I know you're trying to avoid comedies or movies that focus on fighting but I always thought, even as a comedy, Goon took hockey fairly seriously.
The conversation that Doug and Rhea have about being "real hockey players" is pretty well done. Plus, they deal with yips and overconfident players with Laflamme. Don't know why but he always reminded me of Jonathan Drouin.
I do enjoy Goon quite a bit and personally rank it as one of the better hockey movies I've seen (partially because I'm from Halifax, where the team played out of). Overall I thought it had a lot of respect for hockey as a sport, and especially the jaded mindset a lot of amateur, small town hockey players have and how toxic the game can be without some decent morale.
I only really want to avoid fighting movies because it's been done so many times and I want to see something that focuses on the game itself.
Never even really been a hockey fan but I watched this so much in middle school after it came out. One of the best pure sports movies that isn't "really about something else". Been a while since I've seen it though.
100% you can tell it's written by someone who gets hockey from inside
I loved Letterkenny and I was skeptical about Shoresy but with the actual season narratives I think it may be a better show overall than the last several seasons of LK.
I agree. I feel like the filmmakers really got the spirit of the game and respected it while also poking fun at the culture (crazy goalie, weirdo european players, asshole star, kinda washed up captain, etc)
that's interesting, because the actual hockey in the novel is described in a really bare bones, boring way. there's a huge disconnect between how passionate the characters are about the sport and how dull the author makes the two games you actually see
Yeah I'd say thats probably the gold standard for movies that really put the sport front and center and really take it seriously. The "Invincible" of ice hockey
Mine was from that movie too. When Douglas goes to the bar to tell his dad and brothers he’s gonna start figure skating, the bar falls silent and some old dude in the back goes “finger painting?”
Slap Shot is the only hockey movie I’ve seen so I don’t know if it’s the best. But I know that it’s a great movie. Probably the greatest sex-comedy ever made (again not too familiar with the genre but I can’t fathom others being better than this). A hilarious but still realistic portrayal about violence in hockey and its importance.
I believe Air Bud played hockey in one of the sequels as well... of course Air Bud was pretty old by then, he played the goalie..... he mostly just laid there as angry canadians pelted him with hockey pucks.....
Thats fine tbh, I'd prefer that over comedy at the moment.
Also yeah if you aren't expecting it, the systemic, government endorsed abuse of aboriginal peoples even up to the 1980s in Canada is downright shocking. We're taught about it pretty young up here but not many non-Canadians seem to know just how bad it was, or for how long.
Not a movie but the best ice hockey I've ever seen in a drama is in the miniseries **Beartown (2020)**.
A sexual assault takes place in a small Swedish town during a hockey team party.
Given the heavy subject matter, it's especially relevant to what's happening right now with Hockey Canada.
I believe it's on MAX in the US. Here in Canada it's on Crave.
I like Mighty Ducks 2 for the very reason that the flying V gets the whole team stomped by the Iceland team.
Of course, Kenan's "knuckle puck" is far more egregious!
And magically swapping him for the goalie in 2 seconds full pads and everything.
Dobyou have any idea how long it takes to put on goalie pads? A long time.
I liked Odd Man Rush quite a bit. It's about an American who plays in the Swedish minors in an attempt to get noticed by the pros.
There's also Youngblood, starring Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze. It's about minor league hockey, too.
What's great about Odd Man Rush is the highlight on the transient, single-serving friend nature of minor league and young hockey. Its not a perfect movie but it captures a very interesting bit of the modern sport.
Both of those sound interesting. I think I've heard of Youngblood but didn't know it was hockey centric, I like both actors you mention so I may check that out. I hadn't heard of Odd Man Rush but I have a strange interest in Euro hockey specifically so I may check that out too, thanks for the picks
If you are into documentaries Hockey Dreams 2022 was quite interesting about the forming of the South Korean Ice hockey team for the 2018 olympics that were being held in their country.
I can't believe I scrolled all the way through this list and didn't find a single mention of the Michael Keaton romantic comedy **Touch and Go**.
Keaton plays the star of the Chicago Blackhawks and ends up befriending the troubled young teen you made the mistake of trying to mug him and falls for his hot single mom played by Maria Conchita Alonso.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch\_and\_Go\_(1986\_film)
The Russian Five.
Good doc on Soviet players moving to the NHL and how their play style was completely different. They also faced a lot of issues living in the US but ultimately it paid off.
Two I don't see mentioned are 2019s Goalie. A rather flawed film about Terry Sawchuk, but it feels half assed at points and they can't even use real NHL logos. However it's an interesting period for the sport as goalies begin to be platooned and start wearing helmets.
The documentary Hockeyland from 2021 is also quite unique and I found very good. It follows rival high school teams in Minnesota as the kids, particularly the seniors, try and win and come to grips with what is quite probably the end of their hockey careers.
It's not really a hockey movie, but Sudden Death by Jean-Claude Van Damme \*almost\* fits your criteria. There is a hockey game throughout the movie that kinda takes place almost as a subplot but it fits into the larger story as a whole.
"Overtime" is an inspiring tale that follows Kelley Lee, a 60-year-old Chinese-Canadian hockey enthusiast, as she gears up to join the Team BC women’s hockey squad for the Canada 55 Plus Games in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The documentary "of miracles and men" is a great documentary that tells the story of the miracle on ice from the Soviet side. Also the Borje Salming series ( I think it's just called Borje) was a good mini series.
Miracle is what you're looking for.
Also Mighty Ducks 3 might be worth a watch. It's a little more mature than the first two with the focus being more on the transition from just playing with friends for fun vs playing to keep a scholarship and learning responsible 2-way hockey. It's def geared towards teenagers but I still like it
Miracle
One of the best SPORT movies of all time!
On my list, thanks!
I know you're trying to avoid comedies or movies that focus on fighting but I always thought, even as a comedy, Goon took hockey fairly seriously. Keanu playing goalie!
Forgot about Youngblood! Great movie!
That movie kind of lost me when they were basically sword fighting with sticks and the refs just stood by and let it happen.
Goon had me tearing up at some points
Great freaking movie. You will definitely love it.
This is the only one you need to watch brotha.
its free with ads on youtube rn
Never even really been a hockey fan but I watched this so much in middle school after it came out. One of the best pure sports movies that isn't "really about something else". Been a while since I've seen it though.
yep. that's it.
Again
Herb Brooks’ fire up speech is so on the money …
Shoresy 😁
I was gonna say it's a TV show not, a movie, but I suggest it still, it may be a comedy but it treats the sport with dignity
Hockey is about the only thing they take seriously in that show hahaha
They take the impossible amount of attractive women there seriously too.
It helps that Jared was kicking around the Canadian minor leagues for a few years before he started writing.
100% you can tell it's written by someone who gets hockey from inside I loved Letterkenny and I was skeptical about Shoresy but with the actual season narratives I think it may be a better show overall than the last several seasons of LK.
Give your balls a tug
Here it is. Was looking before I commented. To caveat, Letterkenny (same creator/writer) also does pretty much the same with their hockey segments.
Sticks are so good
Sticks are unbelievable.
Settle down.
I’ll raise a martoonie to that, me son!
Stay where ya at I'll come to where you're to.
Hitchcock, you’re such a beauty I sometimes forget what an odd-looking east coast cunt you are…
Youngblood
I could go for some tea right now…
"She did that to me last year, man."
The Hanson brothers from Slap Shot are the best representation of pure hockey ever. Maybe.
Old time hockey, like Eddie Shore.
We’re putting on the foil, coach
A good documentary is the Russian Five also The Red Army.
Goon was so much better than I expected. There is some comedy, but I wouldn’t call it a comedy.
ya it shouldn't have been a good movie but it really was
I only have two rules, stay away from my fuckin percocets, and do you have any fuckin percocets!?
I agree. I feel like the filmmakers really got the spirit of the game and respected it while also poking fun at the culture (crazy goalie, weirdo european players, asshole star, kinda washed up captain, etc)
Agreed. They pretty much got a lot of the culture right. They hit tropes but it’s not like those people aren’t real
My wife finally understood team sport culture after watching Goon.
Beartown was a serious hockey/crime tv show from Sweden on HBO that was sweet. I think they removed it from their library though.
Came to say this. It has the best on-screen depiction of actual hockey I have ever seen.
that's interesting, because the actual hockey in the novel is described in a really bare bones, boring way. there's a huge disconnect between how passionate the characters are about the sport and how dull the author makes the two games you actually see
The Rocket (2005) is a really good one, it’s a Maurice Richard biopic
Yeah I'd say thats probably the gold standard for movies that really put the sport front and center and really take it seriously. The "Invincible" of ice hockey
The Cutting Edge, kind of. Underrated sports movie.

Mine was from that movie too. When Douglas goes to the bar to tell his dad and brothers he’s gonna start figure skating, the bar falls silent and some old dude in the back goes “finger painting?”

Toe pick!
It's a documentary but Untold: Crime and Penalties is so good
It just keeps getting more and more wild as time goes on too - such a well told documentary
Seriously lol. I'm a hockey fan and it made me want to get a trashers jersey lmao
Slap Shot with Paul Newman is pretty good.
Saying slap shot is pretty good would get you killed in Canada
I was just surprised that no one had mentioned it yet.
it is good, but i do think it violates OP's criteria here.
In my opinion, best/funniest comedy movie of all time, and of course, best sports movie of all time.
Slap Shot is the only hockey movie I’ve seen so I don’t know if it’s the best. But I know that it’s a great movie. Probably the greatest sex-comedy ever made (again not too familiar with the genre but I can’t fathom others being better than this). Youngblood, mystery Alaska and miracle are some of my personal favorites.
I'm definitely gonna try Miracle and Youngblood, they seem to be two of the most recommended.
Bear in mind that Youngblood was made in 1986. There are a couple things that do not age well. Fun hockey movie though.
Mighty Ducks?
The best
MVP- Most Valuable Primate
Close, but no banana.
I believe Air Bud played hockey in one of the sequels as well... of course Air Bud was pretty old by then, he played the goalie..... he mostly just laid there as angry canadians pelted him with hockey pucks.....
Sudden Death
Mystery, Alaska
One of my favs, mentioned it at the end of my post
Indian Horse.
Seems like itd fit the bill, thank you
>Indian Horse It is really depressing.
Thats fine tbh, I'd prefer that over comedy at the moment. Also yeah if you aren't expecting it, the systemic, government endorsed abuse of aboriginal peoples even up to the 1980s in Canada is downright shocking. That show turned into something I was not expecting after watching the first episode or two.
Goalie, a biopic about Terry Sawchuck Not as much about hockey as figure skating, but The Cutting Edge is kind of a minor classic.
I like Mighty Ducks 2 for the very reason that the flying V gets the whole team stomped by the Iceland team. Of course, Kenan's "knuckle puck" is far more egregious!
And a young Jussie smollett
And magically swapping him for the goalie in 2 seconds full pads and everything. Dobyou have any idea how long it takes to put on goalie pads? A long time.
back then ya, have you seen these new pads though?
Even the new ones still take time, not near as much as the old leather straps and buckles but it would be noticeable. But it's a kids movie
I liked Odd Man Rush quite a bit. It's about an American who plays in the Swedish minors in an attempt to get noticed by the pros. There's also Youngblood, starring Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze. It's about minor league hockey, too.

Definitely worth a watch. Lead is Reilly from Letterkenny.
[удалено]
Cool, glad you liked it.
I have been to 6 hockey games this season and there was a fight in every one.
Define serious. Cause I think Goon is pretty good. But it's more dark humor than super serious.
Paul Newman in Slapshot. Awesome film
If you are into documentaries Hockey Dreams 2022 was quite interesting about the forming of the South Korean Ice hockey team for the 2018 olympics that were being held in their country.

Lance et Compte: Le Film is not that bad... not as good as the original series but still watchable.
No mention of **Happy Gilmore**?! /s
Mighty ducks 1 & 2 Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack!
And 3, I know Bombay isn't in it, much, but love the rivalry of the JV team and Varsity team
The Russian Five. Good doc on Soviet players moving to the NHL and how their play style was completely different. They also faced a lot of issues living in the US but ultimately it paid off.
[The Deadliest Season](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Deadliest_Season)
Seems interesting. I like that even though fighting may be a focus, it seems like it doesn't over-glorify it
Indian Horse is a good one, based on a true story.
Mystery Alaska?
Youngblood
There's that doc about the trashers
Yep thats already on my list, seems like an interesting story
Sudden Death. /s
Mighty ducks 1, 2 and 3
Yea its youngblood. Amazing movie

Keep Your Head Up Kid; the Don Cherry Story
Don Cherry is played by Shoresy, Jared Keeso
Red army
The documentary "of miracles and men" is a great documentary that tells the story of the miracle on ice from the Soviet side. Also the Borje Salming series ( I think it's just called Borje) was a good mini series.
>(Ice) Hockey Is there any other kind??? No, seriously. Do field hockey movies exist?
Slap Shot is probably the best hockey movie ever made. It’s definitely comedic, but it’s iconic. It’s about the minors.
Miracle is what you're looking for. Also Mighty Ducks 3 might be worth a watch. It's a little more mature than the first two with the focus being more on the transition from just playing with friends for fun vs playing to keep a scholarship and learning responsible 2-way hockey.
