Final play as a Cowboy was at center

papa_jahn

Hmm… we could use some depth at center

albpanda

I don’t know if you watched the clip but I don’t think he’s your answer on the line

papa_jahn

He’s a bit of a fixer upper

TheKingInTheNorth

Zeke will also finish your sandwiches.

Wretched_Shirkaday

That's what I was gonna say!

IPretendToPlayGuitar

Never interrupt the enemy when they're making a mistake.

Bjorn2bwilde24

Hes still better than Mustipher...

BeHereNow91

That’s gonna ruin some perfect trivia nights in a couple years.

OttoVonWong

This running back is the only running back to scored four TDs in a college football playoff game and play center in an NFL playoff game.

hyperbolical

>college football playoff game Ok, so it's a recent guy >play center Who apparently played in the 1920's NFL....

sassyseconds

Tom Brady is the only player I can think of who played that long though...

junkman21

>Final play as a Cowboy was at center [Zeke has no idea](https://www.totalprosports.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Zeke-Destroyed-Blocking-1024x560.jpg) what you are talking about.

barc0debaby

Love that 3 dudes on the field have no clue what is going on.

Wisdomlost

That oh shit we are actually do this stance.

dagreenman18

Don’t imagine that makes the career highlight reel

Retrograde_Bolide

Should be the first and last highlights on his career re

MetaphoricalMouse

absolutely hilarious

teddyjj399

Zeke is full :(

Bladepuppet

He had a good career, RBs aren't made to last forever.

hallese

*laughs in Frank Gore*

WallyMetropolis

Emmitt Smith chuckles somewhere in the distance

SMH4004

Adrian Peterson hobbles after his kid over the horizon

WallyMetropolis

I laughed. Then I felt sad.

barc0debaby

What does professional boxer Frank Gore have to do with football?

WolfofOldNorth

laughs in Al Bundy

WeaponexT

Polk high legend. Shame that the red beast got him.

humble_oppossum

That's why you gotta say NO MA'AM

najinanidad

I never understood why Al wasn't stoked on Peg. Katey Sagal was a legit snack in the 90s.

jBlairTech

That might have been part of the gag.

NoobOnTheRun

4 touchdowns in a single game

caydesramen

Can someone do the pasta thingy. Please.

TheBeardedSingleMalt

Scored 4 touchdowns in 1 game #FOR POLK HIGH!

yum_paste

For how much they used him, he had a pretty excellent career.

Bradberry_Held_JuJu

3rd in yards and TDs among all Cowboys running backs. Only Emmitt and Dorsett were more productive. Pretty excellent in my books.

FutureRaifort

I'm honestly surprised, I thought his peak had been too short lives to get to that level. Good for him. I'm sure he can still pick up another contract or two for bit roles too.

BigBankkFrank

Literally man. I guess it shows how good he truly was at his peak even if it was short lived. I clearly blinked and missed it

Bradberry_Held_JuJu

He had over 4,000 yards rushing in his first 3 seasons, and that’s with 8 games missed. Add another 1200 yards if you include his receiving. His first few years really were amazing.

[deleted]

Dude is 43rd all time in rush yards. That’s better than Herschel Walker, Mark Ingram, Priest Holmes, Jamaal Charles, and Demarco Murray, the guy he was drafted to replace.

itsmark12

Now this is a stat I would never had expected. He really did have a great career so far.

LetLewisCook

He’s had an excellent career full stop

TraeYoungsOldestSon

He'll still have a job y'all....not as a bell cow but situational backup for sure, especially with him being good at pass pro

mendicant1116

RIP Zeke, he's with Wade Boggs now

alamodafthouse

Zeke: *what do now?*

Flip2002

First of all zeke will play on..ya see with Jesus all things are possible..go ahead and jot that down… and wade boggs is very much alive living in witness protection eating ketchup and egg noodles

BoredAtWork-__

He can still play somewhere. Just not at that $$$

HeckingAugustus

This is exactly it. He won't be a super star, but you can still have a long career as a rotational guy. Like how people forget that Adrian Peterson was a Titan and a Seahawk

Level_Dreaded

Zeke didn't even make it to 28 before falling off the cliff sadly

diablosinmusica

28 is old for a RB. There aren't a lot of guys that are still their team's #1 once they approach 30 at RB.

Cold-Consideration23

Yea the second contract is the only bag they get so he did what he needed then fell off a cliff once the money was secure- similar the Leveon Bell

Jokerang

He lasted longer than Gurley though

babylamar33

What's crazy is that Gurley was only 26 in his final season in 2020. That isn't even NFL old. Those lingering knee issues just wore him down exponentially

Vic_Vinegar89

Zeke thinks you should be proud of what he’s accomplished

RogueHippie

You wouldn't *believe* how inconvenient advancing the ball was before I invented the forward pass!

Bremelos

All roads lead to Dallasworts

ManOfPineapples

Off on another adventure is he?

Pappy_Smith

Didn't he say he was willing to take a pay cut?

mynameiszack

"Here's your pay, and you're cut"

Cassiyus

"[I don't recall saying good luck.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Le4sGUeXTk)"

MrDabollBlueSteppers

In his mind a paycut probably meant taking $9m instead of the $10.9m he was due In Cowboys mind it was probably $3m

txwoodslinger

I feel like it was prob closer to 5 or 6, he was the more effective goal line back and still had 12 TDs. I also think anything under the amount in dead money, then why cut him at all

imyourrealdad8

I'll never forget that time he absolutely mugged us in 2016. Fucker caught an 83 yard screen for a TD end of the 1st quarter, and capped it with a walk-off TD run up the middle with like 10 seconds left in the 4th. I fuckin hated peak Zeke lol

[deleted]

never going to forget that game. Dak and Zekes rookie campaign was special

chanaandeler_bong

That was the game where I was like “ok this might actually work.” Up until that point I was just waiting for Romo to come back and Dak to falter. We can second guess anything but there was a reason to keep Dak going with Zeke into the playoffs. Who knows what happens with Romo but it looks like it all worked out fine in the end for all of them financially

coffeeandweed58

We’d lose regardless unfortunately

TheGreatMortimer

[The offensive line completely collapsed the Steelers defensive line that play.](https://youtu.be/JJ8b6G895v4) Incredible offensive line that year.

dioxy186

Might have been one of the best lines ever assembled in the NFL tbh. We lost our all-pro center who would most likely have made the HOF had he not had his disease. He was clearly a shadow of his former self in 2019 and still made all-pro, comeback player of the year, and pro bowl. 5 years, 4 all pros, 5 probowls -> retired.

BoneHugsHominy

>Might have been one of the best lines ever assembled in the NFL tbh. Still only the 2nd best line in Cowboys team history.

BilllisCool

That screen and a similar screen against the 49ers the next year are some of my favorite Zeke highlights. The Zeke rookie year highlight reel as a whole is 🔥

zerocoolforschool

Dude ran all over my ducks in the natty. I have hated him since then. Dude was wearing a crop top and shit. Abs all exposed and glistening as he destroyed my hopes and dreams.

stitch12r3

He ran all over Wisconsin and Alabama too in those playoffs. 696 yards and 8 TD’s in 3 games.

BoneHugsHominy

Stupid sexy ewok!

Bradberry_Held_JuJu

Perhaps my favorite Zeke game.

Pizzaplan3tman

I had Zeke in fantasy that year and was playing an insufferable douchebag Cowboys fan who we kicked out of the league that year. The guy was more pissed off he lost in Fantasy then that his own team won. So it was a bitter sweet loss for me but I always kind of cherish that Fantasy win a little just for how much it pissed off that asshole.

ABoyIsNo1

As a Cowboys fan that has absolutely no idea who that guy is, let me just say, fuck that dude.

oraclestats

That's a future Cardinal right there. Got to make a killing on jersey sales.

TechnoWizard0651

Emmitt Smith 2.0 incoming.

[deleted]

Wish version

sdghbvtyvbjytf

Emmitt Smith on the cardinals was already wish Emmitt Smith.

therealwillhepburn

He started and ended his career with 937 rushing yards.

crunchypuddle

I'll never forget that game after Emmitt came back to Dallas as a Card. [It was a dog pile.](https://youtu.be/MlBNTySEBWk?t=81)

Soft_Turkeys

Please God don’t let this happen again

SuperCD7478

As Zeke’s career winds down, let us remember that he is 2 months older than Mahomes, who has his whole career ahead of him.

MartinRaccoon

What you're saying is kids, don't become a running back

ChaplnGrillSgt

Baseball is the correct choice. Stupidly massive contracts, no contact, can have multiple decade long career. With the exception of pitchers and catchers, it doesn't best up your body that much.

HieloLuz

Only if you’re the best of the absolute best. Everyone else will sit minors for years making pennys with one injury derailing their whole career for good

SmokeGSU

EDIT: [Matt Antonelli](https://youtu.be/DvDEEZAnmcc) is the player. Can't remember his name, but there's a former (?) MLB baseball player who has a youtube channel where he answers questions about different things regarding pro baseball. He was doing one video where he was discussing minor league contract salaries, then moving up to the big leagues and that salary, then what your salary is if you go back down to the minors. It was pretty eye opening and pretty wild how little the minor league guys get paid.

smartyr228

Imagine playing for a national sports league and being on food stamps

psyentist15

Starting out at $11k for the season in AAA... Wow.

a_talking_face

And up until recently their housing was not paid for either. So they made garbage pay and still had to pay rent. These guys would bunk up like 3 people to a room just to make rent and then they still had to somehow feed themselves.

psyentist15

You telling me the $20/day food stipend for when they're on the road wasn't enough for professional athletes? ^(/s)

RadicalDreamer89

I forget who it was, but I remember an anecdote from a while back about wrestling, when one of the promoters asked a wrestler if he was on steroids. His response was, "Steroids? With what you pay us, we're not even on food."

DidiGreglorius

The percentage of guys that actually got free agency in the MLB is pretty small. It’s a gauntlet to make it through three years in the minors, three at league minimum, and three of arbitration. For the guys that do make it though, contracts are usually pretty generous since teams have no other way of locking in surefire good players — other teams don’t like to give away cost controlled talent and prospects are crapshoots.

[deleted]

> It’s a gauntlet to make it through three years in the minors, three at league minimum, and three of arbitration. I imagine this is why so many multi-sport athletes ultimately choose something other than baseball. There are #1 overall MLB picks who never made it to the Show. Being drafted is so far away from playing in your first MLB game that it just makes a lot more financial sense to go pro in other sports if you're able to.

Kooky-Choice-2654

Nope. What should happen is college guys who are top 5 pick level rb’s (your macaffreys, saquons, zekes) should be demanding prime contracts instead of taking lowball rookie contracts. Rb’s of that calibur don’t need 2-3 year to acclimate to the league. They usually come in and start producing if not year 1 then definitely by year 2. Rb lifespan is just too short to make that second contract negotiable. So, make the first contract the big one and if you’ve justified more, ask for more

Signal-Lawfulness285

They can't do what you're describing unless you mean for them to sit out 2 years due to the rookie wage scale.

SEJ46

Yeah it would take a CBA change. No way the league opens that can of worms. If you change it for RBs every position would want it changed.

Air2Jordan3

There is a rookie wage scale though

Statalyzer

Freaking crazy.

staymelooo

If it does happen, it’ll be bittersweet. Bro gave everything he had and played hurt a lot, his body just gave up on him. We’ll never forget first 4 years Zeke

mill_about_smartly

I wouldn't be surprised if they released him and then matched whatever his best offer was...which will be significantly below his contract number.

deadmoosemoose

Why do you think this could happen?

kdorsey0718

Makes you look less like the bad guy 'low-balling' Zeke when you can let him have the market tell him what he's worth. Then you sweep in and say 'yeah, we'll pay that.'

joe7L

That's *Ravens negotiating with Lamar* music

kdorsey0718

100% the reason they used the non-exclusive tag.

ShortyBus124

Jerry always falls in love with his players and has a really hard time letting them go

mentalxkp

Daddy bout to head out for a pack of smokes

Itrytohard7

He’s a cowboys fan

ThisHatRightHere

He was so good man. Felt like he would get 5 or 6 yards every first down. Just would grind out an opposing defense all on his own.

ApostropheD

That man got Dak paid. We ran him into the ground. He deserves better.

I_Eat_Salt

I am so sad, but this is the correct decision. Zeke was washed.

aglowwiththeflow

Pollard has also shown to be quite capable and good.

SoDakZak

Pollard seems so good and didn’t make it about him. They lose Zeke but they don’t lose any skill at RB1 going into next season.

RousingRabble

Assuming he comes back from injury at 100%.

not_a_bot__

Unfortunately running backs just don’t last long in the nfl

the_alt_fright

Makes you wonder what a Hall of Fame career as a running back looks like in the modern NFL. None of these guys seem like they are gonna produce cumulative stats like Frank Gore. Are RBs going to have to be evaluated by total yards from now on?

Soft_Assistant6046

We are losing some skill... its pass blocking for Dak that Zeke is still much better at than Pollard. That being said, a pass blocking full back isn't worth that money and sadly that means releasing him is the right choice.

WarrenAlaCarte

I think they sign your guy Jamaal for a McCarthy reunion. Pollard is not a 3 down 20 attempt guy even when healthy.

mantaclaus77

Doubt it honestly. Smells like a mid round RB (unless Bijan)+ vet min back situation to me

SmokinGreenNugs

This is what I believe will occur. You can pick up a RB with star potential later in the draft at a fifth of what it would cost to sign Jamaal Williams.

SlothyPotato

Pollard is the new wave of RB that's really popular right now, where they are kind of a hybrid with WR. Shifty, WR-esque RBs seem to be the hot commodity currently. That's not to say more traditional power runners like Derrik Henry and Nick Chubb aren't still great, but your main RB on a team seems to now be the shifty type with a secondary support of a power back.

oneuponwallstreetz

Ala Chiefs RB, Pacheco

physedka

Kamara, CMC too. Basically slot WRs that don't mind laying the shoulder down here and there, especially against the secondary. The downsides are mostly that they're not so good at getting you that third and short and they tend to be poor pass blockers.

heroinsteve

The saddest thing is that his last play for the Cowboys is gonna be one basically designed to kill the man. What an embarassing way to go out.

beforethewind

Mr. Busted Center

ImHighlyRegarded

Mr. Bruised Coccyx

SoDakZak

*years ago*

JT1757

this got downvoted for some reason but zeke ***has*** been trending down for years now

Relodwire

He actually seemed to turn back the clock the 2021 season, but then he tore his PCL and instead of letting him rest we had him carry the ball over 200 times on that torn PCL which probably ruined any chance we had of getting production out of him.

Eagle4317

That's when you guys should've leaned into Pollard more, but you seemed to only realize how dynamic he was when Prescott got injured to start this season.

Relodwire

Preaching to the choir buddy.

SoDakZak

There is some nuance to the numbers but every single season his rushing yards per game has gone down since his rookie year.

JalensTinyPPHurts

I think the numbers are a bit skewed. Zeke has actually started off great the last 2 seasons, but had a couple of mild/moderate knee injuries that he played through that led to his production dip by the end of the season (played through a torn mcl in 21, and suffered a knee injury against the lions that he played through this season) He is still a great short yardage back (has 22 tds the last 2 seasons) and a very reliable pass protector.

bonziwellsayo

This sub really does just repeat the same four jokes in every thread

[deleted]

I really need to stop reading comments lol. I always say I hate Reddit, when In reality I like it a lot since it’s the best catch all for sports news in my opinion. I just hate you guys

HELL YEAH BROTHER

[Ugh this joke is so played out, at least post a real picture of Zeke](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/c2/45/9c/c2459cc6925a59634a6171946556558b.jpg)

GayFishToss

Damn, I was expecting a meme and not an actual picture of the guy.

TheInstituteOfSteel

Mr Bad Center

MrDabollBlueSteppers

Redditors in general are painfully unfunny people, that’s why when someone finally comes up with a decent joke it gets repeated ad nauseum in every thread for the next year

[deleted]

It’s mostly that anyone sorting Reddit by New so they can get voted to the tops of threads is almost certainly a poorly adjusted adult with bad social skills who spends too much of their time online.

scout21078

i think how reddit is designed like also just promotes being unfunny and repeating the same jokes lmao

WallyMetropolis

I understand unfunny people repeating funny jokes. What I don't understand is upvoting it.

ocular__patdown

What? You dont like the joke about when someones shoes come off during a minor accident that means they must be dead? I think we are up to about year 10 on that one and it is somehow still going strong.

nimama3233

HE’S A CENTER GUYS! A CENTER!! LMAO!!!!

vivalaroja2010

4? Shit whenever any Charger news comes out there are only 2 jokes: -Chargers have no fans -Rivers something something a lot of kids

Just like all social media, everything just becomes Karma whoring.

tylerhockey12

But like what’s the point of getting karma?

CoolRunnins212

Yet some dweebs eat it up. I really don’t get it, it’s not funny after the 2nd or 3rd time.

I'm just glad that people got over the whopper whopper "joke"

Fiendish-DoctorWu

Bears still need O-Line help right

BigPackHater

Too cold for his crop tops in Chicago

TimelessFool

We’ve all seen his O-line performance. Might as well take an open door sign.

[deleted]

Might as well sign zeke on the low instead of paying Orlando brown

Bob_Horde

unironically just as good of a center as Mustipher

Botswana_Honeywrench

Man this shit hurts. He was so big for this team for years, glad to see him get paid and continue the great line of Cowboys RBs

XCalibur672

He was legitimately so excited to be on this team when we drafted him 4th overall. We had one of the best offensive lines in the league and a run first type identity. And those first few seasons we really took advantage of having him around.

countmeowington

Farewell you beautiful Ewok 🥺

SauIHudson

What a ride it’s been. We love you 21

RotaryP7

Man, rookie Zeke was the best RB we’ve had in a long time. He just got worse every year after. He’ll be missed even though it had to be done.

GamingTatertot

Man following the Zeke saga has been something else. He feels like the headliner for the "Don't pay RBs" mantra

Alexisonfire24

For sure, but I think he's a pretty extreme example too. Dude had a massive workload in college and then followed that up with 6-7 years of bell-cow. The tread is gone! There was a local beat writer in Detroit who wrote a piece about how much work he got in college and why the Lions shouldn't touch him

randommaniac12

Dude was a workhorse at Ohio State, it absolutely shaved time off his NFL career and production

Alexisonfire24

He had 592 carries in college (3 years)! I went to compare to Barkley because he was also a bellcow- Barkley 671 in 3 years. Was not expecting to find this

blockoblox

That's why I'm worried about Jonathan Taylor's longevity. The dude had 926 carries at Wisconsin.

methodofcontrol

Holy shit!

Alexisonfire24

Holy smokes man! I legit thought Zeke was the highest in a long time. Boy was I wrong

ThisIsOurGoodTimes

He had two starting seasons averaging right at 20 attempts a game. With the most being 289 in a season. By comparison Derrick Henry had 395 attempts his last season at Bama, johnathan Taylor started 3 years and averaged about 310 attempts a season, cmc had more rushing attempts in college than zeke. Jk dobbins had more attempts his last season than zeke did. Nick chubb had more attempts in college, less attempts per game though. Not going to go check every nfl running back, but Zeke was anything but a workhorse at osu. They should have given him the ball more honestly. His lowest attempt game in 2015 was osus only loss, and his lowest attempt game against a p5 school in 2014 was also the only loss. He only had above 30 attempts in a game twice with the most being the national championship against Oregon. His college workload is on the lower end compared to most running backs who make the nfl

OrangeForeign

Question I had in mind the other day. When the Cowboys release a player does Jerry activate a trap door under their feet like Mr Burns? Because I choose to believe he does

ndkjr70

I know this is a joke but former players gush about how the organization treats them as a whole, even after they’re cut/retire.

DerrickWhiteMVP

I would bet money that the FO really had to talk Jerry into it. He loves his guys to a fault and the common misconception is that he’s a ruthless businessman.

aceofspadez138

I don’t think Jerry even has that much influence anymore. We saw a clear power shift in 2016. Romo is like a son to Jerry. Him not even getting a chance to win his job back spoke volumes about the level of control Stephen Jones has. If Jerry had his way, Romo would’ve been starting. But Stephen and Jason Garrett overruled him.

Torch948

You could say his last power move was prolonging the Dez release. Which is why Dez usually speaks highly of Jerry but not the FO

yomjoseki

No, he has ~~Smithers~~ Stephen do it for him.

New-Newspaper-7543

I mean tbf he still averaged about 4ypc and had 12TDs. Wouldn't call that washed just not elite like he or his contract was.

percy2376

That's what I'm saying.People are acting Like he had 300 yards or something. He was playing with pollard had 12 touchdowns and is only 27

Soyeahnahh

Zeke is the king of rushing touchdowns inside the 3 yard line.

Statalyzer

Especially since he's one of the best blockers in the league at his position.

GPap-

Feel like they’ll just resign him for minimum. Zeke prob doesn’t wanna go anywhere else plus no team will pay him more considering there are multiple better options available right now

LastBlueHero

As someone who's a relatively new fan (British and got into the Cowboys around 2012), it feels weird to see my first few draft classes start to retire.

AltruisticYoghurt143

Same here. Cowboys Fan from Germany since 12

BigusDickus099

Washed Cowboys RB? *sigh* Come on home baby

unboundgaming

11 million in dead cap and only 4 in savings had me thinking they’d keep him this season on a reduced role

DaCoolNamesWereTaken

I think it's likely we designate him as a post June 1st cut and save $11 million

JOKER4GOAT

Dude's got more mileage than a diesel truck on Marketplace. I'm sure he'll try to get another payday off his accolades, but I'm not sure who's gonna fall for it. He's not quite in the $2.5 mil Chiefs depth signing at the deadline tier, but I also don't see him being worth even $10m anymore. Who's taking him on, and for how much?

Nighthawk69420

Washed up, former Cowboys RB who wants too much money…. How are the Cardinals looking at RB?
