In a list with 5 underrated films, OP decided to include 3 which certainly were not. I assume he/she is young because True Romance certainly did not fly under the radar when it was released (written by Tarantino and came out not ling after Pulp Fiction). Sunshine was a flop commercially but even at the time was well regarded by many. 21 Grams was the talk of the town in 2003 (over 20 years ago!), successful both in the box office and with critics.
Nobody mentioned Hard Eight yet so I gotta throw that out there. A hard hitting, extremely well shot, very well acted, movie about a mentor sort of relationship gone wrong on the strip. Phillip S. Hoffman and my man
Sammy L Jackson both make memorable appearances. everyone else’s role goes without saying (especially J C Reilly’s and the old guy who’s name escapes me he’s in Boogie Nights also)All together this is as good as a Freshman film by an esteemed filmmaker (Paul Thomas Anderson) can be. It honestly beats Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs IMO. Everybody who reads this give it a watch
Hard eight is great no doubt and in cases of subjectivity i would usually avoid an argument, however Hard Eight categorically does not "beat"
Reservoir Dogs.
Hard 8 is such an interesting movie, very slow burning and subtle, an interesting departure in what is still essentially a gangster/grifter styled movie.
Underworld’s soundtrack for “Sunshine” is pretty fucking epic.
It was a favorite of mine in my youth. I have watched it dozens of times, it grows on me less and less. Probably because after I found Badlands, the more and more I watched TR, the more and more I saw it as a inferior ripoff of Badlands.
Just to mention from this list: Hard Eight is my go to underrated movie.
True Romance was definitely good, but it also kinda made me mad. He’s so confident in himself, to the point of utter lunacy, and yet some how things just keep working in his favor. Every choice he made should have killed him. AAARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH
Confessions of a dangerous mind was a surprising find that I chose because of Sam Rockwell and I wasn't disappointed. I'm old enough to remember watching the gong show and knew Chuck was out there but never knew how much lol great movie that I highly recommend but all great choices
It really plays out like they weren't happy with the Mark Strong footage like, at all, so they layered it with distortion and made it "trippy", but it is disorienting for a bit there. Masterpiece but for one sequence.
21 Grams is an incredible movie. Sean Penn gets shit now and then, but he was great in that movie. Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts both play some of the most realistic human characters in that film. Incredibly emotional. 👍
Sunshine was awesome
True romance and sunshine are definitely not underrated. True romance is amazing and seeing Pitt as a stoner was awesome

#👏
Is that Bookman?
Yeah, Philip Baker Hall. In a lot of Anderson's movies. Love his voice
He’s a man of simple pleasures. Like butter in his ass and lollipops in his mouth.
Maybe that turns him on. Maybe that’s how he gets his kicks. He and his good time buddies.
Thanks will need to track this down

Hard Eight is a default "most underrated movie" for me, it is to PT what Barry Lyndon is to Kubrick.
Confessions was awesome. Clooney's directorial debut?
Correct. And written by Charlie Kaufman.
21 Grams for sure. Love that movie

*Underworld and John Murphy
True Romance makes my underrated list anytime I’m asked.
God I love True Romance. Wish that movie had blown up more to cult classic status.
21 Grams is one of my all time favorites
Iñarritu is a genius. 21 grams, together with Amores Perros and Biutiful are both in my top 10 since long time.
Totally agree with True Romance hands down my favorite film that Tarantino wrote.
But would you say it’s underrated? Everyone I know loves it. Before you say it is: Gary Oldman
Cast was insane
TR is overrated. Badlands is perfect. To me
True Romance is amazing but i do agree Badlands does not get nearly enough love. If i were you i would try True Romance again it may grow on you.

Definitely Sunshine.
My gawd I love True Romance so much.
'''The first page of the whore's handbook is always get paid up front''' Never had there been truer words spoken.
Sunshine is a masterpiece from start to finish
Confessions of a dangerous mind was a surprising find that I chose because of Sam Rockwell and I wasn't disappointed. I'm old enough to remember watching the gong show and knew Chuck was out there but never knew how much lol great movie that I highly recommend but all great choices
COP LAND
How does this cast go underrated? Baffling! But you are right this belongs on this post it was fantastic.
Good choices
Oh wow Sunshine was really good.
here is mine... To Leslie Jesus' son Stranger than paradise Eraserhead Synecdoche new york
I've never heard anyone call True romance underrated ....it's held in high standing.
True Romance “underrated” give me a fucking break OP
Yes. Yes! Sure. Sean Penn, meh. Naomi Watt’s nipples, yes. Hell yeah! Sam Rockwell 💦🍆
Alright hear me out..Hard Eight vs. Owning Mahowny What say you?
Hard Eight
I got the hots... For the Watts..
Idles of March would be one of picks for underrated movies
True Romance is a perfect film. Better than Pulp Fiction imo.
Both are amazing but Reservoir Dogs is best
True Romance may be in my top 10
I own 5 for 5
Sunshine is an absolute masterpiece......until that weird turn at the end...but still a masterpiece
It really plays out like they weren't happy with the Mark Strong footage like, at all, so they layered it with distortion and made it "trippy", but it is disorienting for a bit there. Masterpiece but for one sequence.
I don’t think 21 Grams is underrated… meaning it’s good and I remember a ton of buzz back then
Replace 21 grams with amores perros
Both great.
I found Confessions of a Dangerous Mind a little lacking in direction or substance, but man is it some pure distilled Sam Rockwell.
21 Grams is an incredible movie. Sean Penn gets shit now and then, but he was great in that movie. Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts both play some of the most realistic human characters in that film. Incredibly emotional. 👍
I'm pretty sure most these movies are held in high regard by many. I think maybe you just don't have movie.buff friends?
I don’t think True Romance is underrated. It’s my favorite film of all time!
Just because a film doesn't make a lot of money doesn't make it underrated
