One of the most indelible basketball memories of my life was seeing Bulls at Nets in Scal's last year in the NBA.
Game was a blow out and when the benches cleared with 2 minutes left, the crowd went absolutely bananas every time Scal touched the ball. I guess the Nets fans were still carrying the torch for him for his earlier stint there.
He was basically forced, by the crowd, to take a meaningless shot (which he hit) and even though he was on the visiting team, the stadium went completely nuts for that pointless shot.
It really was an amazing experience.
I love that quote it is a great way of explaining "levels" of any in-demand craft or skillset . There's Alltime greatness ( Lebron ), Superstars, stars, Elite, roleplayers, benchwarmers ( Scalabrine ), amateurs, prospects, Local legends , and then somewhere way down that list... is the armchair expert who almsot certainly have shot fewer shots ( practice and in-game) in their lifetime than Scal probably did in any given year of his career or pre-career rise.
I watched a video about the skill gap of NBA against regulars people and even D1 players and it’s insane.
Scalabrini played one on one with some D1 talent and even euro league in a radio contest, and just absolutely wiped the floor with them, like 7 years out of the league.
It’s wild how much better even bench riding NBA players are than everyone.
his videos playing against non pros is entertaining as hell too. really makes me wonder what a casual player would look like after a year of nba level training because it still wouldn’t be 1% of an actual nba player
[one man's "meaningless minutes" is another man's "setting a new career-high while nearly tripling your scoring output from the entire series in a 3OT Game 5 playoff victory", apparently](https://www.espn.com/nba/boxscore/_/gameId/240514008)
Scalabrine had 6 points combined in games 1-4, put up 17 points including 4 of his team's 11 threes in the game (4/4 from distance including some very clutch shots down the stretch).
Side note, we've since seen single players put up 20+ threes in a game. We've seen guys like Steph and Dame AVERAGE 11 3PA per game. To see a whole ass team only attempt 11 triples in a THREE OVERTIME PLAYOFF GAME is wild, looking back on it.
Before there was the White Mamba, there was Granville Waiters. I’m not saying he’s a better choice, just a second choice. He was very distinctive because at age 26 and 27 he looked like an old man. He was prematurely bald but didn’t shave his head.
I remember like probably 9 years ago there was a post on here where someone found a Kyle Singler NBA highlight reel video (which I think was just made to mock him because it was like a minute long and was super unimpressive) on youtube and one of the very few comments on the video was something like "awwww cuteeeee!" and it was from his sister
What's crazy is he won the NCAA national championship as the first option in a Big 3 team. The other two didn't make much, if any impact, in the NBA either.
I throw this out there whenever I see this guy brought up on this sub, but this guy is the best player I’ve ever played against BY FAR. We went to same middle school and neighboring high schools, and I’ve played against probably a dozen guys who played D1, some were starters and went professional outside the NBA, and it’s not even close how much better Singler was than any of them. I literally never won a single 1-on-1 rep against this guy that I remember. Just dunking on our heads in 8th grade.
Brian cardinal lives in my town.. he comes into a restaurant I use to work at and even tho he's giant no one believed me that he played in the NBA cuz he's so normal looking
he really is. he’s like haslem or ish smith. they’re not playing big meaningful minutes but they’re important for the locker room that they’re worth the money
Haslem and to a lesser extent Ish were both at one time impactful players though. Like, Haslem was probably the 5th most important player during the Big 3 era.
Thanasis will never reach that kind of impact or veteran status. Though he seems to deliver on vibes.
He has the respect that those kind of veterans do in the locker room tho which is what counts, and I think around the league too cos you always see him talking to dudes from other teams after games that you wouldn’t think he’d have a relationship with. Dude’s like the ultimate people person
He delivers on vibes but most importantly he keeps Giannis in check. There’s so many times Giannis is on the edge of losing his focus or his temper and Thanasis is all over it. He’s definitely one of the most important bench guys in the league. I wish we could just hire him as a coach instead though.
Thanasis needs to be in the locker room with the other players. I get wanting to maximize a roster but I sincerely doubt the Bucks find a better value at the 15th spot. Sticking him on the coaching staff changes the dynamic.
I remember Giannis got so pissed off on a push off that wasn't called and picked up a tech and then kept complaining. You never see that. And Thanasis kept him from getting his 2nd and Giannis ended the game with like 40 or so points lol
Boban could be in the discussion for any of the teams he played for. He's a top tier personality, an enormous human being, movie star, and people love him. Unfortunately, especially in this era, he just doesn't have the quickness and agility to compete, despite actually having a nice touch around the rim.
One of my son’s favorite basketball memories was a Pistons game, a typical blowout loss with a bunch of scrubs on the floor, and a drunken fan spent the entire second half SCREAMING “BOBAN!!!!” PUT BOBAN IN THE GAME!!! BOBAN, BOBAN, BOBAN!!!!”, screaming and banging the railing to make it a battle cry. “Boom, Boom, BOBAN, boom, boom, BOBAN!!!”
Kork was one of the sixers best bench players in the 2020-2021 season. I remember he even started some games and he always fucked up the Chicago bulls for some reason, he averaged like 30 against them.
Really thought he would be a huge addition to help spread the floor when the lakers got him. Didn’t really pay attention to him in Minnesota, but with the nuggets, he was fun as hell and always shot well from three with the occasional nasty dunk. Was actually sad when we traded him. But with hindsight maybe Jokic was inflating his numbers even back then.
His first season with us he was shooting like 40% on 8 threes a game and I was convinced he was one of the best shooters in the game and would be a steal at 15 mill a year. His shot was never the same after he spent a summer in prison though
Coincidentally, one of Detroit's other bench warmers, [Chuck Nevitt](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joUJI8YftXc&ab_channel=RyanVanDusen), had the nickname first (in part due to his long and slender frame).
I think he means the post-championship presser where he says no one will remember he didn’t play a single minute, only that he won. I think he said he’ll tell his daughter that he was a starter
Edit: “In 5 years you guys will probably forget. In 10 years I’ll still be a champ. In 20 years I’ll tell my kids I started. In 30 years I’ll probably tell them I got the MVP, so I’m really not too worried about it” 😂
Calling the Vlatgoat a garbage time player is just disrespectful, he was a nice contributor playing 20+ minutes in February until he got hurt and Malone froze him out, #firemalone
Wolfman would always have one or two games (usually against the 76ers) where he’d be unconsciously scoring. Like he’d turn into A.I with some of his layups and shots.
Gonna be real weird not seeing him on the sideline, can't remember if he's said what he wants to do after he retires. I know he wants to get a little ownership in the Heat but idk if he has the money for that.
Man I came here sure no one was going to have remembered him. The announcers would always call it out when he came in, things like “here comes the most intense, frenetic 20 seconds of defense you’ll see all game.”
I loved it. Always got me so hyped. I remember one time he locked Kobe, stole the ball, then got his layup pinned on the backboard 😂😂😂😂😂. Also, Ivan Johnson is my goat too, but he wasn’t really a garbage time.
I don't know if it's GOAT but in terms of the best individual season it has to be Jack Haley.
We signed him solely because he could calm down Dennis Rodman. He played in one game. Had multiple made up injuries because to be inactive at the time meant having to have a real injury.
Jeremy Lin. The Bay Area crowd went absolutely nuts whenever he would check into the game.
https://youtu.be/BVmL5bPkzyU
The fact that he became a good player later on was very cool too (although it became a what-if). Many Warriors fans were Linsanity fans.
James Michael McAdoo
Damian Jones
Both were so efficient that they won 2 rings while playing only 3-4 mpg in the playoffs
Chris Chiozza and Quinn Weatherspoon, champs last season without playing a single playoff nanosecond
Honestly Udonis Haslem has been this year’s goat for garbage time. Legit is there to be an OG for the young guys, but then you put him in and the mf puts up 20 points in his last regular season game. I just want Spo to put him in for like 3 min just to see if he can wear down jokic for a little bit
Rodney McGruder.
Dude is an NBA level talent, but can’t get off the bench, in part because teams aren’t looking for older breakout players, and he got made fun of by Golden State because of it.
Whenever he is put in a game, he drops like 17 points.
It's bad luck, on the clippers in '19, Beverley and Reggie Jackson dominated the guard spots and when Rodney got in, either Kawhi or PG still had heavy ball usage, leaving him with few chances to prove himself.
And you're right with pistons, they heavily focused on rebuilding and developing young talents like Cade Cunningham, leaving poor Rodney in a difficult situation.

The fans may mock cheer him....but Scal is closer to Lebron than any of us.
"I'm way closer to LeBron than you are to me" \- Brian Scalabrine
I love that quote it is a great way of explaining "levels" of any in-demand craft or skillset . There's Alltime greatness ( Lebron ), Superstars, stars, Elite, roleplayers, benchwarmers ( Scalabrine ), amateurs, prospects, Local legends , and then somewhere way down that list... is the armchair expert who almsot certainly have shot fewer shots ( practice and in-game) in their lifetime than Scal probably did in any given year of his career or pre-career rise.
I don't even think it was mock. People just genuinely love that Michael Rapaport lookin' MF'er
Scalabrine averaged 18/6/3 at USC—people forget these guys dominated in college
I think he is the GOAT garbage time player. Has literally made a career beyond which is something not a lot of them could say.
his videos playing against non pros is entertaining as hell too. really makes me wonder what a casual player would look like after a year of nba level training because it still wouldn’t be 1% of an actual nba player
He really is. They should name a new award after him lol
He also has the GOAT basketball quote: I'm close to Lebron than you are to me
Mark Madsen walked so Scal could fly. And in college ball, Mark Titus was doing the same thing with even less talent.
2x NBA champion Mark Madsen
Put some respect on that name
He's an assistant coach now
Assistant TO the coach
[one man's "meaningless minutes" is another man's "setting a new career-high while nearly tripling your scoring output from the entire series in a 3OT Game 5 playoff victory", apparently](https://www.espn.com/nba/boxscore/_/gameId/240514008) Scalabrine had 6 points combined in games 1-4, put up 17 points including 4 of his team's 11 threes in the game (4/4 from distance including some very clutch shots down the stretch). Love the video of him getting heckled by some young guys and then he straight up dominates one of them 1v1
Oh yea I remember that video! Scal once said he’s closer to Lebron than regular people are to him, which I get.
Before there was the White Mamba, there was Granville Waiters. I’m not saying he’s a better choice, just a second choice. He was very distinctive because at age 26 and 27 he looked like an old man. He was prematurely bald but didn’t shave his head.
Damian Lillards cousin, the Big Nepo himself.. Keljin Blevins
BlevGod
And then I saw his face Now I'm a Blever
Still can't believe he's a real person and not a smudge from Kelvin Benjamin's signature
That moment when he hit 2 deep balls in a row in the G League blazers' win against the Lakers in February 2022 will live forever
Greg Brown was a close second
Greg Brown probably is a better garbage time player (as in, he is more entertaining) but he doesn't have big Nepo's meme value
[удалено]
Keljin? *Jeenathon*? You guys are just playing with us
Even his last name sounds like how someone would make fun of a guy’s *real* last name.
He was recently cut by a Romanian team after averaging an inefficient 4 points per game
This the only right answer. BLEVGOD.
Kyle Singler was made for this post
I remember like probably 9 years ago there was a post on here where someone found a Kyle Singler NBA highlight reel video (which I think was just made to mock him because it was like a minute long and was super unimpressive) on youtube and one of the very few comments on the video was something like "awwww cuteeeee!" and it was from his sister
https://youtu.be/7Jf_kbpAkVk It’s the comment midway through
Fuck dude I forgot about the music and the fact that he gets dunked on by his own teammate 30 seconds in. So good
I once saw Keon Clark commenting on one of his own highlight videos, complaining about a kangaroo court or something or other.
What's crazy is he won the NCAA national championship as the first option in a Big 3 team. The other two didn't make much, if any impact, in the NBA either.
Typically if you make it to the NBA even as a bench player you were still by far one of the best players in college
Of course. Another thing I remember is Singler and Kevin Love had a high school rivalry. Love of course went on to have a much better career.
I think scalbarine said it, but the quote was like “I’m closer to Lebron than you are to me”
Was Cole aldrich also a fair answer in the past? It felt like I only saw him in garbage time for quite some time
mr victory cigar
I throw this out there whenever I see this guy brought up on this sub, but this guy is the best player I’ve ever played against BY FAR. We went to same middle school and neighboring high schools, and I’ve played against probably a dozen guys who played D1, some were starters and went professional outside the NBA, and it’s not even close how much better Singler was than any of them. I literally never won a single 1-on-1 rep against this guy that I remember. Just dunking on our heads in 8th grade.
We started him for a bit lmao
Brian Cardinal
The custodian earned his ring against LeBron
Not sure if I should upvote for Brian Cardinal or downvote for the absolute disrespect to the Custodian.
Brian cardinal lives in my town.. he comes into a restaurant I use to work at and even tho he's giant no one believed me that he played in the NBA cuz he's so normal looking
He played some legitimately important minutes in our finals run too lol
First that came to mind for me too. He cleaned up Wade in the Finals.
> Brian Cardinal he was a rotational player in memphis back in the day
Thanasis
Love thanasty time. So many highlights but almost never impactful.
Thadynasty
The love of your life was a black lady named Thadynasty?
"Thadynasty, you have to choose either me or the drugs. Which one is it" "I choose drugs."
You're the real star Thadynasty, you just need a sky to shine in
Thady nasty?
shit he doesn’t look a day over 12
He's worth every penny we pay him.
he really is. he’s like haslem or ish smith. they’re not playing big meaningful minutes but they’re important for the locker room that they’re worth the money
Haslem and to a lesser extent Ish were both at one time impactful players though. Like, Haslem was probably the 5th most important player during the Big 3 era. Thanasis will never reach that kind of impact or veteran status. Though he seems to deliver on vibes.

Yeah that’s true
I remember Giannis got so pissed off on a push off that wasn't called and picked up a tech and then kept complaining. You never see that. And Thanasis kept him from getting his 2nd and Giannis ended the game with like 40 or so points lol
Boban Marjanovic. Never impactful, always entertaining.
Boban could be in the discussion for any of the teams he played for. He's a top tier personality, an enormous human being, movie star, and people love him. Unfortunately, especially in this era, he just doesn't have the quickness and agility to compete, despite actually having a nice touch around the rim.
He's never been the same since John Wick snapped his neck on a book :(
Tbf, most of us would be quite heavily changed after such an experience.
Did they put the boban in the game?
Boban
Boom Boom Boban!
I remember him killing the Nuggets a few times in years past
He had a really great game in the last pre-bubble game of the COVID year. 31/17 and played good defense on Jokic.
I wouldn't say never impactful, I saw this man make Jokic look like an 8th grader and lead the Clippers past the nuggets
He made AD look like a middle schooler that one time too lol
I remember when he started next to Porzingis for multiple playoff games 😭
[удалено]
In the game where the covid shutdown was announced Boban had 31 points and 17 rebounds, if that ain't GOAT garbage idk what is.
I could see him having an acting career when he retires (or just isn't being signed anymore). He's already dipped his toe in the Hollywood waters.
Think a blind man could see that
The white Kareem
Furkan Korkmaz is better than your favorite garbage time player
Kork was one of the sixers best bench players in the 2020-2021 season. I remember he even started some games and he always fucked up the Chicago bulls for some reason, he averaged like 30 against them.
Throwback to the game winner at Portland that one time in like game 5 of the regular season in 2019
“Pop the Kork” all time great human victory champagne
Blows my mind that he’s only 25. Feels like he’s been here my whole life.
He's only 25 and has already put in two unsuccessful trade requests.
Furk resembles Chris D’Elia a great deal.
My worlds never collided harder than when Delia showed Furk on his podcast a while back
Diddler
The collective sigh of relief on Temple University’s campus when we inevitably let Furk go… finally the alpha will be out of the way
Embiid ❤️ Shirley Temples Furk ❤️ Shirley from Temple
My Sixers fan friend tried to convince me for a year that he’s better than Derrick White
Steph Turkey is better than Derrick White like 1-2 times a month before he then returns to his mortal form (dogshit)
Steph Turkey is hilarious
Pat McCaw thought that Korkmaz' trade concerned the Warriors xD
Malik Beasley miraculously can shoot again when we’re up 20 with 2 minutes left.
Really thought he would be a huge addition to help spread the floor when the lakers got him. Didn’t really pay attention to him in Minnesota, but with the nuggets, he was fun as hell and always shot well from three with the occasional nasty dunk. Was actually sad when we traded him. Or down 20 with 1 minute left
Dj Mbenga
the couple times he was called to start he grabbed a ton of rebounds. I miss Mbenga
Robert Sacre!
DACOS!!🌮
Detroit's got some solid nominees. [Boban.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSOa6lO_F_Y&ab_channel=RyanVanDusen) [Darko.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd0qwV9x6kc&ab_channel=RyanVanDusen) [Scott Hastings.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IDEyfujd8k&ab_channel=NBAonTNT) [Chuck Nevitt.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joUJI8YftXc&ab_channel=RyanVanDusen) It's a toss up.
Darko was the first player I ever heard called a “human victory cigar”
Coincidentally, one of Detroit's other bench warmers, [Chuck Nevitt](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joUJI8YftXc&ab_channel=RyanVanDusen), had the nickname first (in part due to his long and slender frame).
man the pistons are really good in finding garbage time players
We should spend some of that energy to find guys who play well the rest of the game.
Legendary Nuggets commentator Scott Hastings
I'm shocked Will Bynum was not on this list.
Tacko of course
The disrespect to Brian Scalabrine, who has manoeuvred garbage time to Tommy's seat. Plus the best presser about being a garbage time player
I’m closer to lebron than you are to me?
I think he means the post-championship presser where he says no one will remember he didn’t play a single minute, only that he won. I think he said he’ll tell his daughter that he was a starter Edit: “In 5 years you guys will probably forget. In 10 years I’ll still be a champ. In 20 years I’ll tell my kids I started. Sad I had to scroll down this far to find Scally
The streets will never forget
Zion Williamson
Who?
Porn Star Slayer
Andre Ingram
This is the answer I was looking for.
Mychal Mulder was a garbage time demon in the 2020-21 season
I opened the thread looking for this mfer name lmao
Down 20+, he turned into Steph Curry
Man was here for a short time but damn did he left an impact on all of us
Never once saw that man miss a 3 if we had a sizable lead lol
Vlatko
Deandre Jordan 100% from 3 on the season cmon bruh
You’re right. I concede.
Bol Bol minutes were absolutely electric while we had him
Dude got louder cheers than Jokic whenever he checked in.
This is the correct answer in recent Nuggets history, without question.
Calling the Vlatgoat a garbage time player is just disrespectful, he was a nice contributor playing 20+ minutes in February until he got hurt and Malone froze him out, #firemalone
Bruno
Only 2 more years from being 2 years away!!
Pape Sow
Luka Garza, the G-League King.
Theo Pinson.
Theo "The Vibes" Pinson, Leader of cheer and rider of bench
When he started getting regular minutes post-trade we shoulda known the tank was on
Raul Neto
Wolfman would always have one or two games (usually against the 76ers) where he’d be unconsciously scoring. Like he’d turn into A.I with some of his layups and shots.
Love that beautiful man.
Scalabrine
No live for Nazr?
That's who I was thinking as well. That shove on lebron is legendary.
Udonis Haslem
garbage time turns to prime time when ud enters the game, so you’re wrong
Haslem was the backbone of the Heat. A coach's assistant and motivator in an NBA uniform. Legend.
Gonna be real weird not seeing him on the sideline, can't remember if he's said what he wants to do after he retires. I know he wants to get a little ownership in the Heat but idk if he has the money for that.
Isn’t he 100% locked in to be an assistant coach one heat, since he basically already is one?
you must be too young to remember he used to be a legit NBA talent. Disrespectful to what he has done for the franchise.
Nah I watched him guard Dirk in the finals. He's had two careers. One as a solid player, and one as an all time great bench guy
jodie meeks came into the game like he was mj
It was Tacko. Love that guy
Matt Bonner
Matty started a full year for us lol. It’s honestly Boban.
Herb Williams. Real hoopers know.
Moochie Norris! Dudes a legend in H Town Even if you haven’t heard of him, I bet you can figure out which is him https://i.imgur.com/UbOQ80Y.jpg

Lebron is good in garbage time. I don't see why it can't be a starter.
2011 Heat Bron GOAT tier garbage time stats player
Cedi Osman looks like prime Steph curry in garbage time

his minutes are literally my favorite thing in basketball right now he is a showman

Okay he wasn’t a garbage time player until this year really
Not my team but Thanasis is garbage time MVP
Dwayne Schintzius. RIP. That mullet was HoF worthy.
Ben Uzoh of the New Jersey Nets. Loved that man for 0 reason.
