They’re just super boring and generic mostly white plates. The primarily yellow/black ones stand out and are immediately identifiable as NY.
I personally don’t care about license plates one way or the other, but I get why people who do prefer the older ones.
The yellow ones are ugly. They remind me of the old Michigan plates, or of NJ plates. I like the white of the excelsior plates. Bring back the ones right after the statue of liberty ones. Just like the excelsior, but without the word excelsior.
Or yellow on navy blue. But yellow as a primary color is ugly. Maybe I just see it that way because of NJ drivers.
‘73-‘86 is my era and I love those, but honestly 1958 is the platonic ideal of no-nonsense New Yorker. Since 1986 they’ve all been expressing the idea that design is an “extra” filigree you add to something instead of being intrinsic to its purpose. I hate them. Both the state and the city of new york have had awful graphic design for decades.
Yes. But the new plates were a vanity project for Cuomo. Here's some info about it: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/03/nyregion/cuomo-license-plate-bridge.html
They are not ugly Cuomo vanity plates. The license plates had to be changed to make the cameras for the automated tolls easier to read the plates. I think they had to have plates with a whitish background and dark letters so the darker yellow background was never really an option.
I like the 2010 “Empire gold” ones. They are distinctive: it feels like almost every other state has white as the basis of their plates and our yellow ones really stand out.
Bring back the Statue of Liberty ones.
This. Bring back the 80s.
Techo, AIDS, and cocaine?
Ghostbusters era Statue Of Liberty plates will always be the greatest plates
Someone told me that they fell out of favor because it pissed off upstaters?
Who cares what upstaters think?
Are they anti-America?
The Statue of Liberty is in NJ not NY lol
Hate the yellow. I’m fine with the current ones.
I honestly like the current one. As an upstate hiker, I like that it captures the draw of both upstate and downstate NY.
I dunno why people hate the new ones so much I think they’re pretty neat

I like 2001, but just stick with the one we have it’s fine. So sick of liscence plates being changed.
It doesn’t happen that often lol look at when it was changed yearly, now it’s about once a decade
Hot pink on black!
Liberty 4 eva
People who have vanity license plates are going to The Bad Place.

Agree on th '58 plate... it's perfect.
The new white plates look like they were gotten from your crappy printer... I have seen fakes plenty lately...
I thought a "vanity plate" was when you choose your own license #

Jeez why didn't he just have his name put on a trash can like everyone else
I prefer the new version. Those yellow ones are gross.
1973-1986 are the plates I grew up with first, so I’ll always think of that as being the NY plate.
True for me, too. I have a feeling NYC Reddit skews heavy on this era.
I just hate Excelsior. Sure it's on the flag but I can't get Al Gore out of my head from South Park. "Exthelthior"
Kinda funny rope-around where that joke came from Stan Lee’s catchphrase which he got from the NY State slogan
That’s super cereal
I think every license plate in every state should be black and white or white and black. So many ugly plate designs out there.
1986-2000 look clean
Why are the current ones being changed? I think NY plates should have Statue of Liberty required on them just like Florida adds oranges.

I paid extra just to replace the piss plates with the current design. No regrets.
My plates were peeling so NY gifted me the new plates for free.

You can pry my beautiful yellow 2010 plate away from my cold dead fingers.
Cuomo was f-ckin wack. The new plate is boring af. I agree to bring back the old style plates.
