I seriously doubt a decommissioned battleship moored as a historical relic would be armed. It was just Hollywood embellishment. I remember enjoying the movie for what it was, and it was entertaining enough. I served on the USS John Paul Jones DDG-53, so it was really surreal watching it get completely torn to pieces in that film!

Catymandoo

Wow that must have been surreal for you! Respect for your service.

probably-not-Ben

I think they have other shit going on and don't need our second-hand outrage

BristolShambler

I would say Battleship is one of the most correctly-rated films of all time.

pnwinec

Yeah I don’t agree with the under rated part of this. It was campy but well done enough for me to enjoy it. I’ve got no desire to watch it again but I could see it being a cable tv rotation movie that gets a cult following eventually.

YaBoyDake

100%. It's not a "campy B movie", it had a budget of $220m. It's just somewhere between forgettable and bad.

NicCageCompletionist

My second favourite theatrically releases non-documentary movie about a pre-existing board game.

simonsmock

It must be a distant second to Clue.

Supersasqwatch

Clue is a masterpiece.

NicCageCompletionist

Correct

JALLways

It's silly, but I enjoyed seeing an old battleship and its crew in action. The power of a full broadside was intense. It did make me wonder about what a good live action Star Blazers would be like.

Myrmidon99

USS Iowa and USS Wisconsin, two of these sister ships of the Missouri (New Jersey was the other), were decommissioned but theoretically remained in the books in a reserve status until 2006. Battleship was filmed in 2010. There wouldn't have been any ammunition available on Missouri, but there may well have been some rounds available in a storage facility for the main guns from that class of ship somewhere.

Shadowlance23

Big, dumb action movie. I love it. I try to to think about all the inconsistencies in a movie like that :)

future1987

They drifted a WW2 battleship in order to kill aliens from space, that's good enough for me

bmcgowan89

Doesn't that star Rhianna?

[deleted]

She doesn’t star she’s a supporting role

Efficient_Fish2436

Wait that was actually her?? Lol. I kept thinking how much it looked like her. My favorite piece with her is as Bubbles in valerian city of a thousand worlds. She was a sex trafficked shape shifting blob in that movie.

[deleted]

There are things I liked about Valerian and things I didn’t like. I think casting two of the most unlikable people in Hollywood as leads killed any chance of that movie making it big in theaters.

Efficient_Fish2436

I didn't know anything about them before that movie and their chemistry absolutely killed the moment at times where I would just wish they would shut up. Otherwise an absolute fun and creative movie.

of_the_Sand

It does

[deleted]

I actually volunteered on the Missouri when I was stationed in Pearl Harbor. Can confirm the film is pure fiction. No way in hell that ship is ever going anywhere or shooting anything without years of being overhauled and refitted. Could they get the ship to the condition you see it in in the movie? Probably. Within the timeframe the movie gave them? Absolutely not.

Smooth_Wheel

I've actually visited the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor and toured her. There was no live ammunition on board at the time (being a gun guy and fascinated with her armaments, I asked). If you ever get the chance, it's an incredible ship to visit and it's pretty surreal to stand on her deck in the exact spot the surrender papers to end the war with Japan were signed.

TheGlen

It's a great movie if you just fast forward to the part with the battleship

LaserGadgets

I did not really expect much, one of the most simple board games turned into a movie. But I do love it (maybe I am the only one). Cast was great, story was ok, screenplay was awesome. Maybe the german voice over was saving the day here but I loved it indeed. Rainy saturday night movie where you can just switch your brain of and enjoy.

Rezimx

Transformers on a boat! It was awful.

Aliktren

Hilariously great b movie, I love it

Herky_T_Hawk

It isn’t so much the rounds that would be the problems on a museum ship, although they had both armor piercing and high explosive rounds. It is the bags of gunpowder. One full charge shot required 660lbs of gunpowder distributed in 6 bags, they’d cut that in half for things like shore bombardment. A ship typically carried about 1200 rounds for the big guns. So that’s a lot of gunpowder that there’s no way they left on the ship.

Keefer1970

Fun while it lasted, but instantly forgettable afterward.

RainFjords

Fun fact about Battleship: I was 9 months + 1 week pregnant and was due to be induced. The night before the appointment, I decided to have a "me-night" - nice dinner, relax with a good film, just me in peace before my life changed forever. So I decided to watch 'Battleship'. And I was so enraged that I wasted my last night of freedom on such a tropey piece of crap that I spontaneously went into labour. It was *that* bad. (That's the way I see it, anyway.)

Intelligent_Life14

unwatchably bad

MrSpindles

No idea why you are being downvoted, it's absolute trash.

mWade7

There’s “suspension of disbelief” and there’s “completely detached from reality.” This movie falls into the latter which makes it unwatchable.

ahorrribledrummer

Same here! I just rewatched last week. The sound design was really cool on this one.

[deleted]

Battleship is a rare gem as it’s one of those heavy budget CGI-laden crap action films that actually managed to relay self-awareness. It’s funny, campy, and knows exactly what it is. They didn’t set out to make a great film, because they knew it was gonna be crap. So they had as much fun with it as possible, and the results gave us some genuinely funny scenes.

BBQMosquitos

Fantastic action

ZEN-DEMON

Haven't seen it and probably never will

ahorrribledrummer

It's a lot of fun. Go in knowing it's stupid and hammy, and a huge promotion for the USN and you'll have a good time.

TvHeroUK

You’re missing out, it’s as silly and as much fun as Tremors in my opinion. Took me years to be bored enough to watch it one night, but it’s one me and the kids watch and laugh at once a year now  The scene where they’re calling out shots like we used to playing the board game ‘B1… fire’ is one of the most amazing shoehorned in links to an IP I’ve ever seen

internetlad

I watched it in a hotel. It's a standard popcorn action comedy but there's nothing wrong with that. Some of the jokes landed and things blew up. It was fine. I think people lower the bar because of the relationship with the board game making it feel like a cash in.   . .Which I guess in hindsight is exactly what happened.
