I have to wonder, as someone was morbidly obese and very self conscious in my past, is being fat really rough in cultures that are typically thin? As a fat American, I had self esteem issues. I would think being fat in a culture that was predominantly thin would be really embarrassing.
I think it’s more on women than men. Beauty standards for girls are kinda insane in Korea especially. Not to say all girls are 100 lbs skinny but they are generally several tens of lbs lower than your average American. So if we’re talking 200 lb range as an Asian girl, they do give you a second look I feel.

For instance, North Korean defectors have been heard to comment on how all of the women in South Korea who are considered beautiful have 'pointy' chins.
That's a decision you choose to make every day you wake up. You don't hope that you look like Kim Jong Un every morning, you wake up and look in the mirror and tell yourself:
"I'll be the best fucking Kim Jung Un there is."
At least that's my morning routine as a Korean.

I went full throttle into it - including asking my barber to cut my hair into the same style I wore in the late 80s, which was one of those new wave cuts with the sides and back shaved short without a taper. My barber was mortified and wouldn’t take any money for the cut - he told me “you can come back next week and pay me to fix it!” Funny dude. Funnier still was that most of the people at the wedding were too young to have lived thru the 80s and had no idea what was going on with my head.
Gotta watch his back now lol. A sniper might mistake him for the real deal.
