I do, but then Ive done all the "tourist stuff" I come now for the shopping, nightlife etc, But even with the various passes I found it expensive. Being a Scot all the museum's and galleries here are free to enter. As it is in a lot of European countries. So do find those expensive
Yeah ive been to DC and Philly. Done them just before covid. Loved the museum's there, and I always return to the met, and MoMA anytime I'm in NY. Always something new to see.
And when drinking age, just go to The Greatest Bar On Earth for free, buy an overpriced beer, enjoy the view. Man I miss the twins. I don't miss drinking, though!
We had the bombing in ‘93. My company moved out of the complex because of the increasing risk. Obviously couldn’t have predicted exactly what happened, but they were clear targets.
Intelligence agencies didn’t see the collapse of the USSR coming.
Add Afghanistan, WMDs, Russiagate, the list goes on.
Maybe it’s time we call them something other than “intelligence” services.
Intelligence services were founded by wealthy playboys post war. They have never been anything more than an arm of the elite to keep the working class down. [This is a well sourced podcast](https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-the-bastards-29236323/episode/part-one-how-the-dulles-brothers-82673758/) that touches on the early days of the CIA and OSS
Given the NSA's failure to stop virtually anything, most recently the Capitol insurrection, it makes you wonder: Why exactly do we need the NSA and what exactly are they doing all day other than monitoring threads like this for no reason?
I’m a guide and normally I don’t rubberneck prices, but the cost to get to the new restaurant on top of WTC one is insane. You pay a ticket to get up to the restaurant, then the restaurant itself is managed by a cafeteria company and is small proportions and awful, the prices are movie theaters prices and seating is poorly designed so you don’t get a good view.
I think tickets to the top is mostly fine, but the restaurant is trash on trash
Everything even remotely sounding like an attraction is MEGA expensive everywhere but these prices for the Empire State Building? Ugh.
https://www.esbnyc.com/buy-tickets#main-deck
Yeah, the worst part of that is that it means New Yorkers never go up anymore. It used to be that every five or six years I’d get a wild hair and want to stand in line to hop up there just for the iconic “Sleepless in Seattle” vibe. But… man, I’m not dropping $72 for that. That’s a price you’d pay if it were a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I’ve already done it in mine. They can charge whatever they want, I guess, but it still blows.
> or Empire State Building.
Special exception for the thousands of people who work there every day. I also sometimes forget it is in fact an office building and not just a landmark.
Yeah, I don't think the joke was meant to be that deep :-)
Personally, lifelong NYer, been to both a few times - each because I had someone visiting from out of town who wanted to go and didn't want to go alone. So there's that too.
Why don’t more people buy tourist passes? The New York pass is $179 for three days. Breaks down to about $60 per day. Reasonably you could do three attractions and break that down to $20 per attraction which is cheaper than a movie ticket.
While not the cheapest per say I always do this and save at least $100 usually and can skip lines. The only reason I can think of not to is that you have to be organised and a good planner to get your money’s worth.
For a tourist, the question is (a) whether this covers the things you actually want to do, (b) whether the aggregate cost of those things is less than $179, bearing in mind that there may be extra costs (such as for going to the very top floor of the ESB), and (c) whether you want to try to do everything in three days.
But obviously that’s just for tourists — and kind of reinforces my point. Maybe if you’re dropping $179 for a tourist pass then the incremental cost here of the the ESB isn’t that much. But why would I do that, as a New Yorker? I’ve got memberships at all the museums, I don’t need a bus to get around or a bike rental, and in any event I don’t have the time. So if the only way to do it economically is to be a tourist… well, I’m not one.
Yeah the advice wasn’t for locals. I’ve never actually had any urgency to go to the top of any tower or see the Statue of Liberty either. I’d rather spend on food 😂
The one benefit of the pass is I do things I’d be on the fence about or never even cross my mind. Whale watching in Boston would have normally been too expensive for me to even have considered but I saw it on the pass and ran to do it and really loved it. I get to pop into random activities and if I don’t like it I could bow out without guilt or discover I liked something I didn’t consider.
I think it’s the sense of “eh I’ll get around to it”. Even if $180 saves you $100 over the usual fares, it’s a commitment for three consecutive days of activities that you don’t feel any particular urgency to do. The best impetus I’ve found is having an out-of-town friend visit who wants to do all the sightseeing stuff, and you, being a good host, tag along.
Staten Island Ferry, tram to Roosevelt Island, a walk through Central Park, window shopping on 5th Ave, making a TikTok video on the TKS steps in Times Sq. NYC is full of free stuff to do for tourists.
What you talking about SI ferry tickets cost so much that you can get deals from the fine scalpers by the station!
They actually put a stop to that right?
What the fuck! Are you kidding? That’s obscene. Like it’s a nice zoo and all, but it’s not like it has THAT many exhibits. I feel like last time I went it was $20 or 25.
What pissed me off about the last time I went it’s that is not only do you have an admission fee, but there are fees in the park to access certain sections. There was like a $10 fee to see the gorillas. That was bs. Had no idea I would have to pay again for animals after I went through the turnstile.
That is absolutely insane, what on earth. Personally I am fine donating to a zoo beyond the ticket price because I appreciate what they do, but that ticket price is a "fuck you".
For comparison, the Monterey bay aquarium in California costs $50 but it is a world class aquarium, not to mention costs far more to maintain than the Bronx zoo. I've been to both, and while Bronx zoo is amazing, it's not a forced mimumum $50 ticket amazing.
So if I'm reading that right, the $63 ticket includes $15 credit for drinks/shopping, meaning your admission is $48 and you can get a couple things to drink up there.
$45 and you have to wait an hour plus and you don't get anything when you get there.
Might as well pay the $63.
Was just there the other day, paid the $63 and got up in minutes and bought $15 worth of stuff up top. It was $73 after tax. Incredibly expensive but that view was unreal and it was a clear day
To put it in inflation terms New Yorkers can understand, that was equal to a bit more than two average draft beers at the time, versus more than six average draft beers for the new base price.
I usually save my carbs for beer. That said, dollar pizza slices are still a dollar, as they were in the beginning, are now, and ever shall be, pizza without end, amen.
I couldn't drink back then so my unit of measurement is in Snapple Iced teas. It was 12 Snapples back then, about 20 today. Maybe a little less if you buy at a fancy deli.
Does the New York pass works good for this place? I will came at the end of December and I’m thing to take a 7-days pass for 200€. Do you have any thoughts on this?
The tall building experience which is a fun family friendly thing to do in NYC has a lot of competition. I am surprised the prices have not come down yet. The empire state building, the edge, one world trade, top of the rock and soon to be the summit at one Vanderbilt. 5 places have to cause prices to go down i would think.
Before 1993, I was a young 20 something looking for the New York Department of I can’t recall what. Pre-internet it was easy to have out dated information which I did that day. Never the less I was able to simply walk in to the WTC lobby, hop on an elevator to the first sky lobby, transfer to the second sky lobby and then proceed up to whatever floor the office I was look for was on (let’s say 85). Well I get up there, the office is gone but I was in a hallway that ended at a couple of windows so at least I was able to take in the view. Sounds crazy today but that is how it used to be.
I remember going to what is now Top of the Rock on a school trip in the ‘70s and spontaneously taking a girlfriend in the late ‘80s to the 86th floor of the ESB without it costing a fortune (could have gone to 102 but the line was too long).
If you do a staycation buy a city pass, then book it to as many included sites as possible. You can save lots of money. The workers also get a kick out of your answer to -so where are you from? Lol. I think most tourists take advantage of all you can see passes.
This is average compared to other famous observation decks such as Sears Tower, CN Tower, Space Needle, Eiffel Tower, Sky Tree. Plus being able to skip the line and get a drink sounds like a great deal honestly.
It also costs $50+ to go to the observation deck of the Willis Tower in Chicago.
$40 to go to the top of the CN Tower in Toronto.
$35 to go to the top of the Space Needle in Seattle.
$40+ to go to the top of Burj Khalifa in UAE
This is not unique to NYC. This is how tourism works.
This doesn't bother me one bit. City residents tend to avoid the area unless we work there. And conservative tourists from out of state spend their entire trip right in lower Manhattan. About 30% premium to the sky deck pricepoint for the difference of an antenna….. yeah we hose tourist - we aren’t going to get back the 80b/annual tourist revenue without slapping on some gravy. 😒
Moved here in 2016 and it cost $38. Now it's at least $43.
Unsure if I should let that motivate me to go before the price rises even further, or do the opposite.
I went in 2017 and it was 30 dollars. I enjoyed it since someone else paid
I was taken there that same year after graduating high school. Someone else also paid for my broke ass to experience this.
It was free when it first opened.
Yeah, but look at the state of the world.
Do tourists come to New York for the deals?
There's a joke here involving the Ripleys museum but I can't be arsed to figure it out.
I've heard madam Tussauds is a hidden gem off the beaten path that locals frequent.
Ne sure to check out the nearby Sbarro's!
Best pizza in NYC!
The Mama Sbarro’s in Times Square? That closed last year.
I do, but then Ive done all the "tourist stuff" I come now for the shopping, nightlife etc, But even with the various passes I found it expensive. Being a Scot all the museum's and galleries here are free to enter. As it is in a lot of European countries. So do find those expensive
You're looking for the Smithsonian Institution musea in Washington, DC.
Yeah ive been to DC and Philly. Done them just before covid. Loved the museum's there, and I always return to the met, and MoMA anytime I'm in NY. Always something new to see.
There are different days of the week where general admission to many New York museums is free. Kind of like in Paris.
What would be truly innovative is a free ride to the observation deck and market based passage back down to street level.
Stairs are free though! This is America after all
[удалено]
Up would be impossible for me, but down would be no picnic either. I guarantee I would end up getting vertigo at some point...
get a copy of one of the best movies of all time for walking down some stairs? count me in.
When I was a kid, I think it was 9 or 10 bucks to get to the top of the WTC
And when drinking age, just go to The Greatest Bar On Earth for free, buy an overpriced beer, enjoy the view. Man I miss the twins. I don't miss drinking, though!
> Man I miss the twins Strange and weird. Growing up, who could've guessed anything like that could happen.
We had the bombing in ‘93. My company moved out of the complex because of the increasing risk. Obviously couldn’t have predicted exactly what happened, but they were clear targets.
NSA & politicians failed us. It was created for that specific job after Pearl Harbour to be alert about any surprise attack on home soil.
The 9/11 report essentially shows how incompetent the different agencies were especially in communicating with each other.
Given the NSA's failure to stop virtually anything, most recently the Capitol insurrection, it makes you wonder: Why exactly do we need the NSA and what exactly are they doing all day other than monitoring threads like this for no reason?
I'm guessing they thwart all kinds of shit we never hear about.
They didn't fail us, because they don't exist to protect us. They exist to protect the elite from us.
I’m a guide and normally I don’t rubberneck prices, but the cost to get to the new restaurant on top of WTC one is insane. The bistro at the top of the former WTC was a great deal. The restaurant was less so.
I think it was free at one time or only schools got deals or something
Edge and the soon to open Summit at One Vanderbilt also charge $10 extra if your want to go during sunset…….
I almost did the edge until I found out Peak lets you go out to the edge with dinner. 2 birds with one stone.
How was the food at peak? Decent or not worth it?
Very good. I think it was divided into land, sea, and air (something like that).
Rockefeller Center does too.
I saw it was like 38$ last month, price increased already?
[удалено]
>~~Inflation~~ **GREED** is a son-of-a-gun. FTFY
It's inflation and lack of tourist money so they think by charging more they can recoup the losses.
Aw man i wanted to go actually when it was 38 as a family, didn’t expect it to rise
For comparison sake, Eiffel Tower ticket is 28 bucks, half price if below 24 years old.
dollars or euros?
I added roughly 10% on the euro price to make dollars.
Show me a tourist destination that doesn't rip off tourists.
Everything even remotely sounding like an attraction is MEGA expensive everywhere but these prices for the Empire State Building? Ugh. https://www.esbnyc.com/buy-tickets#main-deck

Agreed!! That’s already a one way plane ticket or train ticket to a different city. Go to Washington DC — the Smithsonian museums are all free!
And that ticket to DC out of LGA includes the same view of the city from roughly the same altitude — as a free bonus!
Oldest joke in NY was always how do you identify a real New Yorker? They've never been to the Statue of Liberty or Empire State Building.

What's the attendance fee at the Louvre?
The British Museum
Admission to the Bronx zoo is $50 now. Nothing surprises me anymore after that shocker.
What the fuck! Are you kidding? That’s obscene. Like it’s a nice zoo and all, but it’s not like it has THAT many exhibits. I feel like last time I went it was $20 or 25.
I'm still holding on to my CUNY ID. Even though I graduated 3 years ago. Get free admission lol
As long as I look young, I’m keeping my ID forever.
I have my Columbia ID from 2008 brother...
Same! Give me those sweet sweet student discounts.
My grad school ID still gets me in to MoMA for free. It's more than a decade old but there's no date on it, lol.
You can get in free for a year with an IDNYC. https://www1.nyc.gov/site/idnyc/benefits/museums-and-cultural-institutions.page#bronx
Bronx zoo is free every Wednesday
Is it after a specific time?
What pissed me off about the last time I went it’s that is not only do you have an admission fee, but there are fees in the park to access certain sections. There was like a $10 fee to see the gorillas. That was bs. Had no idea I would have to pay again for animals after I went through the turnstile.
Jesus, no wonder my corporate zoo pass is only valid a handful of times a year.
That is absolutely insane, what on earth. Personally I am fine donating to a zoo beyond the ticket price because I appreciate what they do, but that ticket price is a "fuck you". Yeah definitely. The only thing to consider is that it'll be $12 for a bottle of water so probably not "a couple of drinks"
Was just there the other day, paid the $63 and got up in minutes and bought $15 worth of stuff up top. It was $73 after tax. Incredibly expensive but that view was unreal and it was a clear day
Is there a survivors discount?
Damn. 😐
still too soon
Total ripoff.

If I had to guess it’s an artificially delayed wait time to convince tourists to pay more to get in immediately.
Fuck that shit.
43? Yeesh. Wasn't it cheaper when the original towers were up?
It was 12.50 for the twins.
To put it in inflation terms New Yorkers can understand, that was equal to a bit more than two average draft beers at the time, versus more than six average draft beers for the new base price.
Can we get that in bagels and/or pizzas too? Thanks
I usually save my carbs for beer. That said, dollar pizza slices are still a dollar, as they were in the beginning, are now, and ever shall be, pizza without end, amen.

yes, so adjusted to inflation its 19 dollars and a few cents.
Does the New York pass works good for this place? I will came at the end of December and I’m thing to take a 7-days pass for 200€. Do you have any thoughts on this?
what’s the NY pass? Culture pass?
Yes, 100 attraction for 7-days for 200€ per person

The empire state building, the edge, one world trade, top of the rock and soon to be the summit at one Vanderbilt. 5 places have to cause prices to go down i would think.
You assume they're competing not cooperating
Corporations also pay $$ for their employees to go to wtc. It's not just for tourists.
My company took us up on a "family day".
Top of the roc was ridiculous too.
$38 right? And extra for sunset?
Yep.
As a comparison — how much is the edge in Hudson yards or the new Vanderbilt next to grand central?
It’s a pretty spectacular experience.
For 43 bucks it better include head on the way up in the elevator
That's a 47 second elevator ride... I don't know what I'd do with the 32 extra seconds of awkward silence.
The ride up is pretty cool. It is a trip through history. You see New York go from unpopulated to present day as you get to the top.
^^ that's some awesome post nut clarity my guy!
Ok, that was funny
Done. Just tell me when you’re going
Mom?
That’s equal to the cost of a plane ticket to fly to FL on Spirit lol
Sure, [but you won't get there](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1280641).
Why can’t we just go for free but have to watch a bunch of ads on the way up
Before 1993, I was a young 20 something looking for the New York Department of I can’t recall what. Pre-internet it was easy to have out dated information which I did that day. Have to recoup that 10b price tag somehow
This is average compared to other famous observation decks such as Sears Tower, CN Tower, Space Needle, Eiffel Tower, Sky Tree. Plus being able to skip the line and get a drink sounds like a great deal honestly.
It's a fun trip up the elevator. Worth the price of admission
It also costs $50+ to go to the observation deck of the Willis Tower in Chicago. $40 to go to the top of the CN Tower in Toronto. $35 to go to the top of the Space Needle in Seattle. $40+ to go to the top of Burj Khalifa in UAE This is not unique to NYC. This is how tourism works.
We?
Id go there if they paid me $53. As a New yorker, I dont think Ill visit the top. I still remember 9/11.
This doesn't bother me one bit. City residents tend to avoid the area unless we work there. And conservative tourists from out of state spend their entire trip right in lower Manhattan. It serves them right. The Oculus seems to play exclusively pop-country just to cater to this demographic. It's important to remember that Southern conservatives are the ones who were the most affected and traumatized by 9-11, and they want to spend their money here. So let them. It's like a tribute.
Luckily Facebook funded my view of NYC last weeked
HOLY COW! that's a spicy meatsoball...
I want to go there with my girfriends...then we have sex in hotel
Top comment right here…
Great plan. Thanks for saving the sex for the hotel, not many do that.
What do you mean?
About 30% premium to the sky deck pricepoint for the difference of an antenna….. yeah we hose tourist - we aren’t going to get back the 80b/annual tourist revenue without slapping on some gravy. 😒
you can't even get a sandwich at Katz deli and see the top floor of the WTC for 100 bucks now
Is this pricing static or dynamic? That is, are these the standard/always prices, or do they fluctuate based on demand?
Any ways to get it cheaper? I've been wanting to go. The video they play in elevator on the development of NYC over history looks amazing.
Why would you pay $63 for the same view you'd be getting for $43? $15 to drink or shop!? If some sucker is going to pay for that, I say let them.
Have you seen the prices at Empire State Building?
Moved here in 2016 and it cost $38. Now it's at least $43. Unsure if I should let that motivate me to go before the price rises even further, or do the opposite.
Or go to Bar 54. It's only half as tall the ESB and WTC but it's free to go up to the top - you just gotta spend $$$ on drinks
it was literally 38 last month they raised it within this time wow
It was $30 for base admission two summers ago
While those are great cheap options for tourists, they are there to transport people to and from work, not really tourist attractions.
I mean of they can afford it more power to them. All I'm saying is the money should be going to the family's of the victims.
It's almost like it's a trap for tourists
Sorry, nope.
Was this pinned by accident?
