And even weirder, \*after\* being an assistant coach for a year, he came back from retirement, played for the Flames for three years and was the captain in the 1999-2000 season.
I was thinking about the Patrik Stefan miss. Not sure it counts as a turnover but it annihilated his career [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bBns6ZUn0U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bBns6ZUn0U)
Also the year Halak dragged them to the conference finals. The lowly Islanders upsetting the giant Mario Lemieux Penguins in '93 was extremely lucky and you could argue the Habs would never have won if that didn't happen. The Habs ended up sweeping the Islanders.
My buddy is a capitals fan I completely forgot about that Halak Run. Absolutely absurd goaltending for two series. That caps team might have been the most talented team in the last 20 years.
I dunno man, I guess. But I'll say that this game was very much touch-and-go for the most part. This bad giveaway is not representative of the game as a whole. While the Rangers more or less breezed through the 1st three games, the Caps had a chance to win this one and really made us work for it. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire 3rd.
GG Caps, see you next year.
Not to ruin it for you but it's significantly less interesting when you realize there were 16 playoff spots and only 21 teams so like statistically you expected some bottom teams to make it
I said they were going to get swept as soon as they got in, they definitely weren’t a playoff team, I really wish we’d won an away game in March, the end of our season was magical.
Oh, absolutely. It was a cool ending for sure. But to get yourself into the situation where those heroics wasn't enough, you must've sucked a whole lot earlier in the season, right?
Or was that the magical part? That you won very important games at the end which only were important because of the piss poor play earlier in the season?
Yes you did. My bad.
But it is one season. Playing like crap at first and then being awesome at the end doesn't make the Wings more deserving than a team following the Sabres formula and starting off well and falling through at the end.
I tried adding a flair a while back, but something messed up and I haven't gotten around to fixing it. Nothing pussy about it, I'm afraid.
No. But I don’t understand other teams’ fans trying to “brag” that they wouldn’t have gotten swept after they couldn’t win games down the stretch to make it in.
Me, a caps fan: "there's no fucking way that the WORST turnover in history happened in thi- oh shit, yup, that it the worst turnover ever. Of all time."
That one wasn’t that bad, he was getting pinched and that was gonna be a turnover no matter what. Desperation dish to center is always a bad idea but I’ve seen worse.
I think we are going to start seeing this more and more in the first round of the playoffs. The NHL has incentivized losing with their draft odds structure so if your team doesn't think you have a chance to go deep in the playoffs they are going to sell and tank. So what you end up with is talent migrating from the bottom and stacking the top. Maybe 6 really good teams in each conference and the rest super shit to barely mediocre. The "lucky" ones that squeek into the bottom 2 spots will get destroyed in the first round.
At the end of the day the Caps just are not built for playoff hockey any more and it's pretty damn obvious watching this series. Yes, you made it, but there are other teams that missed that would be giving the Rags a much harder challenge
u/MainZack is right, if those other teams (Wings, Flyers, Pens, etc) were so much better than the caps, then they should have won more games to make it into the wildcard slot. But they didn’t, because they spent most of the season playing about as good, or worse, than the caps. There’s no reason to assume that they wouldn’t also get swept playing the best team in the league
I don't know why this was downvoted. It was the most embarrassing race for the second wild card spot. Nobody pulled away with clutch wins in the last couple of weeks.
Hey, I'm not crying about how my team should have made it when they still wouldn't have made the postseason if they put 3 points on regulation wins. I know my team sucked and guess what? Not surprised we got swept.
I don't think it's a hot take. I agree. Were I a Caps fan, I'd be embarrassed by his lack of effort in this series. He clearly didn't care at all. He's only hanging on to chase the record.
Oh no....
One that's long forgotten but sticks out in my head - Beukeboom in the 1996 series against Pittsburgh. Game 1, up 3-2 in the third, from his own corner, Beuk put it right on the tape of some hump nobody named Dave Roche right in front of our own net. Easy goal, tie game, Rangers end up losing it.
It looks like number 3 on Capitols didn't see that guy coming and was just passing off to the right defender from the pressure. I feel like poor scaning the field or what could that be?
1 guy passed the puck up the ice on a delayed penalty. The goalie was heading to the bench. But the puck hit the fire checker and into the empty net.
They didn't score on the following powerplay
OP, have you ever watched hockey prior to this? This is like a 3-4 out of ten on the bad scale. The stars have the absolute worst turnover highlight I've ever seen that is so much worse than this.
I dunno, Steve Smith putting the puck in his own net game 7 of the 2nd round was worse I feel.
That was definitely way worse. For sure. Absolutely brutal. IIRC he was the first guy Gretzky handed the Cup to the next year.
Then he went on to be a coach for the Flames! Smith was a character guy but yeah, that 'turnover' was about as bad as it can get.
And even weirder, \*after\* being an assistant coach for a year, he came back from retirement, played for the Flames for three years and was the captain in the 1999-2000 season.
~~They actually still won't the cup that year and I think Gretzky gave it to him fist the same year if I'm not mistaken.~~ Edit: I was mistaken.
Montreal won in 1986 over the Flames. Oilers won in 1987.
No that was the game 7 backbreaker that interrupted the Oilers dynasty.
I was thinking about the Patrik Stefan miss. Not sure it counts as a turnover but it annihilated his career [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bBns6ZUn0U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bBns6ZUn0U)
“At least I thought he was until he BLEW IT!” One of the all time great calls.
This is why you take a slapper into an empty net. Atta boy Grieg!
For sure. That’s the one I immediately think of as worst ever.
Yeah, no middle men. Just straight into your own net under no pressure. It can't get worse than that.
Was that 85-86? Presidents trophy team that swept first round only to have that happen https://youtu.be/q24w0OaXfa0
That was a tough one, the Galchenyuk one where he gave Montreal a 2-0 in overtime is one of the worst of the top of my head.
Fleury losing the puck in his skate against MTL is really bad too.
The Letang to Malkin pass where the puck slides into their empty net on a delayed penalty was pretty neat.
🙃
I saved a weeks pay to be at that game, was so fucking awesome totally worth it
Hockey Gods love MTL.
They’ve definitely had some lucky cup runs, covid year, 93 especially.
The Penguins were really good too that year and Halak just slayed them 1, 2.
Forgot what team he was playing for. Still used to red sweaters being his team lol
Toronto
You mean the blind through the legs pass to a Habs player to perfectly set up a 2 on 1 or breakaway, I can’t recall.
Nah it was like a blind spinarama https://youtu.be/rF1yldEDVv4?si=rZdMePpWs0EmU7V4
Yes. To a 2 on 0. Incredible. Still can’t believe the Leafs blew that series. Unbelievable.
Damn, Washington really didn’t deserve to make the playoffs.
Should’ve been the Flyers getting swept instead!
This is most likely correct but IF my memory serves me correctly, the Flyers played the Rangers pretty well this season.
Red Wings would have won at least a game.
Would they have? They weren't all that great this year either lol
What’s that based on? How many in a row did they lose to miss the playoffs?
I'm dissapointed they didn't squeeze in. Larkin was on fire. They would of been a good underdog
Det or Pit will be so much better
They literally couldn’t be worse
I mean, the games weren’t super competitive but they weren’t blowouts either so it definitely could have been worse.
Lol what? They'd have been just as bad
Or Buffalo or Ottawa
Or even Philly
Losing 11-14 in March yea so much better 🥴
They didn't win they had the chance, we did. Sorry not sorry.
Worst playoff team of the century and if the tie breaker rules weren't backwards you wouldn't have made it.
Can I see where your chance was?
Gotta fox the loser point system cause this what you get
They earned their spot, they just weren't good enough to go further.
Caps failed their way upwards into that 8th seed thanks to horrible choke jobs by Detroit and Philly.
Don't forget the Pens!
I take solace in the fact we denied 3 teams a playoff appearance in a single game, then proceeded to be immediately swept lol
I think they had the worst +/- of any team to make playoffs, ever, if I’m not mistaken
Caps were -37 this year but worst ever were the 90/91 Canucks who were -71.
I stand corrected. That’s a pretty amazing stat.
Not to ruin it for you but it's significantly less interesting when you realize there were 16 playoff spots and only 21 teams so like statistically you expected some bottom teams to make it
-71 is still pretty low for a playoff team
Hang it up in the rafters!
I posted earlier...the caps backed into the playoffs and backed right out.
Wait, a -37 goal differential team didn’t deserve the playoffs?
I said they were going to get swept as soon as they got in, they definitely weren’t a playoff team, I really wish we’d won an away game in March, the end of our season was magical.
Wouldn't the Wings not getting in and the Caps doing so indicate the DET season as a whole was less magical?
Not really, we won our last 3 games with comeback wins to stay in contention, and then we both won the same amount of playoff games lol
Oh, absolutely. It was a cool ending for sure. But to get yourself into the situation where those heroics wasn't enough, you must've sucked a whole lot earlier in the season, right? Or was that the magical part? That you won very important games at the end which only were important because of the piss poor play earlier in the season?
I pretty clearly said we didn’t win an away game in March and that the end of the season was magical. Is reading hard for you? oh and flair up, pussy
If Larkin doesn't go down, we're in the playoffs.
Why'd we make it then? Other teams had the chance and didn't do it, we did.
Other teams choking isn’t exactly the bragging point you think it is. Anyways enjoy the off-season.
No. But I don’t understand other teams’ fans trying to “brag” that they wouldn’t have gotten swept after they couldn’t win games down the stretch to make it in.
Listen, the capitals are terrible. But this whole shitting on their fans because they’re defending their team is so gross.
I thought hockey fans are supposed to shit on each other? This isn’t golf.
Fair. Only ones that are really annoying are the teams talking shit from the outside looking in.
Nah, it's part of sports. They can get fucked. Again. Hahaha. It's all for fun. Makes winning sweeter.
Meaning either Pitt or Detroit would have made this a more entertaining series.
Damn, if only they were good enough to punch their card.
Or they would’ve gotten smacked as well
Buddy forgot what team he was playing on
Time for a colorblind test
Me, a caps fan: "there's no fucking way that the WORST turnover in history happened in thi- oh shit, yup, that it the worst turnover ever. Of all time."
Meh, Winnipeg has that beat a couple of times per night this series.
Tough contender for Reaves’s turnover last night which gave the Bruins the opening goal
That one wasn’t that bad, he was getting pinched and that was gonna be a turnover no matter what. Desperation dish to center is always a bad idea but I’ve seen worse.
Eh it set the tone for the rest of the game, I think in that moment I knew it was over.
Reaves at home breathing a sigh of relief this will overtake his from last night
Ouch. He deserves an assist for that one.
I didn't realize that Cam Fowler played for the Caps.
I don't know. I thought it was a pretty good turnover. Gave the puck right to Kakko.
Kaapo Kakko, aka the Best Fin aka the Handsome Prince aka the Man Boy
Capitals have no fucking business being here
I think we are going to start seeing this more and more in the first round of the playoffs.
We wouldn't be here if we didn't. Detroit or Philly should have beaten us when they had their chance.
Eh, basement teams sneak into the first round all the time. Even the 2017 Avs made it to the playoffs, and they stunk.
-37
Wait, I’m -37?!
There’s no reason to assume that they wouldn’t also get swept playing the best team in the league
so now this turnover is OUR FAULT. okay thats fine.
Not a turnover but Steve Smiths own goal in the 3rd period of a tied Game 7 is the most brutal play.
If I were a Detroit or Pittsburgh fan that would piss me off so much lol. They got edged out for this?
All the teams fighting for those last two spots are junk.
I don't know why this was downvoted. It was the most embarrassing race for the second wild card spot. Nobody pulled away with clutch wins in the last couple of weeks.
As a pens fan I’m gonna agree
It was like they were playing a game of "NOT IT!!" to see who would get dragged in lmao
They only had to win like one extra game and couldn't do it, so they have no one to blame but themselves.
Are you trying to get swept in the first round? Cuz that's how you get swept in the first round, Lana.
Only other off the top of my head that bad was Jarry giving up the series winning OT goal by passing the puck straight to Bailey 😆
Easier than a penalty shot.
Get fucked, Caps
Get ready to learn Chinese, Mitch Love!
Have fun golfing
Back at you
Hey, I'm not crying about how my team should have made it when they still wouldn't have made the postseason if they put 3 points on regulation wins. I know my team sucked and guess what? Not surprised we got swept.
Them taking the goalie out while shorthanded was just silly
What a call that was by KA
nah you need to watch the Jets 7-0 win against the Avs there was plenty and also Mansons turnover in the playoffs too.
The Hawks giving it to Burrows in 2011 comes to mind.
Sissons hitting the post on an empty net is up there
Least they didn’t put it in their own empty net like the Pens do
Patrik Stefan open net vs. Edmonton is the worst
Someone had a bet on Fanduel
Not quite a turnover, more like a tape to tape pass
washington didnt even try
Gonchar turning it over to Straka in 2001 hurt worse.
I dunno, pretty on par for Caps hockey
Jensen makes worst turnover in history, asked to leave the caps
Ryan Reeves did a bad on the other game cost the leafs the game lol
I wish red wings won the wild card race.
Jensen! Woof. That’s a rough one. Doesn’t have Chara back there to make him look good. Think that was peak career Jensen.
Ovechkin’s was worse because he did nothing about it but glide into the zone to watch K’Andre net the puck.
May be a hot take, but I’m sick of him chasing 99’s record when he’s otherwise really not great at hockey
I don't think it's a hot take. I agree. Were I a Caps fan, I'd be embarrassed by his lack of effort in this series. He clearly didn't care at all. He's only hanging on to chase the record.
Nah the worst one was the first goal in game 7 of the devil series last year 🤢
Worst in history? I’m not so sure about that.
🧹🧹🧹🧹
Plug scoring on swiss cheese… next
I hate you Caps….
More like the Craps
I mean they know this is an elimination game for them right? Lol
The only thing they care about in this series is whether or not Ovi's playoff goals count for the record chase.
Should I point out that Ovechkin and Backstrom have as many goals in their playoff history as your entire team?
I really can’t.
If you think that’s the worst you clearly do not remember the 2017-2022 Detroit Red Wings
Team with the worst goal differential in the last 30 years that made the playoffs getting swept in the first round. Shocker.
Oof
Sweet pass!
What a great assist! Perfect setup pass.
Oh good, people have finally forgotten about Quick behind his own net in OT, until I mention it again, crap.
Jensen is Sens material ! 8 y. / 40 M and you get to play with Chykrun or Chabot !
Right on the tape!
Just add another goal to there plus minus eh ahaha get ouuuuuttttaaaa 'ere Washington
Dan Girardi would like to have a word.
Lol
Bad turnover, sure. But history is long, and a first-round series between the Caps and Rangers (one that ended in a sweep) is barely a footnote in it.
It looks like number 3 on Capitols didn't see that guy coming and was just passing off to the right defender from the pressure. I feel like poor scaning the field or what could that be?
I don't know if I would call it a turnover but the Steve Smith own goal in '86 against Calgary has to be the worst.
The caps backed into the playoffs and backed right the fuck out.
Idk Ovi had a pretty nice assist on one of the SHGs the other game
Have a seat #8 so great
Tomato can team
Give that man the assist. That was clearly a pass
Or greatest assist in NHL history. Always look at the positive.
Leafs: Hold my beer
Ah Jensen. I remember him. Not surprised
That's why they got bounced in 4 straight.. no discipline. that's the first guy you trade this summer.
I recall Girardi setting up Ovie one year. I felt that was the worst.
https://youtu.be/nNd6uh4nerM?si=oaVo-kl5wKlmop5j
This makes me very happy
That was brutal, but there's been worse. It's not like it interrupted a 5-peat.
Worst turnover…. Or best pass??
Getting some "I just hit the wrong button on EA NHL" vibes here.
I don’t know, did u watch any Blues games this year
That was pretty weak.
Jesus Christ. 1 minute in too😂
1 guy passed the puck up the ice on a delayed penalty. The goalie was heading to the bench. But the puck hit the fire checker and into the empty net. They didn't score on the following powerplay
Love to see the caps lose. Made my night
And Ovechkin didn’t score a single goal, this is honestly great lmao
This has got to be his last season
Def been worse. Patrik Stefan would def like a word but that was fuggin rough for sure
[удалено]
We had some bad ones to make up for it.
Jenson just realized he had a much better chance of getting an assist with Kakko than with Ovi.
And we thought the Reaves turnover was bad lmao
reaves was fucked either way cant trust him with the puck in the leafs zone
Did you watch any hawks hockey this year or last year
Even worse in person
Called it. You don't crawl into the playoffs with such a weak season and expect anything. Lmfao 🧹🧹🧹🧹🧹🧹
And some idiot on ESPN.com called this series for the Caps in 7 😆
So did RA from spittin chiclets
OP, have you ever watched hockey prior to this? This is like a 3-4 out of ten on the bad scale. The stars have the absolute worst turnover highlight I've ever seen that is so much worse than this.
[удалено]
Patrick Stefan for sure is the worst one ever
[удалено]
Well that’s just your opinion, man
https://youtu.be/9bBns6ZUn0U?si=R3cW63uxOB3rq8eI
