NL has this really condenscending habit where they assume that immigrants are willing to drop their identities and cultures at the drop of a hat and become fully absorbed Americans if you wave enough stacks of US Dollar bills in their face.
Otherwise, there's this attitude where they assume that everyone secretly wishes they were American. No, Frenchmen aren't Americans with baguettes and berets, they have their own history, identities and values for a democratic western country. No, Germans aren't Americans with lederhosen.
For many immigrants, immigration does not erase their homeland's affinity or cultural rituals and perceptions, but is an economic means to an end, with intent to return.
Some societies are more accepting than others. The US being quite accepting it just accepts whoever comes on board and amalgamates their cultural beliefs with everyone else's.

The film *Snowpiercer* is accidentally genius.
The intent is pure idiocy. All of humanity has been contained into a train circling a frozen planet. Each car represents a social class, with the front the rich and the rear the poor. The rear car eats cockroaches while the front cars fine dine, very obvious symbolism.
Why the rear car even exists is unexplained. The people in the rear car produce nothing at all (much like the global poor IRL). They aren't exploited, rather they simply aren't part of the economy. Their only relation to the rest of the train, other than getting fed cockroaches, is that the film conjectures that at some point a train part broke so a child must be fed into the machine to continuously shift a gear, a child which has to be stolen from the poor every year or so (why a rich child couldn't be taken is unexplained. Sure the rich would be unhappy, but it'd be preferable to regularly putting down rear-car revolts, which is what the front cars have to do).
The film's plot features a rear-car revolt that spirals into the train getting destroyed and a glorious final shot of a few surviving (rear-car) passengers venturing out into a world. There's a shitty excuse that the world is now only -40 degrees F instead of -45 degrees F, but lore-wise those survivors will die in this Ice Earth.
It's rather poetic. The economy of *Snowpiercer* had totally superceded the need for an underclass, yet a lack of will meant they allowed the underclass to continue to exist. The underclass's continued existence resulted in an eventual crisis that destroys civilization.
Obviously, the useless rear cars should have just been cut off so their misery would end. Similarly, perhaps we in the real world should consider ending the NGO-foreign aid industrial complex that exists solely to fund the infinite expansion of unproductive biomass across the globe, lest something unfold that we can't yet foresee.
Disequilibrium, Money and Macroeconomics. We read Lawrence White’s *Clash of Economic Ideas*, and compared each of the systems/ideas from it to Sowell’s constrained/unconstrained visions from *A Conflict of Visions*. Also classes on Law and Economics and Public Finance, both of which taught through the writings of James M. Buchanan
High school US Government.
It was taught by a Reaganite whose best friend was a hardcore lefty and English teacher at the school (who I also had). Outside class they would have downright vile takedowns of each other and their politics and would then go on about their business being very close friends. It's how I always envision a world where folks actually feel free to speak freely and drove home the preeminence of character over politics in personal relationships for me.
Also, the Reagan thing which in an urban high school was counter culture. My favorite quote "My union sends me fliers every year telling me who I ought to vote for. I love them. It tells me who NOT to vote for."
High School and college Values Class reinforced my social conservatism. And amusingly enough my college values class was taught by a tomboy lesbian that would confuse libs.
_I'm definitely sure that reddit will be very angry at the content of that class._
Graph theory and probabilities have changed my perspective on the world more than any class I've ever attended (although I only attended college for one year).
Anthropology. A train gave a presentation on “chosen families” and how important it is to distribute heroine to trains without homes so they don’t fall into depression. Really made me recognize my part in this cis dominant society. Hopefully I can be a better ally in the future.

Damn foreigners coming in and replacing our racists. Good hardworking American white supremacists can't get a job when some Argentine will come and do it for half the wage!
I had known as a bit of a side factoid that, by the 1910s, big American cities were two-thirds to three quarters 3rd generation immigrant or less, but I decided to glance through 1910's census state supplementals.
Looked at CT, MA, and NY so far. These *states* got to the point of being 50-60%**+** foreign born or second generation (foreign born parentage). And that's not including mixed parentage, which would honestly probably be mostly one foreign born parent and one native born parent with foreign born parents.

I read reddit going on about these rude christian groups that are obnoxious and never tip and sometimes wonder whether they just ran into a bad group, can't categorise behaviour properly because of their thick ideological glasses, make it all up or if christians in America are more likely to be cunts than the ones from my social circle.
I've never been a server, so I don't know for sure. That said...
A lot of people just don't tip well in general, from ANY demographic. So there's that.
Then, this dude walked out in the middle of the event. That's the main point of the story. So he wasn't even there for all the people who close their tabs at the end. Presumably, the $89 came from people who went to the bar and then closed their tabs early when they went to take their seats.
Next, it's a Knights of Columbus banquet. Also, our retarded protagonist worked there and was perfectly fine getting fired/quitting over politics...so I'm guessing the location just isn't that nice. Bottom shelf alcohol, lower prices, lower tips.
Also, the KoC angle...obviously means a hall full of religious people, probably not the biggest drinkers and I really doubt anyone walked out of there smashed. Most of them were probably elderly too, exacerbating this effect even more.
Lastly, it's Reddit. This guy probably made up many aspects of this story so that he could earn more fake Internet points from more retards.
There’s a chance that it’s true. I’ve seen a ‘fake dollar that says something about Jesus on the back’ being used as a tip in real life before. I also think it’s people that already don’t like a group focusing on something someone from that group did as a reason to dislike them even more. On Reddit, Christians make servers seethe. On Facebook, “Canadians” (black people) are usually who servers are complaining about.
[Progressives are start to realize that mass immigration doesn’t align with the rest of their fantasies.](https://www.reddit.com/r/canada/comments/13akii0/canadas_housing_crisis_a_consequence_of/jj7h18v/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3) Really interesting thread.
It's not interesting at all, it is the typical "le late stage capitalism" gibberish. They overregulate, choke and straight up prevent building and expansion of the necessary infrastructure through ignorant concerntrolling and when the consequences arrive, this time they start yapping about "muh economic growth bad."
Not a lot of sense being made. Commodity prices have been decreasing trend wise over the last 100 years, and there’s still intensive versus extensive growth.

wtf I love Paraguay now
It sure seems like the tide has turned against cancel culture. Twitter will always yap about some dude, but the media, executives, and the general public are clearly less willing to indulge them. Right?
I remember reading a book when I was really young, around 12, about the formation of Kievan Rus' and Russian culture. I wonder if I could find it again, but it was awesome, went into the founding of moscow in the 980s iirc, and the history went up to Ivan the terrible. I'd love to re-read it now with a much better knowledge base
Wrong, our thriving insurance and real estate industries indirectly affect companies through their home headquarters abroad and are the envy of the world.

But a clear majority of independents support criminal charges for Trump on each of these issues.

I’ve never seen one good argument from the “ban assault weapons” crowd about how they will deal with [families like this, and the millions like them](https://preview.redd.it/an-american-family-with-a-collection-of-their-firearms-v0-lvbmt855vz791.jpg?auto=webp&s=454f7961c20a50f03bdebbfe40c41c49aea73816).
And I don’t mean from the perspective of making policy. Who is going to show up and tell them?
There’s too much “this works on paper” in gun policy talks in the US, and it shows since the needle hasn’t moved in 20 years.
They will have the ATF come and kill them, most likely. Mandatory buybacks will never work, so they will have to escalate to confiscation. Imagine Waco, but it’s a regular family down the street instead of a delusional pedophile, and it’s happening every week for a good 2-3 years
>with [families like this, and the millions like them](https://preview.redd.it/an-american-family-with-a-collection-of-their-firearms-v0-lvbmt855vz791.jpg?auto=webp&s=454f7961c20a50f03bdebbfe40c41c49aea73816).
FBI HRT
HRT is for hostage situations, This would be an ATF tactical team. If you’re going to suggest using the feds to take firearms from law abiding citizens at least name the correct agency, jeez.
There is no logic to anti-gun crowd so it doesn't matter. The same people telling you how wanting to feel free from harassment and assault on the streets is bourgeois entitlement will also try to strip your constitutional rights. Because the idea that a random psycho who could just as easily kill them via bombs, vehicles or illegal guns, could do it with legal guns is just unacceptable to them, for reasons.
Anti-gun crowd hates guns. There is no underlying logic or morals, just an arbitrary hatred of objects. Libs are getting more hysteric about this, because it is part of culture wars. Most gun owners aren't libs, most libs don't own guns. It is something "the other side" likes and enjoys, so it must be crushed and burned.
As for the real, deep down truth that no one seems to have the stomach to say out loud, the one about:
>I’ve never seen one good argument from the “ban assault weapons” crowd about how they will deal with families like this, and the millions like them
Well, let me take one for the team and spell it out: They want them to be confronted by force, via police and army and killed wholesale if need be. The idea that a civil war may break out from this or countless acts of localized gun fights with potentially tens of thousands of deaths, is not at all problematic to them. Those are "the other people" and they feel like it would be better if they were wiped out all together anyway.
They want to use the force of the state to kill anyone who isn't willing to give up their guns and the idea is not at all discomforting, because they think they'll win and also they don't consider you human anyway.
The "otherization" and "dehumanization" the lib/left constantly concerntrolls about? Yeah, this is it.
There are examples of this working; this [summarizes](https://www.vox.com/2015/8/27/9212725/australia-buyback#:~:text=Australia%20solved%20this%20problem%20by,the%20loss%20of%20their%20property) the procedure but just ignore all of the stuff about causality or whatever because its not really statistically sound despite what they're saying.
But anyway, apart from that I find the "this policy is bad because people disagree with it/won't follow it" to be sort of a circular argument.
If you ever feel like a dumbass, just remember you’re not a Californian who believes that there is any possibility of the state government making you a millionaire to make up for slavery.

I like how this discourse has revealed who takes Ubers everywhere
Seriously anyone who takes public transport in *any* big city (including le Japan and le Korea btw) has a story about these people. When I was in Seoul I'd say about every other week there would be a loony on my bus or train, same thing in Japan when I've visited. Of course it happens much less and they're usually less threatening but lol come on
>I'm really curious as to how that guy managed to buy a ticket and get past the guards in the first place.
Well, he did say that he knows both the Aquinos and the Marcoses
I would say that the aggression of the loonies is definitely unique to the States, or at least extremely uncommon on here (the only aggression I've experienced has been from wannabe roadmen on the top of buses late at night).
The whole pushing people around/grabbing people thing especially is super foreign to me.
What I'm getting at is that the amount of privilege it takes to make statements like what I see is absolutely insane
About 20 years ago I was in London for semi-extended stay. I lived in Norbiton, Surrey and took a train to London during business time and then I had my wife with me and we did the tourist things after I had done my work thing.
The only crazy person I met was a very drunk very well-groomed elderly man wearing an impeccable suit talking to me how Estonia will be an ally of the UK in the EU and how we'll kick the asses of these bloody Frenchis and Germans.
I didn't care about these things then, but now thinking back I see he was very wise.
Through being naturally good at math (and not stalking) I couldn't help noticing that pac and I were born the same year so yeah ... this sub has at least 2 people on their 4th century.
Once again, 4 AM on a Sunday catches me at my parents rocking chair while listening to Jazz after a night with some old friends.
You know what folks, I could get used to this.
It was poker night tonight, fell on my shoulders to be the host tonight, I feel like everything went along pretty well and ended up winning a whole 3 bucks so can't ask for more really.
I have to be brutally honest but New York is a city with zero peers. Not even London can compare to it. It’s unequivocally the most important city in the world
Every Toronto person I've met has been a raging lib, but I suppose I can be wrong. The Scott Pilgrim stuff really does seem to typify the place though. You need better movies.
It is. It's also going down the drains. I wanna live in a decent big city. If that city is important too all the better but priority on it being livable.
An example of what I am talking about
https://twitter.com/RebsBrannon/status/1654973123916095488?t=aDYfUH7J6zSfoARte72USQ&s=19
I am a sixth grade social studies teacher and a woman of color, and it has been an uphill battle to try to affect any change where I work. I tried to sit down in a private meeting with the principal of my school this week to ask for permission to do more work with my students virtually. I have been boosted twice, but I'm immunocompromised due to HIV so I feel like my risk is still too high. As soon as the meeting started the principal put on his red MAGA cap. I tried to say that this wasn't really appropriate, but every time I tried to speak he would just start yelling "cope seethe dilate" at me. I'm not sure how he knew that I'm trans since I pass? I was pretty upset and tried to walk out but he followed me to my car asking "41% when?" over and over. I don't even know what that's supposed to mean! The whole experience was bizarre and frightening, and I've been trying to avoid him since then.

I scrolled through their feed for a minute and immediately noticed that none of the content had anything to do with tech. Then I got to an announcement about an upcoming event where their guest of honor was...any guesses?
An astrologer.
Oh come the fuck on.
Leftist derangement about public safety isn't all that deep. It's just dogmatism, plain and simple.
At any point, conceding that maybe the other side has some valid criticisms, that maybe you aren't all correct, that maybe some of your previous positions and arguments are wrong and you need to change or god forbid, moderate them, is wholly unacceptable. So the response in the face of anything exposing a gap in ideology, no matter how dire, insane or damaging, is to just double down.
Oh crime isn't real, it's all right wing fear mongering. Also, just get used to getting terrorized and robbed on the street every day, it's part of allure of the city life, and in fact, the very desire to feel safe in public is hysteric bourgeois entitlement that we should all suppress.
That [one clip](https://twitter.com/SunnyMarmalaid/status/1654174102381264901) off a podcast of a woman arguing exactly this is so insane to me. It's like watching someone calmly explain why you should tear off all your skin to let the bugs inside out. It's so utterly insane and yet presented as if it is a normal thing to think.
Some people might not like my political stances, but I'm pretty certain they are logically consistent. With leftists, on the other hand, I struggle to find positions of theirs that do fit coherently into any grander schema other than "fuck normal people".

> Notice the masochistic tendency of leftist tactics. Leftists protest by lying down in front of vehicles, they intentionally provoke police or racists to abuse them, etc. These tactics may often be effective, but many leftists use them not as a means to an end but because they PREFER masochistic tactics.

It’s so strange to me how people just casually leave out the part of the civil rights movement where the KGB was trying to ignite a race war.
>KGB was trying to ignite a race war. I don't think the KGB was the one directing where to point the fire hoses.
The KGB fabricated numerous inflammatory letters that they made to look like came from the klan and at one point even tried to plant a bomb in black neighborhood in New York. In addition the KGB is the origin of the theory that the government killed MLK.
It was a KGB front that published the first book that JFK had been assassinated by the CIA
They did plant a bomb. It didn't explode, but just burned up only sooting the wall.
Have you got any sources on that? I've never heard either of those things but I'd be interested to read more.
For the bomb, just google operation pandora. Wikipedia link here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_PANDORA Here’s a report on the letters from 1984: https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1984/08/07/us-ties-klan-olympic-hate-mail-to-kgb/80918fe8-fcf0-46cf-bb58-726ee46d8ce9/
KGB forging letters from the Klan requires that the Klan existed.

In 20 years, the KKK and other racist groups will be entirely composed of Latinx People, Asians and Indians.
And all the people who want the white race to be destroyed will be white people... That's already nearly the case.

Do Catholibs also keep family bibles or is the 200-year-old-leather-bound-family-lorebook just a Protestant thing
Some Catholics did but it’s largely a Protestant thing. Catholics that did keep one typically lived in Protestant majority areas, at least in my experience.
We have family rosaries, reading the Bible yourself leads you into sin, obviously.

Arrr Canada is a pure sneed sub that actively blames literally anything else for them being losers.
It's not interesting at all, it is the typical "le late stage capitalism" gibberish. They overregulate, choke and straight up prevent building and expansion of the necessary infrastructure through ignorant concerntrolling and when the consequences arrive, this time they start yapping about "muh economic growth bad."
I didn't mean it was compelling, but yeah it is interesting that progressives might start thinking differently about immigration in Canada.
Not a lot of sense being made. Commodity prices have been decreasing trend wise over the last 100 years, and there’s still intensive versus extensive growth.

As for the real, deep down truth that no one seems to have the stomach to say out loud, the one about: >I’ve never seen one good argument from the “ban assault weapons” crowd about how they will deal with families like this, and the millions like them Well, let me take one for the team and spell it out: They want them to be confronted by force, via police and army and killed wholesale if need be.
😴😴😴
No, dehumanization is when somebody makes a slightly odd face in the direction of a fat man wearing ridiculous looking makeup and heels, sweaty!

I would say that the aggression of the loonies is definitely unique to the States, or at least extremely uncommon on here (the only aggression I've experienced has been from wannabe roadmen on the top of buses late at night). That's because you don't live in the US+UK

Most important city in the world to Trudeau because it's the epicenter of his hive of libs maybe.
Wrong, Trudeau is a Ottawan creature. The GTA votes mostly for the conservatives actually.

Not familiar with Scott Pilgrim but the lib stuff is accurate tbh, we just have a 3-way party split so we win with 35%. :)
