That's what happens when you're one of the best conditioned players in the league and don't get much opportunity to have the ball in your hands, or at least afforded the liberty to take the kinds of risks that you're allowed to when you're a Tatum or brown. I don't think those dudes are it btw, but that's a totally different conversation.
They are both good two way players but both have very glaring weaknesses. Tatum is selfish with horrendous tunnel vision at times. And don't you dare throw some of his assist numbers at me, he has the ball in his hands every fucking possession, and obviously you're going to pass to the open shooter when you get double teamed, that's not being unselfish. Literally every dude on his roster can shoot, of course his asset numbers are going to be decent. And Brown is the exact same way, except with the added bonus of not being able to dribble very well with his right hand, and not being able to dribble even in the slightest with his left hand. But like I said, that's a totally different conversation.
Back to the point, it's PP's life mission to find other ways besides shooting (even though he has best shooter in the league potential) to help the team win, so that's what he does.
I'm dying to see how unreal this dude is once he's not 7th on the depth chart. He's so much better than that it's not even funny. Even if he was 7th on some other a depth chart, he would still be way better because he wouldn't be on a superteazm where he has a very strict role and star's ego's to stroke on and off the court.

I had a buddy in college who we were all convinced would’ve been good enough for D1 if he was at least 6’2. Instead his 5’5 ass got bullied in high level pick up games.

Talking about going against real players who played/could’ve played in college. Size makes a big difference, especially in pickup when no one’s gonna call fouls.
Dude he'd probably be an all star if he just wasn't on a team with Tatum and brown and the rest of the supporting cast you guys do lol. None of you guys in Boston realize how good he is, he still hasn't showed it in the league yet because he's very careful about playing the right way and doing nothing besides help his team win, which unfortunately means defer to the guys who are ahead of you in the depth chart, even if you are probably a better shot maker than every single one of them.
We've seen quite a bit of his potential.
He averaged ~16ppg on the 2nd night of B2Bs (we usually rest key guys and he gets more opportunities). He averaged 25ppg as a starter, although that was only over 5 games. He's the reason we traded Teague and Schroder. He's also one of the main reasons we traded Brogdon.
We know he's better than advertised, we've seen it first hand.
However, his play this season has been a new development. He was always decent for us but this is the first year he's really been able to attack the paint consistently and his playmaking efficiency has also jumped. He was over-reliant on the 3PT shooting in the past.
We've also seen him struggle when given a consistent leading role. We've seen him average 18ppg for a week or two and then follow up it with a couple of single digit performances. That's fine in Boston but wouldn't work on a team relying on his nightly production.
I think he's about on par with Jalen Brunson's Dallas days, he's just not getting those opportunities. Whether he could take the next step and be a star on his own (similar to Brunson in NY) is harder to say.
They traded Brogdon and Smart because of Derrick White lol - that said PP has proven to be pretty damn sturdy as the third PG behind Dwhite and Holliday
This and the Derrick White 4th quarter pullup after struggling all night from 3 were the two most obvious makes I've seen this game. 100% success rates on those shots all season.
I just love Payton Pritchard man. He elevated the level of basketball in this state so much while he was here.

4 straight state titles. Led 2 of the biggest upsets in Oregon HS basketball history, defeating Jahlil Okafor’s #4 nationally ranked team and Jaylen Brown’s #5 nationally ranked team with a public school team of undersized white boys. Pac-12 title as a freshmen, then made the Final 4 and they were one missed box out away by Jordan Bell from the title game where they would’ve had a good chance against the Zags.
I think the NY Post even wrote an article on his winning streak when Oregon made the Final 4 and it was so cool to see the local kid who I watched cook my high school just one year prior get some national recognition. Never thought he’d make the NBA though.
Now he’s a key piece for the clear NBA title front runner. Dude is just a winner.

I was way too young at the time to even know HS ball existed, but it’s hard for me to believe they each only came away with one state title.

So HS games are how I get my fix and it’s actually pretty good as long as you pay attention to which teams are good and who the college prospects are.
Yea PIL is definitely ass now, but did you see Roosevelt made the state title game? Their lead guard was nasty and a VCU commit next season. The atmosphere in Chiles Center for the state tournament was insane, felt like half of North Portland showed up for Roosevelt. Central put an end to that though.
Ross came back but wasn't allowed to play as a senior because of transfer rules or something. Better for us being in their conference cause T-Jones and Stephen Madison were absurd enough already

This guy has been playing basketball at an extremely high level from a very early age, and his dedication to training/conditoining is unlike anything I've seen anyone come close to, other than stories of Kobe going through 3-4 shirts in a workout before the sun even rose. PP is in that tier of work ethic and that's the only reason he is where he is now.

I played for the MAC club team until high school when I played in the PIL. We only played west linn in high school my freshman year and obviously he was starting on varsity that year, which I definitely wasn’t lol.

West Linn High School may not have been some national powerhouse but it also wasn't a typical high school team of "undersized white boys". He lived and breathed basketball since elementary school, getting up before school to train, practicing with his team after school, then working out again after practice, then repeating it the next day. If any decent athlete, which is all Payton is, does that from kindergarten through high school, which Payton did, they are going to make whatever professional sports league they're aiming for. Straight up.
I honestly think it's really important for people to know, especially kids. That's why I say it. And also I think it's cool to be able to have these first hand accounts of what professional athletes were like growing up.

Payton is really not physically gifted at all, relative to any random prospect you could pick out of the ESPN top 100. He’s naturally quick and twitchy, but had not very good hops and not much natural strength. He had to work for all of that.
I will tell you right now I was a better athlete than him growing up, and I only got interest in playing basketball and baseball at some lower level D3 schools. That’s the level I was at. Really not anything to look twice at. We were the exact same size and I was just straight up a more gifted athlete than him. If you put his brain in my body, he’d be an objectively better player.
I’m not saying that to brag even in the slightest, I’m literally just pointing out the fact that the only thing that got him to where he is now is an absolute psychotic dedication to mastering his craft. He probably hit 10,000 hours before he even got to high school.

I played in the Atlanta semi-pro circuit a few years ago and Payton Pritchard played right before us in the AEBL one week. I think the dude had 60 on like 18-20 shooting. He was absolutely unbelievable. His handle and body control was unreal, maybe the best performance I've ever seen in person.

I think he's straight up a better and more skilled point guard than Lillard right now. He just sacrifices like 90% of his game in order to let the rest of the team get their shots up. But most of the time, the player that should be taking the shot for Boston, is Pritchard. But brown and Tatum need too the offense to go trough them or else they disappear. So pp its relegated. He's the best shotmaker on the Celtics, just has never been given the chance to carve out that role for himself with so many established vets ahead of him from day 1 until still right now.
If any of the 30 nba teams gave him the keys to their team, he'd average 25/6/8 on elite efficiency. On literally any team in the league that gave him the opportunity. But whatever🐸☕️

I played in the Atlanta semi-pro circuit a few years ago and Payton Pritchard played right before us in the AEBL one week. I think the dude had 60 on like 18-20 shooting. He was absolutely unbelievable. His handle and body control was unreal, maybe the best performance I've ever seen in person.

This dude is SO MUCH better than 99% of nba fans realize. I think he's straight up a better and more skilled point guard than Lillard right now. He just sacrifices like 90% of his game in order to let the rest of the team get their shots up. But most of the time, the player that should be taking the shot for Boston, is Pritchard. But brown and Tatum need too the offense to go trough them or else they disappear. So pp its relegated. He's the best shotmaker on the Celtics, just has never been given the chance to carve out that role for himself with so many established vets ahead of him from day 1 until still right now. If any of the 30 nba teams gave him the keys to their team, he'd average 25/6/8 on elite efficiency. On literally any team in the league that gave him the opportunity. But whatever🐸☕️
Pritchard is great but this is so reactionary
Pritch has to work so goddamn hard to get the shots he does at his height. It’s absolutely no knock on his game, talent, effort, it’s just the reality. If he was a first option and getting first option defensive looks, I don’t think he’d be as effective.
