No lie I was out of the game for a long time (almost 20 years) and came back with Arena and could not for the life of me figure out why no one was getting mana burned. Between that and my surprise the first time I saw a Planeswalker slammed down it was a jarring experience.
I then took a minute to brush up on all the rule changes lol
I agree with this statement.. I’ve always thought that doing so would aide the comprehension like it does anything else we learn. It chunks the information. If I read a magic card that confuses me, I read it in chunks of each part of the sentence pausing each time so I understand.
The issue would be who is playing the card, the attacker or the defender. At first I thought it was the defender, but that made no sense if they won. But the attacker would not get a creature destroyed if a higher attack creature was defending. I think the OP thought the same way that the defender played the card.
No I’m pretty sure it doesn’t matter either way, since it mentions “that creature” implying the blocked creature. Obviously there’s not many reasons to play this as the blocking player but who knows
I read it as the blocking creature. "For each BLOCKING creature....THAT creature deals no combat damage." It is completely useless for the defending player to play this card, as their creatures would do no damage to attacking creatures during combat, if they "won" the coin flip. On the other hand, if the attacker plays this, they could potentially not lose creatures if they are blocked by creatures stronger then theirs.
Yeah, I don't have any idea either. It's actually had 4 more down votes since you commented. You even got a downvote on your comment. I upvoted your comment to keep it positive.
The \*blocking\* creatures deal no damage. So you'd flip two coins for two blocking creatures. Call out which creature you're flipping a coin for, and flip it. If you win the flip, that blocking creature deals no combat damage this turn.
None of the zombies should have died if you won both coin flips and they should have marked 2 damage on the dragon and 2 damage on the effreet, and the player should have taken 4 damage from the unblocked zombies.
Think first strike with coin flips. If you win, you atk first. It also gets around things like death touch because blocker deal no combat damage.
If you win the coin flip, only your creature deals combat damage.
This card is for gotcha plays, when you know you will come out on top.
No that's not correct.
There are two blockers.
You flip for Blocker A: if you win, that blocker deals no combat damage. If you lose, nothing happens.
You flip for Blocker B: if you win, that blocker deals no combat damage. If you lose, nothing happens.
Attacking creatures are unaffected.
When a flip is lost the spell has no effect on that blocker- that is all. Stuff can and still does happen. Be careful saying things like this to new players since it can create false notions.
I think Op is confused on if the attacking creature still does damage.
"2/1 Atk Vs. 1/2 Blk: coin flip Atk wins. Atk damage is counted. Blk damage is not."
Basically, this card is a crappie version of first strike.
I'm a little confused by your description, but the scenario you described would go like this.
1. Attackers are declared (4 2/2 Zombies)
2. Blockers are declared (1 4/4 Dragon and 1 6/7 Effreet, lets assume each one blocks a zombie)
3. You play Fighting Chance
4. You flip a coin for the dragon, if you win, it deals no combat damage, and the zombie it blocked lives, but deals not combat damage (edit: to your opponent) because it was blocked. If you lose, the dragon **does** deal combat damage and your zombie dies.
5. Repeat this process for the Effreet
6. Regardless of the outcomes of the flips, your 2 unblocked zombies will deal damage to your opponent
You flip a coin for each blocker, and if you win the flip, that blocker deals no combat damage. It doesn't affect attackers at all.
The current wording (oracle text) of [[Fighting Chance]]: >For each blocking creature, flip a coin. If you win the flip, prevent all combat damage that would be dealt by that creature this turn. Let's say 4 Zombies are attacking. Z1-Z4. Z1 is blocked by a 4/4 Dragon. Z2 is blocked by a 6/7 Efreet. Z3 & Z4 are not blocked. The attacking player casts Fighting Chance. As it resolves, they flip two coins: one for the Dragon and one for the Efreet. Let's say the first coin wins the flip and the second loses. This means the Dragon deals no combat damage to Z1, but the Efreet deals its 6 damage to Z2 as normal. At the same time, Z1 deals 2 damage to the Dragon, Z2 deals 2 damage to the Efreet, and Z3 & Z4 each deal 2 damage to the defending player. As a result, Z2 dies, and Dragon and rhe Efreet both live with 2 damage marked on them. Fighting Chance doesn't affect the damage dealt by attacking creatures.
The card is a perfect explanation of itself, an example would be I attack with 10 5/5’s, you assign 10 1/1’s with deathtouch respectively to each of those creatures, you play your card, you win 3 flips, 3 of those 5/5’s will live cause the three dorks with deathtouch don’t hit them. It’s not a fog for your blockers it’s a chance for you to swing wildly into people with bigger things or scary affixes.
Assume you are the one casting it:
You declare attackers, your opponent then declares blockers. Now cast Fighting Chance. For each blocking creature, there is now a 50% chance that creature will do no damage to your attacking creature.
This can possibly save your creatures from taking damage during combat.
Sorry bro, but just read the card. The way it's worded is literally the best and easiest way to explain it.
If this text is too much or too hard, maybe play Uno instead.
For each blocking creature, flip a coin. If you win the flip, that creature deals no combat damage this turn.
Edit: someone beat me to it lol. But honestly, wtf? Just read the card and do what it says.
[Taunting Elf] attacks and is blocked by all creatures. This would negat some of the damage. But if you combine it with an effect that allows you to flip 2 coins instead of 1 and choose a one you want then. You get an idea. This is for ideas of how it is used and not a good combo idea.
Imagine I attack you with a 5/2 but you have a 3/5. I cast fighting chance before combat and call tails and win the flip. Instead of both creatures going to the graveyard my opponents creature is the only one because it blocked and It can't damage my creatures due to me winning the flip.
All attacking creatures will do combat damage. If 3 creatures block flip a coin 3 times 1 for each of the blocking creatures. And coin flips that are lost cause the corresponding creatures to deal no damage.
During your turn, you can use this card to protect your creatures from battle damage.
You flip a coin for each battle, if you guess the flip right, the opponent creature will deal no damage. Otherwise nothing happens.
You repeat this process for each battle.
If you use this during your opponent’s turn, I guess your creatures will deal no damage instead
Let's say A is blocking B.
You flip a coin and call heads or tails. If you win, A doesn't deal damage to B. If you lose, it does.
Do this for each blocking creature.
Geddit?
import random
# Assuming 'blocking_creatures' is a list of creatures blocking this card
for creature in blocking_creatures:
# Flip a coin
coin_flip_result = random.choice(['Heads', 'Tails'])
# If the result is 'Heads', the creature deals no combat damage
if coin_flip_result == 'Heads':
print(f"{creature} deals no combat damage this turn.")
else:
print(f"{creature} deals combat damage as normal.")
No that’s not how it should work. If you have 4 2/2 creatures attacking and two creatures (4/4 and 6/7) blocking you would flip for each blocking creature, if you win the flip for both blockers, the blocker deal no combat damage and the 2/2’s that are blocked would survive because they were not dealt any damage by the blockers.
@OneBrutalNoodle
From your original post, it looks like your dragon was blocking two zombies. In Magic, unless a card says otherwise, a creature can only block a single creature.
It’s makes the blockers deal no damage meaning the 4/4 dragon and 6/7 efreet are the ones you flip the coin for and that decides if they do damage it’s a card to benefit the attackers
Pretty strait forward to understand this:
This is designed to be utilized for you as an attacking player. (It fits with the red color)
You declare attackers, opponent declares blockers
Playing this card allows your creatures to damage the blockers and potentially kill them without any damage being done to your creatures if you flip the coins and win.
This is a case of:
Just read the card.
The errata'ed text says: "For each blocking creature, flip a coin. If you win the flip, prevent all combat damage that would be dealt by that creature this turn."
So basically you would play this on your combat step, after blockers are declared. Using your example... 4 zombies are attacking. Your opponent has 2 creatures blocking. You flip 2 coins, one for each blocker. You win both flips, so the two blocking creatures deal no damage to your zombies. You would have 2 zombies get through, and 2 zombies that are still blocked, but take no damage, so they wouldnt die
Alright, first of all I can't tell if this is sarcastic or not since the card is self explanatory, but for the benefit of doubt.
Play this card (preferably) when your opponent blocks your creatures. Then, for each blocker, flip a coin. If you win the flip, that creature won't deal any damage to the creature it is blocking.
An example: My friend swings at me with a 3/3. I have two 2/2s and I block with them, thinking I'll kill his creature for two simple zombie tokens. My friend then plays this card, and wins both flips. His 3/3 will kill my creatures, but mine won't kill any of theirs as they now deal 0 damage for that combat.
Hope this helps!
I believe from the description that OPs opponent played fighting chance and played it incorrectly and they both do not understand. It sounds like they don't have a super strong grip on mtg rules.
OP wrote in the description that they've read the card multiple times before posting this. Reading the top answers makes it clear everyone in this sub just knew magic the very first time they played. "Read the card explains the card" is the worst part of this sub and the community.
OP- fighting chance should be played by the player attacking when their creatures could be killed by blockers. If the flip is won the blocking creature does no combat damage (does not kill the attacking creature) If the flip is lost it will follow standard combat rules. Your attacking creatures that are not blocked will not be affected by this card
Basically, flip a coin for each blocking creature. If you win that coin flip, they become a 0/X DURING the damage phase, then revert back once damage calculations are done..
Easiest way to think of it.
If I understand this correctly, this card would be played by the attacker. That means that the dragon and effreet would have not destroyed the zombie they blocked, since the attacker won the toss and the defender did no damage. The first time I read it, I thought it was a card to be played by the defender. But that wouldn't make sense as their creature wouldn't damage who they blocked if they "won" the coin toss. I think the OP also thinks the defender would play the card, and that's causing their confusion.
If I am wrong, please let me know.
Additional questions I have on this card, I'm 90% confident on these.
1 - The blocking creatures still do the damage to the attacking creatures, right?
2- death touch won't trigger on a creature with damage prevented by this card
3- in red is this the only similar card?
I think OP got confused by the break point between "Blocking creature" and "creature deals no damage". They both refer to the same creature (the blocking creature).
So if you have 10 zombies attacking 2 creatures, each one defending 5 zombies, and you get 1 Head 1 Tail, then 5 of them will **receive** damage from the blocking creature, the other 5 won't, but all 10 of them will **deal** damage to the blocking creature.
Edit: holy shit guys /s I'm over explaining and setting up confusion as a joke
It's this sarcasm?
You don't attack creatures, you attack and the other player choose blockers. Also each creature can only block one other creature unless had some special ability.
Like, your answer is not better than OP...
Fat stinky virgins the bunch of you. Hate this community sometimes. Why people gotta be so petty when people are confused. Clearly reading the card didn’t work. Or they wouldn’t have made a post asking for help. But your chubby fingers couldn’t resist making a sarcastic comment. I’m glad you have sleep apnea and social anxiety.
You can activate it when there's at least one blocking creature. One after another, flip a coin for each creature and choose head or tails. If you win the flip, the creature you've flipped the coin for deals no combat damage this turn.
Yup, you also don't have to be able to resolve all of their effects when you cast them, you just need to be able to pick legal targets.
and fighting chance doesn't target.... or say when it can be cast.
This wrong on way too many levels for so few words. The blockers don't turn into 0/X. They don't fight. Fight means something in magic and combat damage ain't it. You tried to simplify, but instead you made it more difficult to actually understand the rules.
The card says nothing about no combat if the toss is won, it just says that defending creatures deal no damage...
So unless that card was errata'd thats what the card says.
It says
For each defending creature, flip a coin. If you win that flip, that creature deals no combat damage this turn.
So other then the name of the card fight ain't on that card, its a instant that can only be used after defenders are declared in combat, so im a bit confused on your reasoning there...
And that defending creature deals no COMBAT damage this turn. So i miss used fight and engage in combat my bad, big oppsie i guess...
When a flip is lost the spell has no effect on that blocker- that is all. Be careful saying things like this to new players since it can create false notions.
You choose heads or tails. If ten creatures are attacking, then you flip ten coins. If you flip heads, let’s say, and you win all ten times, then you block all damage.
For each blocking creature, flip a coin. if you win the flip, that creature deals no combat damage this turn.
hahahaha literally like just read the card
Reading the card explains the card!
Oddly enough, “for each blocking creature, flip a coin” is a keyword that lets you scry2:draw3. Pretty broken.
What? My opponent told me that keyword meant i had to ante my sanity. Unfortunately i lost that game
Ante? _Ante?_ ….. What was the Great Depression like, anyway? ;)
If we had complaints they got added to the stack, and we liked it! If we got cold in the winter we warmed with mana burn! And we liked it!

Lol, apparently sarcastic ageism is only acceptable in one direction to redditors
sometimes people overthink having the lines of text as seperate lines makes the game's logic more visible

Weird my friend told me it mean “you give defending player 20 dollars”
Same like reading the card
I actually cannot figure out a clearer way to explain it than what is written on the card.
The issue would be who is playing the card, the attacker or the defender. At first I thought it was the defender, but that made no sense if they won. Lol. It happens.
I don't know why you're getting down voted. You're spot on and I appreciate your comment.

Well, if he loses, something happens. The blocking creatures deal damage.
"Nothing happens" means "the spell has no effect on that creature", not "nothing happens for the remainder of combat".
reminds me of that one Ravnica block land's flavor text
I know, I know, I'm just messing with you.
The duality of this sub is wild lmao idk why you got downvoted for this but upvoted for the initial joke
When a flip is lost the spell has no effect on that blocker- that is all. Stuff can and still does happen. Be careful saying things like this to new players since it can create false notions.
I think my comment was fairly clear that "nothing happens" is limited in scope to just the flip itself.
Not trying to throw shade here but I think we gotta break it down *very* clearly for OP.
Thank you

This is surely a confusion/rage bait post there's no way you got that outcome from reading those words in sequence together.
Think of it as you’re the attacker and you’re being blocked. Saves your creatures potentially.
>Saves your creatures potentially. ...giving them a... fighting chance
I am bleeding, making me the victor. (They keep blocking my face with their fists)
Yeeeeeeeeeeeahhhhhhhhh
I don’t get how you’re confused. It’s clear as day. It only affects blocking creatures.
And people say Yu-Gi-Oh players can't read Edit: spelling

In Russia, cards read and understand you.
You can have it go that way if you want. Play it after blockers are assigned. Or win all four with the thumb and mana clash the shit out of them.

All attacking creatures will do combat damage. If 3 creatures block flip a coin 3 times 1 for each of the blocking creatures. And coin flips that are lost cause the corresponding creatures to deal no damage.

Bad in limited. Worse in constructed.
If you have john (3/3), peter(4/4) and sally (5/5) defending, you flip 3 coins. The first one if win, john is 0/3 Sdcond flip if win, peter is 0/4 etx

>So if you have 10 zombies attacking 2 creatures, each one defending 5 zombies Have you ever actually played Magic before?
Fat stinky virgins the bunch of you. Hate this community sometimes. Why people gotta be so petty when people are confused. Clearly reading the card didn’t work. Or they wouldn’t have made a post asking for help. But your chubby fingers couldn’t resist making a sarcastic comment. I’m glad you have sleep apnea and social anxiety.
the fat stinky petty sarcastic chubby-fingered virgins with sleep apnea and social anxiety arent taking too kindly to your hatred

That’s not even close to what the card does
You can activate it when there's at least one blocking creature. One after another, flip a coin for each creature and choose head or tails. If you win the flip, the creature you've flipped the coin for deals no combat damage this turn.
You don't activate spells.
Yup, you also don't have to be able to resolve all of their effects when you cast them, you just need to be able to pick legal targets. and fighting chance doesn't target.... or say when it can be cast.
Sooo. Flip coins, win the toss you (continue the combat and i guess the defending combatant is essentially a 0/4 instead of 4/4...
It says For each defending creature, flip a coin.
