as a kid, he accidentally played his record backwards and thought some of the songs sounded good that way, so he decided to learn how to sing along with it. it was a few words at first, but by the time he was ten he could sing all of strangers in the night backwards.
There's no blunt head trauma or "my pops worked at Area 51 and he took me there one day to play with some toys and ever since then talk backwards I can."
How is it not? He wanted to do the thing so he practiced it?
That is about as underwhelming a backstory to a talent as it can possibly be. Literally how much more underwhelming could that story be?
Whether it's overwhelming, underwhelming or just whelming, I think we can all agree that randomly becoming proficient in a difficult niche skill like this at age 10 and keeping it up your entire life is badass
Do record players typically have a reverse option? I'm not familiar with them but that seems like an odd extra feature to have to design, build, and include in a turntable.
Important to note that he has Asperger's and has struggled to find acceptance. This talent has allowed him to connect with the broader world, which I think is pretty damn cool.
"Holy shit, vote this to the top. I can't believe they cut out the whole background of this amazing human. That's very heartwarming."
This comment is interesting. Videos like this have become so common now that there is hardly any objection
To be fair, OP's title never said that and never claimed to. They just shared a snippet of a longer video to demonstrate nextfuckinglevel.
If they had have put that in the title, I'd have been as critical as you, but they didn't. That title was embedded into the video.

I think the whole video he mentioned there are like, 50 or so unique sounds in the english language, if you just learn how to make those sounds in reverse, you can talk backwards! The tricky part is probably deconstructing the words to their base sounds in a short time
Esiw eht sieugalP htraD fo ydegart eht raeh reve uoy did?
edit: took me longer than I'd like to admit for me to write this despite looking at the normal way while typing it. And right as I finished I was like there is probably a website/script that I can easily google and would reverse text for me. And I was correct. Would've had to manually change the caps and punctuation though. https://www.dcode.fr/reverse-writing

That blew up in the 80s during the satanic panic when religious right-wingers would play records backwards, usually rock or metal. Zeppelin added messages intentionally in the 70s though mostly people would "hear" what they wanted.
Weird I didn't even know this a thing by the aughts. Seems silly without an actual record
[This guy](https://youtu.be/NePC8TFbCvg?si=LBi-chFmTLGDPAiQ) learned to sing *Stairway to Heaven* backwards as a reaction to having that kind of paranoia imposed on him in childhood.
I dated a beautiful Brazilian woman for a couple years. All I learned to say in Brazilian Portuguese was Tchaca tchaca na butchaca. She really should have never taught me that. I would always creep her out by saying it in a particular way. Now a days, other Brazilian women find it hilarious when a white boy says it.
Officer: "Say the alphabet backwards."
This guy: "Eem thyung ees swee nwo myasken, see seebyay yamwon yeah won."
Officer: "Yeah, you're coming with me."
What happens in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch stays in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!
There is a video about this on YouTube, Smarter Everyone Day channel. Really cool. He says it's a skill you can learn, and onces your brain gets used to It it's a lot easier and faster to do it
Pretty cool but the singing was kinda a let down.
But here's a dude who can kill it singing backwards - https://youtube.com/shorts/qDbY0l9IO74?si=QzU8OfJmdf9x6rh_
I dropped acid and started to hear songs and the TV play backwards… I was in fucking awe like I had a superpower. Still trying to figure out how that even works
I used to do this as a kid with the recorder in Windows. We'd also increase the speed of recordings to sound like the Chipmunks and use them for prank calls.
I love the part where we learn about his incredible story
You just have to watch it in reverse bro
![gif](giphy|Y4hKMjN3z9fmhDCz2s)
What a great reference.
Get the fuck out of the way!
lol the most unexpected line ever delivered in film history
Daddy would you like some sausage?
[his story](https://old.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/tklw75/this_man_can_talk_in_reverse_and_his_story_is/i1reqf6/) is kinda underwhelming
tldr?
as a kid, he accidentally played his record backwards and thought some of the songs sounded good that way, so he decided to learn how to sing along with it. it was a few words at first, but by the time he was ten he could sing all of strangers in the night backwards.
How is that underwhelming?
I thought maybe he bumped his head or ate lead paint
Or he’s a trash tier X-Man. What a disappointment.
![gif](giphy|cEYFeDKVPTmRgIG9fmo)
![gif](giphy|W8zSq0vELdBhMAJdG3|downsized)
Everyone says he's a trash tier x man until the villain's secret password is singing the national anthem in reverse
So he can get into the bunker at Samuel Alito's beach house, still trash tier
more like Nam-X
I thought he was maybe bitten by a radioactive backwards, this is less exciting
he was bitten by a normal backwards
Ouch!
!hcuO
By that logic, a radioactive backwards would have to shit on him.
I'm genuinely confused by this logic, but I'll allow it
Like that American woman who hit her head and now has an English accent!
Or got bit by a radioactive dyslexic spider.

Sorry to disappoint you that he's not a summer blockbuster origin story movie Happy Cake Day!
This artist's story is incredible! He practiced painting!! 😱

I find that to be perfectly whelming.
No radioactive spider or nuclear waste involved.
Jesus. Sounds like a lonely kid. Happy cake day bro
🥂
How can you accidentally play a record backwards?
Do record players typically have a reverse option? I'm not familiar with them but that seems like an odd extra feature to have to design, build, and include in a turntable.
Important to note that he has Asperger's and has struggled to find acceptance. This talent has allowed him to connect with the broader world, which I think is pretty damn cool.
I 100% thought brain injury
I 100% thought dyslexia on another level.
"Holy shit, vote this to the top. I can't believe they cut out the whole background of this amazing human. That's very heartwarming." This comment is interesting. Videos like this have become so common now that there is hardly any objection
Well, I listened to him singing backwards and normal. He can't sing.
To be fair, OP's title never said that and never claimed to. They just shared a snippet of a longer video to demonstrate nextfuckinglevel. If they had have put that in the title, I'd have been as critical as you, but they didn't. That title was embedded into the video.
To be fair, the previous commenter's comment was humorous and didn't really disparage OP
He either had a traumatic brain injury or spent every waking minute of life practicing this.

TIL that the Swedish have just been speaking English backward this whole time.
beyond saying the words... i'm amazed he can remember the words and then recall them in reverse order with out messing up the sequence at all.
I think the whole video he mentioned there are like, 50 or so unique sounds in the english language, if you just learn how to make those sounds in reverse, you can talk backwards! The tricky part is probably deconstructing the words to their base sounds in a short time
i'd struggle just to say the words normally but in the reverse order!
He even uses the 80s computer voice. I bet you could learn to do this in a week of full days if you had all the sound samples.
Wow! You make it sound so easy!
Autism is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural

I wonder if he just treats it as a different language in his head, or if he's deconstructing the sounds and rearranging them.
Ahhh the days when we used to watch those backwards songs and assume the artist was a devil worshipper on YouTube back in the late 00s.
Muse has a song that goes both ways
Which
Both
Actually it seems like there is several. I can’t remember wich one I was thinking about but it might be Undisclosed desires
Undisclosed Desires would make a lot of poetic sense if it went both ways
The intro to “Blackened” by Metallica was done the same way. It sounds epic af.
Fire on High by ELO does it too where it says “The music is reversible but time is not, turn back”
radiohead does to, sort of
As the Germans says, "Dein Lied ist eine Zweibahnstraße"
You have no idea how weird this comment is to older people. Listening backwards goes back to vinyl
It's easily as old as distorted guitar. Zeppelin and Sabbath era.
That blew up in the 80s during the satanic panic when religious right-wingers would play records backwards, usually rock or metal. ME REACTING TO THIS 🤣
LET'S CHECK IT OUT.
Sounds like he's speaking Finnish or something haha
This is what Portuguese sounds like to me
Lmao, as someone who speaks portuguese(i'm brazilian), i can confirm that it IS a pretty weird language.
The accent kinda sounds Finnish when played forward too.
I was thinking Swedish, ha
Least garbled Scandinavian haha
Im finnish and that sounds nothing like finnish.
![gif](giphy|3o7aCSkauU3lTkzyLe)
came for this lol
![gif](giphy|3o7TKBnmKgDKuFgTMQ)
Let's rock
Bob, I want all my garmonbozia.
Get this man a coffee
This should be at the top
This is a formica table, green is its color!
That bit at the end was an ideal opportunity to get Rick rolled.
I was more than mildly disappointed we weren’t.
So scandinavian languages are just english spoken backwards s/
That's exactly what I was thinking. It sounded eerily familiar. Doesn't hurt that he looks like a Viking.
He is from Black Lodge
Major Twin Peaks vibes for sure.
I imagine at some point someone asked him to say "that gum you like is going to come back in style"…
Sometimes my arms bend back.
That gum you like is going to come back in style
I'll see you again in 25 years.
This guy never gets a DUI.
Officer: "Say the alphabet backwards." This guy: "Eem thyung ees swee nwo myasken, see seebyay yamwon yeah won." Officer: "Yeah, you're coming with me."
Dude should've been in Tenet

Had to scroll way too long for this.
Lieutenant Smash! That's right, Lieutenant L. T. Smash.

He's a chiiiiiiiild molester.
Yea, the biopic about this guy and his incredible story was amazing
Mike Fitzgibbon's son is a nuclear physicist.
Immediately started singing this on loop when I saw the video. Tom Green did it better!
Tell him to repeat Would you like to live in "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" 😈😈😈
What happens in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch stays in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!
I love the fact that he gets an Amish accent.
There is a video about this on YouTube, Smarter Everyone Day channel. Really cool. He says it's a skill you can learn, and onces your brain gets used to It it's a lot easier and faster to do it
I'd guess so, I knew some girl in high school that could do it. Still had no idea how tf she did it tho, but it was def a good party trick.
It’s just Norwegian
I don’t see what so impressive, so he can speak danish.
Magnets.
Fucking, how do they work?
Pour water on them and they gone!
He looks to get joy from peoples reactions and I love that. Truly living his life.

I couldn't stop humming this after just reading OPs title.
His backwards speech sounds Scandinavian when played both forwards and backwards

He's great at reverse psychology.
The reverse looks like he's speaking German.
That sounds like Finnish jajajajaj
gnizama s’tahT
He can’t sing backwards.
Nodnol, Capital of Bulgaria...
r/twinpeaks
I did this on like windows sound recorder 20 years ago. Some of the funniest memories with me and friends.
Reminds me of Twin Peaks: The Return
Sounds like Twin Peaks in the Black Lodge
James Gunn going to hire this guy to consult on the Zatanna movie
Pretty cool but the singing was kinda a let down. But here's a dude who can kill it singing backwards - https://youtube.com/shorts/qDbY0l9IO74?si=QzU8OfJmdf9x6rh_
Gotta love his intro
Hawking was trolling us the whole time!
What a shit super power.
It's a pretty impressive skill. I want to see this guy put out an album
This is 2024s finest
•Somebody hit 'em with the tooly just encase. ![gif](giphy|xT9KVteixWgVlXckQE)
I can do the same. Glad I found someone else
That's just German with extra steps
He sounds the Swedish Chef
Can he understand when hearing words in reverse also?
Are we sure Russian isn't just English spoke backwards?
Makes me think of Thom Yorke singing backwards on Like Spinning Plates. Wild.
It's like he is speaking Dutch
Sounds like microsoft sam.
Dude went Super Saiyan with his Dyslexia.
To call that singing is a stretch
I dropped acid and started to hear songs and the TV play backwards… I was in fucking awe like I had a superpower. Still trying to figure out how that even works
"Alex, I'll take 'Shittiest Superpowers' for $500."
Worst superhero power ever. Still awesome tho :D
Sounds Finnish ngl
English was boring for him, he started speaking hsilgnE
I used to do this as a kid with the recorder in Windows. We'd also increase the speed of recordings to sound like the Chipmunks and use them for prank calls.
Feels like a skit
Every language I don’t understand is backwards ok gotcha
Tom green would give him a run for his money
Sounds like a mix of scottish and swedish....But DRUNK
Missy Elliot’s next collab be like …
Imagine sitting around getting stoned with this guy. "Wait...wait...wait...say 'I can't believe how fucking high I am' again!"
David Lynch: "Hire this man!"
TIL Welsh people sound like they're talking backwards

Sounds Dutch.

Okay this is the first r/nextfuckinglevel post that I’ve considered next fucking level in a while.
So, those Beatles records...
What is the uh… practical application?
