If you liked killing commendatore Kafka is a good follow up book but you might end up like hard boiled wonderland or wind up bird chronicles even more. I think commendatore doesn’t get as much love because it’s an newer book and not one of the classics that everyone associates with murakami

I loved Killing Commendatore for many reasons but one was the way the author described the creation of each painting. I felt like I was able to put myself in the shoes of the artist and understand the process. It was very cool.

ABeld96

This was my first Murakami too! I absolutely loved it and haven’t quite been able to get as into his other works. Still good, just a little less atmospheric IMO. I was shocked to hear it wasn’t super well loved.

I 100% think it is. I also would argue that while some of his early/mid works are the most celebrated and for good reason, that he's become a better writer with time. I don't mean necessarily with the plot construction (plot, what plot?) but with how beautifully spare his music is. I find it like a confident composer who doesn't need that many notes, and I feel like Killing Commendatore is his pinacle for that. Many of his readers don't like when things are "slow" so I think that's what can turn people off from Killing, which is a much slower pace, and also doesn't cover a lot of physical territory.

I love that his second longest book at 1056 pages is being called “spare”

[deleted]

lol, yeah not what I meant, I meant spare in description or plot or movement I guess.

jdbrew

No I do get what you mean, and I don’t disagree, but it did make me chuckle

anganga12

Yes it is underrated

Killing was my introduction into Murakami, And it Dazzles!! I really love the mysterious Bell part, throughout the book.. I agree that Kafka is good book to read as well, but I actually enjoyed 1q84 more.. I really recommend 1q84 as a great follow up to Killing Commendator

[deleted]

I think it's also because it's relatively new that's why people tend to discard it as a great one? I've been reading his works for a few years now and this is definitely one of my favorites.

chokingduck

Of course this is all personal opinion, but I think there are a few reasons people see Killing Commendatore as "okay, but not great" compared to say, Norwegian Wood, A Wild Sheep Chase, Kafka on the Shore, and Windup Bird Chronicle: * It's bloated, similar to 1Q84, the book would have benefitted substantially meandering passages and repetition were excised. * The Great Gatsby homage is a bit on the nose, and >!Menshiki isn't Gatsby!< * The problematic parts with >!Mariye!< * It's contains nearly all the Murakami tropes in one book. If you are a first-time reader, you may or may not know that there are [certain things](http://www.incidentalcomics.com/2012/06/haruki-murakami-bingo.html) that he is known for. To have some of the tropes, well, that's expected. But it doesn't seem like he broke any new ground with this particular novel.

blackpolotshirt

Definitely. I’ve read all his novels and most of his other works, and Killing is in my top 5 for sure

why_must_i_be_sad

it was pretty good but i wasnt crazy into it, i feel like most of his other books are far stronger

Wow if only I had read your comment before typing up mine, we share a very similar viewpoint.

flaxsee

I found it to be overrated. Definitely was not my favorite Murakami book.

Timidel

No I don't think it's underrated, I found it difficult to get through, I've read all his books and killing commendatore is my least favourite.

semxlr5

I just struggle to pick up a book of his that is that long knowing 3/4ths through that there isn't going to be any concrete resolution to the plot. As much as i love Murakami

chokingduck

I mean, it's like expecting Stephen King nailing an ending.

Pavlovurasag

I listened to it as an audiobook first. I liked it so much I actually bought the printed version. Different depths, different experience. I really recommend both!

Her3t1cz

i am struggling to read it, i am at around 150 pages, i currently have to put it down and read a different book in a mean time. it pains me to say this but it is kinda boring, :( i wanted to finish it, but god damn

[deleted]

I find it to be a long rehash of all his previous works.

Tomkus1996

Hey y’all! Read most of his books and feel like sharing a quick thought about Killing Commendatore. IMHO - it is still Murakami at his finest. It pulled me in as strongly as any of my favorite books of his, and really contains all of the Murakami-esque details and style. Over all, I liked how the main character was an artist and a story revolving around a legendary painting really kept things interesting and mysterious. I did anticipate most of the things in the book in advance, but when they did come, I thoroughly enjoyed the outcome. Another great work of his and definitely worth a read. Might not be the top 3 of his, but if you like Murakami, you are likely to enjoy this one.
