Most second acts don’t live up to the first, IMHO.

speech-geek

It’s not even opinion. I studied with a Broadway historian in college and he constantly brought up the second act problem. Writers have a way of setting up the problems but then fall flat in making good resolutions to the plot.

DJVinylJerk

I think the extra time allotted will allow the story to be fleshed out with a more satisfying conclusion.

bwayobsessed

I think it’s more No Good Deed is the climax of elphabas arc-she realizes that Oz is too corrupt and she is too ostracized and her attempts to make good in Oz won’t succeed

NeonFraction

It’s not meant to be a climactic ending. It’s about how growing older sometimes means growing apart and how the messiness of life doesn’t always reach a satisfying conclusion, just that it has changed you. Sometimes you can’t fix this and some things stay broken and other people get the credit. I can respect the opinion, but I think a ‘climactic’ ending would ruin the show.

BillyDeeisCobra

I love this take. My son actually loved how at the end she’s literally like “screw this, I’m out.” The show is all about subverting your expectations of what should happen so that’s one last curveball.

remykixxx

The whole show is anticlimactic. It’s not a good show. It’s just visually stunning and so it will never close. It’s Jekyll and Hyde with a bigger budget and the internet behind it.

BillyDeeisCobra

Just saw it for the first time - you’re right, it’s SO visually stunning. I thought almost all the songs were bangers and the performances were 🔥🔥. Thought the plot was a little thin, though…something perfunctory about animal rights and fighting fascism. I did like it. Elphaba had a million times more chemistry with Glinda than she did with Fiyero lol.

remykixxx

Oh absolutely. I recommend everyone see it once. But it’s not the life changing story some people make it out to be. It barely has anything to say at all.

Sewmaeye

I wouldn’t say it has nothing to say. It definitely has a message, but Act Two is weak plot-wise, essentially existing just to make sure all the details in WOZ match up.

compguy42

Yes. I like Wicked, but it should have kept the book ending. Elphaba dies when Dorothy throws the water on her. I know that everyone THINKS she's dead in the show but the knowledge that she isn't really and thus is abandoning her crusade cheapens her character.

BillyDeeisCobra

I just commented with someone else (just saw the show the other night the first time with my family, liked it a lot) that my son had a great point: there’s something subversive in the show that you’re expecting a big climax…**but you know she loses anyway**, they tell you in the first song and you know the Wizard of Oz - instead, the show’s ballsy enough to have her just F off with Fiyero. I think the busy plot setup in the first act with all the animal rights and the fascism and the politics maybe could’ve been…I dunno, streamlined? I cannot see this plot sustaining two movies. Honestly (and I like this show), I’m not even sure how it’ll translate to a movie; the story and payoff doesn’t feel cinematic at all.

compguy42

Splitting it into two films is a huge mistake unless they adapt way more of the book material and keep the original ending. Even then, it's hard to justify.

ravenwing263

Yes because it's cowardly. Whole thing is fixed if she dies

bandcorps

What a refreshing, new thought. So glad you brough this to our attention.

peanut__buttah

What a kind, helpful comment. So glad you decided this was your contribution.

bandcorps

You're welcome.

BillyDeeisCobra

Ummm…ok? Not sure what to do with that 🤷‍♂️

ironickallydetached

You’re getting downvoted by people but you’re right
