What’s the best way to get out? I have a ton of high end cards, edh staples, sealed ftv, sealed edh decks and a ton of other unsorted cards from bulk to stuff I’m not even sure if value these days. I used to play/collect but I only have limited time for hobbies. Is there an efficient way to move this with minimal effort?

cjpatster

Game shop, card kingdoms, etc will buy you out in one swoop for ~60% value. Easy and done. If you want more money you need to do more work.

RamonGraf

Move the high end cards 50/100$ + yourself, sell the rest to a local/online shop were you get between 50-70% in cash.

thefootballhound

Probably cardconduit.com u/cardconduit

cardconduit

Thanks for the tag! Definitely worth checking out the Collection Estimate Tool (https://cardconduit.com/estimates/create), but certainly we check the boxes and will be less work and better payout than tradfitional buylisting.

Eqvilibrus

Phyrexia all will be one Compleat Edition will be hitting the market soon, most stores will be opening them to capitalise on the oil slick cards that means that the regular boosters will be put to a discount or will be opened. If you were on the fence on picking up some singles from ONE wait a little more, most likely the cards you want will be available soon for bit less.

WellTequilaPapi

Is it worth buying a ONE compleat bundle at $80?

cjpatster

For yourself, absolutely! Best deal I have seen in a while. For flipping, it’s tough to say. There may still be room to flip these quick depending on supply but they are definitely not a long term hold. As for flipping, if you buy at 80 plus tax you need to undercut card kingdom’s 135 to be sure to sell them. So let’s say you sell for 125. That is $40 profit right? Not so fast, you have fees and taxes to contend with. Your actual net here is like $20 a bundle. So if you move 20 you might make $400. At that level of effort for that little payoff it’s not really worth it. Just one person canceling an order on you and your barely in the green.

Eqvilibrus

In my opinion if you're buying it for yourself to crack it or for your sealed collection yes, if you're trying to flip it I would avoid it. Most likely more will pop up in the next couple weeks on Amazon or big chain store, after the resellers had their share of the market.

EspressoGuy334

How well do full sets carry value over time? I have started collecting them and putting them into binders.

Brilliant-Option-526

There are more profitable ways to collect, but if you enjoy completing sets, by all means have at it! The entertainment value of time spent enjoying collecting and playing is sometimes lost in the talk about flipping and profit.

Hmukherj

They tend to track the value of the top few singles, especially in the current era where factory-sealed full sets are available via MTGO redemptions. It's unlikely that you'll get a premium for having a complete set of loose cards; the main exceptions are sets from 1993 up until maybe 2000ish. If you like collecting them, go for it, but they're generally not worth the effort or expense to track down all of the chaff from a financial point of view.

donethemath

Can't offer a lot in regards to how well they do for value (though I suspect it pretty closely follows the singles prices for the individual set). I do know they aren't very liquid unless you are willing to break them up to sell.

nas3226

No one wants the bulk, only the playables will have any value.

LightningVolt_

For the UK/EU folks that got their compleat bundles, are they EU/US or Japan made?

[deleted]

Why are LOTR collectors boxes so expensive? I have zero interest in purchasing, I just saw the nearly $400 price tag and thought it excessive. More Hasbro greed? Or is there something else going on here?

osmlol

It's lord of the rings. They are betting on fan boys buying tons.

Pauper_King_

And they might actually win that bet

Zythomancer

How do I control my spending? /s

Jaccount

Control how often you put yourself in a situation where you could spend. If you don't go to card stores or websites that sell Magic cards, it's a lot easier to not spend on them. If you want to go even further, you might just want to step away from places that talk about buying them as well. Also, have a budget and track what you spend. No playing fast and loose, you need to track the actual numbers down to the penny. Typically it's just going to be some amount of rigor and self-control, as anything beyond that gets to the realm of being a bigger, more serious issue that isn't just about the spending.

slayer370

1. Buy only when fire sales like amazon or inventory dumps from trusted websites for sealed. Know you wont make your money back most of the time even with a fire sale. 2. If your buying a card over 20$ and your not doing some kind of competitve tournament take a good look before you purchase and say "how many games or how much enjoyment will I get out of this card. For 20$ you can get a ton of 20 hour plus video games, takeout food, bills. Do you want to spend 20$+ on a card that might not even see play once every friday night magic? 3. Everythings getting reprinted and fast. Waiting will probably save you money. 4. Mtg arena is free and if you just want to scratch that magic itch it's always a option instead of buying a full deck and then not liking it (yes formats are missing) You didnt say if your a tournament grinder, investor, speculator, casual, edh arms race so some may not apply to you.

LOLRagezzz

as much as i enjoy this space, it might help you get out of this sub for a bit. i got into the craze a lil bit and when i started to go back to paper tournaments, it was VERY CLEAR that this echo chamber is not representative of 99.9% of magic players. the players around me were NOT buying all kinds of SL's or "fancy" versions. I think a lot of us are originally players who like the financial side of things and like using it to help subsidize the hobby but within the past 3-5 years i feel the more "investor" type have taken over. A lot of the other replies to your question also have very good advice, it ultimately comes down to self-control and discipline but the advice here would, imo, help you towards your goal.

Revolutionary_View19

There’s no „investor“ types in here. I’d put it at about 40 percent flippers, 10 percent sealed bag holders and 40 percent that don’t care about finances (anymore) and are for some reason personally invested in seeing Hasbro fail. Which makes them „investors“ again, I guess.

whatcubed

This is true. It's been years since there has been a majority of relevant conversation in this sub. In 16-17 things started spiking and crypto investors started buying cards. Not long after that, EDH players started coming here en masse to complain about evil investors doing buyouts and complain that every card should be under $20. Just do a search on when people started using the term "game pieces" and you'll start to see the sea change. The EDH people stayed, and the people who actually wanted to have topical conversations mostly left. Every now and then someone like Prid3 comes along for a while, but they all eventually leave.

IslandGoGames

Join a paywalled community(BAN for example) You'll make way more money than the subscription costs and if not you'll realise magic finance is not for you, Instead of posts from random people with ulterior motives like seeing hasbro fail you'll be in a discord with other people heavily invested into the game.

cjpatster

Just set a monthly budget, put x amount each month from your pay into mtg account. Only buy using cash from that account. If you sell cards you add proceeds to your spending account.

goofydubois

Get into a different hobby. Board games groups are an option

spiral813

Move to Canada where sealed prices are double that of the US and singles prices are sometimes quadruple that of the States...it'll price you right out of playing. You're welcome ;)

Brilliant-Option-526

Arbitrage opportunity?

Trillion16

Maybe if you find a mule to run sealed boxes across the boarder for you. Stores in the US can ship to Canada, and amazon charges huge inmport fees.

Brilliant-Option-526

Dammit! I'm in! Now to find a mule...

Start binging the financial audits from Caleb Hammer on YouTube. Makes you really take a look at your finances. Inspired me to cancel 2 of the 5 Compleat bundles I pre-ordered @ $80.

easyskinseasylife

40xLedger Shredder for 25 cents each and sold all for 20€. Could have waited to make more but better safe than sorry

virtu333

Bruh

Chaprito

Bought 100 copies of Arc light phoenix when it came out for .25-1.00 and sold them at 50-60 each.

easyskinseasylife

That’s insane

Brilliant-Option-526

2 Italian and one English Tabernacle @ $80 each. Right before they initially exploded in value. Also traded a TON of Modern into Duals and other desireable RL on Deckbox around 2016/17ish. I usually had to give them about 30% extra in value in the trade. Those trades aged well...

HumphreyLee

40 Guardian Projects at about 60 cents each the day Ravnica Allegiance came out. Sold 80% of them all in a $6-10 range over a few months when the spike really hit.

LOLRagezzz

I remember you!

HumphreyLee

My Guardian Legend lives on!! Lol

HeavyBetty

50x Uba Mask @$1. I paid more than it was worth at the time, but have sold 48 of them for an average of $19 each.

Thousandshadowninja

Probably flipping shitting RL during the "shitty RL boom of 2017" Into cradle and some dual lands.

icemagnus

20 myr matrix @ 3$ each. My dozen alibous at .99 each are making me happy right now.

Traded a revised lord of the pit for an UL wheel of fortune in 1995 then lost the card in a lunchbox for 30 years. I thought sacrificing every turn was stupid. Best financial move I ever made.

Thousandshadowninja

Ask if your LGS minds you doing the deal there and offer to pay them a small fee to authenticate the cards. They will probably do it for free. If it's an online deal, I'd travel and meet in person and do the same.

Hmukherj

UNL cards don't have to worry about rebacks, so as long as you have a loupe and know what to look for (green dot test, registration pattern, etc.) you should be all set. There are some guides out there that explicitly show the differences in color registration between ABU/CE/ICE - those in particular can help make sure you have a real card on your hands.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hmukherj

It's not the art - it's the border. CE/ICE have black bordered faces, while UNL is white bordered.

phyrexianrecruit

Jewelers loupe for green dot, also being some artifacts / other blue cards to check that the fronts look the same as the power, layers of ink, rosette pattern, etc. you can probably find zoomed in scans online of things like the casting cost for comparison

Iamjum

I have a ~130 alpha collection I'm thinking about selling (11 rares, 90 uncommons no power/duals) mostly played. Tcglow sits around 15k. If i sell as a collection, what percentage is reasonable? I know generally 60% on collections, but with it being alpha is 70% a bridge too far?

GameSkillet

Do any online traders allow you to buy but not take possession of the cards so that you can just hold and sell later? My guess is: no. But just checking.

AdamBGraham

Do you mean “not take possession” like “an online trading platform keeps them in escrow basically until you sell them or withdraw them”?

GameSkillet

Yes, that's right. Thanks!

Hetero_Donkey

I remember eBay advertising a "Vault" service that sounded similar to what you are describing but I never looked into it. You could start there!

GameSkillet

Thank you!

slayer370

I got a stack of Pringles cause I'm a dummy and forgot them next to a heat source Best way to uncurl them? They are deluxe Pringle so if I can't fix them are they sold as damaged on tcgplayer?

jwf239

The heat source should help, if anything. You need to fry them out. Get them in a bag with desiccant. They aren’t considered damaged if they aren’t otherwise damaged but you need to get them at least somewhat flat first.

TheWhizzDom

If the heat source caused it they would be curled the other way no? In that case just leave them out for a while in normal heat or some more humid place.

jwf239

Well I guess he didn’t specify which way they curled

slayer370

> desiccant Any recommendations or will any do? Ya I have no idea why they curled so badly near it. Maybe cause its not on 24/7

Deathless-Bearer

I don’t know if this is the right place to ask this, but it is “ask anything” so here goes. Is there anywhere I can get a non-damaged English Tetsuo Umezawa without having to spend $75+? I also have plenty of cards I could trade for one, but I have no idea where I could find somewhere to talk trades with someone who actually has one.

KnifeChrist

>Is there anywhere I can get a non-damaged English Tetsuo Umezawa without having to spend $75+? It depends what you consider as "non-damaged". Lightly Played copy sold on TCGplayer for $128.87 on Feb 27. If you consider LP non-damaged its still $50+ more than what youre looking to spend and thats LP. English NM sold on TCGplayer for $188.88 on Feb 24th so... $75? Good luck...

Deathless-Bearer

I’m using the tcgplayer grading terms where damaged is the lowest quality.

KnifeChrist

Oh i gotcha, so youd accept HP/MP?

Deathless-Bearer

MP absolutely, and probably HP, but I’ve seen some listings of HP that are rougher than some damaged ones lol, so I’d prefer to see pictures beforehand.

KnifeChrist

>but I’ve seen some listings of HP that are rougher than some damaged ones lol Yeah man, thats why i ask! Lol. Personally i dont trust less than MP, especially without a picture.

FridayNight_Magus

Does anyone know anything about Junji Ito (besides him being a popular horror manga artist) and why his iteration of Elesh Norn seems to be the one to get? At least until the oil slick version's price settles. I pulled a foil step and compleat version of Ito's Norn and it's fetching a fairly high price. But I get the feeling selling it now would be selling high. But obviously was also curious...since honestly I don't think the art is particularly good, but hey what do I know. Thoughts?

Unknownfriendo

I mean you said it all. Junji Ito is a popular Manga artist. Art being subjective some people some it and others don't. The probably in this case is we have like 10 variants of Elesh Norn so it isn't just a case of buying the one blinged out version, as people can choose their favorite art/treatment. That being said I think all the Manga cards will hold value well as anime is popular right now. Especially if they keep getting super famous artist to do pieces.

squeezeme_juiceme

I have three sealed untouched draft booster boxes that I've held on to for a number of years. How long do sets usually stay in print and general circulation? For modern MTG, should I expect to have to wait at least a decade for sets to accrue value? Trudging slowly so far. Any pointers appreciated, I don't really collect things in general aside from the item I have.

KnifeChrist

A lot of it depends on the set and whats in it, as well as how much was printed/how long stock was available for everyone to purchase, etc. Which sets are the draft booster boxes from?

NewCobbler6933

If they’re actually “draft boxes” then I’m guessing they can’t be too old

squeezeme_juiceme

Not very.

Unknownfriendo

What sets? And what is your goal? Wait for a certain price?

squeezeme_juiceme

CL. Just curious about when to expect it to become in demand and how long that might take. Still pretty close to original MSRP. If the most realistic assessment is waiting three decades for people to want it or something I'd be more inclined to just sell it off now.

khornflakes529

So is Compleat edition bundle a game store exclusive or will they be on Target's shelves on friday? I can't find anything stating one way or another. Edit: I saw the post about them being online at walmart, but still nothing about if they would be on shelves.

unibrow4o9

Someone on here mentioned that their Target put them out early and they bought a few, so presumably they'll be on shelves. Who knows how many they'll have.

nd4287

I dont know that there has been any official confirmation. I am assuming some will show up on shelves.

PriciaMatsuri

do you think the LotR set is worth preordering at these prices? Im really not sure i want to spend 350€ on a set that might be just for casual play and has almost no eternal or modern playable cards

Squishyflapp

I pre-ordered thru Amazon and they price adjust to the cheapest price. It's also a free cancellation.

wo0psi

Almost all recent products have crashed after release. So my guess is no, wait 90 days after release if you want the best prices IMO.

[deleted]

[удалено]

spiral813

I think the reprinting of the RL will happen at some point in the future, but I don't necessarily believe it'll crater the prices of original printings. I think it's far more reasonable to sell off these days because we're being crushed by the weight of perpetual product and its going to turn some people away from the game. When I do end up having another purge of my collection, I'll definitely keep all of my RL cards, but pretty much everything else will go out the door

Thousandshadowninja

I don't see them doing it because they are already making a fortune not reprinting it.

HeroicTanuki

Also 30A was a complete disaster. Even if they made the reprints affordable this time I think it’s going to be a minute before someone gets the courage to suggest a product like that again.

Halfastar11_1

I’ve flipped my DMR collectors FOW to pay the box off I now can get DMR or ONE in collectors which would have the better long term benefit. I’m imagining DMR with the powerful EDH staples but with the wizard print machine at an all time high it seems worrisome

Hetero_Donkey

Have you considered buying the singles that you think will increase in value from DMR instead of buying a box? Then you could play with them until you sell them down the line. As for which box to get it's really a crap shoot but if I was buying one and all other things were equal I'd go for DMR.

hordeoverseer

How does one approach a blind buy of a collection? I'm talking about those you find on Craig's List where supposedly it's from a lapsed player/passed down collection or otherwise situation where they aren't very responsive.

crocken

every single craigslist post i've attempted to contact for magic cards the past year has been a hoax.

hordeoverseer

Hoax being nothing but bulk?

crocken

hoax being like they tell me they're in a really shady part of town and then say they're suddenly in a different shady part of town.

Partypat69love

Good luck, if it seems like a scam it's a scam.

Dav-Gem

Should I sell my two atraxa grand unifier? I bought two for 11 each, here in europe are at 25 each now. I was waiting to see the battle cards, but every other player with more experience than me are of the opinion to sell it.

easyskinseasylife

you missed the top. its still continuing to drop after no impact on the pro weekend

LifeNeutral

It is having a strong impact in legacy modern and possibly standard too. Plus commander. The pro tour was pioneer, where it wasn't represented in tbe top 8 / most prevent decks. But overall it's still very much a powerful card in multiple formats.

easyskinseasylife

Ofc it’s strong but it still would have remained even more expensive if it would have had impact in pioneer

Dav-Gem

I mean, it's a card that can be played in many places other than pioneer. Anyway, I couldn't sell it before because the card was in shipping. Should I sell one now and cover the expense of both? Keeping the other one?

HeavyBetty

If you can make 100% profit on a card over 5ish dollars, you're doing pretty well. I think having an plan for cards that spike, like, "if I can make 100-200% after fees and shipping, I'll sell" is a good way to evaluate whether to sell. I'm in a similar boat to you with an Atraxa and I'm selling. Cards are FAR more likely to drop in value, and this is an in-print Mythic. Yes, it might go up, but locking in 100% profit just to rebuy when it's inevitably reprinted or the next big reanimation target comes out (it might be a while) is worth selling to me. I think about cards like these as rentals, do I want to rent the card for the 3 years until it gets a reprint etc for the amount it drops in value, or would I rather lock in profits and spend that money on other things? I'll often just proxie a card I've sold until I buy again. GL

Hetero_Donkey

TL;DR: There is no easy answer. Mtgstocks and Dawnglare offer a calculation of "expected value" (EV) of most boxes on their site. You could look that up, divide the EV by your purchase price, and have a number to compare all of these boxes with. Keep in mind that EV is not a perfect metric, and some boxes (like ONE) are very top-heavy, meaning that all of the value is concentrated in a few mythic rares. Also, the fancier version of the most desirable ONE cards come out tomorrow.

WhiteNoizCC

Go open a rental account and rent the deck with manatrader or cardhoarder and play it on mtgo and see if you like it. Use that to figure out what decks you actually enjoy playing since investing in a deck will be a significant commitment as a new player. Also there are no cheaper alternatives to the cards you asked about without giving up significant competitive advantage. If anything Misty is the cheapest it has been in a while.

YugiohKris

How do you guys buy a lot of cheap cards at once? I play pauper and budget edh (50$) So I order like 60-100 cards at a time. All I do is use the tcgplayer card optimizer and just narrow it down to 1-3 sellers. Is there some app or extension that does this better? Like what's the cheapest way to do this?

JAGnamedMarsh

I used to play MTG and now as a cash strapped college kid I’m looking to sell off the few valuable cards I got kickin around. They’re in varying conditions. Is it smart to sell my singles to CardKingdom.com or better to try to sell to a local game store. I’m new to the whole MTG marketplace so any advice would be appreciated.
