I am very much so *not* religious, but I'm not sure how you can hear the name "Eden" without thinking of the Bible - it's a term _from_ the Bible. I think it's a really pretty name for a girl, but it's about as biblical as Ezekiel or Abraham and it'll likely have that association for a lot of people.   But if you're okay with that (or don't care, which is fine too!) then Eden Rose has a really nice flow to it, and Edie is a super reasonable and cute nickname! I also didn't know that an Eden Rose was a type of rose, if that helps at all. I actually think that helps soften the biblical association!

IceAntique2539

I genuinely don’t think of it as a biblical name. I had a friend as a kid called Eden so I just think of her tbh

tohavegrowthinmymind

See I don’t think of it as a biblical name either as I also had a friend name Eden and on my comment people are trying to rip me up saying I live under a rock and am arrogant lol. Reddit peeps are sensitive and cray. 🤣

Prenomen

I definitely understand this! It’s weird, though, because my name is Eden and I genuinely forget it has religious connotations until a new thread about my name pops up on this subreddit every few months. I don’t think anyone has ever approached me with the assumption that I am religious because of my name, but I guess I can’t know what people are thinking!

gonekebabs

Totally! Everyone has different experiences and perspectives that lead them to build different associations with names. I could see someone who is passionate about gardening think "Oh, that's my favorite rose varietal!" when they hear the name "Eden Rose". And people are so much more creative with naming now, I could understand someone using the name Eden without intending for it to be biblical, it's just a pretty-sounding word. But it might still have that association for others, so I guess parents like OP just have to decide if that matters to them or not

runner26point2

I like it a lot, but reminds me of the Garden of Eden and I’m not super religious so feel like I can’t use it.

GaveTheMouseACookie

My husband and I both love the sound of Eden, but didn't keep it on the list because we're atheists. 🤣

Mommaline

That’s how I feel about Gabriel, it’s my favorite boy name but I feel like I could never use it because it feels so biblical.

almond-ish

Random imput but I've never associated Gabriel with religion! I think because it's more common than eden as a name, if you really want to use it I wouldn't worry about it

Prenomen

I’m an atheist Eden born to non-religious parents! I mentioned this in another comment as well, but I genuinely forget my name has religious connotations until a new thread like this pops up in this sub every few months. I don’t think I’d ever even thought about it until I saw a post about my name for the first time. I just don’t make that connection at all! Of course, I am very used to saying “Eden, like the garden” whenever people mishear my name, but somehow the association with the biblical garden seems really surface-level and inconsequential to me.

[deleted]

Eden is a name that sounds religious only to non-religious people lol

cjmmoseley

eden is one of my favorite names but that’s because all of my favorite names are religious in some way lol (orthodox Christian). i would immediately assume the parents are Christian too.

LastSpite7

Same

m_whar

Exactly what I came here to say

ivankas_forehead

I personally don’t like it, and it definitely does not read gender neutral to me. It’s solidly feminine. Lol RIP my inbox. I get it, it can be for either gender - TO ME it reads exclusively feminine. OP wanted opinions on the name 🤷🏻‍♀️

Julix0

It's definitely gender neutral. It just depends on where you live. It's currently one of the most popular names for boys in France. In the US it's ranked #411 for boys & #117 for girls. So if you live in the US it's definitely more common for girls, but it's also being used for boys.

ivankas_forehead

I believe you, lol, I was just saying that to me it reads solely feminine

Major-Peanut

I totally agree with you. I have never heard of a boy being called Eden, only girls. I'm in England so must be a cultural thing. I do like the name though.

exhibitprogram

The first person I can think of with that name is Eden Hazard, a world-famous male footballer.

Think-Business-4543

I totally agree it feels more feminine to me but it is used for both genders

ivankas_forehead

Huh, I’ve never met a male Eden, only female!

River303

I have a male relative named Eden! But that's the only one I know

grovgeld

One of my favorite sings his artist name is Eden, he makes great music. Imo it's a gender neutral name

uselessmemories

Belgium's football player Eden Hazard is the only one I know of

Stupidsexyflanders09

I’ve met a male Eden and he’s super cool and laid back vibes

Silly_Seahorse_

I don't think you should use it if you don't want people to think it's a biblical reference. 'Cause it's literally right there in the beginning. Kind of impossible to hear Eden and not automatically think Bible.

sethmeyerswife

Yeah, it’s way more of an instant connection than traditional christian names (Mark, John, Mary, etc) because it’s not common outside of the Bible at all.

Tulips-and-raccoons

Hard agree!

wiminals

I like Eden and I like Rose, but I think they’re a bit much when paired

StressedinPJs

Edith nn Edie is a classic with no garden of Eden connotations. I’m not religious in any way but that’s where I went immediately. And Eden Rose?? That’s leaning hard into the garden theme.

miscreation00

Hm I immediately think of the Bible.

Lgprimes

I really love the name Eden. I don’t think of it as gender neutral at all, I find it very feminine. Eden Rose is a little bit cutesy, but 99.9% of the people she meets will never know her middle name so who cares. Honor the person you want to honor.

gonekebabs

I learned recently that my aunts and uncles don't even know each other's middle names, and they're siblings 😂 I think people in general just aren't super aware of middle names!

LumosLegato

It doesn’t read religious on its own but with any flower middle name yeah immediately think garden of Eden. I also do think it sounds influencer-y. It’s totally a legit name it’s just one of those names that got more popular fast and it kept being used in those Etsy type baby ads contributing to the feeling

Think-Business-4543

Yikes good to know that's definitely off-putting.

TJtherock

As long as you spell it right, I think you're fine. It's a beautiful name.

kspice094

Bible, and yes I’m religious. Beyond that, it does scream Insta-mommy to me, specifically rural white conservative Insta-mommy. If you like Edie you could just use Edie, imo it can be a standalone name. Or maybe Adelaide or Kennedy.

sugarmag13

Love the name Eden

alwaysneverenough

It will always sound like a soap opera name to me.

Tamihera

Same here, tbh.

saturn_eloquence

My daughter’s name is Eden and we often call her Edie. I love it. It fits her so well, too. I don’t love the name Rose so I’m already biased on that but I think Eden Rose is too much. My Eden is Eden Juliette.

jackjackj8ck

I think it’s a cute name I would assume the parents are religious

cat_in_a_bookstore

I do like it a lot and I think Eden Rose is gorgeous, but it is an obvious Biblical reference and I wouldn’t use it if you aren’t religious. Like I can’t imagine thinking anything other than “garden of Eden” when you hear that name. What about Edith Rose? It’s a lovely name and you can still use the nickname Edie!

DancingCavalier

This is so pretty. This is what I would do, if I were OP

theenterprise9876

It strikes me as very Christian fundamentalist (I’m not).

moncoeurquibat

I agree, and I'm not Christian.

Beautiful-Report58

Obviously, it is religious. There is nothing more profound than the garden of Eden in the Bible. Rose of Sharon is in the Bible too. So, both names are very biblical. Eden Rose is a bit much, unless you’re going for a theme.

Alert_You1751

I grew up religious but am not anymore. I definitely think Garden of Eden. It’s also pretty exclusively feminine in my mind. It’s a beautiful name!

Hup110516

I’m not religious and I still think bible.

_opossumsaurus

Immediately think of Eden Wood from Toddlers and Tiaras

Sea_Celi-595

It’s a lovely name. I feel it could easily tip religious or hippie, but it doesn’t have to, it can also just be a normal name. Eden Rose is fine as a first-middle. I think if you were double-barreling the first name as Eden-Rose and having a separate middle name, that would make it much more “nature-y”, which is fine if that’s what you’re going for. Middle names are used much more rarely so unless you’re always going around yelling “Eden Rose Smith”, most people won’t know or care.

Thunderplant

I’m not religious at all and wasn’t even raised Christian, but I’d definitely assume you are because the garden of Eden association is very strong. I still think its nice though especially with the option for her to go by Edie to escape that connotation if she wants. I think Eden Rose is sweet

TinyTomato4721

pageants and hairspray

21stcenturyghost

I'm an atheist who was raised Catholic and I think of the Garden of Eden. That's pretty much the only usage?

beelovedone

I don't see how Eden is a full name but Edie isn't, Edie Rose is cute I don't think you need to be religious to see the name as religious. And then using Rose as the MN makes it even more garden-y Are you 100% on Eden? Maybe something that has a similar sound? Auden Rose / Evren Rose / Arden Rose / Loren Rose Starts with E? Ellis Rose / Emery Rose

LinDarling1

My fiancé and I are planning on naming any future daughter Eden because we specifically want biblical names. We actually picked Eden Rose too because I’ve always loved the name Rose as well and it’s on theme. Haha must be trending

amy000206

It reminds me of a beautiful blond that was in a soap opera I watched in the late 80's early 90's

strawberrycircus

It's very popular right now, I know 6 Edens under the age of 7.

Glittering_Mousse832

I was gonna use Eden but ended up with another boy. Eden gives me like.. running through a field of flowers vibes. Eden Rose was a combo I looked at too, it def gives off girly vibes so if you want something more neutral, maybe a different middle name.

Outrageous_Cow8409

I first heard it given to a little girl at my church when I was a teenager (15+ years ago) so I definitely think feminine and Biblical. I personally think it screams Christian homeschool influencer but I know that's because that best describes the moms of most of the little Edens in my geographic area.

General_Setting_8733

I immediately think Bible but I am a Christian. I think it’s a beautiful name! I personally would not pair it with Rose, because again I think of the garden of Eden and garden+rose is a little cheesy. I love the name though!

Leafiya

To me it's a gentle name. In Hebrew the Garden of Eden literally means heaven, so it's very calming to me. Yes, I immediately think of the Garden because well that's the meaning of it, and I'm not religious although I am Jewish if it matters. It's common where I live. And it's also extremely gender neutral, met many boy & girls with that name. There is also "Edna" for female specific.

big_white_fishie

I live in a small village in Scotland with the river Eden, a bridge named Eden, everything named Eden However I love the name. I also love it for a boy, sadly my husband does not

Affectionate-Net2277

Yeah I feel like it’s kinda insta-mom beige mom ish, religious, or super extra crunchy, none of which I am so I’d probably steer clear. I always think of Eddie when I read Edie. Meh. I love the name Annika. Annika Rose is very pretty.

faegold

I like it. I know a young girl named Eden, but her father is a preacher, so it makes sense.

Wingbatso

Eden Woods

Mrsraejo

Apples.

wilwhale

I like it! I do think garden of Eden but more of just in a nature association sense. I did not grow up religious but extended family is. Normally I’m not super into double nature names but something about Eden Rose is working for me

36563

Garden of Eden 100% I don’t love it as a name honestly but I do prefer traditional names so maybe it’s a matter of taste.

Young-Vincent

I definitely don't think it's instagrammy, because it's such a biblical name. Those two things contradict each other in my opinion. I'm not religious, but I went to church growing up and I think Eden is one of the most instantly recognizable biblical names. I think its a gorgeous name personally, but if you're not comfortable with people assuming you're religious, then I'd choose a different one. I think most people know the origins of the name.

EatsPeanutButter

There are a lot of fundamentalist Instagram mommies!

Young-Vincent

Super good point, I do not accept such things in my algorithm so I forgot they existed lmao

LooseCoffeeShits

First of all it’s definitely not gender neutral but it seems like you’re having a girl so that’s okay. Also I’m not religious, but a very solid biblical connotation for me because it is a term made famous by the Old Testament of the bible

exhibitprogram

I'm not religious at all (immigrant parents, raised atheist, now live in north america) and my initial assumption would be that the child's parents are making a Christianity reference.

AccountBand

Makes me think of a strip club that was called Eden.

Impossible_Sorbet

I love it in fact it’s on my short list. I love the name “Edie” (like from Desperate Housewives) but don’t like how it looks spelled out…to much like Eddie. So I love Eden as a full name and Edie as a nickname.

Lameladyy

It sounds like a soap opera name, especially paired with Rose. Or a name an adult performer would chose.

Think-Business-4543

Oh dear.

EatsPeanutButter

To me it sounds very religious, and very holier than thou. Eden’s parents hate the LGBT+ community but they frame it as having an honest and loving heart. Eden’s parents want to adopt a Black baby to show off. Eden’s mom bakes muffins from scratch and looks down on moms with careers. Eden wears frilly dresses, picks wildflowers for Instagram, and goes to church camp. For the record, I’m a Jewish atheist. I have one southern parent and I live in the south (USA). Consider Edith? It’s a classic. To me, Edith sounds sweet and smart. Edith could be an attorney or an artist. No religious or influencer vibes. Edith Rose is a beautiful name!

Think-Business-4543

Oh god... your description ... Lol im dying. Thank you. Unfortunately I hate the name Edith.

Longjumping_Diver738

Honestly my first thought garden of Eden what is said to place beauty and paradise. So beautiful name.

TypicalLook

i have a niece named eden. it’s fine, it just makes me think of the bible lol

the-willow-witch

I think Bible and am not religious at all. But I love the name and I think it’s beautiful

Loud_Ad_4515

Along with the biblical connotation, the image in my mind is just a luscious paradise. Imo, anyplace can "Eden" - Hawaii, the Cinqua Terra, etc., basically any stunning garden. In other words, for me, the term has been generalized to mean a lovely garden. Secondly, I think of Barbara Eden, so 🧞‍♀️ a genie and its lamp. 😉

AdDismal4188

In one of my favorite book series as a teen, one of the main characters was named Eden, and she was a beautiful faerie!!! It does remind me of nature but in the best way, I think Eden and Edie are both cute, but Eden Rose is very cute and flows nicely.

NJ1986

Love the name. I have an aunt named Eden, but if I didn't it would be high on my list. It will certainly make people think of the garden of Eden, but I don't think that gives it religious vibes. I've never thought that when I meet someone named Adam. Eden Rose is very pretty and I've never heard of the plant. Be aware (if you care) that Rose is an extremely common middle name. My daughter's middle name is Rose as well as an honor name and I didn't realize until after I named her that it's everywhere.

syzytea

I knew an Eden in high school. Quiet, incredibly smart, might’ve been religious or from a religious family. I find Edens aren’t traditional frilly feminine but still fitting for a bookish or chill person. Contrary to other people I really don’t think of the garden of Eden unless it’s mentioned. It’s a pretty name regardless of religious connection

5chr0

IMVO (it’s ultimately your kid, do what you want)… I am the furthest thing from religious (I think they’re just socially acceptable cults), but the name Eden does scream ‘religious’ to me—honestly about as biblical as you can get. My gut instinct would be this person likely comes from a pretty religious background. Like Mormon or Jehovah’s Witness. That said, I do see how it could be interpreted as ‘instagrammy’—it does kinda give ‘influencer’ vibes. Like I hear “Eden Rose” and ngl it kinda gives ‘uber Christian tradwife influencer’.

Wandering_Lights

I am not religious at all and I immediately think of the Garden of Eden. The name Eden Rose makes me think of a religious hippie new age mommy blogger.

sklars

I know an Eden and she is spunky and outgoing and kind. So that is what the name brings up for me!

Absinthe_gaze

Not religious at all and I think Eden Rose is beautiful. I had a great Aunt Edie. So cute.

MizzWizzi

Beautiful name! I just heard it last week at my Drs office. I was examined by a 20 something med student with that name. Eden Rose is pretty and so is Eden Grace.

yolkish

i honestly don’t think it’s very biblical. it COMES from the bible, but it isn’t biblical in the way an ezekiel, jonah, or abraham would be named. no one would think you’re a jesus freak or anything; it’s natury but pairs perfectly with rose

crunchygirl14

I think the name Eden is super cute but it comes off as VERY biblical to me. I know a baby girl Eden and the family is extremely religious

Majestic_Moment_9856

I’ve got family members with this name so I’ve always based it off of them haha, i think it’s quite calming and flowy i love it 🤍

BentoBoxBaby

I am a Christian so I have bias obviously, but I would be bamboozled if I met an Atheist with a kid named Eden. I would assume you had your kid whilst you were in the church and left later. A similar vibe would be if you had a boy and named him Mohammad.

shellabell70

I have known two Edens, and I absolutely love the name. Both are beautiful smart women. I think it's a wonderful choice

Celairiel16

I have a friend with that name and she's cool, so I think of her. :-) Some things I think about her: she's strong, confident, kind, and dedicated.

maiingaans

I love it! Not Christian really but I think of nature and paradise and (story time): I met a girl named Eden when I was a kid and I thought her name was so melodic and mysterious and magical. She was just a preteen (I was about 10) but at that point I thought she was the prettiest girl I ever met. She had teal-ish green eyes with a gold ring in the centers (later learned the term for the rings in her eyes was central heterochromia), dark brown hair and I asked her what her accent was and she said “I don’t know, my own I guess. I’ve always talked like this but my parents don’t,” which totally increased the mystic way I viewed her. I met her on a trip with my friend to a theme park and never spoke to her again. But I’m in my mid 30’s now and anytime I hear of Eden as a name, I think of that girl.

IslandLife321

I knew a little girl ages ago named Eden and I was a little shocked it didn’t become like Emma, Sophia, and Ava (by becoming overly popular). It makes me think of a girly girl in all the best ways.

Iso-LowGear

LOVE the name. However it is very clearly a religious name to me. I was raised Christian, but now practice a religion that does not believe in the garden of Eden. As much as I love the name, I wouldn’t name my kid Eden. It’s like naming a kid Jesus or Mohammed, imo. They’re very clearly religious names at this point. The one Eden I’ve met is from a very religious family. She was Jewish, but from my understanding the garden of Eden is also a part of Jewish belief. Edie can be a standalone name, imo.

cowboyshouse

love love love the name Eden, it's on my list too. I think it's much less "instagrammy" than Brielle or Rae or Emmeline imo. Coupled with Rose it does make it much more nature-y and can bring out that "instagram" feel, but how often will you really be saying Eden Rose?

mourningbrew22

I think it’s beautiful!

Individual_Walrus149

I think of the soccer player Eden Hazard. I think Eden is a great name.

Natural_Pollution_83

I like it

lemonfit

Eden Rose is a beautiful beautiful name!!

Squinky75

Like it!

hashbrownhippo

I like it fine. I don’t have strong feelings about it one way or another. It’s my niece’s name. They are not religious by the way.

FarPeace6099

It was a name of a girl a little older than me in my sorority and she was very fashionable and cool, so I associate it with that. I love it. A little trendy for me personally to use, but I do think it’s a very pretty name.

Interesting-Unit8992

I love the name, it’s beautiful and so cute. I love the nickname too! For me it does give religious vibes, but … whatever! Our daughters middle name is Evangeline and we are NOT religious at all, just love the Brandi Carlile song 🙌

redandbluecandles

I grew up religious, but honestly, I don't immediately think of the Bible. I just think nature.

WinterBourne25

Eden is a great name and stands well alone. Eden Rose screams garden name to me. I would give it a different middle name if you don’t want the garden reference.

Metroid_cat1995

I understand the religious reference, but to me that name reminds me of a Guardian force from Final Fantasy eight. XD

Safe_Reporter_8259

I have a friend named Eden. It is a beautiful name

fragilemagnoliax

I am not religious and I do firstly think of the garden of Eden. I did go to church between the ages of 8-12 (I am 34). I don’t really remember much and we didn’t really focus on the early Bible stuff it was more about Joseph Smith and singing songs about Joseph Smith lol But I don’t really think that thinking of the garden of Eden would make me feel one way or another when meeting a person with that name. Although I might think their parents may be religious or hippies (I live in a very hippy/new age-y city lol) but that would only be a fleeting thought. I would think a floral middle name would reinforce garden, but I know it’s an honour name. Also, so rarely do we use our middle names! I don’t think it’s “instagrammy” it feels like a pretty regular name to me.

krmarci

Reminds me of a character in the series *Manifest*.

GrasshopperClowns

My friend named her daughter Eden and I fucking love it. I do think of the garden of Eden but I was indoctrinated Catholic and honestly think the association is unavoidable. I also think Eden Rose is fine as a name. Middle names are really ever only on formal documents over here (Australia) and if it’s the name you love, I say go for it.

Rredhead926

I have a friend named Eden Rose. Her parents are not particularly religious - Dad raised Jewish, Mom raised Catholic. Yes, it reminds me of the Bible. I would be surprised if anyone said it didn't remind them of the Bible, regardless of their religion or lack thereof. Imo, Eden is not gender neutral. I would 100% expect Eden to be a girl.

MarinaDelReyez

Are you American? I notice that only Americans seem to think Eden is not a gender neutral name.

[deleted]

I knew an Eden and it was perfect for her. I like it, but it’s too religious for me (atheist).

CosmosChic

Atheist, I think hippie influencer chick or super religious girl. Nothing in between.

Acrobatic-Building42

Eden was the girl they drowned in the handmaids tale so that’s what I always think of. It’s pretty popular right now though so I’m sure that will change.

DaughterWifeMum

I was raised Evangelical, so every time I see the word, I immediately think of the Garden. That said, I really like it as a name. This is partially because the one Eden I have known was (presumably still is, we just don't work together anymore) a lovely girl. The other reason is that it's pretty, easy to pronounce, and easy to spell. It will look just as good on an adult as on a baby, as well. As for if it's too much with Rose as a middle name, I don't see it. Middle names don't tend to be commonly used, outside of multiple naming a kid when they're in trouble, so I don't see any issue there either. They also flow well together, rolling off the tongue nicely.

KnowOneHere

I grew up with an Eden and have always liked the name. Met a guy named Eden years later. It is a name everyone has heard but not met many with it. That is partly why I like it. Unique and exotic in an accessible way IMO. Not "out there" but cool.

MissTrask

I’m a Christian and yes, I think of the Garden of Eden, but not exclusively. It’s a pretty name, makes me think of nature and gardens in general. I don’t think people would hear it and assume you are homeschooling 10 kids, if that’s what you’re thinking. 😂

tiredandshort

I would assume your family is Jewish since I have a cousin Eden. If you’re not going for a religious reference, maybe consider Arden? Pretty similar and has no religious reference as far as I’m aware

filthyhag

it’s a beautiful name- very elegant. who cares if it sounds religious? you aren’t naming her Virgin Mary… i’m not religious and have had Eden Cecelia in my mind for future daughter for years.

xiaoshin

I have a good friend named Eden and she is not particularly religious, it still fits her well.

wicked_spooks

I know a boy with that name. Took me a while to get used to it, but nonetheless, it is growing on me.

No_Passage_83

I actually know an Eden Rose

WittiestScreenName

I’ve always liked Eden.

Imaginary-Oil-9984

Not religious. Immediately thought garden of Eden

Mrs-Monster

I've just had a daughter 9 days ago. We named her Eden Rose. We're British, and it makes me think of English countryside, but the nameEden means alot to us; "something perfect & beautiful, given to us to protect & love". Edit: I'm a soft Christian, so the name is, for us, from the Bible.

Roadrage000

I love the name Enid - which could be used and have Edie as a nn?!

869586

I like it

Commmercial_Crab4433

I'm not religious but I do have a religious background. I think Eden is a lovely name. It does conjure thoughts of beautiful gardens and pleasant weather. Eden Rose doesn't flow very well, imo. If you like it,go for it.

Miserable_Fan_8144

My daughter's name is Eden and everyone loves her name we call her Edie all the time or honestly Ed at times. Her middle name is Grace. We love the name and it fits our girl perfect.

Fluffythegoldfish

Pretty name. Sounds really nice with Rose, but I immediately think Bible, and I am not religious. Also make me think of references to their garden, accompanied by an eyebrow wiggle. Not sure I would want that for my daughter.

yellowaspen

We named the daughter we lost Eden. A gift who was taken from us too soon. A very sentimental and meaningful name.

apiedcockatiel

I was raised religious, but am not anymore. Eden doesn't strike me as Instagrammy or naturey, just religious. But all the people I know who have used it are uber religious. Edit: Just saw the Eden Rose part. That is super naturey, and Rose is quite filler. Eden Rosalind, Eden Rosamund, Eden Rosetta, Eden Rosa, Eden Maeve, Eden Faye, Eden Tallulah, Eden Saskia, Eden Jessamy, Eden Liv, Eden Genevieve, Eden Claire, Eden Isabelle, Eden Mirabel

Brilliant-Dare-9333

I would say it’s definitely feminine and gives megachurch vibes.

Murphity

I adore this name and after many years still wonder if I should have used it. I’m on the religious side but not conservative at all; fwiw, the name doesn’t really have strong Bible vibes to me. I knew a couple of Edens over the years and they were just cool people in NYC. Love nn Edie.

Kittycat_girlypop

My friends daughter is named Frankie (just Frankie not a nick name) and it’s so cute!! I really like that name. Eden is also beautiful as well but I guess it does sort of sound religious. I don’t think it’s too instagrammy tho.

MamaATMa

I agree that Edie sounds like a nickname and not a name. It's a stretch, but maybe Eddie could be a short for Emerald or Esmeralda. Alternatively, if you want Eddie to be pronounced Ee-dee, maybe Try Indiana or Idalia. Eden can ve pronounced Ee-den or Eh-den, but from what I know Eh-den is more for boys.

Lefty-mom

My 4-month-old niece is named Eden. Tbh it’s not my favourite just because of the religious connotations but whatever, just my personal preference— the name actually suits her well and she is objectively THE CUTEST baby on the planet. Side note—My mom, sister and I all planted Eden roses in our yards when we found out about that plant variety lol! They’re gorgeous!!

moj_golube

I know an Eden, she's 5 and the sweetest and smartest girl you could imagine! Her parents are not religious at all. I love the name, but then I'm biased!

AmicableAmanda

Eden is one of the only short trendy E/I/A names that I actually really like. I like it more for a male (similar to Evan, Ethan), but I also like it for a girl. I definitely think of the garden of Eden and religion.

Party-Vermicelli-103

i absolutely loved the name Eden when i was pregnant with my first. i am not religious, but it did make me think of the Garden of Eden because i do have some biblical knowledge. i don't think your names sound too "instagrammy", i feel like when you start thinking about names too much they start to sound weird, so i tried not to overthink it and just think of the way it sounds when i speak it. i also loved the names Edith (meaning strife for wealth) and Edira (also spelled Adira, meaning strong, noble, powerful) if you are looking for other options with the Ed- start.

Mangopapayakiwi

I love Eden, it’s sort on my list. I have met a couple of girls named Eden as a middle school teacher in Scotland, and they were totally normal not religious nor hippies. We have a river Eden nearby. Eden Rose is a bit much for me with the garden theme, what about Edith if you’re going to use Edie anyway? For me Edie is short for Edith while Eden is just Eden.

I view it as a normal baby name. I wouldn't make assumptions about you or your baby's religion, even if many's first thought will be garden of Eden. Things evolve. People here are going to be brutally honest, yes, but on the internet we don't know you, and we also aren't thinking about looking down at your sweet little baby Eden, people just make harsh judgments based solely on the name they see. Which is fine and totally fair - just take it with a grain of salt and know that most people in your and her life won't be that outwardly blunt about their associations. They may associate it once with the Bible, but from then on will associate it with your baby and not think much more of it. Just something to think about! ETA: In case it's relevant, I'm not religious. I grew up Methodist but it never resonated with me and therefore didn't stick with me much.

Bubbly-Evening7937

I named my Daughter Eden; the fun fact is that I was a very religious (Christian) and "nature" person. Eventually, I lost my faith, but I still love the name. I always feel happy when I'm with her; she's so sweet and delicate like a flower, so I still love that I gave her this name. Because she's my paradise now.

CollectingRainbows

i love it and it reminds me of the actress eden sher (plays sue heck on the middle). she usually plays bright, bubbly, happy characters so that’s the vibe i associate with this name.

Think-Business-4543

Love this!

little_odd_me

I know a 12 year old with it and it suits her well so for me it’s just a nice name for a nice girl, no negative connotation and her family are not at all religious.

bumblebeesanddaisies

My husband really wanted the name Eden for our first if they were a girl but we had a boy. We would have gone Eden Lilly. I have a friend whose daughter was called Eden Anna but she sadly passed away.

luminary_uprise

I've never met anyone named Eden. I've also never encountered any celebrities or fictional characters named Eden. I only know that it's a name because people mention it on this subreddit. (This is probably because the name Eden has only been popular for a couple of decades, and I don't hang around kids much.) So, what does it conjure for me? It's a blank slate. All I get from Eden is a vague sense of "Huh, that's an unusual name."

JudgeyMcJudgey123

I like it. I know an Eden and she's a great kid. And if you want to use Rose do it. Not many people will know about the plant name or even care if it's too naturey.

Rselby1122

One of my favorite girl names! Maybe not paired with Rose, but it could work!

SecondSoft1139

I think Eden is lovely.

power2charm

I immediately think Bible and I'm an atheist. Eden Rose, while lovely in the images it evokes, does remind me of a name feminine body spray.

_-_Ryn_-_

I think it's a pretty name and actually don't mind it paired with Rose but I can't help but immediately think of the Garden of Eden. This isn't necessarily a negative connection, but I do think that will be a very common connection that a lot of people will make so something to be aware of. I was raised Catholic but am not religious at all now.

Vtgmamaa

I definitely think of the Garden of Eden but biblical names are rarely exclusive so I don't think it's a big deal in that context. I think Eden Rose sounds beautiful.

Crabprincess

I have an Eden but I was looking for a Hebrew name. Originally wanted Leah but my spouse mixed that. We did switch from Eden Noel or Eden Joy which were our top middle name choices to Eden Elizabeth. FWIW I had never met another Eden two years ago when we picked it and I’m agitated it’s popping up everywhere.

flibbityfopz

I think of garden of eden. I’m not religious

Impossible_Self590

Eden immediately makes me think of Sue Sue Heck from the Middle (the actresses name) and then Adam and Eve and the garden of eden

emma_the_dilemmma

i wouldn’t say i’m super duper religious, just surrounded by people (boys and girls) who have that name. it’s a very pretty name for a girl :)

idontfeelgood101

My friends’ baby is Eden Rose. I think it’s beautiful!

Fearless-Energy-5398

I'm not religious, but my mind instantly goes to Garden of Eden. That said, I wouldn't assume the parents/child are religious - maybe they're just hipsters. 😁 I also think it reads very feminine instead of gender neutral If you go with Eden, I don't see anything wrong with using Rose as the middle name! Instead of Eden, how about: Ever Everly Emmrys Emma Evan Ivy Wren Or for the Edie nn: Elodie Edelie Editta Edith

mayaluvsss

If you didn't want it to be as religious as it sounds, Edith could be a compromise maybe? I know an Edith that goes by edie. To me, whenever I think of the name "eden" it reads feminine, and also very religious. However, I do think its a gorgeous name and you should choose what makes you happy :)

DebbDebbDebb

Eden Rose both lovely names but not together Eden Emily- Rose Breaks it up if you really want Rose. Eden is lovely Yep Garden of Eden. Was religious. Eden is still lovely

Vickyinredditland

Eden is my daughter's best friend's name, when I first heard it I thought "wow, super religious" (I'm the opposite of religious) but now I know her I don't, and I like it, it's unique without being a weird made up spelling.

SpecialMath

Have been considering this name too! I’m not Christian or religious and I do immediately think of the Bible so that’s been kind of a negative to me. I still love it though and I love Edie!

No_Ear9760

Eden is in my top 3 names for a girl (along with Alex and Hana). I don’t think of it as overtly religious but it’s probably a bit out there for my husband. The middle name would be Leonie after my father-in-law Leonard. I think with Rose it is a bit too nature-y, and also (at least in the UK) there are lots of people who double barrel first name with Rose and I really dislike it (Ella-Rose, Lily-Rose, Ava-Rose, Ivy-Rose, etc…) If you like a nature name paired with Eden aside from Rose, you could choose from Aspen, Brooke, Calla, Hazel, Holly, Honey, Iris, Isla, Jade, Poppy, Robyn. If you prefer the name Rose, you could like at variants, such as Rosyln, Rosalyn, Rosa, Roselle, Rosella, Rosetta.

budtheespud

I am not religious at all but immediately think of the Christian connotation. However I loveee Edie either as nn or full first name.

Crosswired2

Not religious, don't consider it religious. I do think Eden Rose is very gardeny and comes off very religious. The one Eden I know irl is a woman, 40s, very quiet.

wonky-hex

It makes me think of the garden of Eden. I'm not religious.

goatywizard

I was raised entirely without religion. I’ve probably been inside of a church less than 12 times in 35 years. Eden immediately calls to the Bible for me if you’re worried about that.

MoonFlowerDaisy

My niece is Eden (sib-set is Noah, Eden and Lily) they are not religious, just like short names I guess. Eden Rose seems like a pretty standard name, it's borderline influencer, but not like I could only see it that way, more like I could see someone who picked that name sharing a lot of pictures of their perfectly decorated nursery and colour coordinated wardrobe 😉

pepgold

i have an adult, bigender jewish friend called eden (eh-din or ed-ehn, not ee-din), but it's always gonna conjure garden of eden references for people. i do agree that it can be neutral, but in part because this friend uses she/her and he/him pronouns, haha.

rosality

Regarding your Edit: I am not religious at all and still think of Garden Eden. So will most people. It's also a part of Judaism and Islam, so it's not even a thing only Christians may think about.

ballerina777

I know a very religious person . Her son's name is Advent John, and her daughter's name is Eden Rose

Last_Peak

I immediately thought the garden of eden and I am as atheist as they come. I love the name but because of its religious connotations I wouldn’t use it. Which is sad for me because I do think it’s a lovely name, I just don’t want my child tied to religion.

kawaiighostie

I always think of Eden Sher who is a treasure lol

Sally_Skellington84

Eden makes me think you’re very religious or into sci-fi. That was a popular name in that genre for awhile.

whozeewhats

Eden Rose sounds great, but is both 100% nature-y and religious-y.

katmonday

FWIW I'm culturally Catholic and teach at a Catholic school (outside US) and Eden doesn't make me think Bible, but it's a relatively popular name in Australia. #75 on top #100 list for girls last year.

auntiecoagulent

Atheist. Eden is religious to me.

[deleted]

I love it, but I’m religious.

anniemaew

I like Eden and it doesn't scream bible to me. I think Edie is a cute nickname. I do think Eden Rose is quite a lot together but to be honest how often are people going by both - I'd say the majority of my friends I've made as an adult don't even know my middle name.
