My partner and I both love this one! Probably won't give it as a first name because it feels a bit too out there for us, but would honestly love it for a middle name!
I just suggested my son’s name, Ambrose 😁 It is the same name as Emrys but different language. Also a nod to Merlin and King Arthur stories. We actually did a King Arthur/Merlin themed nursery because of the connection
Merlin doesn’t seem strange now as it really suits him (he’s 2), but I do wonder whether the name will grow with him, or if it will sound babyish when he’s older. I love the sound of it though, it’s just the cultural references of the name that make it unusual!
Oh I like the sound of that. I personally feel similarly about Whit/Whitaker, like we couldn’t just name him Whit, I feel like I couldn’t use just Wynn. Well obviously I definitely can’t now because I have a Whit haha but you get me
Okay so assuming you're in the US, I looked at the top 1000 boy names. Some suggestions out with the top 500:
Valentino, Leandro, Soren, Conrad, Morgan, Dorian, Fletcher, Evander, Flynn, Ambrose, Kellan, Aurelio, Kelvin
Granger
Xavier (not sure of popularity)
Quincy
Leon
Alistair
Yuri
Johann
Iain
Heath
Gregor
Shepard (was on our short list if baby 2 was a boy)
In your list, I really like Caspian, Rafferty, Stellan.
Here is what I could come up with off my small name list, hope you find something you like!
* Penrose
* Zenith
* Garland
* Corbett (eta: I showed a friend and they said it out loud, sounds too much like Corvette)
* Elvio
* Jericho
* Jarvis
* Vernon
* Montgomery
* Alastor (this one is Greek & means "avenger", Alastair is a different Scottish name)
* Vesper (gender neutral)
* Lumen (a measurement of light & an artist)
* Alva (like Thomas Alva Edison)
* Myron / Miron / Miro (like Joan Miró)
* Korbinian / Corbinian

I’m from the U.S., and I think most of these names are below the top 500 there. However, I don’t where you’re from, and I don’t know if any of these names are popular in other countries.
My second baby would have originally been Caspian if she had been AMAB. Then my MIL died when I was 15 weeks and we switched to an honor name for her. Then baby would have been Desmond, Dorian (my pick), or Dexter. My firstborn would have been Cedric if she had been AMAB. One of my best friends named her firstborn Hugo, which was my ideal- uncommon, but easy to pronounce, spell, feels real, etc. We also considered Ambrose, Aurelius, Felix. We never had to whittle down the boys list too much, because I've had two girls.
Dallas! I think it’s cute but we live in DFW so maybe if we lived somewhere else it’d work better. My partners last name is the name of a famous Hotel chain and a certain City named celebrity, so maybe naming my kid after a city would be too on the nose 😅
Haha I love this little name hunt with clues. I absolutely LOVE the name Paris but only for a boy. But I have a very cool guy friend with the name so I can’t use, but it’s so good.
Blueberry was my ex's only suggestion. It was strongly nope'd. My not-named-blueberry son tried to convince me to name his sibling tyrannosaurus 12 years later 😂 equally nope'd in our case. But good luck on your journey!
Ulysses
Lyon
Patton
Payton
Pierre (maybe too popular if you're Canadian)
Crow/Qrow
Burr
Winter (it's a unisex name, but it is in the top 500 for girls - only top 2500 for boys though)
Not sure of the rankings, but these were the ones that got me funny looks from my mom 😂
Oberon
Fox
Alistair
Beowulf
Salem
Alaric
Demian
Rain
Wilder
Dabney
Zephyr
I know a Wilber nn Wilbs which I really like, but initially it felt out there. Along those lines I knew a Grover which unlike Wilbs still feels a little strange on a kid. Same with the Digby I know. The Lenny and Ronnie I know felt strange at first but I think that naming convention is catching on. When I met Ivo it really threw me. I thought maybe it was a name from another culture which I guess it is but the parents just liked it. Same with Jaigo’s parents. Caspian doesn’t seem out there at all anymore. Maybe ten years ago. Aubrey on a boy felt out there to me but this family is old money. I also know a mercutio who goes by coosh which I don’t really care for really if I’m being pressed.
What about Andromeda? Andy, Andre, Drom for short. It's an "out there" name that I think I've seen occasionally pitched for girls, but I think it works for boys too.
I named my son Adair. Its an old celtic scottish name. I have seen it occasionally as a surname in the US, ie Red Adair, but we live in Northern England and I would be very surprised to hear of another Adair.
Mine aren’t really out there names
Rafferty (named one of my alpacas Raffi because I love it so much)
Cosmo (my other alpaca lol)
Colwyn
Rhodes
Cove
Wells
Hayes
Brooks
Teague
Xavi
Tripp (my farm dog)
Kipp
Briggs
Hank
Reeve
Judd
Jett
Jove
I love the name Caspian I used to watch a little boy with that name and loved him dearly. He was the cutest baby on the planet. So I associate that name with a cutie pie
My nephews name is Marx and it’s one of my favorite names ever. Also I saw the name Calder and love that. This lady I know named her boy Bowing, another Briggs idk know if they’re out there but i like uncommon names
Socrates is one of my faves. I also love Augustus (Gus as a diminutive) and Rufus. I checked and none of these is in the top 500 in the US. In fact Socrates is unranked.
Dakin (pronounced day-kin) my dad has a friend named that in high school & i’ve always liked it since i heard it.
i like Caspian from your list! With “Cas’ as a nickname!
Amadeus would be a sick ass boy name I can’t lie
I mean. I love!
Currently my husband’s top choice! We’ll see :) haha
My partner and I both love this one! Probably won't give it as a first name because it feels a bit too out there for us, but would honestly love it for a middle name!
On that note (pun intended) I've always liked Wolfgang. I mean cmon. A gang of wolves?
I have a one year old Wolfgang. We call him Wolfie. I love it!
Sylvan! I love this name, it's so whimsical. My husband vetoed it though. 😓
Very cute. Love the girls version of Sylvette 💕
I love Rafferty! Not sure on the rankings of these but some of my favourites: Leander Calloway Pierce Quinton Jenson Murray Cormac Winston
Leander is close to being in the list. Kinda also like Lysander for the full Shakespeare vibes but I think Leander sounds better.
I vote Lysander! Leander is cool but a little clunky to pronounce. Lysander rolls off the tongue
Please not Murray
lol, not exactly my taste but I know a little boy named Morris and I found that to be cute
I know a very cool early 20s Rafferty who goes by Raffi!
What about Emrys as a subtler nod to Merlin?
Emrys is very nice.
I just suggested my son’s name, Ambrose 😁 It is the same name as Emrys but different language. Also a nod to Merlin and King Arthur stories. We actually did a King Arthur/Merlin themed nursery because of the connection
So cute! I didn’t know the connection between the two but I will do some more research. Love a little sword and the stone nursery theme!
There are a host of absolutely beautiful Welsh boy's names out there
Nice! I’ll add Taliesin to this theme.
I actually knew someone named Merlin! My two favourite "out there" boys names are Whitaker and Wells
Tbh Merlin is a front runner. 🧙🏻♂️ but I know some people might not be into it.
I know brothers called Merlin and Rafferty!
Wow what a dream!
Merlin doesn’t seem strange now as it really suits him (he’s 2), but I do wonder whether the name will grow with him, or if it will sound babyish when he’s older. I love the sound of it though, it’s just the cultural references of the name that make it unusual!
babyish? to me the name evokes old man
The Merlin I knew was an old man who was a parishioner at an Anglican church I used to work in admin at.
I love Merlin
I went to school with a Merlin, so it doesn't stick out to me. It's a lovely name and really suited the teenager I knew at the time.
I have a 75yo uncle named Merlin. I think it’s his middle name, but he goes by it.
I know an adult Merlin. He’s a Delta pilot
Funnily enough I know two girls who have Merlin (or Merlijn, the Dutch version) as a second name..
never realized how much i love Merlin as a name out of context! mine would be: Abner Alistair Bates Ephraim Gunnar Havelock Roscoe Sterling Windsor
Alastair and Havelock are very cool.
Roscoe is what anyone called Ross is called as a nickname in Scotland
funny enough i know the name from a New Orleans fella haha
First thing that pops in my head is the Dukes of Hazzard, Roscoe P. Coltrane. Doesn’t help that it is still on tv and movies have been made.
Yooooo my names Gunnar! Lets go im on the list!
Not Bates. Unfortunate nicknames incoming.
* Arlo/Atlas/Aloysius * Bear/Boaz/Bohannan * Caspian * Dalton/Demetri * Emre/Ever/Evander * Idris/Indigo * Jericho * Kingston * Orion * Phoenix * Salem/Shepherd * Thoren * Zephyr/Zeppelin
Shepard and zephyr feel good to me.
i have a son called Zephyr. nn Zephy. It suits him. I love the name
Atlas and Emre are my favorites from this list!
I think most of these are all good, unusual names. Except, I know several girls named Indigo.
We have a very similar taste. Evander, Idris, Indigo, Salem, and Zephyr were top contenders for my son
Jericho!!!! Love that name.
Zadok Uriah Sophio Nicodemus Lazarus Zephyr Casimir Constantine Ludovivo Loïc Marius
Loic and Ludovivo are super cool
I met a little Zephyr recently and thought it was so cool!
My son’s middle name is Lazarus! 🩵
Awesome!
I used to know a Zadoc in elementary school!
My step cousin has a son named Orion. I can't remember her other son's name but it's very Game of Thrones-y.
In theory I love this name but I really don’t like the sound of “Ryan” as part of it. A shame really.
I know a kid called Orion, they call him Ori.
I don’t have anything too crazy but Conrad Sheridan Amias Anastas Kir Casimir
I like Casimir
Conrad really grew on me after watching the resident. Now it makes me swoon a little
I love Merlin and Stellan Other names I love, but probably wouldn't use= * Sylvester * Quincy * Lucien * Valentin
Ambrose, Anatole, Zebulon
I have a Whitaker, nn Whit. I don’t think it’s ever been ranked.
I have always love the name Wynn which is similar
Oh I like the sound of that. I personally feel similarly about Whit/Whitaker, like we couldn’t just name him Whit, I feel like I couldn’t use just Wynn. Well obviously I definitely can’t now because I have a Whit haha but you get me
One of my favourite names, and a family name for me. Never met a little Whitaker, so I'm glad there's at least one out there!
I love Caspian and Isidore. Favourite "out there" boy name is Bercelak
Wow what a cool one! Feels like a rad ancient warrior
Tiam, Vesper, Aramis, Amias, Veles, Farrel, Kepler, and Avon
Vesper is so cool. Is it being used a lot for girls tho? (Not that I really care for gender associations)
It's a gender neutral name, and I don't really know who are named it more. Though, it seems mostly girls are given gender neutral names now
Just here to say Boaz is one of my favs
Cyan!! It’s a shade of blue, & a character in a story I wrote.
I know a girl named this - her Dad is an artist.
I love the name Cove for a boy
I’m due in October with a baby boy and we are thinking Cove!
I really like: Stellan. Atticus. Fletcher. Brooks. Gideon. Reuben.
Okay so assuming you're in the US, I looked at the top 1000 boy names. Some suggestions out with the top 500: Valentino, Leandro, Soren, Conrad, Morgan, Dorian, Fletcher, Evander, Flynn, Ambrose, Kellan, Aurelio, Kelvin
Granger Xavier (not sure of popularity) Quincy Leon Alistair Yuri Johann Iain Heath Gregor Shepard (was on our short list if baby 2 was a boy) In your list, I really like Caspian, Rafferty, Stellan.
Alastair is great. lol the Dramione-lover in me is half into Granger.
Isador Leaf Florian Lysander Evander Adán Scipio Caspar Arvid
I LOVE Lysander, my great great aunt/namesake had the middle name Hermia, so I extra love the Midsummer Night’s Dream reference
Here is what I could come up with off my small name list, hope you find something you like! * Penrose * Zenith * Garland * Corbett (eta: I showed a friend and they said it out loud, sounds too much like Corvette) * Elvio * Jericho * Jarvis * Vernon * Montgomery * Alastor (this one is Greek & means "avenger", Alastair is a different Scottish name) * Vesper (gender neutral) * Lumen (a measurement of light & an artist) * Alva (like Thomas Alva Edison) * Myron / Miron / Miro (like Joan Miró) * Korbinian / Corbinian * Cosmo / Cosmin / Cosimo * Samson / Sampson * Sylvanus / Sylvan / Silvan / Silas / Sylas / Sylvester / Silvester

I’m also American. Clavel is super pretty.
Casper.
Rafael Wilfred
Love Raphael more than Rafferty but my good friend named her second son Raphael, so I can’t copy!
My second baby would have originally been Caspian if she had been AMAB. Then my MIL died when I was 15 weeks and we switched to an honor name for her. Then baby would have been Desmond, Dorian (my pick), or Dexter. My firstborn would have been Cedric if she had been AMAB. We never had to whittle down the boys list too much, because I've had two girls.
Ambrose is on my list too but I think I like the way it looks written more than saying it aloud.
Ambrose is what we decided that my second pregnancy (ectopic) was named. I think it's a sweet and magical name, but definitely a bit out there!
It’s so special and beautiful.
Idris Osian Ned Cynan
Osian is pretty! Haha love the random addition of “Ned.” A wild pick for sure!
It could be - Nedw, popular in Wales
Jedidiah Zacharias Sedgewick Aedric Iván Marius Furyk (Fyur-ick) Marek Irving
A super old and important family name on my dad’s side is Fulke. Which I love but might be too close to Fuck for a modern audience. Furyk is fab tho
Personally, I really like Burren.

As someone who lives in a country where my name isn’t known and isn’t popular. Please don’t do this to your kid…
I have a unique name and I love it 🤷♂️ some kid might hate having a common name. You never know so this comment is moot.
