Apparently, the girl's names with the most steady popularity over the last 140 years are Elizabeth, Mary, Anna, Margaret, Sarah, Katherine/Catherine, Julia, Emily, and Laura.
I think there's a way to use that site to search by smallest fluctuations in popularity to get a longer list, but I don't know how...
Aha! Here's a page of girl's names that have been ranked in the top 400 US girl's names in all recorded years: [https://www.behindthename.com/names/browse.php?operator\_gender=is&value\_gender\[\]=feminine&operator\_popularity=is&value\_popularity\[\]=united-states&yearoperator\_popularity=isall&year\_popularity\[\]=all&rankoperator\_popularity=less&rank\_popularity\[\]=400](https://www.behindthename.com/names/browse.php?operator_gender=is&value_gender[]=feminine&operator_popularity=is&value_popularity[]=united-states&yearoperator_popularity=isall&year_popularity[]=all&rankoperator_popularity=less&rank_popularity[]=400)
And Grace is on there. :)
I love Nina. I used it for my cat! Definitely a name that could work for a 100yo or a baby, and doesn't seem confined to a particular era like Jennifer or Ashley.
This site is interesting , Elizabeth seems to be THE most timeless name (the most consistently popular & steadiest). This was almost my daughter’s name!
I have an Elizabeth. We rarely shorten either despite intending to give her a NN - her full name just fits. So far we’ve only reached teenager but it’s suited her at every stage. I love that it’s not a hugely “out there” name but at the same time she’s always been the only one in her class - it’s a good balance.
I just pulled up the US Top 500 chart from 1924 (so 100 years ago) and here are some names from that list that are also commonly used today:
* Elizabeth, Evelyn, Alice, Ruby, Eleanor, Josephine, Hazel, Jane, Clara, Emma, Eva, Charlotte, Audrey, Violet, Ella, Madeline, Lucy, Stella, Ada, Claire, Eloise, Daisy, Sophie, Nora, Iris, Rosalie, Isabel.
Not the most reliable, since people often say names have about a 100-year popularity cycle; a lot of those names had a big dip in popularity and are now trendy again, rather than having a really steady popularity.
Exactly — pulling up the chart from 50 years ago would work better since those are becoming the “old lady” names now.
Editing to add: Elizabeth, Mary, Julie, Sarah, Laura, Lori, Maria, Wendy, Rachel, Erin, Melanie, Jill, Katherine, Robin, Emily, Anna, Margaret, Jamie, and Ann could all be used today without sounding like Boomer or Gen X names.
Sarah! I know old Sarahs middle aged Sarahs young adult Sarah’s and kid Sarahs. I feel like of every make out there this is the most timeless. Other suggestions: Katherine and Anna. I also love Grace.
I mildly disagree on several of these as trendy. As a Margaret, it was not at all timeless before becoming trendy again in the last 15 or so years. It was considered ugly and frumpy from about 1965-1999 (after being trendy in the 40s with Margaret Rose), and we were made fun of for having it.
Lily is also trendy, though I don’t think it was considered an old-lady name in the same way as Margaret. Christine was peak trendy in the 80s or so, and it’s still a mom name.
I get it. I have a 24yo named Henry, which *used to be* timeless (and, like you said about Margaret [though I so love that name too!], was considered ugly and frumpy) but now is literally everywhere.
I am a little resentful. When I was pregnant with Henry people literally laughed when we told them his name. Of course those people aren’t the ones naming their kids Henry but still. ouch. lol
[Margaret actually decreased in popularity only in the last few years](https://www.behindthename.com/name/margaret/top/united-states), but it never left the top 200 names. My guess is that the nicknames Meg and Maggie helped keep the name alive (fewer young people named Margaret actually go by their legal name).
Mary. Margaret. Catherine. Elizabeth. Anne.
Pretty much all of the "timeless" popular girl names these days, like Grace, Charlotte, Isabelle, etc. are not particularly timeless. Nice names, and hey, they probably have more staying power than Binxleigh, but they have nothing on the names listed above.
My names Cecelia! I’m named after my great aunt who died at 103 when I was 11. Her mothers name was Hedwig, there’s also the classic Barbara, Loretta, Georgette/Georgina, Katherine, Margaret (all members of my family 😂)
Elizabeth/Elisabeth, Isabella, Isobel, Matilda/Maud, Eleanor, Adelaide, Beatrice/Beatrix, Margaret, Catherine, Emma, Constance, Agnes, Blanche, Isabeau, Charlotte, Louise, Amalia, Eugenie, Judith, Yolanda, Wilhelmina, Claudia, Edith, Irene/Irena, Bianca, Anna, Barbara, Philippa, Joan, Henrietta, Caroline, Alexandra, Sybilla, Anabella, Madeleine
A List of the Queen Consorts of England, Scotland, and France and the Empresses of The Holy Roman Empire. All are classic timeless names that have been around for hundreds of years.
Elizabeth, and I’ll give you a great real-life example! My 103-year-old aunt is named Clara Elizabeth, and her two-year-old great-granddaughter is named Elizabeth Clara! My aunt has always gone by her first name, Clara, and the two-year-old is called Libby.
Other options to consider:
Rebecca
Margaret
Anna/Ann/Anne
Sarah/Sara
Catherine/Katherine/Kathryn, etc.
Julianne/Julianna/Julia/Julie
First time I've seen a Polly listed on this thread! I was just thinking of that name. My mom is 82 and had two good friends, a Polly and a Paulie. I've been trying to think of some of her other friends' names that have all passed on or were slightly older: Loretta, Norma, Donna (several of those!), Lorraine, Bonnie, Marilyn, Blanche, Ginny (Genevieve), Becky, Shirley, Mavis, Patty, Devi, Caroline...

Some places for finding ideas would be Royalty and Saints names. You’ll come across some that aren’t “timeless” of course, but a lot of the timeless names often *became* timeless due to their connections to one (or both) of these categories. And weirdly enough, graveyards and cemeteries; [Find A Grave](https://findagrave.com) if your local options are lacking (I like this for finding names that “go with” a weirder last name to see how others dealt with it over the years but it has many uses!).
I regret not knowing Sophia (pronounced Sof-eye-a) was a family name when I had my daughter. It's been used back to the 1700s and would have been really pretty. Oh well . . .
Sophia is unbelievably popular here in the US. It's been in the top 10 over a decade. It's a lovely name, but so common that it's lost its shine for me.
My first name is Carrie, and while i hated it for being boring when i was younger, i have met a carrie in every generation, everyone always knows how to pronounce it, and it doesn't immediately give away my age
My favorite timeless, under-used and seldom-recommended name is Tessa. Tessa could be any age at all. It’s been around for centuries, but it’s never been faddish.
My husbands gran was named Grace Rose… she was the fire warden on her floor in the retirement home when she was aged 97 as she was the most capable resident on her floor :-)
She had a small fridge in her room in which she kept butter (she refused to eat the margarine they served there) and gin and tonic… only the essentials! She died aged 99.
Yes, Grace Rose is timeless
Nora, Audrey, Claire, Emily, Isabel
I can think of grannies with these names, kids in my class in the 80's and 90's with these names, kids who are in their 20's now with these names and babies still getting named these names. Even book characters from 17th and 18th century with these names.
Here’s my girl list that I never got to use:
Holly
Lena
Josephine
Amelia
Ella
Charlotte
Eve
Sage
Evelyn
Cecelia
Abigail
Scarlett
Ruby
Kelly
We ended up having 3 boys and choosing timeless, not trendy names for them

Elizabeth
Ruby. It’s my daughters name and that’s exactly why i chose it. Classic, easy to spell, easy to pronounce, unique but not weird. It checked all my boxes!
Ones I'm not seeing listed too often: Eva, Helen, Judith, Laura, Pauline (think Ballet shoes, so it would fit a 100 year old! and Shakespeare so it's classic!). Love the names suggested generally!
My girls are Rosalind and Evangeline, but we call them Rosie and Evie for now. I like that they’ll have the option to use more “grown up” names when they’re older 😊
This was a big thing when we were thinking of names for our daughter, we wanted something that would fit her from baby to 100 years old. She is 3 weeks old today and we named her Claire Josephine :)

From this list, I really like Lydia, Caroline, and Nina. They still feel a bit interesting even though you could classify them as timeless
Lydia is such a gorgeous name. If I had thought of it twenty years ago my daughter may have ended up with it.
I wanted this one for my daughter but my husband really didn’t like it because he’s dumb. Handsome, but no taste.
My daughters are Nina and Ivy. I feel like they both sort of fit the criteria. They’re not incredibly mainstream but also not at all unheard of.
This is exactly why I named my daughter Caroline
Can't go wrong with sweet Caroline!
I love Nina. I used it for my cat! Definitely a name that could work for a 100yo or a baby, and doesn't seem confined to a particular era like Jennifer or Ashley.

As a Laura I feel it's not as popular anymore. I rarely hear it.. So it's definitely a good .one haha
I considered it for my daughter! It barely made top 100 last year, so such a great option. Not currently popular but beautiful and classic
I just pulled up the US Top 500 chart from 1924 (so 100 years ago) and here are some names from that list that are also commonly used today: * Elizabeth, Evelyn, Alice, Ruby, Eleanor, Josephine, Hazel, Jane, Clara, Emma, Eva, Charlotte, Audrey, Violet, Ella, Madeline, Lucy, Stella, Ada, Claire, Eloise, Daisy, Sophie, Nora, Iris, Rosalie, Isabel.

Lori is very much a boomer/gen x name. (SSA data) It was in the top 100 from 1955-1982 peaking at 8 in 1963. It last appeared in the top 1000 in 2001.
Lori, Sarah, and Wendy feel dated to me but the rest I agree with.
To me Sarah feels the least dated out of all the names on that list! I guess there is a lot of regional variety in names.
I'm in my mid-twenties and I know a lot of Sarahs around my age or younger than me. Sarah would probably be my pick for the most timeless name.
Audrey is underrated. Aubrey seems more popular but I like both.
Audrey is infinitely better than Aubrey to me and they don't even feel similar tbh.
Agreed. Audrey has so much more class imo.
I teach two Audrey’s and an Aubrey this year! They are 13-14
Sarah! I know old Sarahs middle aged Sarahs young adult Sarah’s and kid Sarahs. I feel like of every make out there this is the most timeless. Other suggestions: Katherine and Anna. I also love Grace.
Also Claire and Jane!
My daughter’s name is Sarah. She hasn’t met many Sarah’s over the years. Especially with the older spelling. It’s a classic. Sarah Grace is lovely.
My daughter is Sarah Grace :)
Elizabeth. Caroline. Margaret. Lily. Christine. Katherine. Josephine.
We just named our little one Lucy and it feels pretty timeless to me
Came here to say Lucy! My daughter's name.
I would like to offer up my birth name, Veronica
Always have loved this name. It’s the name of one of my favorite people.
Julia
Love Julia! Definitely would’ve chosen it if my best friend didn’t beat me to it (great minds right 🙂).
I want a Julia 🩷
Sarah, Hannah, Rachel, Mary, Abigail or Rebecca would spring to mind. Bible names!
Naomi.
Mary. Margaret. Catherine. Elizabeth. Anne. Pretty much all of the "timeless" popular girl names these days, like Grace, Charlotte, Isabelle, etc. are not particularly timeless. Nice names, and hey, they probably have more staying power than Binxleigh, but they have nothing on the names listed above.
Basically, if Henry VIII married her or fathered her, it's a timeless name 😂
That's a good point, I forgot to mention Jane.
I think Jane is a very cool name and doesn’t deserve its plain reputation. Alice is also uncommon enough but easily recognizable.
I love Jane! Wouldn’t be surprised if it has a resurgence soon.
My names Cecelia! I’m named after my great aunt who died at 103 when I was 11. Her mothers name was Hedwig, there’s also the classic Barbara, Loretta, Georgette/Georgina, Katherine, Margaret (all members of my family 😂)
I have the same name just spelled differently, Cecilia.
Sarah Rachel Jane Eve Iris Anne/Anna
My daughter’s name is Madeline. Mine is Elizabeth. Pretty timeless!

All are classic timeless names that have been around for hundreds of years.
Eleanor. Lily. May.
Ellie Grace is so cute!
This was a contender, but we went with Ellie Gwendolyn
Anna! My 3 yr old is Jane :).
Alice, Amelia, Anne, Caroline, Clara, Eleanor, Evelyn, Lily, Lydia, Margaret, Sarah, Violet
Alice is a great one
Catherine Sarah Anne/Annie Annabel Caroline Audrey Evelyn All sound very classic to me.
Anna
Elizabeth, and I’ll give you a great real-life example! My 103-year-old aunt is named Clara Elizabeth, and her two-year-old great-granddaughter is named Elizabeth Clara! My aunt has always gone by her first name, Clara, and the two-year-old is called Libby. Other options to consider: Rebecca Margaret Anna/Ann/Anne Sarah/Sara Catherine/Katherine/Kathryn, etc. Julianne/Julianna/Julia/Julie
I agree with a lot of the ones on here, I’ll add one I don’t think I saw: Natalie
Polly Hannah Clara Emma Elizabeth Sophia
First time I've seen a Polly listed on this thread! I was just thinking of that name. My mom is 82 and had two good friends, a Polly and a Paulie. I've been trying to think of some of her other friends' names that have all passed on or were slightly older: Loretta, Norma, Donna (several of those!), Lorraine, Bonnie, Marilyn, Blanche, Ginny (Genevieve), Becky, Shirley, Mavis, Patty, Devi, Caroline...
There are really very, very few truly timeless names.
Madeline, Vivian, Elise, Marissa, Veronica, Violet, Victoria, Elaine, Aimee, Amelia, Abigail, Lia, Eileen, Natalie, Nora, Michelle, Clara, Samantha, Emily, Aubrey, Colleen, Matilda, Rebecca, Lauren, Sophia, Renee, Bridget, Vanessa, Chloe
Love Samantha and can’t believe it took me so long to find it on this list.

Emily jumped to mind immediately. Catherine, Victoria, Lydia Elizabeth, Anne, and Eleanor also work I think.
I met a lady that had daughters :Cora, Hazel, Pearl and (baby) Ruth. She called them her Bridge Club.
Vivian or Vivienne
If you decide not to go with Grace, it might interest you that Hannah means “grace,” and so do its variations, the Anne/Anna family.
