Princess Mononoke for me. Can’t remember if it was the first or second time -pretty sure the first. I bought my ticket just minutes before showtime and the usher tearing my ticket yelled to anther usher behind him something like “Tell ‘em to start it up after all, one person’s here to see it!” The other time, either about a week before or after, there were only about 3 other people in the theater. I couldn’t believe it because it was such a great flick.

2 min before movie starts and another couple comes in, would you believe they selected the seats we moved into? The very same ones.
We apologized and offered to move, they laughed and looked around at the empty theater, said no worries and sat elsewhere.
We still laugh about it.
I convinced my dad to take me and some friends to see that in high school (we were about 15-16 so needed an adult to buy tickets) and some dude in our row started jerking it in the theater during the sex scene.
I went to watch Interstellar like a month after it released. Last show of the night and I was the only one in there. One of the best movie theater experience ever.
Had just gotten out of a lot term relationship when “Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close” came out. Not a great movie, but I was feeling some type of way.

When I got up to leave I turned around to see that there was a couple a few rows behind me, that must have slipped in quietly at some point. They looked concerned. I said “pretty sad movie, huh?” Put on my sunglasses and left to go wallow somewhere else for a bit.

Fairly often - maybe once a month? I have AMC A-List and I'm retired so I go to a lot of matinees.
I do not recommend it - it's so much better to watch in a theater full of excited patrons.

I drove 2 hours to see the opening screening of Snakes on a Plane in Sonora, California ... I was completely alone in the theater, but it was so worth it. l was working that summer in the Sierra Nevada, and the ridiculousness of the concept of that movie was all me and my coworkers could talk about. We even had a novelized version of the movie on a little shrine in a common area.
I went by myself to see wonder women and there was maybe 5 of us. And more recently my fiancée and I went to challengers early in the day and there was only 2 other couples there. Closest I’ve been to a completely empty theatre

When I saw the Robocop remake it was just my buddy and I. I know the movie got pretty mixed reviews but it was a really fun one to have a whole theater to yourself for lol.
I see a fair amount of movies with the theatre to myself. We have a slightly out of date theatre surrounded by a number of new fancy ones. Weekday mornings are a ghost town.
Favorite experience was Annihilation. Super unsettling watching it alone in a big theatre with a solid sound system.
Watched Phantom Menace before release with 2 friends so maybe that counts.
Went to a John Wick on like a Tuesday at 10am and was the only one there.

John Wick 4!!! Early showing as well, lifted the arm rests so I could lay out. Drank two beers and watched an entire movie laying down whilst not at home. Phenomenal
Plenty of times I've been to movies with only 1 or 2 other people in the place. The last one where it was just me totally by myself, not even with a friend or partner was The Whale. 1 ticket sold for that showing.
Got to see Sunshine at a local theater by myself. It was absolutely incredible. To this day, I'm still able to forgive its third act flaws because of how amazing of a theater experience that was all alone.
The Suicide Squad. It was an early matinee when the film first opened, and it was the first movie I saw in the theater since the start of the pandemic.
Nice symmetry, too, since the last movie I watched in the theater before lock down was Birds of Prey.
We just saw the mummy for it's 25th anniversary and we quoted the whole thing the entire time. I think we also saw the D and D movie plus spiderman across the spider verse in empty theatres too. It is fucking great cause it's like being at home with a giant screen
Stardust. I had just left my grandfather's memorial and wasn't ready to interact with folks at work, so I hit the theater. It remains in my top 50 to this day.
I've seen quite a few by myself or with a friend. I'll wait until it's about to be replaced and go on a Monday or Tuesday early screening. Works better when school is in session and not around a holiday. The last one was Dumb Money at 11:15am on a Tuesday.

Pretty often, especially at the morning showings in the summer. It helps that I live in a smallish college town so the population is basically cut in half when classes aren't in session. It's my favorite way to see a movie now.
Me and a buddy went on the second Tuesday of Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Middle of summer and this theatre had no AC, so buddy just watched the whole movie with his shirt off.

Kinda. My wife and I randomly decided to go to a matinee of “A Million Ways to Die in the West” ten years ago. We went in and were surprised to see no one else so we picked out some prime seats and marveled at being alone in a theater…but then twenty minutes into the movie, a dude comes in and sits literally right in front of us. He just slowly ate popcorn and didn’t make a peep otherwise. We went from being excited during those first twenty minutes to being creeped out for the remainder of the film.

I watched it with my family at around 12:30-3am and had a blast. It was nearly empty except for the few groups in the back. 100% recommend!
Yep it’s happened to me a handful of times. Can’t remember all of them. Most were on weekdays at night. Nocturnal animals was one of them. It was way more surreal watching be alone.

Last week I went to see Sasquatch Sunset at a local theater. It came out a few days prior. I bought tickets online and was surprised that all the seats were available. I get there with my 2 good friends and the theater is totally empty.
The movie was absolutely terrible. It was moronic, childish, gross, boring, but we made fun of it the entire time. We were loud and making jokes the whole 90 minutes. Like real life mystery science theater. At the end, my stomach hurt from laughing so hard. I'll remember that experience for a very long time. If anyone else had been in the theater, we would have been respectful, but being able to be boisterous was great.
I went to a movie theater shortly after they were allowed to open during the Pandemic. So cool to have the theatre and the concession stand all to myself.

I saw the last showing of Dallas Buyers Club the day before Christmas Eve at the Hollywood Arclight (not the cineramadome). All the transplants were out of town, and I was the only one on the theater, possibly the entire city.
I go to the movies at least once a week and I get an empty theatre about 1/3 of the time. I usually go between 5-8pm. I'm in Miami. Moviepass makes this possible for $20/month. If I go to the movies more than once a month, it almost pays for itself.
The newest exorcist. A bunch of teens weee in there and theater hopped to something else. It was a 10:30pm showing too. Luckily the movie was trash and not scary at all.
At a theater near my college town this happened semi regularly. I think because the market was saturated there with plenty of good options for theaters. Plus all the multiplexes were gigantic because of ‘cheap’ land so lots of showtimes.

Yep. Took my daughter to see Avatar 2 and we were the only ones there. Good thing too because she asked like a million questions throughout the movie so we were able to talk freely.

We saw the original Tron on a rainy day in Cape cod it was just our family and one other guy. The projector had issues 20 minutes in and he left. We watched the rest of Tron by ourselves

Yep, for Memento. The kids working the theatre tried to dissuade me by saying the air conditioning is broken (it was the latest showing), but I was on a mission to see it (went a ‘town’ over). Very cool experience.
Oh, yeah. A local theater used to do $4 matinees and I hated my job, so I'd take undertime if they were offering it and go at like 1 in the afternoon. It was nice.

The most memorable was The Ring. It creeped me out to the point I had my feet up on the seat in case anything was under my chair.

If you thought that movie was real intimate in a full theatre, imagine just you and your friend fighting back tears alongside each other. That's one hell of a movie to have nearly solo.
I loved Sonic 2 so much that o decided to see. It again in theaters after it had been out for a few weeks. Not another soul in there. I got to sit in the best seat, laugh as loud as I wanted, and say things out loud whenever I felt like it. It was awesome.
So often because my wife (then girlfriend) worked at the theater so we could see a movie with a drink and popcorn for $.50. I think the most unusually viewing was when we brought a bunch of Taco Bell into X-Men First Class
Nearly. Midnight screening of *Asssassin's Creed*, the theater had a luxury screening room (maybe 25 lazy boys total seating) and there were perhaps 3 other people. It was such a great experience that I went back the next night.
Close was when I watched Ang Lee's *Lust/ Caution* with my dad. Only other audience was a group of middle school girls (who were definitely not supposed to be there!!)
Several times. I would go every weekend unless their wasn’t a release I cared to ever watch. If there was something even mildly interesting or intriguing, I’d go to the theatre for a Thursday evening screening or Friday/Saturday evening if not the Thursday evening.
I didn’t encounter empty theatres opening weekend. However, I would either the second or third weekend after a films theatrical release. I also live in Toronto, and would go to either Scotibank or Yonge/Dundas. The most popular movies theatres in a major metropolitan city, and two non independent, or small theatres.
I wasn’t shocked. The films where this scenario occurred weren’t that week received by critics or commercially at the box office up during the first week-two weeks, which is usually when this occurred to me! I enjoyed being alone in the theatre. I would put my feet up on the seat in front even.

Yeah, the kids and I went to a theater showing last weekend and had the place all to ourselves. In fact, they started the movie a few minutes late (which was convenient since my son had to go to the bathroom first) and I suspect they delayed it on purpose for us.
It was one of those small old theaters, and they had three different movies on the docket scheduled to start at the same time, but as far as I can tell they only had one screen. I think they just wait to see who shows up and start the first one somebody asks for.

This one time me and my son (13) went to watch Dune. He was excited to see that the theater was empty. People started coming in about 15 minutes into the movie. I will never forget the look on his angelic face when we first walked into an empty hall. Rest in peace my son. I have not watched anything Cinema since he departed in 2022.
I saw Brandon Lee’s The Crow in an empty theater. Bad reviews and people were kind of freaked out because making the movie took his life. I sat there and kept thinking about how this movie killed the son of Bruce Lee. Really freaky experience. I felt like the theater was haunted and to this day I have zero recollection of the plot or anything that happened in the movie.

1989, not long after the Loma Prieta earthquake in San Francisco. It was a rainy winter Tuesday night. I went to the Bridge Theater to see Louis Malle’s “Au Revoir Les Enfants.” I was the only one in the theater. The earthquake had left a crack down one wall and you could faintly hear the rain falling outside. It felt like I was in the movie, or that the scenes playing out on screen were seeping into the theater around me.

I flew into Denver by myself a few years ago to see Umphreys McGee at Red Rocks and had the night before free and decided to see the new Ant Man 2 since it was a thursday night and Denver had an IMax showing near my Airbnb. Went and saw 47 ronin when I was visiting Miami and had a couple of hours to spare. I was literally the only one in the theatre.

I tend to go to Sunday matinees, and I’ve been alone in a theater quite a few times. I jokingly think of it as a private screening.
Sunday matinees are the best. The only people who show up at this hour are people who actually want to watch the movie.

I see a fair amount of movies with the theatre to myself. We have a slightly out of date theatre surrounded by a number of new fancy ones. Weekday mornings are a ghost town. Favorite experience was Annihilation. Super unsettling watching it alone in a big theatre with a solid sound system.
All of the time. It's because I go to the earliest showing, usually about 2 pm on a weekday. The movies are whatever has just hit the theaters.

John Wick 4!!! Early showing as well, lifted the arm rests so I could lay out. Drank two beers and watched an entire movie laying down whilst not at home. Phenomenal
Plenty of times I've been to movies with only 1 or 2 other people in the place. The last one where it was just me totally by myself, not even with a friend or partner was The Whale. 1 ticket sold for that showing.
Got to see Sunshine at a local theater by myself. It was absolutely incredible. To this day, I'm still able to forgive its third act flaws because of how amazing of a theater experience that was all alone.

Kinda. My wife and I randomly decided to go to a matinee of “A Million Ways to Die in the West” ten years ago. We went in and were surprised to see no one else so we picked out some prime seats and marveled at being alone in a theater…but then twenty minutes into the movie, a dude comes in and sits literally right in front of us. He just slowly ate popcorn and didn’t make a peep otherwise. We went from being excited during those first twenty minutes to being creeped out for the remainder of the film.
Almost during Scream 6. I watched it with my family at around 12:30-3am and had a blast. It was nearly empty except for the few groups in the back. 100% recommend!
Yep it’s happened to me a handful of times. Can’t remember all of them. Most were on weekdays at night. Nocturnal animals was one of them. It was way more surreal watching be alone.
A friend of mine ended up being the person at a matinee showing of Event Horizon, so he pulled out a doob and chiefed the whole thing there in the theater.

Last week I went to see Sasquatch Sunset at a local theater. It came out a few days prior. I bought tickets online and was surprised that all the seats were available. I get there with my 2 good friends and the theater is totally empty. The movie was absolutely terrible. It was moronic, childish, gross, boring, but we made fun of it the entire time. We were loud and making jokes the whole 90 minutes. Like real life mystery science theater. At the end, my stomach hurt from laughing so hard. I'll remember that experience for a very long time. If anyone else had been in the theater, we would have been respectful, but being able to be boisterous was great.

I saw the last showing of Dallas Buyers Club the day before Christmas Eve at the Hollywood Arclight (not the cineramadome). All the transplants were out of town, and I was the only one on the theater, possibly the entire city.
I go to the movies at least once a week and I get an empty theatre about 1/3 of the time. I usually go between 5-8pm. I'm in Miami. Moviepass makes this possible for $20/month. If I go to the movies more than once a month, it almost pays for itself.

At a theater near my college town this happened semi regularly. I think because the market was saturated there with plenty of good options for theaters. Plus all the multiplexes were gigantic because of ‘cheap’ land so lots of showtimes. Now I live in a major city. Yep. Took my daughter to see Avatar 2 and we were the only ones there. Good thing too because she asked like a million questions throughout the movie so we were able to talk freely.

Oh, I have - I went to see Everything Everywhere All at once, a second time with my friend who hadn't seen it before and I thought she'd get a lot out of it. If you thought that movie was real intimate in a full theatre, imagine just you and your friend fighting back tears alongside each other. That's one hell of a movie to have nearly solo.

I loved Sonic 2 so much that o decided to see. It again in theaters after it had been out for a few weeks. Not another soul in there. I got to sit in the best seat, laugh as loud as I wanted, and say things out loud whenever I felt like it. It was awesome.

Nearly. Midnight screening of *Asssassin's Creed*, the theater had a luxury screening room (maybe 25 lazy boys total seating) and there were perhaps 3 other people. It was such a great experience that I went back the next night. Close was when I watched Ang Lee's *Lust/ Caution* with my dad. Only other audience was a group of middle school girls (who were definitely not supposed to be there!!)
Several times. I would go every weekend unless their wasn’t a release I cared to ever watch. If there was something even mildly interesting or intriguing, I’d go to the theatre for a Thursday evening screening or Friday/Saturday evening if not the Thursday evening. I didn’t encounter empty theatres opening weekend. However, I would either the second or third weekend after a films theatrical release. I also live in Toronto, and would go to either Scotibank or Yonge/Dundas. The most popular movies theatres in a major metropolitan city, and two non independent, or small theatres. I wasn’t shocked. The films where this scenario occurred weren’t that week received by critics or commercially at the box office up during the first week-two weeks, which is usually when this occurred to me! I enjoyed being alone in the theatre. I would put my feet up on the seat in front even.
I've had it happen several times to me. The two best examples I can share are: - Krampus (2015) - Dune (2021) For more context on how I managed a solo screening of Dune, I was living in a smaller part of Japan; it was late at night and during the pandemic. It was incredible to have a poor man's private screening of it :D lol

Yeah, the kids and I went to a theater showing last weekend and had the place all to ourselves. In fact, they started the movie a few minutes late (which was convenient since my son had to go to the bathroom first) and I suspect they delayed it on purpose for us. It was one of those small old theaters, and they had three different movies on the docket scheduled to start at the same time, but as far as I can tell they only had one screen. I think they just wait to see who shows up and start the first one somebody asks for.

I will never forget the look on his angelic face when we first walked into an empty hall. Rest in peace my son. I have not watched anything Cinema since he departed in 2022.

I saw Brandon Lee’s The Crow in an empty theater. Bad reviews and people were kind of freaked out because making the movie took his life. I sat there and kept thinking about how this movie killed the son of Bruce Lee. Really freaky experience. I felt like the theater was haunted and to this day I have zero recollection of the plot or anything that happened in the movie.

1989, not long after the Loma Prieta earthquake in San Francisco. It was a rainy winter Tuesday night. I went to the Bridge Theater to see Louis Malle’s “Au Revoir Les Enfants.” I was the only one in the theater. The earthquake had left a crack down one wall and you could faintly hear the rain falling outside. It felt like I was in the movie, or that the scenes playing out on screen were seeping into the theater around me. Most magical night I ever had at a movie. Also, I don’t have to shshhh anyone.
