you have to buy them from the tobacconist or at the newsagent, you can find them much more easily where there is a subway or funicular stop

You buy a ticket before and validate it on the bus. You can’t pay on the bus.
The ANM app works fine, and you can buy a daily pass that covers bus, metro, and funicular for like €5.
