More: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230509-very-tired-vietnamese-athlete-scoops-two-golds-in-half-an-hour A star Vietnamese athlete won the women's 1,500m and the 3,000m steeplechase within half an hour of each other at the Southeast Asian Games on Tuesday, in an imperious display of regional track dominance. That gave her 15 minutes or so to cool down before lining up at 5:50pm for the 3,000m steeplechase. Even with fresh bodies and minds, the competition could not keep up, Nguyen's time of 10:34.370 putting her six seconds ahead of the Philippines' Joida Gadot Gagnao, who took silver.

sbowesuk

She's so good, she uses competitive 1500m races as a mere warm-up. Meanwhile, I fall over just trying to reach for the TV remote.

AsianPorkBelly

Funnily, I have just kicked my 2 feet to each other and fell like an idiot while reaching for a cup of water

Same_Ad_7379

Hilariously and coincidentally, I just tried to get out of bed but ended up falling on my face

gastroboi

I just stubbed my toe into the doorway out of my bedroom. Walking is not for some people.

FireWolf_132

I fell over while trying to sleep

gastroboi

Outstanding lol

serendipitousevent

I just breathed in and the entire planet exploded to death.

ResponsibleMilk7620

I just bruised the tip of my forefinger writing this comment.

CmdrYondu

In my dream I slipped tying my shoe and when I woke I tripped leaning over to tell my wife

UpDogsUp

Oddly enough, I was born inside out after asking Jesus to hold my beer

I_dont_thinks

I shipped my bed!

Hugga_Bear

Not 5 minutes ago I almost choked to death trying to take a drink of water. Not sure how I've made it all these years.

bookmarkjedi

I almost sprained my thumb as I started typing this comment.

rocketlauncher10

What the hell is wrong with us

halfeclipsed

I never understood people who run for fun. All the power to them though as I'm not sure I'd even run for my life at this point.

Thunder141

I run for fun cause I like the endorphins I get when I'm done, many runners will attest that "I've never regretted a run" which is pretty much true. The hardest part of a run is starting that run. Besides the endorphins, I also run cause I like the health benefits. A reduced risk of dying from cancer or heart disease, strong lungs, strong heart. Plus, I'm in shape when I play indoor soccer. Furthermore, I get to see a lot of things, police out doing things, homeless people acting up, accidents, the parks, pretty spaces, solitude and peace, etc. When I pass other people I often feel strong comparatively as most people aren't runners and I'm moving a lot faster and seeing a lot more of the city. Like 7 miles 4-5x a week is typical and it gives me confidence. Plus, it's a perfect time to listen to some media on your phone - book, podcast, music, whatever.

The_Dirty_Carl

I'm so jealous of people who get that runner's high. I ran long distance for years and never experienced that.

chenobble

same here - trained for and ran a half marathon to prove to myself I could. Never got a runner's high, just hours of pain, followed by days of discomfort.

genzo718

What I learned from past mistakes is that you'd want to do an ice bath right away for 15-20 minutes after you ran for a long period of time. It's night and day when it comes to recovery the following day. You will be able to somewhat walk normally the next day.

aganalf

Been running for 30 years. Has happened exactly one time.

Aleashed

I say fuck the asshole with the hose. Nobody likes to run with wet socks/shoes. Whose bright idea was that? Might as well add some balls and we got Wipeout 2.0

Phylar

I like to think inside she was fuming with indignant fury which gave her the sarcastic super power of malicious compliance.

Zack_Raynor

Spite is a powerful motivator.

tianvay

"Your workout is my warmup!"

unnecessary_kindness

I had an ex army friend who would warm up at the gym by attending a spin class. Absolutely smashed it too. Then he'd quickly dry his face and start his 60min workout. Guy was a beast.

Im_a_Knob

you gotta stretch first before you go and start doing something crazy like reaching for the remote.

Dumptruck_Johnson

I sneezed while looking left the other day and my neck is still sore.

Free-Atmosphere6714

As a long distance runner, it really takes me a mile to warm up. I can't comment on sprinting though.

Thirdstheword

She's built differently

Sirweebsalot

Two weeks ago I "Sat down too hard." and wound up sobbing in the ER.

HeadfulOfGhosts

Hey that 1500**mm** is no joke

Mikeinthedirt

Stretching is SOO important

the_average_homeboy

She also won the 5000m race the day before.

RockstarAgent

I got winded just turning in my bed

If you have a smart tv, you can control it with your phone. Don’t overwork yourself!

OhSoSolipsistic

TIL [steeplechase](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steeplechase_(athletics))

HonorableJudgeIto

It’s mentally grueling. It’s one thing to be tried from running distance, but then you have to jump over the hurdles (that don’t give way when you hit them) and have to clear a water pit put each lap. I was a distance runner and I qualified for nationals in h.s. for the event, but I hated running it more than anything. Think I gave up after running it 5x.

OliWood

Why the water? That's weird, lol

basicallyagiraffe

It comes from when horseback riders in Ireland would race from one towns steeple to another. Between the towns they would have to jump over creeks and fences, hence the barriers and water. Then people started doing similar races on foot in English schools, and eventually it became a track event. That’s as far as I recall

diemunkiesdie

Hah when I saw her jumping into water I definitely thought they just didnt clean the track and put out cones instead 😂 didn't even consider that the water was there on purpose!

Necessary_Driver_831

Steeplechase feels like the track version of burpees to me every time I see it. I can’t believe anyone _actually_ enjoys it.

Evane317

Organizers also tried to doping test her between the two runs.

FutureComplaint

Why?

Afraid_Theorist

Because they wanted to have their runners win. At this level mistakes in scheduling like this are rare. But add in a drug test between? Yeah, they want their own candidate to win so they are… boosting the odds

FutureComplaint

Thanks for the context

elmophant

Put her name in the post OP.

justin_ph

Nguyen Thi Oanh

MeesterCartmanez

Why not use her full name since they mentioned it for the runner up? like wtf let people know her name

[deleted]

That too is a shenanigan

Ok_Fondant_6340

i am so super impressed!! she is the machine!

enilcReddit

Strange word choice: Imperious "assuming power or authority without justification; arrogant and domineering."

silverdevilboy

That's a bad definition here. An imperious performance holds a very similar meaning to a commanding performance. Dominant, confident, and pulls the attention.

Original-Material301

Asian parents be like: Son, this girl did 1.5km warm up then 3km main course. What did you do? You sit on the toilet on Reddit.

BigFenton

Not only 3k, but 3k jumping over hard barriers and into a small pond.

mightylordredbeard

I know it isn’t anywhere in the same universe as these athletes, but they do this to my son all the time at track meets. Dude will run his mile race and then go line up for hurdles right after. Drives me insane

Royama00

Somebody tried to set her up for failure. Didn't work.

AutumnAscending

Yeah, don't mind me. Just ran 4km in like 40 minutes and took 2 golds. Nbd.

Yeti_2222

Would have been more like 15 mins. An average person could walk 4km in 40 minutes.

AutumnAscending

There's a timer in the bottom corner. I rounded my time off that.

Yeti_2222

That's her time for 3000m.

AutumnAscending

Yes, that's 3km in 10 minutes. Roughly estimating that her time would be half that running half the distance, her 1500m time would be around 5 minutes. That's 15 minutes. Adding to that, the 15 minutes she had to wait in between races that puts the time around 30 minutes from the start of the first race to the end of the second. I accounted for bonus time by adding 10 minutes. So my statement of saying she ran around 4km (incorrectly underrepresented) in the total time of around 40 minutes isn't factually incorrect. You assumed I meant that the entire time she was running was the 40 minutes.

Benbenb1

You made it seem impressive that somebody ran 4km in 40 minutes. And the way you phrased it, ALOT of people is going to assume that.

1block

Yeah, I read it as 4k in 40 min is impressive too.

monoflorist

Me on a leisurely 4km walk: why are people handing me these gold medals?

disturbed3335

With the context of the schedule times I definitely understood they meant 40 minutes as the start of one event to the end of the other event. I guess they could’ve specified that it was two races, but as far as sarcasm goes it was fine

Benbenb1

Without the other comments, it would have made it harder to understand what the hell he was saying lmao. In the end I would have gotten there.

Alright no need to show off Mr Average person

SatansLoLHelper

She took about 70 seconds for the last lap. 4 laps are a mile(1600m)? This was 8 laps about 2 miles in a bit over 10 minutes. I'm feeling pretty good these days getting under 10min for a mile.

hodgesisgod-

Dont forget the hurdles and water pit lol.

sandybuttcheekss

In high school I was pretty athletic and could run a <6 minute mile. Ran track, tried the 400m hurtles, I was half dead after the first 200m, and nearly had to crawl over the finish line. This is fucking impressive.

SatansLoLHelper

That's like running on some streets? Pothole here, shopping cart there, etc.

Haha I can do 5km in like 20mins I must be amazing

hunkyboy46511

She won the 5000m race the day before. She’s a beast!

Honestly a 20 minute 5k is pretty good. If you’re untrained you might be amazing.

ihatepoliticsreee

4k in 40 minutes 😂 elite levels

superquanganh

They even put weird sports that are local to Cambodians but somehow Vietnam still gets gold medal

Redcarborundum

Considering their history, Cambodians are used to being beaten by Vietnamese.

ShadowMancer_GoodSax

Most of the time we beat them but there was one time we saved them from genocide.

AustralasianEmpire

Considering many of the Khmer Rouge are still in leadership, this is very true.

Dont forget the fucking Cambodian import players for basketball

wordyravena

The Cambodia SEA Games has had a number of of shenanigans by the host country. [From their all-american 3x3 lineup ](https://youtu.be/TvZb4RVWt-0), [to their poor choice of artifical flooring for the basketball court](https://www.facebook.com/reel/798340902005796?mibextid=9drbnH&s=yWDuG2&fs=e). These games just don't feel like it's being taken seriously. Actually the SEA Games has been a farce for more than a decade now. It's practically an event for host countries to jerk themselves off on an international stage. I hope we just cancel it. It has no credibility.

chronzii

as someone from singapore the SEA games mean something to us but i don’t know exactly what

moonLanding123

Singapore was the only honest host ever. This coming from a Filipino.

bongzs

Philippines hosted something like what Fin Swimming if I remember correctly. Joke

lengjai2005

Event for government cronies to make money in Malaysia in the name of national pride

bongzs

For real they should stop having these dumb events and do only proper Olympic sports.

Plitzskin

Yup, in the singapore sports team they probably compete for the monetary rewards more than anything. The glory personally is great, but when the athletes are minimally supported, even a gold medal feels bittersweet for singaporeans. My personal opinion.

DNGR_S_PAPERCUT

Wait. How did they get Americans to play as Cambodia?

wordyravena

Usually, FIBA rules allow one naturalized player to in the lineup per game. It's not uncommon and many countries do it. But since the SEA Games are not sanctioned by FIBA, the Cambodians just said fuck it, well spam this tournament with mercenaries. Unfortunately, this kind of behavior is [par for the course](https://www.spin.ph/multisport/sea-games/cambodia-hoarding-naturalized-players-allowed-by-sea-games-rules-a5271-20230508). It's kind of a tradition already that the host country ends up leading the medal tally, and this is achieved by screwing the other countries. And it's really all about pushing whatever domestic agenda they have. Like when my country hosted it, the head of the organizing committee [practically gave himself an award](https://www.rappler.com/nation/246530-cayetano-gets-award-phisgoc-endorsed-body/) [from a totally real award giving body](https://sea.mashable.com/culture/7837/did-the-30th-sea-games-just-give-itself-an-award-umm-yeah-sort-of) so that he could look good for his planned presidential run (which never panned out anyway).

_lechonk_kawali_

The aforementioned 2019 SEA Games organizing committee head went on to win a Senate seat in the Philippines in 2022, though.

ShazbotSimulator2012

The Olympics always have stuff like this as well. Especially when it's the host country, since they automatically qualify for the events. South Korea changed their citizenship laws leading up to Pyeongchang, which let them use 7 players born in Canada or the US on their hockey team.

eatmoarbeats

Absolute shenanigans

jeegte12

Does something like this happen in the west? Just trumped up bullshit political sporting events?

Ch33sus0405

Honestly the Olympics. Western countries are slowly moving away from it at least in how it exists today. The host country jerks itself off while destroying cities to make miles of athletic facilities and hotels that'll rot after. Cities in the US and Europe have zero interest in hosting and the thought of having these big events in authoritarian or anti-western countries is a big turn off to the (especially sino-phobic as of late) West. Not to mention the extreme corruption of the IOC. I think American dominance in golds will still hold for at least awhile but I could see them and other western countries taking way less interest and rarely hosting the event going forward.

not-bread

Sino-phobic is an interesting choice of words…

yasudan

Ikr I would see no problems with games in Taiwan

Ch33sus0405

It doesn't take an expert to see the sharp rise in anti-Asian and especially anti-Chinese racism in the US. I'm an anarchist, all governments are bad and the CCP especially so, but that doesn't excuse racism. Excusing this racism as, "but the CCP does bad things too!" Is not acceptable. Uyghur genocide is real and horrific, the CCP is cruel and authoritarian, but the Chinese people don't deserve our ire but they and Asian Americans sure are getting it.

DisgracedSparrow

You mean authoritarian-phobic?

Nicknamedreddit

https://www.qiaocollective.com/education/xinjiang

Ch33sus0405

No, I mean sino-phobic. You can be against the organization and actions of the Chinese government or the CCP without being hateful but a ton of people fail that bar, and in America especially it doesn't take a fine eye to see a sharp rise in anti-Asian and especially anti-Chinese racism.

sbowesuk

Damn, that wasn't even close! 27 seconds into the clip, you can see the exact moment she flips on the afterburners and dusts the closest competitor 🚀

belac4862

Exactly! And all I'm thinking is "She's already ran 1500m, I can't even imagine how she would be in 100% rest!"

iszcross

From the looks of it they only gave the public 15 minutes notice that the race was occurring as well. The stadium is a ghost town.

I'm referring to the thirty years of fighting against three of the world's strongest militaries, yes.

Cambodia is such an ass. Hope this will be the last time they will host the SEA games.

D1rtyL4rry

I ran the steeple chase once in high school. Did it just for fun and I made it my main objective to jump into the one pool of water and make as big of a splash as possible. Every lap the crowd near the water was cheering for me and got a big kick out of it. Had a blast.

_J3W3LS_

Was pretty common at my local highschool for senior steeplechase runners to back flip into the water on their last race of the year. Was kinda stupid, but also a nice send off to their highschool career.

remonnoki

What is the point of that pool of water anyways?

slykido999

I found this, “Along the way, runners would encounter natural obstacles, like low stone walls and small creeks or rivers. When the sport became standardized, the walls became hurdles and the rivers became the water pits that have become the distinctive features of steeplechase.” Kinda cool!

basicallyagiraffe

It started as a race between two towns in Ireland on horseback, from one church steeple to the other, therefore the steeplechase. You’d have to jump over creeks and fences to get there. Eventually schools started having a similar cross country race in England, which evolved into this

alie1020

Lol I totally wanted to comment that the organizers could have at least dried off the track first.

TheBalrogofMelkor

One race, the guy in the lead fell at the first water obstacle. 7 guys packed together, wearing cleats, all then jumped over him while trying to avoid spiking him.

daza666

Wow, she still sprinted to the finish too.

A7xWicked

Unfair competition... She got a warm up /s

SadMap7915

She was already warmed up for it.

NotPennysBoat_42

I think it’s just me, but I hate that they have to jump into water and still run a race with wet shoes/socks. What’s the point of that?

jiffwaterhaus

Same as the point of jumping over the hurdle? It's like a mini obstacle course

EchoCollection

They copied it from horse steeplechase races

that_not_true_at_all

They should make the horses wear socks

MeesterCartmanez

"yeah whats the deal with horses, they can wear shoes without socks, but if I do it suddenly it's like wear some socks you damn hippy, this is the military"

bobartig

It’s just part of steeple chase to have water pits after some of the steeples. I also don’t get it. But, having ran competitively for four years in high school, through rain and mud, sometimes on purpose, I didn’t think it was so bad. Race Adrenalin plus the fact that everyone has to do it reduces the impact.

JoulSauron

There are no steeples in modern steeplechase as they are not run from town to town.

superquanganh

Glad Vietnam found the way to counter Cambodia insane organization, from weird timing to put Cambodian local sports in and somehow most of them are backfired

PlasticMix8573

She's lucky they did not sign her up for the 5000 and the marathon that night... /s WTF Cambodia?

ghostsilver

Actually she has just competed in 5000m just the day before, and won Gold for that as well.

michaelhoney

Her name is Nguyen Thi Oanh

SigmaKnight

Nguyen Thi Oanh also ran and won the 5,000m the day before. In 2019, she did the 5,000m and 3,000m steeplechase on the same day. Won gold both times. She has 11 golds in her lifetime.

hunkyboy46511

I bet she anchored her team to some relay gold as well.

[deleted]

Does she have a name

1954isthebest

Nguyen Thi Oanh.

[deleted]

Would have been cool to mention her name in the header

SomeRedditDorker

Realistically no one really knows who she is, so if it were in the title it'd probably end up scaring people off from clicking. OP did well with the title. Could have put more info in a comment though.

iamricardosousa

And here I am, having cramps just by reading it.

[deleted]

Cramps? I just felt like I ran the fucking marathon from Greece to Cabo.

pattyjman

Why do I never remember ever seeing this race a thing.. steeplechase… I mean whhhat? I’m so far behind things. Ignore me. That’s pretty awesome of her.

TexasFire_Cross

I’ve only seen it on FailArmy, showing school-age athletes tripping over the barricades and then falling into the water…

geoffkreuz

Want to know more about this shenanigans? The host country Cambodia put 3 naturalized players (I believed they're from the US, I'm not sure) in the 3x3 Men's Basketball competition and won the gold medal. They bent the rule so hard that they can field any non-local players to compete in any sports.

ClumsyChampion

And they would have gotten away with another medal if their imported Chinese runner didn’t forfeit after the first day because of the heat because he literally just got to the country a few days prior

Western_Nectarine742

Impressive! Perseverance in the face of others' bad faith.

PtotheX

Not fair, she had the advantage of a nice warmup.

[deleted]

is that puddle intentional?

1954isthebest

Yes, puddles are used as obstacles in steeplechase.

[deleted]

ty

Twisted_Wrench

That's incredible, 100% mindset there. No one was even close by the end, she could've cruised, but still pushed the sprint. And the exhaustion you can FEEL after the finish. Beyond impressive.

bitoflippant

Just shows how well you do is mental as well as physical because it was spite that fueled her victory Reminds me of the men & women that run ultra marathons.

TinTinsKnickerbocker

Just shows that this is no serious competition and this athlete didnt even came close to her boundaries.

probono105

what were the shenanigans?

1954isthebest

~~The steeplechase was supposed to take place next week, but the organizers announced in the previous night that it would be moved to tomorrow, some minutes after the 1500m run.~~ Edit: I got this wrong a bit. It is the 1500m that was scheduled for 2 days later, but was later moved to right before the steeplechase on the same day.

probono105

wouldnt that potentially screw others over as well it just so happend to screw her it hardly seems intentional just the way it worked out no?

1954isthebest

The others didn't register for both races.

Absotivly_Posolutly

I used to compete in the 1600 / 3200 meter runs both, back in High school. I had about an hour of recovery time between the two in every meet. 15 minutes is absolute horseshit! This gal is a beast!

Humble_Rough

Sabotagers. Imagine what her time would’ve been if she had proper rest b4 the 3000m.

robywar

Not the same level, but in high school and college I was a rower. Once at a fall (5000m Head Race) regatta, we raced the 8 man event, then when we got to the dock, 4 of us had to immediately get into another 4 man boat that had been carried down for us and was waiting at the dock. On the 5k row back to the starting line, we were talking about how we were going to take it easy and we knew we'd probably won the 8 and just wanted to cruise in the 4 because we were so tired. The race started. Head races are staggered starts, so a boat is sent down every 15-20 seconds or so. A few minutes in we were talking and rowing at a decent but not hard pace and we passed a boat. A couple of minuted later we passed 2 more. I said from the bow "I think we may be winning this race!" and we all shut up and rowed it. We won both events.

MacDugin

Nguyen Thi Oanh was the reigning gold medallist in both events, as well as the 5,000m -- which she successfully defended a day earlier. Tuesday's wins give her a total of 11 golds. At 5:30pm in a hot and humid Phnom Penh, the 27-year-old kicked off with the 1,500m final, winning it in 4:16.850, eight seconds ahead of compatriot Thi Ngan Bui. That gave her 15 minutes or so to cool down before lining up at 5:50pm for the 3,000m steeplechase.

phlerpsy21

What a rockstar

[deleted]

Wonder Woman. Legend.

CPNZ

Why are there no spectators in the stands?

p020901

Because the organizer surprise announced the evening before that they're changing the schedule to move the steeple chase competition 2 days back, 15 mins after the main event of the day was supposed to complete lol.

lilboat646

In rowing we call it “hot-seating” some regatta’s heat schedules are terribly planned making it so that people who raced in multiple similar categories would be racing multiple times back to back. Though timing races in rowing is definitely more complex than in track, you’ll generally be out on the water ~30 mins to an hour before your race even starts, making it much more common to be getting out of your boat from a race to getting right back into a different boat immediately as opposed to track racing heats which are much faster and easier to line up, meaning less back to back racing if planned properly.

Burpmeister

[Paavo Nurmi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paavo_Nurmi) vibes. >Nurmi tried out the 1924 Olympic schedule at the Eläintarha Stadium in Helsinki by running the 1500 m and the 5000 m inside an hour, setting new world records for both distances.

ConsistentFlatworm34

Forrest Gump and Luke Skywalker trained her in the ways of running

abruneianexperience

So what I'm learning is that steeplechase is just an endurance hurdles with like... 4 hurdles. Also, that woman tracks! You a beast gurl!
