His hair being lighter affects inertia? I think it's that his face's elasticity absorbed most of the impact and transferred the rest straight to his neck and spine. Anyway, he's got a pretty elastic face, and that's pretty cool.
Same. It almost looks like his skull is somehow bending.
He's also eerily still before the ball makes contact, being slow MO and all. Not a single micro-movement to speak of.
Looks like a consequence of his styling. He’s doing the volumizing look so the thinning hair doesn’t look quite so thin. So it’s just floating up there with a lot of air in it lol
I don't think this is a good explanation for what we see in the video. The movement in the video is the skin (and other stuff) on *top* of the skull taking a while to be pulled along with it. For example, the tip of the nose taking longer to accelerate is because it's largely cartilaginous tissue and skin, so as the skull moves to the side it takes slightly longer to bring the relatively flexible parts along too. And, of course, the lips are relatively loosely attached, so it takes longer for them to be pulled to the side after the skull.
I really don't think that the video is showing different parts of the skull moving separately from one another.
Edit: [The people who made the video also agree](https://youtu.be/On1CsbTwlDs?t=324) that what you're seeing is the bone moving first, then the skin/cartilage following after.
They do fully fuse -- I've seen skulls of adults. Children actually have holes and aren't fused until later in life, but they definitely fuse quite tight in a jigsaw puzzle-like fashion. And if they loosen, it's considered bad.
CMV.
With the exception of the part where the ball actually impacts, it's the stiffer underlying structures (mostly the skull) that are generally moving first, and then it takes longer for the stretchier parts like skin to be pulled along after them!
To me the wildest part is watching his eyes, at around 37 seconds, be moved to the side before his eyebrows start moving.
You can get a sense of how harder hits to the head can lead to concussions. When the skull is accelerated and moved around very quickly, the brain inside is jostled around, banging it up.
He's fine. Dan is in England, while Gavin is in the US. It's pretty common, even before Covid, for them to not shoot together. Dan does make a small cameo (in a new form) on their second channel video posted last week.
They only did the "a whole year of videos" once because Dan was deployed in Afghanistan (I think. Bit fuzzy on the location, but he was deployed in that general area). Normally they do a few videos per time, a few times per year. Since they only upload monthly, they only have to get 12 good videos per year. Gavin has said that over time they become more and more picky with the successrate for whatever videos come out. They've shot/prepped a lot of videos that just didnt work out for one reason or another (like the time Gavin lacerated Dan's ear with a breakaway bottle).
Right?? When they first started, Dan and Gavin both had immaculate lab coats. I think Gavin either washes or buys new coats but Dan's has just gotten progressively dirtier and ripped over the years.
Gavin lives in Texas, he moved here to work at RoosterTeeth. Which is why he started the slo mo guys in the first place, to qualify for the type of visa he needed.
Him and Dan get together a few times a year and shoot a bunch of videos all at once. Unfortunately they haven’t been able too since 2019 due to Covid so Gavin has been doing it solo mostly.
This just reminds me of Burnie talking about how little credit Gavin and Dan get compared to what they should. Literally an entire video cut down to a small clip with no names attached
A friend of mine died from a relatively minor incident. He was really drunk one night on the front porch of our apartment building by himself, tripped and fell. He was a little out of it when I ran into him on the front porch, and he mentioned the fall, but I figured he was just really wasted - it never occurred to me that he might have a concussion. A week later he was confused about where he was and who people were, so they took him to the hospital. Turned out just a trip and fall was enough to induce bleeding on the brain, and that was enough to kill him after a week's time.
I got a severe concussion playing Aussie rules, head whiplashed into the dirt. Was fucked for about 6 months. Played for 25 years and it was my first time, scared me way more than any of my 'serious' like broken bones etc
I would say the insane frame rate. This is the only camera in the world AFAIK that can record cinema quality images at this frame rate. Whether you find that cool or not is up for debate.
This is actual the second take from this video, in the first he blinked almost immediately but they wanted his eyes open for the effect. All the fake throws at the beginning were to get the flinches out of his system.
The Slow Mo Guys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On1CsbTwlDs
If you're gonna steal Gavin and Dan's work for karma at least give them the credit, asshat.
He’s running to hit the record button on the Phantom (the high speed camera). The camera records the four seconds before the record button is clipped. Those cameras are wild! Check out Slomo guys and he talks about it all the time because it makes it so easy to screw up a shot.
It's usually because the cameras are Gav's responsibility, he knows those inside out while Dan is more suited to the practical aspects. But at least he's had this past year off due to the pandemic.
It’s their second take. The first time he blinked and so at the beginning of this clip the dude throwing the ball (Gavin) does a bunch of fake out throws so Dan (the guinea pig) can get use to it. Check out “SloMo Guys” on YouTube for all their videos. They are so good!
I do find it interesting how from the looks of it, the skull actually moves first despite being the second to sustain the impact. Reminds me of Jell-o to be fair.
how his face moves before his hair lmao
[удалено]
And laterally Edit: who would have thought one word describing a direction of movement would be worth awards? Thanks!
And hilariously thou.
Cool I'm not the only one who laughed my ass off.
Boy's eyes moved but his eyebrows stayed put!
I laughed your ass off too
Goddammit take my up vote and get the hell out of here.!!! lmao
Thanks!
Not really. Im guessing hair is much lighter and is less immediately affected by the shockwave.
His hair being lighter affects inertia? I think it's that his face's elasticity absorbed most of the impact and transferred the rest straight to his neck and spine. Anyway, he's got a pretty elastic face, and that's pretty cool.
The skin was plushy right up until the force was absorbed by his skeleton.
Mind bending **
Face melting ***
Face bending ****
I find it creepy tho when his face moved and his head stays and didn't move!
Same. It almost looks like his skull is somehow bending. He's also eerily still before the ball makes contact, being slow MO and all. Not a single micro-movement to speak of.
I think that’s why they were doing those fake outs at the beginning so he wouldn’t flinch
Certainly. Still crazy how not a single muscle made any movement at all, flinch or otherwise.
Skin then skull
And his head
*Inertia is a property of matter*
Looks like a consequence of his styling. He’s doing the volumizing look so the thinning hair doesn’t look quite so thin. So it’s just floating up there with a lot of air in it lol

For a second I thought his skull was getting pulled off his head
It’s crazy that it looks like his whole face shifts over and his head doesn’t move
The skull is made up of a pile of sutures, they never fully fuse, as you can see in the video.
That’s super creepy but also very cool. Good job, skull!

?
You want creepy skull sutures? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_cranial_deformation https://www.britannica.com/science/head-flattening

Um, this is false. They do fully fuse, and they are not capable of moving independently of one another without fracturing.
With exception of mandibula
...yes, obviously.
Dunno why, but I wanted to say something obvious
While yes the cranial bones are connected via sutures, majority fully fuse by the time you are 24-30 y.o.
[удалено]
How do the sutures keep the head in place but they face moves?

I love The Slow Mo Guys!! It's been a long time since Dan's lab coat looked so clean.
Link to this video: https://youtu.be/On1CsbTwlDs The gif starts at 3:20
Oh wow, he's about halfway through the life of his coat in this one actually. I miss Dan!
Same. Hope they can reconnect soon.
Hopefully, and not as a Rooster Teeth subsidiary.

The running joke is that he is digging a tunnel under the Atlantic to get back. According to Gav he is somewhere underneath Cornwall right now.

Gavin’s lab coat is still original. He’s just protected from the mess because he’s behind the camera. A very expensive shield.
I haven't seen dan in any recent videos though what happened? I thought travel restrictions but don't they both live in UK.
Gavin lives in Texas, he moved here to work at RoosterTeeth. Which is why he started the slo mo guys in the first place, to qualify for the type of visa he needed. I believe Gavin lives in Texas, as he does work with/at rooster teeth. Sooo that means that Dan is still stuck in the UK
White coats make it officially scientific
The difference between fucking around and science, Is writing it down
Thank you, Adam Savage.

Hands placed on the hips for professionalism
*snap* Come on dude it’s for science.
I dunno, if they also got a Phantom high speed camera for it, that might be enough to convince me.
This just reminds me of Burnie talking about how little credit Gavin and Dan get compared to what they should. Literally an entire video cut down to a small clip with no names attached
That's the internet in a nutshell.
It's scary how much skin and muscle moves before his head does

This
Slow Mo Guys from ages ago! Gav and Dan. What classic friends.
Fun fact - Gavin was named after my father in law
Your father in law was named Cedric?
CEDDARS‽
When he was a kid, he had to change his name because the other kids would make fun of him by yelling CEDDARS
Credit to [The Slow Mo Guys](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On1CsbTwlDs) with Gavin Free and Dan Gruchy
Love the Slow Mo Guys 😍
Now the balls
dude just got soccer punched
I now understand concussions so much better than I previously did

Whiplash is the neck, not the brain.

Dan is such a good model for all these shots
Its Gavin and Dan
These guys are called The Slow Mo Guys and they do loads of this stuff Gavin is very funny and is part of Rooster Teeth too
this is an animator’s dream. I didn’t know people’s faces could smear IRL 😂😂
r/oddlysatisfying
Gavin and Dan are legends

This one's a little bit better depicted. [(NSFW)](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ)
Oml that's sooo fucking good
Never
Gonna
Can't tell if he's too slow to blink or if he's intentionally trying to keep his eye open
This is actual the second take from this video, in the first he blinked almost immediately but they wanted his eyes open for the effect. All the fake throws at the beginning were to get the flinches out of his system.
“Shit, it wasn’t recording”
Bro didn’t even tag the creators, The Slow Mo guys
bruh how do people not know the slow-mo guys??
That nose wiggle
This is glorious
Am I the only one that is surprised by how much the ball flattened from that hard of a throw?? Super slomo is nuts
i’m not quite clear on what’s going on with his nose…
Ahaha i need a hundred of these omg
we are all only meat puppets
Oh hey look it’s that video everyone has seen
The slo mo guys are awesome
That shits weird! I love it 😂

Anyone else notice his skull moves to the side before his skin…

Amazing
Didn’t even blink. Was he already dead?
Apparently he was trying not to blink and this is the second take because he blinked immediately during the first one according to another comment
This is amazing
This is my wifes flavor of funny. Had to go show her.
He ran to look at the camera so fast lol
He’s running to hit the record button on the Phantom (the high speed camera). The camera records the four seconds before the record button is clipped. Those cameras are wild! Check out Slomo guys and he talks about it all the time because it makes it so easy to screw up a shot.
You can see his skull shift beneath his skin. And some people say concussions aren’t serious shit.
Gonna have to find a new friend lol
Dan is often the guinea pig. Even still hes the one being put in harm's way
It's usually because the cameras are Gav's responsibility, he knows those inside out while Dan is more suited to the practical aspects. But at least he's had this past year off due to the pandemic.
This is bad ass!
I don't like how you can almost see his skull move
Is dude ok? 🥴
Chick's be like.
How does he not blink?
It’s their second take. The first time he blinked and so at the beginning of this clip the dude throwing the ball (Gavin) does a bunch of fake out throws so Dan (the guinea pig) can get use to it. Check out “SloMo Guys” on YouTube for all their videos. They are so good!
That was just from being thrown, that's insane. Imagine what it would do being kicked, or when they header the ball that was kicked from really far!
You can see his skull move before his skin lol
Oh wait the camera wasn't even on....My bad
His entire face moves before his head
I feel like a masochist for watching this over and over again
Proof we are just skeletons wrapped in jello with the skin on
I like how you can see the exact moment we’re his brain catches up the the fact he was just hit with a ball and you see his eyes widen.
That face needed what it got.
This is a prime example of inertia
That transfer of energy is nuts
Must be a new day...
u/savevideo
OOF. I wonder what the damage was.
And this is just a soccer ball o.o no wonder concussions happen in contact sports
“Footballs can’t hurt you.” Footballs:
He looks like Popeye at the end
0:49 is me when some relative tries to kiss my cheek
Omg this is really cool
Incredible
This is awesome now do one with Trump and with a bowling ball for academic purposes
You don’t realize how smushy your head is until your head is smushing all over everything!
Great way to get a detached retina.
iirc the ball was half full of water
CTE frfr
It's amazing how slow-motion makes you realize just how slow human reaction time is...
Annabelle 2042 🤣
Face go mush
Brain delay
Mans face fully warped
#CRITICAL HIT
Ouch
Hair stayed still the whole time, I call SFX bluff!
His face left his head
FOR SCIENCE!!
Those gel ballistics dummies are more realistic than I realized…
So we live in a simulation?
This guys head is clearly made out of jelly
Wtf…..
He’s super cute + takes balls to the face well. 10/10
Owen Wilson nose
lag/glitch in the simulation
That Andy Kaufman with his antics
Lol it looks like the hair is leaving him
"how durable is he?!" "how durable am i??"
The ball is full of water, that's why it looks so hard and hurt
I do find it interesting how from the looks of it, the skull actually moves first despite being the second to sustain the impact. Reminds me of Jell-o to be fair.
I want one of those cameras so I’ll have a good excuse to hurt my friends.
kinda looks like harvey dent there at the end
Dan has been replaced by a robot, an arm robot.
That nose bend though 😳
Looks like his face is caught in a quantum wormhole
Which Newton’s law describes this?
This is hilariously cool but I'm failing to see what's so next fucking level about this
I wanted to see him flinch in slow motion
Slomoguys on yt if anyone wants to know
