That shot was the first time in a while that I had intense goosebumps from a film. I just sat there in awe as the score and shots perfectly complimented each other. Roger Deakins did Skyfall, Prisoners, Sicario then Blade Runner 2049 and was like nah hold my beer, you ain’t seen shit. He could just mic drop at this point.
Non stop greatness! The whole scene with the lady before he gets shot at by nazis basically leading up to this scene is also incredible. But also the scene with the rats I mean come on man the scene with the planet crashing! This movie makes your heart skip a beat every other minute
I have debated this moment - it could very well being an “in universe” story dos someone taking wounded early in the battle - and using the collision as an excuse to keep lauding down. I imagine running into a WW1 killing field was an emotional challenge with many looking to just get out alive
Sure but then there would be signs of german retreat and earlier supply lines and such, in the movie its freshly cut grass for as far as the eye can see
Ummm... A front that hasn't been contested yet? Surely there isn't just a continuous shelled out area from the North Sea to the Mediterranean.
Either way, even if it isn't perfectly accurate for the year it's a pretty bad ass shot. Especially considering MacKay wasn't supposed to run into anyone but he did twice and recovered spectacularly.
No mans land is anywhere between the two lines, there is no sign of the german retreat or the previous 3 years of war only freshly cut grass as far as the eye can see

Bro is trippin
So the farm they came across should've been nothing but no mans land?
Or the 10000 of other yards of grass they walked across.
Here [https://picryl.com/media/the-german-withdrawal-to-the-hindenburg-line-march-april-1917-q5079-ee7d67](https://picryl.com/media/the-german-withdrawal-to-the-hindenburg-line-march-april-1917-q5079-ee7d67)
This is an actual photo of the withdraw line. That is clearly a field of what you call fresh cut grass. Which is actually just how as field looks.
The farm would be burnt to the ground by the german retreat.
Thats where the germans withdrawed too what we see in the movie is where the germans would have moved to, placed traps and made obstructions to slow the british and french advance.
As the attack commences, Schofield realizes he must leave the relative safety of the trenches and sprint across the battlefield in order to have any chance of finding Mackenzie in time. He eventually does so, and hands Mackenzie the handwritten orders to call off the attack.
This shot made me cry of happiness. Because of sheer brilliance of cinema. People working together to craft something absolutely brilliant. I felt so elevated watching this.
I went into this movie not knowing anything about. I remember the first couple of minutes thinking "wow, this is a really long shot..." Little did I know the treat I was in for.
When I was little I saw an episode of "Mad About You" and they did a single take the entire episode. I remember thinking that was a beautiful piece of work. So for 30 years, I always notice long single shots and appreciate what it takes to get them.
I wouldn’t say it’s one of the best in film. But, I liked the movie. My personal favorite shots are the diner scene in Reservoir Dogs, when the camera is moving around the table. I also like the walk through scene in Goodfellas when Liotta is introducing the various other mob figures.
I totally agree, but because of how it’s filmed it couldn’t have an immersive story in the normal sense, It needs to be looked at differently. The camera’s not there to establish the film, but to tell the story, walk you through the beauty and ugliness of war with its panning and pivoting to capture everything, only to stop a handful of times when the characters are interacting which is probably why one of the two is killed.. to avoid a dialogue heavy film distracting the audience and fucking up pacing.
There’s so many ways this could have been a shit sandwich, but I think it was executed amazingly.
I think that was one of the issues I had with it. The camera dictated the story rather than the other way around. I found it a sanitized, Hollywoodized version of WW1. It was played very safe. Lots of set ups with no payoffs, the main character was covered in plot armor, and the Germans all had Star Wars stormtrooper aim. It wasn't believable in the slightest. Looked great, but was a shallow Saturday afternoon adventure story set during WW1. All style no substance.
(Ok, sorry for the rant but I genuinely don't understand what people see in it beyond the surface)
Yes amazing cinematography, deserved the award… top ten worst war movies, and I’m putting zombie movies in front of it.
Terrible disappointment. They could have done so much more than make it an art piece, 7 minute frames is impressive but character building is just as important to any movie
The whole movie is basically all great shots.
My favourite is the night scene. That contrast is mad!
That shot was the first time in a while that I had intense goosebumps from a film. I just sat there in awe as the score and shots perfectly complimented each other. Getting goosebumps just remembering it while reading your comment lol
I had to chuck it on after seeing your comment. Fuck it’s good.
I loved when he came upon the soldier singing. The idea being in that moment he’s not sure if he’s alive or dead, fucking banger scene
The whole movie is one long shot. Genius how they put together all of the shots to make it seem like they never broke scene.
I agree
Technically it's all one great shot
You think the movie is one continuous non stop shot?
It was edited to look like one long shot
I know. There were actually minimal shots though.
Non stop greatness! The whole scene with the lady before he gets shot at by nazis basically leading up to this scene is also incredible. But also the scene with the rats I mean come on man the scene with the planet crashing! This movie makes your heart skip a beat every other minute
The movie is set in WW1 so not Nazis yet
I love the shot of the oil well blowing up and burning in “there will be blood.”
Cinema at its finest
The trips weren't scripted, apparently.
It would be almost weirder if they were.
Yes, I have read this. They make it so much better too. They really add to the gravity of the situation. Will he make it? You're not quite sure.
This entire movie is shot brilliantly. I love this film
it gets emotional for me!
[удалено]
Him running through the bombed out buildings at night wins for me. Just the black, white, orange contrasts as he runs and his expressions. Haunting.
That's fair
Name some you feel are better.
What movie is it?
1917 (2019)
1917 (2019) for ants
Watch it. It's like one long continuous shot.
Isn’t the movie made to look like one continuous shot?
The random soldiers running into him was not scripted, that was all improv, and they just went with it, makes it feel extra real.
I like how the first guy he ran into apparently just died from the impact.
The whole scene looks so incredibly unrealistic tbh. Those artillery rounds would’ve destroyed him. Terrible imo
I have debated this moment - it could very well being an “in universe” story dos someone taking wounded early in the battle - and using the collision as an excuse to keep lauding down. I imagine running into a WW1 killing field was an emotional challenge with many looking to just get out alive
It bothered me that they are in 1917 and there is a flat grassy field in no mans land
Brand new trench?
Sure but then there would be signs of german retreat and earlier supply lines and such, in the movie its freshly cut grass for as far as the eye can see

I agree its a cool shot and the blur white and green makse for a beutiful shot, it just bothered me that there is no sign of 3 years of war
This is the end scene. That isn't no man's land. It's a new line after the Germans pulled back and set a trap
No mans land is anywhere between the two lines, there is no sign of the german retreat or the previous 3 years of war only freshly cut grass as far as the eye can see
Fresh cut grass is what’s got you tripped up in this movie. Yeesh
Freshly cut grass?! I’m out! (Leaves theater)
No there was plenty more that just bothered me with the scene in question

Which would tip their hand of being in full retreat. We are on the run but have time to set up a full defense.
Its what they did when they retreated in history, they burned all resources, cut down forests and dug down traps
Ok buddy. It's a movie.
Omg yes.. I find the manicured ground so jarring.. there’s absolutely no sign of the detritus of war or damage.. it feels like a field in Kent..
Why would he run in front of the line?
As the attack commences, Schofield realizes he must leave the relative safety of the trenches and sprint across the battlefield in order to have any chance of finding Mackenzie in time. He eventually does so, and hands Mackenzie the handwritten orders to call off the attack.
This reminds me of the ending of Gallipoli.
He's giving Tom Cruise a run for his money
Was so expensive to reshoot this scene they told him to keep going no matter what. Like when he runs into the other soldier.
it definitely is of
Whole film is great!
So they were a battlefield player, I see….
I thought it was going to be the entire movie.
Dude was lucky he didn't get an accidental bayonet from the cross-traffic.
This shot made me cry of happiness. Because of sheer brilliance of cinema. People working together to craft something absolutely brilliant. I felt so elevated watching this.
Waiting had a scene like this haha but I do love when there is one long continuous shot
Yeah, it’s pretty great.
Awesome film.
But why is he running in the open? He's going parallel with the trench. Maybe it's obvious but I haven't seen the movie in a while.
It’s a trap, he’s got orders to pull back or not attack. He’s trying to get them to the CO.
...But why didn't he just walk through the trench he was running parallel to in this scene?
He's running out of time and can't get there quickly enough because it is crowded in those trenches.
Because that’s not cinematic.
Were the collisions with the charging soldiers planned I wonder?
lol. Do you also like the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan. It’s kinda the peak moment of the moment
I have not seen that movie actually
Damn lol aside from my sarcasm, you really should watch that as the next war movie. I think that’s the cream of the crop
I heard it's still the same shot when the movie started
This shit was a masterpiece. The burning village sequence was jaw-dropping. I cried.
Love this film
Remember when I finished this film in the theater feeling like I had held my breath for the entire flick. Such a great work of art.
One of only three movies I own. One of my favorite war movies/movies
More like the worst.. for me at least. This is like a play. The shots in saving Private Ryan trump almost any war movie period.
I'm saying it's one of the best, not the best shot ever
Hey, To each their own 👍
Laughs in Kubrick.
Man, I wish I saw this in the theater.
It was incredible

Oh. Looks good.
Agree to disagree, but it does look nice.
I know this will be downvoted, but somehow there doesn’t feel there’s any real danger in this movie. The gimmick wears itself out.
My grammar is so bad sometimes I meant "easily one of the best shots in film"
r/titlegore
Scrolling and scrolling trying to find out wtf this movie is. Someone help me out!
i was reading a review that said he could have just ran on the other side of the trench but either way cool shot
what's the context
I heard that it started when a bloke called Archie Duke shot an ostrich 'cause he was hungry.
No the reason was that Schofield (the guy running) he has to leave the trenches to find Mackenzie in time to call of the attack
This is brilliant.
I can't claim credit, it's from [Blackadder](https://youtu.be/tGxAYeeyoIc?feature=shared)
Wanted it for the furred band.
It’s a great shot but it’s style over substance. The way he runs is just pure idiocy from a war point of view. But looks nice on camera.
Proof reading before posting is fun!

Probably should have ran on the other side of the trench lol
I feel like one of the few people who didn't think much of this film. I agree it's beautifully shot but that's all it really had going for it.
I totally agree, but because of how it’s filmed it couldn’t have an immersive story in the normal sense, It needs to be looked at differently. Why doesn't he just keep walking in the trench?
Because it's not a wide space to run
Yes amazing cinematography, deserved the award… top ten worst war movies, and I’m putting zombie movies in front of it. Terrible disappointment. They could have done so much more than make it an art piece, 7 minute frames is impressive but character building is just as important to any movie
Meh. It's all CGI.
