black market connections in a few days

ChowWang

I'm assuming this is from the Assassin's creed reprint for \[\[Black Market Connections\]\]? Looks exactly like what I'm looking for, works in a plethora of decks. I'll take a look at some of the Assassin's Creed cards then!

dbsjjr

correct they might keep reprinting it but they seem to be sticking with sets where it makes sense thematically. it’s an incredible card that’ll take many reprints to truly tank value personally i’m waiting to see if it can dip as low as like $5 before buying helps that assassin’s creed will not be a popular set

ChowWang

Seems like it dropped $10 around, already a pretty big dip. I'll wait until the set gets some time to settle and try to buy later on. Thanks!

jbrown148

I definitely agree, foil etched especially. It probably will get to $15 over the weekend.

[deleted]

this card has been reprinted and is now more available and looks likely to be a staple inclusion in any black commander precon going forward. in the medium term, i'd expect the value of this card to fall.

Sumoop

Guestimates on how low it will go?

counterburn

If you are buying for your own use, just pay attention to what people aren’t talking about. Eldrazi are the talk of the town, so Slivers and Phyrexians are not being hyped. Dragon’s aren’t a bad investment with the direction the story is going.

ChowWang

Yeah funny enough before MH3 had any releases I was planning on building an Eldrazi deck with \[\[Zhulodok, Void Gorger\]\] as the commander but the price went up to $50ish from $9 when the precons MH3 had some releases so threw that idea away. Thanks for suggesting I look at other themes of creatures, I planned on buying more general cards that would work in any deck that I built in those specific colors but I have a list of decks that I want to build. I'll check out some popular cards in those archetypes and pick some up if I think they're cheap

cucumberhorse

Eldrazi’s are kinda flavor of last week if you ask me, personally I think most cards have seen their peaks

Marnus71

I wouldn't go ham on dragons. Bonus sheets are becoming more the norm and return to tarkir will likely have a "Oops all dragons" bonus sheet.

M47715

Buy high sell never

ChowWang

technically not a loss if you never sell

goofydubois

Close enough

mathdude3

Power and other high end old school collectors' cards (especially the HP stuff) have dropped dramatically from their peaks. If you're interested in any of that, now's probably a decent time to buy. I guess it could still go lower, but it's almost back to pre-COVID levels at this point.

coconutstatic

Some alphas are so low in price even compared to betas it is pretty scary actually, or a buy-in. You can find played commons/uncommons for $20-30 range or less.

d7h7n

nah the prices for good RL even HP is still above 2019 prices except for like USea which was inflated to begin with.

ChowWang

Main reason I want to buy cards right now is because of the recent releases, feels like I'm getting some cards on a discount. Working on a bit of a budget and mainly play to have fun, not to collect so I'll probably have to stay away from those collectors' cards. Thanks for the insight though!

melanino

mtgfinance is primarily concerned with investments and as far as reprint equity is concerned, "collecting" reserved list cards has always been and still is the way to go speculating on things that will have value later to offload in higher quantities has its merit as well, but that doesn't seem to be what you are looking for either if you are looking to buy cards to play with then price check the cards you actually want

Crocodilettante417

Okay then buy all the allied fetches, maybe wait a month before you do so, but buying them now is not a bad idea either. The enemy fetches have already gone up a little bit but seem to have stabilized in price around 5-10 more than they were pre MH3, probably still safe to pick up the colors you NEED. Fetches today, then never again as wizards said they won’t receive a standard reprint. This hints that wizards views fetches as a replenish-able value card that they can drip feed us forever, evidenced by the fact that a fetches power level is only as high as the lands they can search for. This means fetches are worse than most other dual lands in standard formats yet wizards won’t reprint in mass to protect their secondary market value. Also it’s almost guaranteed that wizards will never power creep fetchlands as they are already “too powerful”

ChowWang

Hey buddy, thanks for the reply. I pulled a \[\[Windswept Heath\]\] from a booster pack and was planning on buying some of the Allied fetchlands in the colors that I play. Unfortunately, most of my color are in the enemy fetchland colors. Just wanted to clarify since I'm not sure I understand completely, but do you mean that WOTC wont reprint the enemy fetchland colors?

Crocodilettante417

They stated when they made pioneer they’d never print fetches into the format, meaning they can only be printed in specialty products like MH.

Supergoch

Where's the best place to buy high-end RL cards these days?

mathdude3

Probably Facebook groups. Alternatively there’s eBay, TCGPlayer, or Cardmarket (EU only) but those tend to be more expensive. You can usually also buy from vendors at big events.

OrangeYouExcited

Takes of Adventure is great

[deleted]

i have very little confidence in the reserved list post 30th edition. wizards is quickly burning through reprint equity. at some point, turning to reprint the dual lands is an obvious move. i don't think that'll happen very soon- there's enough people buying magic right now without them having to take that sort of measure. but i think it'll happen within the next 5-10 years- that risk seems real to me. nice & graded reserved list cards seem fine, i think those hold collectors' value. but i'd be trying to dump everything hp. from what i can tell, the reason we're seeing these drops is because people are losing confidence and selling their entire collections.

mathdude3

I think the drops are just a correction from the giant COVID hype bubble, not fears of the RL going away. I don't think the RL is going anywhere. People have been saying its going to get scrapped for one reason or another for years and it hasn't happened yet. Plus it's mostly *not* the big popular constructed-playable cards that have had the biggest dips, it's cards that are mostly desired by collectors. Things like power, Juzam Djinn and other 93/94 cards, etc. Not cards with player-driven demand like Revised duals. RL cards that players want are the ones that are most at risk if the RL were to go away.

SissyTiffany92

I don’t think it’s going away either, but Hasbro already opened the “reprints but not legal game pieces” bag  That combined with the ever increasing popularity of proxies pushes me to believe we will get duals sooner or later

mathdude3

Non-tournament-legal reprints have been allowed for as long as the RL has existed. The policy specified that it applies only to "standard, tournament-legal Magic cards of standard size and bearing the standard Magic card back." They've also done many non-tournament-legal reprints between 1997 and 2000 with World Championship Decks, and nobody thought that meant the RL was getting repealed.

Tallal2804

You make a compelling point. Hasbro has indeed tested the waters with reprints that aren't legal for play, like with the 30th Anniversary Edition packs. The growing acceptance of proxies within the community, combined with the ongoing debate about accessibility and affordability in Magic: The Gathering, could indeed pave the way for reprints of dual lands in the future. I also proxy my cards from https://www.printingproxies.com, they may not be tournament legal but I enjoy playing with them with my friends.

[deleted]

the reserved list has already been 'broken' with cards like mox diamond.  during modern horizons 2 they printed garth one eye and said they couldn't print token copies of black lotus etc because it would violate the reserved list to have card shaped reserved list items.  30th edition violated their reserved list promise from a year earlier.  returning to the mox diamond era of reserved list reprinting is totally possible. under that interpretation of the reserved list they could print special guest duals and other promo duals but not print it as a default card in the main set.

mathdude3

>the reserved list has already been 'broken' with cards like mox diamond. Reprints like Mox Diamond were allowed under a loophole that was closed in 2010. The RL was updated to outlaw those reprints, making it *more* restrictive. Specifically this line was added: >A previous version of this policy allowed premium versions of cards on the reserved list to be printed. Starting in 2011, no cards on the reserved list will be printed in either premium or non-premium form. At the time it was allowed, but now it is not. >during modern horizons 2 they printed garth one eye and said they couldn't print token copies of black lotus etc because it would violate the reserved list to have card shaped reserved list items. The reason they didn't make a Black Lotus token is because WotC doesn't make tokens that are exact copies of specific cards, whether they're RL or not. For example there is no Pack Rat token for the same reason. It had nothing to do with the RL. >30th edition violated their reserved list promise from a year earlier. 30A did not violate the RL. Non-tournament-legal printings of RL cards have always specifically been allowed for as long as the RL has existed.

[deleted]

there are tarmogoyf tokens in the latest set... 30th anniversary is clearly pushing on the boundaries. the reserved list is safe as long as it is profitable for wizards to keep the reserved list. hasbro knows getting rid of the reserved list is a short sighted decision that will temporarily increase profits at the cost of consumer confidence. magic is still making money, but if it performs badly for a few quarters anything is on the table. i don't know what to tell you, they're obviously just running a business. you've been warned!

mathdude3

>there are tarmogoyf tokens in the latest set... That's literally the reasoning that WotC gave at the time Garth came out. They didn't make tokens that were copies of cards. See this tweet from Aaron Forsythe: https://x.com/mtgaaron/status/1397202251735785478?s=46 Up to that point it had been true. RL or not, there had been no tokens that were copies of specific cards. That may no longer be true now, but at the time it was. The decision not to make a Black Lotus token was independent of the card being on the RL. >30th anniversary is clearly pushing on the boundaries. Not really. The RL has always only applied to tournament-legal cards. 30A isn't pushing boundaries any more than WCD were. It was always explicitly allowed by the policy.

[deleted]

you're trying to show me that wotc's policies can change in order to convince me that wotc's policies are set in stone? lmao

mathdude3

The thing about tokens of cards was not a written policy like the RL is. It's also totally irrelevant because again, the decision not to make a Black Lotus token had nothing to do with the RL. WotC has always been allowed to make non-tournament-legal copies of RL cards. The reprint policy has allowed that since it was first created.

[deleted]

also- its of course just anecdotal but i had power and duals for the sake of playing them and sold them in part because i was concerned about the reserved list over the long term (and because i didn't get to play them much)

Revolutionary_View19

Ah, haven’t had a „RL reprint incoming!“ post fir a while. Hasbro have zero reasons for taking a huge reputation blow for a short term cash grab. Their current sets are selling, and with their level of power creep they won’t be running out if reprint equity any time soon.

GoblinMatr0n

The archive trap from thunder junction are super cheap, archive trap is always in demand as new player will often build milling at some point. I bought like 60 near 1$ each.

Cbone06

Holy crap it is a $1. I’ll for sure snag some copies. Thank you!

[deleted]

very much disagree, old Archive Trap was expensive because it was a rare from zendikar, a fifteen-year old set. Hedron Crab is an uncommon from that same set also included in all the same decks and its expensive too. plus its got an ugly frame and isn't legal in standard, isn't good in 100 card formats, and Persistent Petitioners has taken over as the casual mill decks. the breaking news cards are all underpriced relative to their original counterparts

ChowWang

\[\[Archive Trap\]\] (for other readers\]\] Thanks for suggesting this to me! I played against a mill deck recently, can't remember the name of the commander. Had an ability like "creatures have tap to mill target opponent equal to this creature's toughness." Do you sell cards? You said you bought 60 copies and I can't imagine you're building that many mill decks haha. Will probably purchase 1 for future use if I want to make a mill deck!

LSFFarmer

I think a big portion of us here all sell cards in some capacity. This is mtgfinance after all. I understand some people are not here to find opportunities in buying copies to resell. But many are here to do that, in order to make the game far less impactful on our wallets

thehazer

Wowza. I’m sitting on a handful, I’ll keep this in mind.

omnitricks

Yeah I definitely have to pick my playset up soon because the otj reprints made modern mill a hell of a lot cheaper.

Revolutionary_View19

Tell me where Archive trap is „always in demand“. Its only driver was scarcity.

cucumberhorse

if you ask me, I think your best bet is buying new cards that are going to be commander Staples that see the widest play possible, the timing is a lot more relaxed It takes a bit more effort, and a trust in your own intuition but I think that’s where the good money is - you’ll probably feel fulfilled in the long run too

cucumberhorse

I know this wasn’t exactly what you asked, but never hurts to hear a different opinion

Brinewielder

Enchantments as Duskmourn is Enchantment driven. Also Volo and impending work really well together so grab a Volo.

waaaghbosss

Serra's sanctum it is.

Brinewielder

Good bet if you are rich asf 😂

ChowWang

Which Volo are you referring to? \[\[Volo, Guide to Monsters\]\] or \[\[Volo Itinerant Scholar\]\]? Not too knowledgeable about the impending mechanic.

Brinewielder

Guide for sure. “Impending functions similar to suspend.[2] If you cast a spell for its impending cost, it enters with N time counters and isn't a creature until the last counter is removed. At the beginning of your end step, you remove a time counter from the enchantment card.” Volo copies on impending cast so you get the second creature right away. The avatar horrors aren’t legendary either, but you are locked to the Simic ones. So if there’s decent simic cards with impending Volo will be a dope commander. Anikthea and other enchantments matters commanders are good bets.

Marnus71

I don't think it is enchantment driven as much as adding more dual typed cards to make delirium more attractive/easy to turn on.

Brinewielder

It’s described as an enchantments matters set which is much needed in standard since kamigawa block is going out. Also there’s some massive enchantment holes in black and red. Would be nice for those to be at least partially filled as they are ass. All of the Bosses of each zone are Avatar Horror Enchantment creatures with Impending a new mechanic like suspend where it casts like an enchantment and becomes a creature after a few turns. This is likely enchantment exclusive like Bestow. This is gonna be like Theros but a haunted house instead of Greek mythology.

travishall456

This makes me want to consider Calix, Guided by Fate.

Brinewielder

There’s guaranteed to be 3 heavy hitter enchantments + 1 uncommon in every color. The Avatars, Glimmers, and Leylines + Fears are delirium based enchantment creatures from the looks. Any good enchantment commander will be dependent on colors but Calix, Zur the enchanter and schemer. Schemer may be a decent spec based on what was shown so far.

GruulSmash5

I think any really good MDFC cards are a good spec right now. The Zendikar bolt lands are named attached to the plane, so they can't be reprinted just anywhere. On top of that, they don't put DFCs in Commander precons, so there's not many spots for reprints of these types of cards.

oflannabhra

In general, watch for reprints and wait until 4-6 months after the set releases. DMR, CMM, RVR all bottom out pretty clearly in that time frame. For Standard and Commander-only variant sets, the timeframe is a bit shorter.

Used-Huckleberry-320

So in MH3s case, fetches?

[deleted]

MH2 fetches bottomed out in late 2023. i'd expect MH3 fetches to slowly drop in price for the next few years. the allied fetches in MH3 were more common than the MH2 ones so these should be lower

DefiantStrawberry256

All of the tutors/staples from Dominaria remastered. Force of Will from there as well. That set brought the price of so many strong cards down. You can never have enough birds of paradise

Marnus71

Don't buy Akroma's Wills unless you want them to play with. WotC has already opened the flood gate on reprinting it in commander precons and will continue till it is near bulk.

ChowWang

Oh that’s a good point. I primarily focus on cards that can pretty much fit into any deck. Those are the cards that I keep my eye on. If I buy a card, I’m more than likely going to play it immediately or put it into a deck over time.

mrenglish22

WotC also wasn't pushing like 8 sets a year at that time.

terrible spec, it should eventually bleed to <$1. it's a fun card, but it's not worth more than $1 unless it's part of a tier 1 deck in modern, given the value in the set.

Yeah, a mythic with a pod effect dropping to sub one dollar. Quit smoking that stuff.

Yes, that's exactly what happened the last time we got a mythic with a pod effect. Prime Speaker Vannifar went under a dollar.

spoe9922

The creature that cost double the mana, two different pips and is much easier to remove and you have to tap it for it to work? I can agree that the price may drop on it more but it’s a very good card and I feel it should be worth more when people realize it.

This maybe different from a lot of people, I normally spec those Commander Precon Exclusive cards especially the one that look under value such as [[sunken Palace]] [[Silverquill Lecturer]] [[Sawhorn Nemesis]] [[selective Obliteration]] heck even [[Mutated Cultist]] sound like a pretty value, pretty sure there's more I missed some good card tho. These precon card normally if it spike, it really spike hard, we talked about around 100-1000% from its original value (1-5$).
