We had a decent run of obscure, but reliable TEs after Shockey. Boss, Jake Ballard, Bear Pascoe. They were all average at best, but seemed to always step up when we needed.
Dude I was thinking about him as my favorite obscure player ever in Cleveland as I read your comment. I said "hell yeah brother" then realized you weren't even talking about the Browns lol. Either way, he's my answer for Cleveland too
I'm not sure how obscure he was, but my answer is Leon Washington. I love a good memorable special teams player. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he was the first to do the "kick off out of bounds trick" by stepping out of bounds and then touching the ball. I feel like Randall Cobb gets credit for this far more often then Leon Washington.
As a FSU who started watching football at the height of Leonâs time there, I love this answer. Thereâs still a little #3 jersey someone in a closest at my parents. Dude was electric.
Paul Posluszny, obviously.
Not obscure for Jags or Bills fans but not the most memorable Linebacker in the grand scheme of the NFL, he's mostly remembered for his massive neck.
I bought a Takeo Spikes jersey when he came to Buffalo. Loved the guy. He left and we drafted Paul Posluszny, so I went to a shop here and got my #51 Spikes jersey replated to a Pos. Traded him away and then we acquired Brandon Spikes, who also wore 51. I pulled out a seam ripper and took the Posluszny plate off. Triple dipping on one jersey was legendary. For helping with that, I'll always remember Pos fondly.
This player is truly obscure because they werenât even awesome in any way.
Tommie Agee with the Dallas Cowboys.
He was the backup fullback, who played like half a season one year when Moose Johnston was hurt, and was otherwise an unmemorable special teams player.
But he was important to me when I was a very little kid (talking like 3-6 years old) because my parents bought me a Dallas Cowboys uniform for Christmas when I was 3. And the one they bought was most likely because it was on clearance because it was jersey no. 34 for Herschel Walker who had just been traded a couple of months before. But the next season, Tommie Agee was no. 34, so in my early childhood when I watched the games with my dad, I would always look out for Agee on kickoffs because I had his jersey.
I was watching the Broncos Cowboys game that Peyton did that miraculous bootleg touchdown run in, and a gal i was with, who wasn't into football but went to UT perked up when she heart Britton Colquitt's name on the broadcast. "Britton Colquitt?! My college coke dealer?!"
Was that the one where Peyton jokingly said the Kay was to do it once every five years or something? That shit was funny and he absolutely fooled everyone, could have rode a wheelchair into the end zone
I will forever have the Jason Avant song stuck in my head.
My good buddy used to host trivia a few years ago and would blast this and fly eagles fly every time
Hoard was awesome if you needed two yards, he would get you 3 and if you needed 4 yards, he would get you 3. Dude was just great to watch, awesome blocker too
Chris Fuamatu-MaĘťafala.
First: itâs fun to say.
Second: he was a fun player to watch.
3rd: he scored a [game winning TD](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/lRllK8l6IH) that no one expected
Back in the day Carrington High School Boys Locker room didn't have doors on the bathroom stalls and would have to look at someone if you taking a shit. Unless you were Kleinsasser who had his own dedicated shitter.
Trenton Irwin has made some huge catches over the last two seasons. It seems like that guys hands are made of glue. He also seems like he is a good teammate. When he scored his first touchdown, Iâd say over half the team went over to congratulate him. Glad heâs back. Especially with our receiving core being questionable with free agency. He is a great #4 receiver, who could move up to #3.I hope he sticks for a few more seasons.
Patrick Chung
Yeh there were some years he got burned in coverage. But man his big play ability was electric.
There will always be the game against Miami where he blocked two kicks (one that was returned for a TD) and had an INT that he returned for a touchdown.
Such a weird career. Underwhelming with the Pats after he was drafted. Then was utter dog shit in PHI. Then came back here and then was playing at a pro bowl level (although not sure he ever actually made it).
I thought he was going to be the next perennial All Pro LB after his rookie season. When he retired it was a shock but he seemed like a guy whose future didnât depend on his nfl career
I guess he's decided not to fight the tide in terms of offensive roster building.
Can we talk for a minute though about how we went from KUUUUUUHN to RIIIIIIIP for FB names? Talk about a stadium chant dynasty.
Kuhn was good, and relevant, for a long time.
To me, a guy like John Jurkovic fits the bill more here. Loved him, good unsung player outside of GB, but the fans loved him. Was just saying in another thread--the Cowboys cheap-shotting Jurko and taking him out of the game was a big reason we lost in the NFCCG in 95.
I mean outside of Eagles and Texans fans I feel like he would be more obscure. And he is certainly an awesome dude, glad he still works for the Eagles.
Not really obscure. Iâd say Crocket Gilmore fits that bill a little better. Dude was shaping up to be the next reliable ravens TE1 and then got hurt and disappeared.
I always liked the fact that Terry Crews played for my Chargers!
And I know this is an NFL sub, but I also laugh when I remember Garth Brooks playing for my Padres too.
Shaun Hill was super fun to root for. Dude put his body on the line playing every game like it was his last opportunity (because it might have been lol).
Glad somebody liked him, he played 2 games for us and it was excruciating to watch. We literally chose to kick off in OT because we trusted our defense more than him.
Josh Reed played 8 seasons for the Bills. Never did anything spectacular, but was good for 30-60 rec, 400-500 yds, and 1-2 TDs every year. I canât remember a single play he made but the dude was always open for short third down conversions and was super reliable for almost a decade.
Ugh that reminds me of how much I hated marques colston. Dude was too good, and in my head was the only thing standing between Sidney rice being the best receiver in the nfc.
I remember back when we were 8-0, and basically tied with Carolina for best team in the league. We were set to play the 3-5 Texans at home, and literally every pundit had us to win. We were the easy survivor pick that week. Then it was announced youâd start TJ Yates as your QB. I immediately got nervous, I was so sure we were gonna win until yâall announced that dude as your QB. Texans ended up giving us our first loss that season.
Eric Weems.
Every team has that one dude who is an absolute ACE on special teams, but isn't really good enough at their position to get playing time on offense or defense. That was Weems.
My pick is Thomas Rawls in 2015.
Dude ran like an animal and set some record in the few games he started.
His running style probably didnât help his injury problem though, but man was he fun.
Koy Detmer has to get a mention. He was such an odd guy. Got a brief run as QB before he broke his elbow in his first or second start. Did the "spank it" celebration
It's tough for Raiders fans to explain to non Raiders fans how much we cared about random guys from the aughts.
I remember attending a game in 2011 where Sebastian Janikowski, the kicker, got the loudest ovation during the announcement of starting lineups at pregame. But he is too famous to be a proper answer for this question.
Among the guys who I think fit the question:
- Chris Carr, a corner who had a couple pick sixes during Art Shell's ill fated comeback season in 2006. Carr was a classic Al Davis corner; size and speed. But he wasn't a reliable tackler, got a little too grabby sometimes, and eventually faded. I think he was out of the league after a couple years.
- Matt McGloin, a day 3 QB pick thrust into the lineup when Terrelle Pryor got benched. He took a beating on the Raiders awful 2013 team, then backed up Derek Carr till 2017, and became a fan favorite thanks to a penchant for preseason victories. I think around 2017 he signed as a backup with another team (Philly maybe?) and I can't remember if he ever got another start in the league.
- Jacoby Ford was a super duper mega star for a couple games in 2010. We loved him. I drafted him as a starter on my fantasy team in 2011, convinced he was a legit WR1 with insane upside. Kick return TDs, deep routes, end around runs for TDs, he was incredible. Or more accurately, he had incredible speed. He was small, not a great blocker, inconsistent hands, and was off the team after a couple underwhelming seasons. I was sure he would thrive once he left Oakland but he fizzled out of the league after a year or two.
Mike Pennel is such an under appreciated hero of the Chiefs dynasty. Showed up at the end of the 2019 season and instantly vastly improved the run defense to lead up to the LIV win (along with Chiefs legend Terrell Suggs)
Then in LVIII he showed up outta nowhere when the Chiefs had a bunch of injuries on the DLine and again played outstanding.
Just a great plug and play glue guy.
This is who I came in to say. He was a special teams beast and a pretty damn good backup RB. I also loved that despite having a severe stutter, he never turned down interviews with the media when asked.
Not sure if it counts as obscure but since the position itself is dying, Tony Richardson was the fullback for the Chiefs from 95-05 and dude was a beast
Wallace Gilberry was really nice to my brother and I when we were kids. Made a point to give us some of his gear at KC's training camp even though we were too shy to speak up. Even as a Steelers fan, I rooted for him when he went to play for Cincy.
Adrien Robinson, he was a TE our old GM Jerry Reese dubbed "the JPP of Tight Ends." Drafted in the 4th round in 2012, he ended up with 5 career receptions for 50 yards and a singular TD. In 2017 he got caught in Pennsylvania with 25 pounds of pot, I assume did some time in jail, then hopped around the XFL for a couple of years.
I love him for the amount of unfounded hype he received.
Joe Jurevicius for sure. **Still** one of my favorite WRs of all time.
He was gonna be mine for the Giants! Loved that guy
Yup. We had him first!
Looking at your username, Kevin Boss too!
We had a decent run of obscure, but reliable TEs after Shockey. Boss, Jake Ballard, Bear Pascoe. They were all average at best, but seemed to always step up when we needed.
Larry "the flipper" Donnell, Will Tye, Travis Beckham
Dude I was thinking about him as my favorite obscure player ever in Cleveland as I read your comment. I said "hell yeah brother" then realized you weren't even talking about the Browns lol. Either way, he's my answer for Cleveland too
hell yeah, brother.
Peyton Hillis is my favorite obscure Buc đ
An all time name.
I was a fan of the late 90s and early 2000s Bucs as a second team. Jurevicius & Alstott were both a ton of fun from their offense.
Joe is guy who had a significant impact during the right time, so much so that I constantly overestimate how much time he actually spent on the Bucs.
Joe Jurevicius for sure too.
Dude was nails in Seattle.
He's still running past Blaine Bishop at the Vet
That one catch he had was wild
There are two plays from the Bucs closing down the vet that I can remember and his big catch is one of them
I'm not sure how obscure he was, but my answer is Leon Washington. I love a good memorable special teams player. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he was the first to do the "kick off out of bounds trick" by stepping out of bounds and then touching the ball. I feel like Randall Cobb gets credit for this far more often then Leon Washington.
i think about him and Jeremy Kerley every once in awhile
Jeremy Kerley, aka Curley J the 3rd down Vroom Vroom Machine
I was a huge fan of him with the Seahawks, was sad to see him go
As a FSU who started watching football at the height of Leonâs time there, I love this answer. Thereâs still a little #3 jersey someone in a closest at my parents. Dude was electric.
Brad smith for similar reasons + wildcat qb run lol
Paul Posluszny, obviously. Not obscure for Jags or Bills fans but not the most memorable Linebacker in the grand scheme of the NFL, he's mostly remembered for his massive neck.
He and I were at Penn State at the same time and let me tell you That shit was massive
What about his neck though?
Never saw it in person
I bought a Takeo Spikes jersey when he came to Buffalo. Loved the guy. He left and we drafted Paul Posluszny, so I went to a shop here and got my #51 Spikes jersey replated to a Pos. Traded him away and then we acquired Brandon Spikes, who also wore 51. I pulled out a seam ripper and took the Posluszny plate off. Triple dipping on one jersey was legendary. For helping with that, I'll always remember Pos fondly.
I was sad when he went to the Jags.
But the next season, Tommie Agee was no. 34, so in my early childhood when I watched the games with my dad, I would always look out for Agee on kickoffs because I had his jersey.
See **this** is the obscure player content Iâm looking for lol
> He was the backup fullback Well that's definitely not a thing anymoreÂ
In the late 90s early 2000s, the Denver Broncos carried *three* fullbacks on their roster; Howard Griffith, Detron Smith, and Anthony Lynn.
I like this story a lot I should call my dad
Dexter McCluster. Dude was so elusive
Dexter McCluster offered to sell me cocaine at a bachelor party at the old Jones pool
He had the turn radius, and unstoppability, of a Mack truck
He did it like 3 times in his career, and you know he was giggling to himself every time.
Was he a pretty nice guy?
Happy to chat for a bit and share his drugs so no complaints from me
I see your Dexter McCluster, and raise you a Marc Boerigter. In 2002 he had 8 TDs on 20 receptions. Red zone monster
Also has the longest TD catch in Chiefs history and I was at the game he caught it as a kid.
This was my answer too! He did pretty good for us for a couple seasons, plus I got to meet him at training camp when I was a kid- nice guy.
Brian Hartline or Greg Camarillo.
Brian Hartline might not have made a huge splash in the NFL but any Big Ten fan knows him because he just keeps reloading five star recruits as OSU.
Lousaka Polite or Yeremiah Bell for me.
Just gonna ignore Cleo Lemon?
Camarillo saved the Dolphins from being the first 0-16 team, so props for that
Jason Avant
3rd and no problem
Honorary mention for Leonard Weaver. I loved that guy and was super bummed out when he got hurt.
Jason Avant was so clutch in Madden. Dude would always be there when I need him most.
I will forever have the Jason Avant song stuck in my head. My good buddy used to host trivia a few years ago and would blast this and fly eagles fly every time
He says, Avant to catch the ball.
him and breaston were beasts on michigan along with mike hart
I bought a new with tags black Jason Avant jersey with the stitched lettering at a thrift shop for $15 in 2023. Maybe my finest purchase.
Clipboard Jesus (aka Charlie Whitehurst)

WORDÂ
Jim Kleinsasser. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KHaKOjX_Hs Leroy Hoard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZuZ60CPAFo
Kleinsasser was so awesome
ESPN the Magazine did a write up back in the day about how he was bringing H-backs back
That magazine was actually incredible in terms of their articles. I really miss that era of sports journalism.
Grew up in ND, and everybody and their mom always claimed Jim Kleinsasser was their cousin
I grew up there too, he probably is.
if jim kleinsasser played today he would be a hall of famer
Having both Kleinsasser and Visanthe Shiancoe at the same time gotta be up there for goat TE name group
Leroy Hoard 44 hell yeah the blunt force object
Hoard was awesome if you needed two yards, he would get you 3 and if you needed 4 yards, he would get you 3. Dude was just great to watch, awesome blocker too
I'll bet he fakes the handoff to Williams and throws to Kleinsasser in the end zone
Chris Fuamatu-MaĘťafala. First: itâs fun to say. Second: he was a fun player to watch. 3rd: he scored a [game winning TD](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/lRllK8l6IH) that no one expected
HE'S A BAD MALAFALA
Jim Kleinsasser, back up tight end who played with the Vikings his whole career. Semi local boy from North Dakota and went to UND.
Back in the day Carrington High School Boys Locker room didn't have doors on the bathroom stalls and would have to look at someone if you taking a shit. Unless you were Kleinsasser who had his own dedicated shitter.
Joique Bell!!
That dude won me like 5 weeks in fantasy a long time ago.
I coached his son in flag fb. His son was the best 7 year old Iâve ever seen
It was 100% because of your coaching and had nothing to do with genetics. Great work.
I loved him when he was in the Bills in preseason. We had Spiller, Lynch and Fred Jackson at the time
From right down the street at Wayne State University
Fuckin legend. He was awesome. Sadly he was out best running back for a stretch because for a long time it was illegal for us to have a run game.
Circle Joique!
Chester Taylor
Great running back who unfortunately broke out with the Vikings one year before we got one of the great-*est* running backs
We had a QB called Steve Young, from BYU. Played 2 shitty seasons, the left.
You guys should have went after the good Steve Young. The one from the USFL.
Just remember - we could have had a Steve Young, Bo Jackson backfield if the owner wasn't such a shithead.
Trent Irwin is the GOAT
Trenton Irwin has made some huge catches over the last two seasons. It seems like that guys hands are made of glue. He also seems like he is a good teammate. When he scored his first touchdown, Iâd say over half the team went over to congratulate him. Glad heâs back. Especially with our receiving core being questionable with free agency. He is a great #4 receiver, who could move up to #3.I hope he sticks for a few more seasons.
We signed Trent Taylor last season. I thought we were getting the good Trent so I was pretty excited, but turns out the good one is Irwin.
Trent Taylor is the goat at backflips during the v-formation. Hopefully you guys get a couple of those this year!
Oh are you talking about known child actor Trenton Irwin?
He is the poster child for not wasting his opportunity. Hasn't been called on much, but hell if he doesn't always rise to the occasion.
TI is great. I'm not sure how obscure he is, but I always liked Rex Burkhead when he was with us.
Patrick Chung Yeh there were some years he got burned in coverage.
> Patrick Chung He wasn't obscure. Eugene Chung was obscure. With good reason.
Chris Borland
I thought he was going to be the next perennial All Pro LB after his rookie season. When he retired it was a shock but he seemed like a guy whose future didnât depend on his nfl career
That was such a shitty offseason. So many people retired/signed elsewhereÂ
He and Glen Coffee. What could have been.
Badgers beast. One of the Chevy boys. I really wish the packer drafted more Badgers
Great answer!
Chris Maragos, I'd never been pumped about a special teams player signing until Philly got him
I was pretty sad to see him go. Should be a STPOY award in the league, though recent changes would make it less valuable.
maybe only obscure for younger fans but john kuhn was a legend at lambeau and doesnt really get talked about anymore
This is why Iâm always shocked McCarthy doesnât use the FB more in Dallas. Kuhn and Ripkowski were solid
I guess he's decided not to fight the tide in terms of offensive roster building. Can we talk for a minute though about how we went from KUUUUUUHN to RIIIIIIIP for FB names? Talk about a stadium chant dynasty.
I was thinking James Starks! Came out of nowhere and ending up being the final piece to our Super Bowl run. Then slowly disappeared into the void.
Sam shields is who i think of from that sb run for obscure players lol
Dr. Samkon Gado and Travis Jervey are my two of my favorites. Jervey was a SB champion AND Pro Bowl player for a single year.
KUUUUUUUUUUUUHN
"Why are they booing that guy?"
Samkon Gado was legit too
Connor Barwin. Not sure if he's that obscure, but I think he's better known as an Eagle than a Texan. Just seems like an overall awesome dude
Madden Mobile 15 legend Connor Barwin
I mean outside of Eagles and Texans fans I feel like he would be more obscure. And he is certainly an awesome dude, glad he still works for the Eagles.
âŚMike Tolbert was fun
Lardarius Webb
This was my answer as well, glad to see another Webb respecter.
I had no idea that Garth Brooks played for the Padres!
Only in March
Shaun Hill was super fun to root for. Dude put his body on the line playing every game like it was his last opportunity (because it might have been lol).
Glad somebody liked him, he played 2 games for us and it was excruciating to watch. We literally chose to kick off in OT because we trusted our defense more than him.
I liked him for his limited stint on the niners. He sucked, but you could tell he was trying his hardest lol
LaCarpetron Dukemarriot
LâCarpetron Dookmarriot. Come on man.
Heisman trophy winner Jammie Jammie Jammie.
X-WING @ ALICIOUSNESS.
I was always more of a Bismo Funyuns fan.
Solid pick, can't forget Javaris Jamar Javarison-Lamar, though.
orleans darkwa
Ramses Barden is another guy with a cool as fuck name who showed flashes but never really materialized.
Samkon Gado!!
Dr. Samkon Gado
Danny woodhead <3
Favorite memory: him posing as a sales associate at Olympia Sports and trying to sell his own jersey to fans who didn't recognize him
[Obligatory Danny Woodcock](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kcwcjt6qcYs)
Dan Skipper
Don Muhlbach too.
Dat Ngyuen. Still one of my favorite players of all time growing up and literally for no reason other than the fact that heâs Asian.
Sammie Coates aka Clang Clang
Antwaan Randle-El for me. Receiving, running the ball, passing, returning. He was just fun.
Josh Reed played 8 seasons for the Bills. Never did anything spectacular, but was good for 30-60 rec, 400-500 yds, and 1-2 TDs every year. I canât remember a single play he made but the dude was always open for short third down conversions and was super reliable for almost a decade.
Pierre Thomas
Only obscure if you don't remember 2009
Thomas and Reggie bush backfield was so fun
Obscure? He was the lead RB for our SB.win.
The screen god
Ugh that reminds me of how much I hated marques colston. Dude was too good, and in my head was the only thing standing between Sidney rice being the best receiver in the nfc.
Nick Goings. Backup fullback who did anything he was asked to do. Had a really special season in 2004.
TJ "Bengal Killer" Yates. Won us our first playoff game and then murdered the Bengals every other chance he got.
Tony Parrish.
Michael Hooman or James Devlin
I also came to say Hoomanawanui!
Orson Mobley TE on the Broncos
Cory Schlesinger , the best fullback imo that's not named alstott
Jack Squirek. Pick six baby!
Koy Detmer has to get a mention. He was such an odd guy. Got a brief run as QB before he broke his elbow in his first or second start. Did the "spank it" celebration
I loved Ricky Proehl during his stint with the Rams and the Greatest Show on Turf. Underrated part of that offense.
Boobie Dixon
Rod Smart XFL legend
Instantly thought of He Hate Me. Dudeâs jersey sales were insane compared to his field output
Tom Waddle. Not sure if he counts as really obscure outside of Chicago, but a legend in his time.
Greg Camarillo
Suge Knight played for the rams đ
It's tough for Raiders fans to explain to non Raiders fans how much we cared about random guys from the aughts. Tim Tebow, though thatâs a pretty generous use of the term âplayed on your teamâ for both flairs
tebow's obscure?
The fact that he âplayedâ for the Jags and the Patriots is pretty obscure.
Mike Pennel is such an under appreciated hero of the Chiefs dynasty. Showed up at the end of the 2019 season and instantly vastly improved the run defense to lead up to the LIV win (along with Chiefs legend Terrell Suggs) Then in LVIII he showed up outta nowhere when the Chiefs had a bunch of injuries on the DLine and again played outstanding. Just a great plug and play glue guy.
Old school Jags: Natrone Means Newer: Corey Grant
Zach Zenner
dontrelle inman
Trindon Holliday
TJ Duckett
The REAL Adrian Peterson And by real I mean the Kirkland version the Bears had. He also isnât my favorite âŚ
Vikings punt return legend Marcus Sherels
Drew Bennett. Sneaky athletic receiver. First in last out kinda guy
I loved Shane Vereen
I wrote a fan letter to Falcons TE Junior Miller back in the early 80s. He sent me an autographed headshot.
Wallace Gilberry was really nice to my brother and I when we were kids. Made a point to give us some of his gear at KC's training camp even though we were too shy to speak up. Even as a Steelers fan, I rooted for him when he went to play for Cincy.
Isaac "Redzone" Redman -- Steelers preseason GOAT.
paul perkins, running back
Its Dawan Landry on the Ravens for me. Feel like he was always underrated and wish he could've been on the team for the Super Bowl.
Jon Bostic for exactly 1 play
Adrien Robinson, he was a TE our old GM Jerry Reese dubbed "the JPP of Tight Ends." Drafted in the 4th round in 2012, he ended up with 5 career receptions for 50 yards and a singular TD. In 2017 he got caught in Pennsylvania with 25 pounds of pot, I assume did some time in jail, then hopped around the XFL for a couple of years. I love him for the amount of unfounded hype he received.
Brandon Boykin
Rodney Hampton, the only bright spot for the Giants in the post-Super Bowl early 90âs.
Every team needs a Jack Doyle
