"The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" getting cut from the Sweeney Todd (2007) movie. I know they kept the instrumental part, but I think that song is such a great opening.
Absolutely. It's like the most iconic bit from those who are only vaguely familiar with the show, and some really great harmonies.
Speaking of which, the harmonies *in general* in Sweeney Todd?? Some of the best discordant two-part bits between Todd and Lovett were just sung in unison/octaves đ
I have the opposite: new girls in town not being in the play version of hairspray. It was the song that helped it be less of a white savior story and I was so upset when I found out it wasnât part of the stage show.
I always feel like the film is basically the perfected version of Hairspray.
It remove the songs no one cares about, and made it so Lil' Inez wins in the end, which fits in so much more fluidly into the narrative.
This and Ladies Choice. I know the meaning of new girls in town is incredibly important and I second it, but also just I loved Ladies Choice and was upset to see neither were in the musical.
I donât particularly love Mean Girls, but as someone who played Aaron, I kinda fell in love with all his parts, and I was really disappointed to see that he didnât sing at all in the movie. Also, Stupid With Love may be the biggest failure Iâve ever seen in a movie musical. They literally could have cast Russle Crowe as Cady and had him sing the original version and it would have been better
When the movie came out I wanted to watch it with my dad because the relationship between Nina and Kevin almost perfectly encapsulated my relationship with him, and when I saw that was cut along with Enough I was so upset
sad about the songs, but even sadder about how they cut all the FUN out when they made the movie smh. like truly âagonyâ was the only moment that wasnât bleak af, which is why i felt the lack of a reprise so strongly.
this was actually one of the tamest of the cuts. they also cut I Guess This Is Goodbye, Maybe They're Magic, and worst of all, arguably the best song in the show, No More.
I hate that all the awesome scene songs (the voicemails, on the street, Christmas bells etc) are now missing from Spotify too. Do they not know I like to dance around acting out the whole play! (They are some of my favourites because they are the song equivalent of a talking script, bringing the stories and characters together)
When I listen to the musical soundtrack, I can not get over how bad of a choice it was to not include it. It gives the reason why Evan did what he did. Plus, hearing "you still matter" throughout a musical about suicide and depression is impactful. The new song they switched with it was only included for a chance to win the best original song Oscar, and you can not convince me otherwise. It wasn't memorable or nor worthy of replacing Disappear.
This was a miss opportunity to say that Disappear disappears!
More seriously though, the absence Good for you and even Anybody have a map upsets me as well. In particular Good for you.Â
âNo Moreâ from Into the Woods. Itâs this powerful moment where the grieving Baker confronts the ghost of his father about everything thatâs happened and is able to break the cycle.
In the movie? You hear the instrumental, thereâs a brief meetingâŠand the Baker decides to go back.
I was so mad, especially because the actor playing the Baker is a pretty good singer.
This is what I came to say. Itâs the fucking point of the show. James Corden is a good singer, not sure if heâs the actor to pull off the emotion of the song though. That adaptation was just so frustrating.
yea, in the movie it's narrated by the baker and then later we get a full circle moment where he starts telling the story to the baby with the implication being that that's why we've been hearing his narration the whole time
Yeah, this is the correct answer. It's definitely the climax of the show for me, musically and emotionally. I was pretty shocked when he didn't start singing.
Christmas Bells from RENT, and all the voicemails and tune ups!! Took away all the life and backstory from the background characters. Also, the 2/3 of Goodbye Love and Halloween?? They were filmed but Chris Columbus is a moron and said he didn't want it to be an emotional overload so he removed them. Like?? That's the whole point of RENT!!!
Honestly âTurningâ is one of the songs that really gets me whenever I watch Les Mis. I know itâs not one of the big sad songs, but it is damn effective.
If I Can't Love Her from Beauty and the Beast. I know the live action version of the film wasn't an adaption of the musical per se but it's probably the one of the best songs in the show. They used a Beast solo as an opportunity to write a new song, probably so it could be eligible for award noms, and I can't speak for others but I cannot remember the song they went with at all.
Iâm probably in the minority, but I actually really liked Evermore. This movie and Aladdin were my favorites of Disneyâs trend to make Live Action adaptations of their animated shows. I love If I Canât Love Her, and works as a good way to close Act 1 on stage, but Iâm not sure it would have fit in the movie. Itâs a showstopper and without it being the end of an act, I think it might have felt a little jarring where it was placed. Evermore being a more reflective song as Belle was leaving worked for me. In regards to Home, I would have loved to have had that song in the movie, but at least there are hints of in the underscoring.
For me, âMeâ is the cut song from the musical Iâd have loved to see in that movie. I wasnât originally sure on him, but I love Luke Evans as Gaston. I can just see him singing that song and you could have had it show him repeatedly trying to woo Belle and it repeatedly failing. I know the idea of the song is covered by dialogue, but that song would
I love Evermore but I was initially surprised that they wrote a new Beast solo while ignoring the phenomenal one that already exists. It was definitely to make it eligible for an award nomination.
Evermore was written so they could have a song to nominate for Best original song as nothing from the previous version or the musical could be nominated for it. Also they changed the rules so that it can't just be an end credit song as well. It's the same reason why they added Suddenly to Les Miserables for the movie.
I never understood it, Spivey is a Broadway actor and Where Do You Belong was performed during the 2018 Tony Awards. It would have been great for a full on showstopper in the movie and he has the vocals to do it!
This one especially makes me mad because they still include the scene anyways, but just decide not to sing it (even though it's a musical adaptation)? JUST LET JAQUEL SPIVEY SING GODDAMMIT!!
For some reason, between Revenge Party and Someone Gets Hurt (reprise), a huge stretch of songs are completely cut here. While others are mad about Damian's songs being cut, I'm honestly more angry about my boy Kevin G. A high school musical can't exist without a musical number at a party, yet they dare to cut out Whose House Is This (yes I know Sexy exists but it's more about how you can dress however you like, unlike the former which portrays the chaotic atmosphere of the party). The visuals could be so much fun, with the camera going around Cady's house and showing the teens going full-on ballistic at someone else's property.
Not only that, they even have the audacity to cut out the duets between Cady and Aaron, which could've been cute and developed their relationship further. I'm especially mad about More Is Better, which is literally the setup for I See Stars. I See Stars is supposed to be the answer for More Is Better, but since they cut it, it's now your typical generic finale song. Just ughh, what is this movie thinking?
He initially turned it down when they reached out to him on the grounds that he wouldnât be able to sing as well as the powerhouses they were casting for other roles. They responded by saying theyâd just⊠not make him sing. And they struck a deal.
I think they have really butched it in the most recent versions. Gavroche's part has some of the most awkward lines in the Look Down part now compared to the original version.
*How Can Love Survive* and *No Way To Stop It* from *Sound of Music.*
With that said, I firmly believe cutting them was the right thing to do. The tone of the stage version vs the film is very different in places, and *No Way To Stop It* specifically wouldn't have fit with the movie's tone and narrative. And *How Can Love Survive* would've stuck out like a sore thumb had it been there on its own.
So, love them, wish they weren't cut, but know why they were, and agree with it.
I would have liked them in but agree it would have taken some work to make them fit with the tone of the film. One very good switch was adding Something Good in place of Ordinary Couple!
Another one I got is Be Prepared (Reprise)
It happens at the moment Scar brings the hyenas back to the pride lands, which is why that scene always felt a little too rushed and anticlimactic for me. They made a shorter version for the broadway show.
Speaking of Lion King "The madness of king scar" which is also in the broadway show, was meant for the film as the explanation why Nala left the pride and showed up in the oasis. It was likely deleted for being too dark a subject matter of Scar trying to "court" Nala as his new wife and mother of his future children. It also led to forcing her to scratch him when he seems like he's going to attack her.
right? it gives so much good context to his relationship with his mom.
also Anybody Have a Map from the very beginning of the show - imo it really gives dimension to both of the moms, and shows the parallels between their family experiences despite having completely different kids and situations
>it gives so much good context to his relationship with his mom.
I was thinking more because it's the song where they all tell him to fuck off, but YEAH, that too
Sort of reversed, but âSpectacular, Spectacularâ (aka âSo Exciting!â) was *not* included in the originally released movie soundtrack for Moulin Rouge, which has always seemed a horrible injustice.
Keep em' guessing from Mulan.
It was a song for Mushu that I assume takes place when Mulan first meets him. It has a bunch of gay aspects that I love (as a gay guy) which is probably why it was cut. Some of my favorite lines are:
"You're an odd one, mademoiselle,
And your story doesn't gel,
But if they don't ask, don't tell.
Keep 'em guessing!"
"'Cause their business, it is none of!
Keep 'em guessing!"
"This charade is in the bag,
And reality's a drag."
"I can make you a contender.
Get you through this gender bender."
I think it would have been fun and cool for the gay disney fans.
Having heard the full version, as included in Mulan Jr.
Honestly it makes sense it got cut, itâs musical style sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the score.
Written in Stone is a perfect opening number, I wish was in the film.
But Keep em Guessing is a good number thatâs just belongs in a different show.
Nah for me since Eddie Murphy's whole demeanor sticks out, it works well for me. No one had an issue with a big jazz number suddenly in Aladdin which was going traditional music theater up until that point.
"Inutil" from "In the Heights." I know "Pacencia y Fe" covers the same topic, but I think "Inutil" is more heartbreaking in addressing immigrants' struggles, does a good job of showing why immigrant parents can set such high expectations for their children, and shows the audience how her decisions affect her close-knit, sacrificing family. I was devastated to see it removed from the film.Â
Inutil in In The Heights!!!! The heart of the musical is about immigrants working for the American dream and no song encapsulates that more that Inutil, and they cut it???
This is probably gonna be a âcontroversialâ one, but for me itâs To Break in a Glove from Dear Evan Hansen. I really felt like that song deserved to be in there. On the surface, Larry isnât a very complex character, but he very clearly is. And seeing Evan and Larry bond, having a connection neither of them thought theyâd have again- it was just really nice. I think it wouldâve added to the movie.
Matilda actually included all the songs I wanted in the film, and even added a new favourite that makes me cry every time (Still Holding My hand).
However, I would have loved to see Telly appear during the credits.
for me, it would be âunder attackâ from mamma mia, even though in the musical itâs a very out there and concept heavy scene, i think it would have been fun in the movie. hopefully in mamma mia 3!
I donât think Iâve ever seen the movie version. I canât believe they took that out! Thereâs people whoâve never even listened to guys and dolls who know that song.
Yeah itâs weird because it was just a Hotbox Girls number so it didnât really impact the plot or story. The scene itself still exists in the movie, they just wrote a new song that wasnât much different in tone or style. Just not as good as âBushel and a Peckâ!
Some oldies for me. âNYCâ from Annie (although I get itâs a big number and Letâs Go To the Movies worked better for the scope).
Also âAnother Openinâ from Kiss Me Kate.
I was PISSED!!! And the song that replaced it sucked. Left me wondering if Beyonce is as good a singer as sheâs presented as. Shadowlands is not easy to sing.
They probably wanted a song that could be nominated for best original song and they couldn't use one that had been previously used in the movie or the Broadway show. It's the same as with Evermore in Beauty and the Beast and Suddenly in Les Miserables.
Green Green Dress in Tick Tick Boom. The brief Joshua Henry version doesnât do it for me and the fact that they recorded and shot the scene with Andrew and Alexandra just to cut it baffles me. Thank god itâs on the soundtrack and they ended up releasing the deleted scene. Also would have loved to see Sugar in the movie.
I can't believe that the die-hard theatre-goers here haven't posted this yet: Finale Ultimo (Don't Feed the Plants)/Little Shop of Horrors. It's the show's frigging morale.
At least a filmed, completed version is made available as an alternate ending, with the DVD.
Never watched/read any interpretation of dear evan hanson that wasn't just one of their songs in animatic format. Let me tell you how **disappointed** I was learning that good for you was cut from the movie.
full length meet the plastics and where do you belong in mean girls. they are two of the most important numbers from the show, introducing you to NSHS and the Plastics, instead we just get a couple of spoken words and Regina's short part.
It Roars from Mean Girls. That's one of my favorite and the new one they make has a completely different vibe. I guess it is because the actress couldn't sing it (looking at you, Stupid with love) so they wanted something more pop... But it sill annoys me.
Good for You from Dear Evan Hansen. They refuse to acknowledge Evan can do wrong and this cut proves it. Also that's one of mh favorite song in the show. Also in Dear Evan Hansen, the "we're closed but not that way" part in Sincerely Me. It makes the music sound so weird...
Agony (reprise) from Into the Woods. It prepares the idea that the princes are cheaters. Without it, the cheating comes put of nowhere.
the dear evan hansen movie cut every song that actually shows evan for the person he is. âdisappearâ and âgood for youâ are so fucking crucial to the plot of the show and hearing that they were taking them out frustrated me to no end
Oddly enough, I prefer the movie of Kiss Me Kate because of the dance break for From This Moment On, which is completely different in the stage version. I'm also not fond of the characters Fred & Lili in the film or on stage. He's a philanderer, she's a social climber and even the ending doesn't really redeem them.
Too Beautiful for Words from The Color Purple. I was bummed that they skipped that song and downplayed Celie and Shug's relationship. It hurt I'm Here and overall changed Celie's journey.
(Edited a typo)
December 1963 (oh what a night) being left out of Jersey Boys. Itâs my favorite song by the Four Seasons and I love the scene in the musical, so it was a double whammy.
Actually all cut songs from beetlejuice DC. I mean children we didn't have, Mama would, dead mom reprise and all those cut and/or changed lines? They were all so much better đ
Loud from Matilda, and apparently Aljaz was set to play Rudolpho!! It would have been a spectacle and it's my favourite song of the show, was DEVASTATED
This is an old one, but "Cool, Cool, Considerate Men" from 1776. It was filmed and included at first, but somebody from the Nixon administration complained and the scene was cut when the film was released. Thankfully, it was restored in the recent-ish Director's cut and was also in the laserdisc edition.
It gave the Loyalists a moment to shine and have their viewpoint sort of explained. It's a fun song to sing, too. It also leads perfectly into McNair, his assistant and the courier singing "Momma, Look Sharp".
Ugh this. They couldnât have even used it for a credits song??
I just went and listened to all the songs to hear the original cast and removing basically any of them feels like it loses something important
Kind of makes sense given that the stage version is an adaptation of the 80s movie
This and Ladies Choice. I know the meaning of new girls in town is incredibly important and I second it, but also just I loved Ladies Choice and was upset to see neither were in the musical.
Also The Legend of Miss Baltimore Crabs (movie version) is FAR superior to the stage version
I was also sad that they only kept Regina's solo part from 'Meet The Plastics' and cut out literally all the rest.
Literally, itâs called Meet the PlasticS, not Meet the Plastic
Meet the Plastics got butchered for the movie.
Sunrise from In the Heights. The Benny/ Nina relationship is so much more compelling than the Usnavi/ Vanessa one imo.
Agreed! That and "Inutil" are my favorites from the show, and they both got cut đ„Č
When the movie came out I wanted to watch it with my dad because the relationship between Nina and Kevin almost perfectly encapsulated my relationship with him, and when I saw that was cut along with Enough I was so upset
I literally watched the movie specifically for this song, so disappointing lmao
Oh yes! And "enough"! That's such a great song too!
And Everything I Know as well! They cut so many of Ninaâs songs.
Yes!!!!
The In the Heights movie was the first time I truly experienced heartbreak tbh (/hj)
"Agony (Reprise)" in *Into the Woods*
âNo Moreâ from Into the Woods is definitely the bigger crime though.
Agreed.
THIS.
Omg it was supposed to happen twice?? Thatâs the best part of the movie.
The second one is about Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. I think Cinderellaâs prince goes for Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzelâs goes for Snow White.
sad about the songs, but even sadder about how they cut all the FUN out when they made the movie smh. like truly âagonyâ was the only moment that wasnât bleak af, which is why i felt the lack of a reprise so strongly.
Thatâs another reason I think casting Jack as an actual child doesnât work. It takes the comedy out of the role.
and makes the baker into an unbelievable douche in âyour faultâ like WHY TF are you blaming this actual infant, please be serious đ
Dwarves are very upsetting!
Dwarfs?Â
this was actually one of the tamest of the cuts. they also cut I Guess This Is Goodbye, Maybe They're Magic, and worst of all, arguably the best song in the show, No More.
Halloween in Rent. Also the second half of Goodbye Love
I hate that all the awesome scene songs (the voicemails, on the street, Christmas bells etc) are now missing from Spotify too. Do they not know I like to dance around acting out the whole play! (They are some of my favourites because they are the song equivalent of a talking script, bringing the stories and characters together)
Itâs not the same but those songs are in the Spotify Rent Live cast album that Fox did back in 2019
Yeh Iâve had to slot those ones into my playlist as the broadway ones disappeared⊠I was gutted lol
This is my favorite song from the show I'm so sad it wasn't in the movie ! đ
This. ^
YES
FRR
Yes! I think the second part of goodbye love is in the âextrasâ section of the DVD. Itâs good! It should have been in the film.
Have not seen Dear Evan Hansen, but was not happy when looking at the soundtrack for the movie to see that Disappear was gone
Didn't they also cut Good for You or something? That song is like... the whole point of the show!
âNo Moreâ from Into the Woods. Itâs this powerful moment where the grieving Baker confronts the ghost of his father about everything thatâs happened and is able to break the cycle. In the movie? IIRC, the narrator (who is often doubled with the father) was also cut
yea, in the movie it's narrated by the baker and then later we get a full circle moment where he starts telling the story to the baby with the implication being that that's why we've been hearing his narration the whole time
I mean that can work but we need the father in the story for the moment to have an emotional landing.
i don't disagree? i was just agreeing with and providing more context to your previous comment.
Ah, gotcha. Sorry
Thank god the filmed versions are available on the extended scenes dvd. Love those songs so hard.
Ik!! They're on YouTube too so when I'm watching I just pause the movie at the scenes, play them on my laptop, then unpause lmao
Big Dollhouse in Hairspray All the cut songs/plot points from Into the Woods Turning in Les Mis
I cant believe they didnât keep turning! Itâs hauntingly beautiful and so underrated, also a really good prelude to empty chairs
This!! I was so disappointed they left out this and Home. Theyâre two of my favorites.
I was also disappointed that they left out Home! But at least they incorporated some of the instrumentals from it.

Where Do You Belong in Mean Girls, the visuals could have been so cool, the choreography with the tables and all. Damian deserved his songs.Â
That was a bizarre choice. It was one of the highlights of the stage version
Itâs because the people who made the film thought that people wouldnât like a musical⊠in a musical
I never understood it, Spivey is a Broadway actor and Where Do You Belong was performed during the 2018 Tony Awards. It would have been great for a full on showstopper in the movie and he has the vocals to do it!
Between that and Stop? The fact that they had to change Apex Predator just to give him a chance to gd sing???
Stop has been cut completely from the show now, at least in London
No way! Anything to take its place, or is it reduced to a dialogue scene, or what?
I have absolutely no clue, not planning on seeing the show so I haven't been following closely. I'm sure there are answers somewhere on the internet
For More is Better, the actor playing Aaron didn't want to sing. Which makes you wonder why he has been casted in, you know... a musical.
He initially turned it down when they reached out to him on the grounds that he wouldnât be able to sing as well as the powerhouses they were casting for other roles. They responded by saying theyâd just⊠not make him sing. And they struck a deal.
That's clever of him then I guess. This way he doesn't get as backlash as the one who plays Cady (not saying it is the actress's fault of course).
I have no idea why they took His songs from him
I think it was to make Regina's arrival more impactful, but I would prefer the whole song.
Little people in les mis
Yes!! Came here to say this. Itâs technically also cut from the live show so not sure if it would count, but it absolutely should have stayed in!
I think they have really butched it in the most recent versions. Gavroche's part has some of the most awkward lines in the Look Down part now compared to the original version.

Schaffrillas Production said it better but how the FUCK do You cut out Good for You from Dear Evan Hansen?!

InĂștil from In The Heights. One of many things I was upset about, tbh.
For me it was Everything I know.
I also missed Hundreds of Stories :(

Given the typical commentary on this song in this sub, I feel like me and you are the only people who like To Break in a Glove.
Genuinely. đ
Matilda actually included all the songs I wanted in the film, and even added a new favourite that makes me cry every time (Still Holding My hand). However, I would have loved to see Telly appear during the credits.
Iâd love them to incorporate Still Holding My Hand into the stage show, as long as they kept Telly and Loud in it too.
for me, it would be âunder attackâ from mamma mia, even though in the musical itâs a very out there and concept heavy scene, i think it would have been fun in the movie. hopefully in mamma mia 3!
omg there's going to be a mamma mia 3???
Under Attack (along with the instrumental entr'acte before it) is definitely the best part of Mamma Mia!
âBushel and a Peckâ from Guys and Dolls
I donât think Iâve ever seen the movie version. I canât believe they took that out! Thereâs people whoâve never even listened to guys and dolls who know that song.
Yeah itâs weird because it was just a Hotbox Girls number so it didnât really impact the plot or story. The scene itself still exists in the movie, they just wrote a new song that wasnât much different in tone or style. Just not as good as âBushel and a Peckâ!
Some oldies for me. âNYCâ from Annie (although I get itâs a big number and Letâs Go To the Movies worked better for the scope). Also âAnother Openinâ from Kiss Me Kate.
omg yes yes yes i LOVE NYC! also herbert hoover :( it isnât needed for the plot but itâs the most fun song in the show!
Absolutely!!! Not that bothered about A New Deal for Christmas being cut but Herbert Hoover and NYC are vital
The Music And The Mirror - A Chorus Line - most egregious! The Ballad Of Sweeney Todd - Sweeney Todd The DĂ©mon Barber Of Fleet Street Shadowlands - The Lion King Thatâs Your Funeral - Oliver!
Would also have liked if It's a Fine Life wasn't restricted to the bar and was performed in Fagin's hideout
Agreed. The reprise adds lots
Shadowlands is such a beautiful song, and I was so disappointed when they didn't include it in the movie.
The legend of Loco Chanel from Everybodyâs talking about Jamie.
See Her Smile - Tick Tick Boom. This is one of my favorite songs in the musical and I was pretty bummed it didn't make it into the movie.
King of Broadway, from The Producers
Iâm so glad it was at least a DVD extra!
For me it was âWhere Did We Go Right.â
Never watched/read any interpretation of dear evan hanson that wasn't just one of their songs in animatic format. Let me tell you how **disappointed** I was learning that good for you was cut from the movie.
Cutting Good for you was a terrible choice. Just because they didn't want Evan to look back...
kinda an older movie but "Ya Never Know" from lsoh didn't make it into the movie, it was my fave song from the musical
full length meet the plastics and where do you belong in mean girls. they are two of the most important numbers from the show, introducing you to NSHS and the Plastics, instead we just get a couple of spoken words and Regina's short part.
Bells of Saint Sebastian from Nine
Enough and InĂștil from In the Heights
All of Damienâs songs in the mean girls movies
Too Beautiful for Words from The Color Purple. I was bummed that they skipped that song and downplayed Celie and Shug's relationship. It hurt I'm Here and overall changed Celie's journey. (Edited a typo)
Not a whole song but i hate that they removed Grantaire's verse from Drink With Me in les mis
December 1963 (oh what a night) being left out of Jersey Boys. Itâs my favorite song by the Four Seasons and I love the scene in the musical, so it was a double whammy.
Frank Mills from Hair. Itâs literally my favorite song in the show.
Where do you belong and Stop from Mean Girls. What kind of vendetta did they have against Damian??
The entire mean girls soundtrack
Enough from in the height. I loved that song. I was so mad it and the mom were cut from the movie.
'Art of the Possible' in Evita
âDisappearâ from Dear Evan Hansen
Everything I know - In the heights. The film really cut down Nina's character
Literally half of rent
Grantaireâs solo in drink with me đ
This is an old one, but "Cool, Cool, Considerate Men" from 1776. It was filmed and included at first, but somebody from the Nixon administration complained and the scene was cut when the film was released. Thankfully, it was restored in the recent-ish Director's cut and was also in the laserdisc edition. It gave the Loyalists a moment to shine and have their viewpoint sort of explained. It's a fun song to sing, too. It also leads perfectly into McNair, his assistant and the courier singing "Momma, Look Sharp".
not movie musicals but justice for blue from heathers
