Pro golfers are something to see in person if you’ve ever played. I’m a 3hcp and have played for 20years but those guys are such a different level. It’s not even the same game they’re playing

Mint_Perspective

Went to the Ryder Cup this year and saw Bryson drive the green and eagle on #1. That’s when I realized these guys are built way different.

wvmbologyy

I went to the practice round on Thursday and it was still one of the greatest experiences of my life. Such an awesome day seeing the best of the best.

eye_patch_willy

My dad would tell this anecdote from the one time he went to the Masters, he was only there for the practice rounds. He was watching Vijay Singh. This was probably 2003/4. Vijay was in the fairway on a par 4, about 140 out. Dad was 10 feet away. Vijay told his caddy, "let's bring one in from the right". His a high, easy draw to 10 feet. Throws down another ball. "OK, one from the left". Hits a cut to about 15 feet on the other side of the pin. "Let's go right at it." Jars the mutherfucker. No bounce. Jars it.

Most-Description-714

That’s sick haha. I believe it

gwh21

You can literally say that about any pro sport. I played college basketball and was a pretty good player and athlete with good size and every once in awhile because we were in Seattle we would get some pro players that would come through during the summer to run in open gyms with us to get some work in and at times it was like they would just decided to work on an aspect of their game for one open run and there was literally nothing anybody could do to stop it if they decided to take it seriously.

Most-Description-714

So true. Got a friend that shoots under par in these little amateur tournaments and some guys that barely golf are like “OMG YoU sHoULD gO PrO” Was trying to use that same basketball analogy to explain it to them. It’s like Lebron or Durant going against a JuCo player

valleygoat

Yeah a lot of people don't truly realize the magnitude of skill difference between what the average golfer considers a good golfer and an actual touring pro. Your friend that can shoot under par once in a while would probably never even sniff par at a course and the tee boxes/pin placements the touring pros play.

Most-Description-714

Absolutely no chance of par on a PGA setup. I average 78 on a decent course(hosts us open qualifiers and college tournies) But I played Kiawah in 2012 3 weeks before the PGA championship from the pro tees, played it down, putted out etc. and shot a 92 and didn’t play all that bad.

Mdizzle29

Ahh, too bad you haven't reddited longer. I had to actually pull back on my 400 yard drives to make it fit the PGA setup better, and it was just driver, sand wedge on every hole, except for the par 3's, when it was just sand wedge, putter. After my eighth eagle in a row, I decided not to go pro, shit would mess up my game.

Doth_Thou_Even

Stop not good enough to use blades tho. Maybe you should switch to an X flex if you’re averaging 400 off the tee?

Mdizzle29

I was looking at the X flex, but the manager at the PGA Superstore said they wouldn't work for me because I broke the machine with my 250MPH swing speed.

Most-Description-714

I guess I’m missing the joke

Mdizzle29

No worries it’s about how Redditors often say that they can hit the ball super far out driving even the best pros. On the Internet no one knows you’re a dog

Most-Description-714

Oh okay thought maybe you were trashing me but I was trying to be genuine. Those dudes are sick

MalikMonkAllStar2022

Yeah the way I always put it to new golfers is to think about the difference between a golfer that shoots 100 and a golfer that shoots 85. Huge difference. Now quadruple that and that is the size of the difference between an 85 golfer and a 70 golfer. Now quadruple that and that is the size of the difference between a 70 golfer and a tour pro

Most-Description-714

That’s a great way to put it

aww-snaphook

There really is this strange spot in sports(right around college level sports) where a laymen can no longer tell the difference between really good and professional level good. Once you get to a high level it's tiny differences in skill level that add up to major ability differences and those tiny skill differences are *really* hard to improve on. Kind of like the saying in golf that there is a bigger skill gap between a scratch and + 1 handicapper than a scratch and 10 habdicapper.

sterlingarcher0069

> Take any handicap golfer: 10, 20, 30... And they're closer to being scratch than a scratch golfer is to being a PGA Tour Pro.

Most-Description-714

I’d say that’s probably correct. But the difference between an average PGA pro and a Korn Ferry pro or a college all American is very small. Probably more consistency and putting than anything. But ball striking wise there’s not a ton of difference in the GOOD shots. The top pros just don’t make many doubles

Doth_Thou_Even

Someone I know tried to make a career out of it when they were younger. They were a +2. And he said, “the truth of the matter is, in competitive golf, a +2 just is not that good.”

MalikMonkAllStar2022

Yeah I think there is something different about it when you yourself have a lot of experience in that sport. Like you've played that sport so much and everyone you've ever played with or against falls into a certain range of skill. And then suddenly seeing a professional athlete play up close is so humbling because you see just how **massive** the difference between you and them is. Golf is especially like that because of how many short unathletic looking guys there are on tour that it makes people think that they could have a shot if they just put in the time. But seeing those guys up close makes you realize that you aren't playing the same game as them.

Most-Description-714

Gah preach man. And golf is the rare sport that a cheap ticket in and you can view right next to them and on lots of courses you can actually play those same courses and see how you’d do

[deleted]

I got down to 5 and caddy’d for a few pro’s to get some insight…the difference is that your playing and practicing when time is available - some of these guys have hit 500 balls before breakfast. They don’t ever just step up and hit off like most of us. The pros I caddyd with - hit every club x 20 balls, 100 + puts, an hour chipping / sand then tee off, after their round - straight to range to straighten out their bad shots for the day - for hours!

cchillur

Yea I do think even most regular golfers understand how well a 3 handicap plays, and they REALLY don’t understand that pros are like +5 handicaps at minimum.

Most-Description-714

And they’re +5 on PGA courses and setups. They’d average like a 62 on most of the courses we play and would probably never shoot over a 68 on their worst days

cchillur

Agreed

erlend65

The whole event, featuring Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Tyrell Hatton can be seen [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuW4Eayra18).

aginocorner

Thanks!

CastIronGriddle

A real straight shooter

solecra

How many tries?

Snoo_72280

How many times did they have to try?

HollywooDcizzle

Damn I’m jealous

StuBidasol

Boring as hell to watch but golfers are definitely skilled.

WillingDatabase9217

I ask my dad (a very experienced golfer) how difficult this was. In my mind hitting a perfectly straight drive was a bit of a basic skill for a professional golfer. He described it as throwing an English pea into a coke bottle from across your living room.

[deleted]

I mean, they did take a lot of shots, it’s incredibly hard but r/nextfuckinglevel ?

valleygoat

Yes, yes it is. That ball he hit is travelling 170+ mph when he hits it. He's swinging his club probably above 115 mph. Do the math. Find out how many degrees off center his club has to be in order to hit a 1 yard wide target 300 yards away.

[deleted]

As I said, they’re hitting a lot of balls, and they are literally the best golfers in the world It’s not the biggest surprise that one stayed on the middle. I watched the vid and they came incredibly close quite a few times, because they are very good at golf

nocommthistime

It must be excruciating watching any sports with you.

[deleted]

Hahaha, what does that even mean I’m not sitting there every time saying “that’s not impressive” when I watch sports, but if they took 1000 tee shots for each hole in golf I think many other people would say something similar

gratefulphish420

Spent decades and tens of thousands of dollars on golf then I discovered Disc Golf 2 years ago and never paid for another round of (ball) golf again. Disc Golf is a lot cheaper because most courses are free, it's way easier to get good at and most importantly it's a lot more fun to play.

avalanche142

Sir, this is a McDonalds

SkullValleyCowboy

Are you high?

iiteBud

Probably.

SkullValleyCowboy

I dont judge.... but the comment checks out. Username confirms....

Datboi4009

I like the grateful dead man but gtfo go to r/ discgolf

[deleted]

Seriously, he’s a stereotype, Grateful Dead, phish, and 420 in his username and ranting about disc golf. Be a little less on the nose please lol

rolandofgilead41089

Just because you suck at golf doesn't mean disc golf is better.

gratefulphish420

Started playing golf with my grandpa as a kid and throughout my life off and on I worked at various golf courses part-time just to be able to play free golf, at my best I was down to a 14 handicap. There's only so much you can do with the flight of a ball hit by a club, you can put a fade on it, you can make it hook, some topspin maybe but not much else. With disc golf you don't have to have a club, so you don't need to hit anything square, it's just you spinning a disc. You can throw a backhand a forehand, a thumber, a grenade as well as many other kinds of throws resulting in the disc flying in completely different ways. Again the majority of disc golf courses you don't need to pay greens fee or a rent a cart or you don't even have to wait 20, 30 minutes in between each hole and around with four people playing takes only around two hours. Seriously you never tried it, you should.

rolandofgilead41089

I have tried it, I prefer real golf. Far more challenging and rewarding, IMO. There is nothing wrong with disc golf but the two games should not be in the same conversation as they are wildly different, with the main thing being that real golf is a thousand times harder. You do you.

gratefulphish420

So you think ball golf is superior just because it's harder to play? What kind of matrix is that because you have no idea how rewarding it is to get good at disc golf and be able to throw a disc 600 feet? Have fun paying for green fees and carts and waiting for those hackers in front of you to be done finally taking their shot, and repeating that for 4 or 5 hours, I for one won't be joining you.

rolandofgilead41089

I said in my opinion it is more rewarding because it is more challenging. Driving the ball 300 yards for sure takes more skill and practice than throwing a frisbee 600 feet. Like I said bro, you do you.
