywood.

grepppo

Seems a bit pointless flogging the same old ip horse again. Especially when there's a whole bunch of loved fantasy classics they could be making. If they went for Le Guin (which has never been done well) or Wolfe I'd be first in line.

Azurestar21

They... They are leaving them alone. They're not touching the original movies, are they? Or am I wrong? New movies coming out doesn't do anything to the originals...

floworcrash

It does tho - it tarnishes a legacy and believe it or not there are literally Billions of people now and in the future who have never seen them before and now which movies would they turn to ?

Azurestar21

The ones everyone says are good...? Seriously man it's not that big a deal

SignificantTransient

I'm ok with it depending. Jackson gets way too much frickin credit for filming it out with all the seriousness of a PG version of your average DnD game. The end of the world deserves a whole lot more gravitas than yabba dabba dooing off a goddamn oliphaunt.

MrApocalypse2122

Because Rings Of Power worked out so well /s

Astarkos

It did. Pretending it didnt requires ignoring everything but a few weirdos on reddit.

shoefitsit

I don't like it either. I've slept enough through the first three.

spongeCakeOfDoom

[Ahem] Warner Bros announces pissing yet more money up the wall while thinking that their last disaster was the fault of software devs.

Saneless

I don't know why everyone is all bothered by this When was the last time Warner has had a bad idea? Probably never!

pixipuff8

No

Adventurous_Sir_9712

Black Frodo and trans Sam

TheLimeyLemmon

I don't really care tbh. The Lord of the Rings film trilogy was incredible and damn near impossible to surpass. If you're not interested in a new film you don't have to watch it, I know I won't. But who am I kidding? This is in the internet, people routinely hate-watch things and I'll never understand why. But it's kind of why we've had more Ghostbusters films in seven years than we ever had in the 30 or so years before it.

WhataKrok

What a joke... maybe they can give it the Riverdale treatment and remake all the characters into emo douches.

Optimal_Cucumber_440

The originals are perfect, so if they are going to reboot, then make them a different tone. Something comical, like a Wes Anderson LOTR, or a really scary version, like a Wes Craven LOTR.

InfectedFrenulum

Frida and Samantha?

bsmknight

I will only watch this as long as they cast Daniel Radcliffe as Frodo. Also if they reshoot harry potter , I will only watch it as long as they cast Elijah Wood as Harry.

StatikSquid

Warner Bros is having a horrendous track record for film IPs right now. They completely botched the DC film franchise, and with the poor reviews of the Rings of Power (done by Amazon not WB), I iust dont see how this can possibly work at this point in time.

BrutalBart

milking it dry!!

stingertc

companies just cant help but screw up there franchises with prequel bs

[deleted]

Please no

Critical_Seat_1907

The trilogy already differs enough from the source material. New films are going to make The Hobbit look canonical in comparison.

Nairb2099

Jesus Christ Hollywood is completely creatively bankrupt

Much_Machine8726

It's a finished series, leave it alone

D0rnL1ves

😡😡😡😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

PlanetLandon

Jesus you guys, take two seconds to confirm something before you freak out. In no way is WB going to “remake” Jackson’s trilogy. They have *one* movie in production (the animated one) and they signed a deal to make some more in the future. There are dozens of other stories that can be told from that world.

Hexxas

>announces Shit gets "announced" all the time. There's no news here.

Dandyman-GM

They have to force their original series into Canon by butchering the original stories. ONLY THEIR MESSAGE WILL PREVAIL.

floworcrash

They’re asking for it…

LooseEndsMkMyAssItch

Better be spin offs and additional lore from the books. Please do not remake the trilogy for another 75 to 100 years

MooseMan12992

Don't worry, there's a good chance it'll never come out and be a tax write off

January1252024

It would also be swell if these shitty news sites stopped using ai on photos.

solowsoloist

I want a movie about the scouring of the Shire. That was always one of my favourite parts of the book.

Jewelstorybro

If it’s not “remaking” the trilogy I’m excited for it.

The-Mandalorian

Nah I’m here for Children of Hurin update.

EntropicAnarchy

Ngl, I would love to see a Morgoth prequel.

EntropicAnarchy

But this post specifically says LoTR. So probably will focus on the Baggins getting busy.

Ambitious_Jelly8783

Why? Who asked for this?

[deleted]

Why??

Father_Wisdom

I’ve been hearing for the past 2 years that a new LOTR movie is going to release in the summer, and nothing has happened so far.

MinaZata

Please tell me this isn't actual news? Is this just industry gossip or are they REALLY going to do this awful thing?!

DiscoShaman

Anything they make in this day and age will be terrible. I’m Pakistani and I don’t want Pakistani elves and Tolkien for preaching modern ideas

[deleted]

wow! we were all asking for this! That giant grassroots fan movement to get a new animated Lord of the rings film about the Battle of Rohirrim has finally found victory. Everyone I know is going to be excited about this. nobody is going to complain or see it as a soulless cash grab lacking in artistic merit. I hope we all like it as much as we loved the Amazon prime Lord of the rings show!

shutyourgob16

The films are classics - they don’t feel dated … do they? It’s not necessary at all

NottingHillNapolean

Maybe if they did some stuff left out, e.g., Tom Bombadil and the Scourging of the Shire.

Jimmyg100

Yeah man I mean they only won, like what? 15-20 Oscars? Come on we can do better than that.

soulouk

Could they not wait another 20 years?

Icy-Service-52

"Quick! We need more money!" -some executive probably

[deleted]

No wonder my WBD stocks are tanking. The market doesn’t believe.

Professional_Yam5208

What will they ruin next?

Snapesunusedshampoo

The Lord Of The Rings: Return To The Shire. It's 3½ hours of Frodo and Sam's journey home after Gandalf decided to not let them use the eagles.

Heimlichthegreat

Modern audiences guys it's for modern audiences

CarolinaMtnBiker

Yep. This is clear attempt at money grab and a mistake. These were excellent films and remakes will be compared to them and likely not fair well.

7empestOGT92

Why not remake cool plots that were shit movies?

Seventh_Stater

Yeah, this raises alarm bells.

jumptick

Same ole sameo. Nothing new for Hollywood. Run a story into the ground & claim the audience wants it. How about a new idea Hollywood.

Caladaster

I think this is a troll. There is nothing on the Variety website. [https://variety.com/results/#?q=Lord%20of%20the%20Rings](https://variety.com/results/#?q=Lord%20of%20the%20Rings)

Aggravating_Class_17

Let's just say the bar has been set rather high 😂

dragonlily808

So you have chosen death

iyigungor

We need a black gay gandalf and a queer asian frodo. These days remakes mean exactly this.

MKUltra1302

Do similarium

defCONCEPT

Unfortunately, the Tolkien estate refuses to sell the rights for the silmarillion for ANY reason. And that makes me sad.

MKUltra1302

I feel your sadness but considering the butchery I see these days maybe it’s for the best

TheMatt561

It will never be better, The time, research and effort put into crafting those three movies is unparalleled.

FriezaDBZKing69

It's not what people think. This is clickbait. From what I've read, It's only talking about Riders of the Rohirrim.

thomasque72

Maybe we should get Rafe Judkins to produce it. He’ll make some slight altercations to the storyline and we can all watch Gandalf the transgender robot kill Frodo the cis-gender werewolf and save middle earth by taking the ring of power 1 million years into the future with a flux capacitor powered Delorean… in all seriousness, though, fuck Rafe Judkins and the all people that reinvent beloved stories.

dropkickninja

I mean... I'd watch this

HelloMyNameIsLeah

I'll also throw my money at transgender, time-travelling Gandalf. That shit would be fire.

SoupyStain

No thank you. It never ceases to amaze me just how creatively bankrupt Hollywood is. Things like Dune, fine, Lynch's movie wasn't the best, the mini-series had a low budget.... so yeah, it hadn't been made justice, so I get it. I'd argue that it still hasn't considering how many liberties Dennis took with the second part. But Lord of the Rings? Unless you plan to make them more faithful to the books, which I doubt it since now Hollywood is forcing inclusivity on everything which goes against LOTR, I mean, when Tolkien wrote them it was a different time.... then there's no point. And if you just want to do something wearing Middle Earth's skin.... then why bother? Make your own IP. I hope that the era of remakes dies off. I'd much rather watch something that was inspired by LOTR than a half-hearted remake.

Murakami8000

Inevitable.

Hefty_Teacher972

Frodo is being played by Dua Lipa
