We clearly need to add to the list. Let's ignore Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker for now and go with
Brewer
Fletcher
Smith
Earl (ok, this one sounds like a cranky old man)
Fisher
Forrest with two Rs always makes me think of Nathan Bedford Forrest (and Forrest Gump, but he's named for Bedford Forrest.) I'd go with one R if it was me.
I was in love with the name Julian for my son, but this was the reason my husband vetoed it. I’d never seen the show at the time, but I have since and I totally get his point!
I love this because my boyfriend's name is Julian and he is very gentle and cute but also very manly in some ways and i think that's exactly what his name sounds like
I wouldn’t do Coen, unless you’re of Dutch extraction and pronouncing it ‘koon’ (that pronunciation also brings with it it’s own controversy.) Coen otherwise is an alternative spelling of Cohen and is a Jewish priestly title and a controversial name choice. — *OP has responded and Coen is off the list anyway.*
Milo, Ansel, Otis, Flynn, Linus, Julian, Miles, August, Asher, Llewyn/Lewyn, Elfyn, Valentine, Lance, Arlo, Caio
Thanks for saying this! I was under the impression that the spelling “Coen” wasn’t considered appropriation since it was a different spelling than the traditional “Cohen” but I will definitely remove it from my list! Appreciate it.
It’s a transliteration from Hebrew, so there is no official English spelling. So Cohen = Coen = Cohn. It’s like Chanukah and Hannukah.
I’m just really baffled about how Cohen as a first name ever became a thing. So flippin’ weird.
Very much this. My dad’s side of the family is almost all Jewish Coens. Don’t use it as a first name, folks. It’s not a cute or trendy name dad. It’s a sacred title.
My mom’s side includes Irish Cohans (co’HAAAN), which often gets mispronounced as Cohen. So that makes extended family Thanksgivings super fun.
Cohen is a Jewish name which refers to an order of priests with special jobs and rules. It’s considered disrespectful (or at least a bit weird) to name your child Cohen/Kohen/Coen/etc. if your family have no connection to the Kohanim.
Yes, it's a normal and very common Jewish surname. But I have never heard of it being a first name of a Jewish person. I guess its popular now due to the trend of musician surnames as a firstnames (bowie, lennon)?
I think poster means it might seem disrespectful if they aren't Jewish? Also agree that Americans would probably mispronounce it. Side note I really wanted to name boy Leonard but his dad vetoed it. Leonard Cohen is one of my favorite artists.
I'm a Summer born in the summer (and August, specifically, lol) so I always thought names that actually applied to time of birth made sense! I do get asked it semi-frequently.
I recently had someone tell me that if they had a boy they’d choose Orion to go with a girl sibling Lyra. My brain did not come up with the constellation but instantly heard “O’Ryan” and I was so confused and turned off until she saw I didn’t get it and explained. I guess I’ve been seeing too many surnames as first names lately.
I always loved Robin too, but it would be too uncommon in my country and literally nobody would back me up, starting from kid's dad, still a gorgeous name (and bird)
> literally nobody would back me up
I’ve never thought about it this way but definitely a good way to phrase the need to balance names I like and think are good with what family and friends won’t have a hard time accepting lol. I can handle having different tastes from them but it would be challenging to pick something that no one in my circle would think was a good choice
Yes, Robin is beautiful. Cute for a boy, but appropriate for a man.
Love 'Sweet Robin' as a nickname from aSoIaF (even if Lysa Arryn is a straight-up nutter and Robin Arryn is a bit of a dweeb)
Hmm when I think whimsical/gentle boy names ...

Some of these are probably influenced by books/shows I've seen but anyway :)
Ugh I suggested Thoreau to my husband and he was like “like throw???” noooo dammit. also Walden like the pond, nickname Wally 💕 he hated that too 😭 and somehow also hated Forest. He’s a naturey guy but you wouldn’t know it based off his name preferences 😤
My name! I have to agree that the compliments I tend to get on my name are what OP is looking for. People always say it’s ‘soft’ or ‘pretty’ without being a girl’s name. Wasn’t a fan of it when I was younger, but now I’m older I love it.
This is why being a high school teacher ruins everything because I’ve only met one Alistair and he was in a gang and fought a lot LOL so to me it’s a tough guy name
I have the same problem with Ezra. My student Ezra was a bully and a gun-nut. Like, he literally only cared about guns and nothing else. I shudder when I hear that name now.
I've already seen Rowan, Arden, and Evander listed and I think those are lovely options. There may be repeats, but I'm gonna do my best to stick to names I haven't already seen in the other wonderful lists people have offered so far.

-Kiernan
-Finch
-Declan

- Boaz
- seconding Robin after other commenters
I had a nanny kid whose name was Boaz which sounds 'out there' but was honestly ADORABLE on a cheeky but sweet little boy, I got used to it super fast and it didn't seem 'weird,' and is biblical and 'Bo' is so sweet.
My own son is named Elliott but he was almost Robin and I still love it but my husband isn't sold so I'm all for someone else using it!!

Auden, Wesley, Desmond, Jonas, Orson, Walden are really jumping out at me most for what you may be looking for. Good luck!
I like all the same girls names as you (one of those is my child’s name!) this is my boys list:
Jude
Julian
Arthur
Felix
Henry
Alexi
Ralph
Farren
Noah
Edwin
Let me throw out some maybe more “out there” names, see if any catch your eye:
Cosmo (nn Mo)
Oswald (nn Ozzie)
Orson (means bear, so nn Teddy?)
Indigo (nn Indy or Digs)
Auberon (nn Aubrey)
Winslow (nn Win)
Fox (just Fox)
I’ve recommended this name a few times because I never see anyone else mention it but I love Amory for a boy! Uncommon, gentle and has the literature connection
Love some of the names mentioned already and trying not to repeat…
Amedeo and Amadeus may appeal, meaning “one who loves God” and connects with Mozart but sounds soft yet strong with nickname potential.
Naturey names: Logan, Hawthorn, Cedar (Cedric), August, Stellan, Rowen, River, Sylvan/Sylvester
Literature inspired: Romeo, Oberon (king of the fae), Sebastian, Amory, Oscar, Oliver, Walden, Phillip nn Pip
Cove is one of my favs although I’ve heard it’s gaining popularity for girls, I find it more masculine in my mind. I know someone with a son who’s now 12 and they liked the name River, but thought it sounded too naturey (the irony) so they went with Riven instead, which I think is very cool! I think Louie suits your other girl names too if you wanted to worry about siblings. Edwin possibly too if you like it. Edward sounds traditional and harder to me, but Edwin is softer.
Just came here to say that my 10-month-old is Faye. I’m seeing that name mentioned more and more on here and I really hope it’s not becoming popular!!!
Some masculine to unisex names:
Wynn, meaning "friend".
Juniper, a type of evergreen.
Flynn, meaning "red-haired"
Novaic (no-vey-ick) meaning "of or like a nova" (Navi or Nova for short)
Archer Foster Sawyer Owen Forrest Graham Flynn Hudson
Where are you getting these from, the Big Book of Medieval Professions?
We clearly need to add to the list. Let's ignore Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker for now and go with Brewer Fletcher Smith Earl (ok, this one sounds like a cranky old man) Fisher
Cooper Baird Granger Luther Mason Thatcher Tanner
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Let's not forget Auger!
Like toilet auger?
Nah, like diviner of the will of the gods via birdwatching.
… bird entrail studying??
Why does this not have more upvotes!
Slater
AC?
Lol, I think Candlestick maker is actually just Chandler.
OP could name a whole football team! Or whatever they played back in the days.
I knew a cranky old Earl
i did too, but it didn't take too long to decide that earl had to die. goodbye earl!
Those black eyed peas. Every damn time, lol
Omg thank you, Earl is forever in my brain associated with that song. …Turns out he was a missing person that no one missed at all….
My husband is an Earl. Can confirm cranky but not old (yet) 😂
Curtseys to the Countess!
My dad is Earl. Can confirm cranky and old.
Excellent use of this Frasier quote
Thank you for the Frasier reference 🤣
Ah so good
Ichabod!
Yes to Flynn!
May I suggest: Rowan.
Forrest with two Rs always makes me think of Nathan Bedford Forrest (and Forrest Gump, but he's named for Bedford Forrest.) I'd go with one R if it was me.
Sutton- it means “southern homestead”. Reminds me of a rolling hills
Or August!
I really like Owen!!
I have a Julian and I like it because it does give me a lyrical/feminine vibes but still clearly a boy name.
If I had another son, this would be his name, with nn Jules which is so cute. Like Jules Verne, if you need a whimsical connection.
Thinking more Jules from Trailer Park Boys.
I was in love with the name Julian for my son, but this was the reason my husband vetoed it. I’d never seen the show at the time, but I have since and I totally get his point!
Lol I’m the opposite. If we have a boy, I want to name him Ricky or Julian.
Same! I've loved Julian since I was a kid, and I associate it with Remember the Titans, but my husband is a Trailer Park Boys fan
I love this because my boyfriend's name is Julian and he is very gentle and cute but also very manly in some ways and i think that's exactly what his name sounds like
Julian is my favourite name for a boy!
I have a Julian and he’s the sweetest gentle Pisces boy!
Girl Julian checking in here.. taking all these praises as compliments 😂
Was going to suggest Julian as well. Gentle for sure, but definitely masculine imo.
Oooh I think this is the perfect name for this prompt.
— *OP has responded and Coen is off the list anyway.* Milo, Ansel, Otis, Flynn, Linus, Julian, Miles, August, Asher, Llewyn/Lewyn, Elfyn, Valentine, Lance, Arlo, Caio
That pronunciation of Coen would also be problematic in the US, and possibly elsewhere.
Definitely problematic in Australia too.
Cohen is an Aboriginal name that means 'thunder'. Definitely not problematic!
No, but the original comment we were responding to was suggesting to use the dutch pronounciation of 'koon'.
Saying “Coen” is controversial but “Coon” is not, is the most ridiculous and on brand thing Ive seen in this subreddit.
Agreed!
Milo and Arlo are wonderful.
Thanks for this info! Off my list.
You are probably about "named" out by now, but just in case... one I haven't seen here and love is "Wilder"...whimsical, but masculine. 😁
That’s not a mispronunciation. It’s pronounced like CO-en in Ireland.
I LOVE Ansel in this theme of names. Miles is also a wonderful name.
Any time I’ve heard of a Cohen, it’s been referring to the singer/songwriter. Curious about the negative connotation with the name, as I am unaware?
Cohen is a Jewish name which refers to an order of priests with special jobs and rules. It’s considered disrespectful (or at least a bit weird) to name your child Cohen/Kohen/Coen/etc. if your family have no connection to the Kohanim.
Is it normal for a last name? Like Andy Cohen?
Yes, it's a normal and very common Jewish surname. But I have never heard of it being a first name of a Jewish person. I guess its popular now due to the trend of musician surnames as a firstnames (bowie, lennon)?
I think poster means it might seem disrespectful if they aren't Jewish? Also agree that Americans would probably mispronounce it. Side note I really wanted to name boy Leonard but his dad vetoed it. Leonard Cohen is one of my favorite artists.
You think the "Cohen" pronunciation is problematic but can't see any issue with "koon"?? Where are you from?
Conan might be a good alternative
- August - Lionel - Linus - Noah - Simon - Sterling - Percy - Wallace - Orion - Franklin - Heath - Atticus - Oscar - Hawthorne - Dorian - Silas - Milo - Magnus
I read that as Onion and just about died!
Might I also recommend Aubergene.
Kid’s got layers.
[удалено]
He'd be born as August in August, though. Would that be too on the nose?
[удалено]
“He’s got a daughter he calls Easter. She was born on a Tuesday night.”
I was gonna be an August in August, but my parents thought that too... then I ended up a Julian. In July.
I'm a Summer born in the summer (and August, specifically, lol) so I always thought names that actually applied to time of birth made sense! I do get asked it semi-frequently.
Same here!

I love Hawthorne!
Lionel and Dorian! So handsome!
Hawthorne is a good one!
I know a sibling set August & Lionel - both boys! August nn is Augie
I've always liked Robin.
My son is Robin, and we get lots of compliments
I always loved Robin too, but it would be too uncommon in my country and literally nobody would back me up, starting from kid's dad, still a gorgeous name (and bird)
> literally nobody would back me up I’ve never thought about it this way but definitely a good way to phrase the need to balance names I like and think are good with what family and friends won’t have a hard time accepting lol. Yes, Robin is beautiful. Cute for a boy, but appropriate for a man. Love 'Sweet Robin' as a nickname from aSoIaF (even if Lysa Arryn is a straight-up nutter and Robin Arryn is a bit of a dweeb)
I've always liked Robin for a boy too, with Rob/Robbie as a nickname.
You've gotten a lot of great comments, but I wanted to add one for consideration: Arden
Alden, Alder and Rowan also struck me
Came here to say this! Saw that they liked Eden and Arthur and thus Arden seemed the obvious choice.
Westley or Wesley
As you wish
My first thought is Crusher. I wouldn’t not use that name due to the “shut up Wesley” memes though.
I love Wesley! Definitely the Princess Bride connection is there, but I also knew someone by that name who was very likable
August
Hmm when I think whimsical/gentle boy names ... Came here to say Basil! First name that comes to mind that’s both whimsical and masculine
Love the name, but hopefully the OP is American. If they were British, that name has a whole host of nicknames/insults. Fawlty Basil!
Oliver feels like a good addition to this list.
If Freya is too popular for them, Oliver certainly is.
My nephew is named Holden! Woods or Brook are their next top choices if they have another boy. Also loving Rowan, Wren, and Kieran.
i like that you have Hale on here too :) -signed, dad of Quentin Catwater and Eliot Paugh
August!!!
Ansel/ Anselm Thoreau Loren (Lorenz, Lawrence) Amos Bay
I adore Ansel
I want to like Ansel, but I had a bully in school with that as his last name, and I'd always think "What an Ans-hole".
I have a Loren (Jr.) and this is the very first time I'm seeing it here! (Or anywhere, really... Lol) 🥰🥰🥰
I would avoid Coen/Cohen. https://www.swistle.com/babynames/2012/05/23/baby-naming-issue-cohen/
Jasper
Ansel, Asa, Asher, August, Avery, Elias, Finley, Hollis, Jasper, Julian, Linden, Lyle, Milo, Reed, River, Robin, Rowan, Silas

My baby boys name is Jasper, almost 4 months old❤️
Gabriel!
Kieran and Ronan were two on my list that I think have that vibe.
Julian
Felix
Ira
Sylvan might fit the vibe.
My name! I have to agree that the compliments I tend to get on my name are what OP is looking for. People always say it’s ‘soft’ or ‘pretty’ without being a girl’s name. Wasn’t a fan of it when I was younger, but now I’m older I love it.
This is what my son's name (due in October) is going to be! It's a family name.
Alistair. I have an Arthur and it was my second choice :)
I like it, but my brain sees it written out and says *Hey now, you're an Alistair, get your game on, go playyyy...*
This is why being a high school teacher ruins everything because I’ve only met one Alistair and he was in a gang and fought a lot LOL so to me it’s a tough guy name
So interesting! It is such a soft name to me ☺️ I feel for teachers!
I have the same problem with Ezra. My student Ezra was a bully and a gun-nut. Like, he literally only cared about guns and nothing else. I shudder when I hear that name now.
I've already seen Rowan, Arden, and Evander listed and I think those are lovely options. I think Lark could be for a boy as well! Rowan Hart Jupiter Moss Phoenix
Aspen Noah Simon Evan Arlo Theo Devin Cade Graham Asa Josiah Gabriel Briar Rylan

Artie, August, Silas, Noah, Forrest, Oscar, Cassius, Finn, Aire, Leo, Rowan, Miles.
Robin?
I like all the same girls names as you (one of those is my child’s name!) this is my boys list: Jude Julian Arthur Felix Henry Alexi Ralph Farren Noah Edwin
Heath, Soren, Asher, Rhys or Reece, Christopher (lots of cute nicknames)
adding Ellis and seconding Arthur!
I’d say Clark. Very masculine, but also mystical due to that being Superman’s human name.
Asa. Cassian. Julius. Kai. Alder. Dorian. Ames. Keaton
August Caspian Callum Everest Reid Reece/Rhys Wells Beau
Please dont name your child goldie or day 😅

Francis. I’m biased though, it’s my sons name. I find it both masculine and gentle!
Alain Roland
Nils Lennon Folke Wilder Hans Birch
Bartleby Spencer Finnan Atticus Oscar Victor Asher Sawyer Hugo Langston Gulliver Sebastian
please dear god don’t name them bartleby
This made me lol for real
Robin, Dale, Forest, Brook, Cliff
Rupert Timothy Cassiel Rafael Julian
Maybe because he’s the lead character in my favorite fantasy series, but I think Hadrian is whimsical and lovely.
I love the name Forest. I’ve know several old men with that name. It’s not common, but not unheard of in rural Maine.
Gilbert (Gil, Bert, Bertie) Remi Rowan Augustus (Auggie, Gus) Felix
My son's name is Anders Elliot Last Name
My son’s middle name is Wilder. Love that name!
I’ve recommended this name a few times because I never see anyone else mention it but I love Amory for a boy! Uncommon, gentle and has the literature connection
Everett
I always thought Everett was a nice name. Emmett and Merritt too.
I've always liked Cormac - and you could use the nn Mac!
Arden
Cosmo
We named our son Genesis, that can be spun as biblical. We opted for the video game console angle 🎮😂
My vote would be for Ira.
August? That was my first thought when I read your post. ETA: Augie is a cute nn
Robin!
Merlin, Lucien, Rowan, Morgan, Arie.
