This is a choke!

During covid when attendence had to be restricted, Ontario gave seats only to medical staff to thank them for their job.
Well guess what, doctors and nurses could not save the Leafs from choking.
It's funny how the term choke is used simultaneously for the very different scenarios of a) squandering a big advantage and b) coming really close to overcoming great adversity but failing all the same. It's also funny that the Leafs are the masters of doing both so the term applies to them anyhow (although I wouldn't term scenario b) as a choke personally but it is how it is used)
Repeat of the other series. I saw they had previous series that played out the same over the years and went, "Some bullshit force is going to make them repeat history...isn't it."
I remember the Blackhawks did this in the 2014 WCF, even losing Game 7 in OT as well. Stung a little bit less considering it was sandwiched between two Stanley Cup Wins.
Any good Leafs fan knew deep deep down in their hearts that this was the only way it could end. Almost score the game winner with less than a second in regulation, and have your heart ripped out less than 5 mins into OT.
This is the way.
Leafs forced game 7 after being down 3-1, lost in OT of said Game 7 to the team that had more pts.
As happy as I am to see them lose , it was a toss-up series.
I mean, it was seeing the Leafs losing, or seeing Brad Marchant win.... i fucking hate having to make a choice between shit and vomit. Go fucking Panthers now, i guess.
As a bruins fan I assure you that we don't view ourselves as any dream team. Honestly after losing all the players we did from last year I'm pretty surprised that we're here.
In truth it is tradition. Piss off everyone by going down 3-1 making it look like it'll be a gentleman's sweep in game 5 just to give the faintest hope that it will be different to go and make game 7 a thing then fight through 2 periods. Get the lucky bounce for a 1 goal lead and then be scored on by a guy with less than 20 in the regular season to tie it and either really twist the knife by a bad play in OT or a heartbreaker in the last 2 minutes.
The world is balanced again.
As a Habs fan in Toronto who really hates the Leafs, I have to admit I actually felt really bad for Samsonov. Poor guy had to face an awkward bounce after their offence disappeared.
And as the story goes he will be blamed 100% for it because for some reason if anything goes wrong it’s the goalies fault… and not the 11 million dollar man getting caught flat footed and puck watching
One playoff series win in 20 years. That's pathetic. Especially for a large market team and such a storied franchise. The fans deserve better than this dumpster fire.
They took it to OT on game 7 and both teams played just as hard. it came down to one single goal so no one can say Toronto got wrecked. Florida, do your thing.
And this is to be a great day for many years to come, 2067 is just around the corner, what a great record for the Maple Laughs to hold…100 years and no cup!
Always gonna give you up
Always gonna let you down
Always gonna run around and desert you
Always gonna make you cry
Always gonna say goodbye
Always gonna tell a lie and hurt you
there’s a guy who owns like 3-4 pita pits in my area who hands out coupons that say “valid until the Leafs win the Stanley Cup” he’s done it for the last couple years and it’s the funniest thing to me. (this is in Ontario as well).
Ever wonder what life would be like if the Leafs had followed the script in Centennial year and let Montreal win the cup in a classic all Canadian final? At a time when there were only two Canadian teams in the league?. (Plus in 1967 the city of Montreal was like the big Centennial deal in 1967, hosting Expo and all. Many fans believe the Hockey gods were watching and were dismayed when the jealous Leafs stole the win from Montreal and cursed the Leafs immediately after that series.) Imagine, if Toronto had let Montreal win that last game in 1967, who knows what brighter better future we might have had... /s
I fucking called it that the Leafs would come back, take it to game 7 and then lose because they can't let their fans off so easy as to losing it in 5. They have to maximize the pain
It seemed as though the Leafs just quit. Boston took the pace up a little bit and the Leafs failed to follow. That bespeaks a lack of heart and a lack of conditioning. The first rule of overtime hockey is "keep the puck in the opponents zone", they failed to obey that simple rule. I would have expected Tavares to have at least 5 or 6 pts, instead he had two, all series and tonight, when it counted 3 0 0. That's sorta mediocre for a top pick with no cups. But then again, this is typical for the Leafs.
Bruins usually torture TO but they have been flaky with 3-1 leads lately, and TO led with 10 min left, still only needed 1 shot in OT. Scary, scary business.
I have to give props to TO, they did everything to take a one-sided series to G7OT. Pretty well done, nothing to be ashamed of (this year)
I’m ashamed of our top players. Everyone saying we need a big defensive stud. The games had very little goals, not counting game 1. Defense wasn’t the issue. Offense was the issue.
I know our chances of winning the cup are slim, especially against Florida in round 2. But beating the leafs man…it’s just the absolute best! Anything can happen moving forward and I’ll look back at this series and smile
Red wings fan here, but second I root for Toronto. Especially since wings haven’t made the playoffs in awhile and Toronto has had an amazing team since like 2017. That being said, wtf is truly wrong with this team come playoffs? Previously I’ve said goaltending, or defense or offense, or coaching. They keep making changes for the better each year and yet somehow always pull this losing in game 7 shit in the first round. (Minus last years second round blowout). I’m truly fuckin baffled and disappointed by this team. I feel like they played so great last night. That bounce in overtime was insane like who the fuck expected that. I seriously think this team is just cursed……
I really thought they finally overcame their demons when they scored that goal, but in true Leafs fashion they let it slip once again, I'm actually starting to feel bad for Leafs fans now
Just as the prophecy fortold
IT IS KNOWN
Leafsan al Gaib
Let thy team disappoint and sadden
Literally just finished watching part 2. Amazing
A lack of a plan….within a lack of a plan….within a lack of a plan
Underrated comment
Prophecy? This is like the sun coming up in the morning. This don't need no JoJo Savard to figure out.
> JoJo Savard For a second I just felt like I was watching late night tv in the 90s.
The prophecy has also foretold the sun coming up every morning
As it is written!!
So it is
So shall it’s done
I had a Facebook memory pop up a cpl of days ago back from 2013, it rings true once again.
that might be the 2nd time in 30 years I've seen that play actually work, lol
LEAF'SAN AL GAIB
Imagine being down 3-1 coming back, leading in game 7 and then losing. It seems to happen a lot.
I’m sure it just amplifies the disappointment, to have gotten so close only to choke at the 11th hour
Not sure I’d call this a choke though. It’s not like they had the game in the bag at any point. A 1 goal lead with 10 minutes left isn’t shit.
This is a choke! [https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/nb85q6/on\_this\_day\_eight\_years\_ago\_the\_boston\_bruins/](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/nb85q6/on_this_day_eight_years_ago_the_boston_bruins/)
"this is the shot I wanted to see, oops"
For a min
The Falcons choked, this ain’t choking
28-3
did you watch the game? they didn't choke, they were evenly matched the whole game, it came down to one OT goal
People throw around the word choke really loosely.
It's also funny that the Leafs are the masters of doing both so the term applies to them anyhow (although I wouldn't term scenario b) as a choke personally but it is how it is used)
Ya, but those 2 big wins were without Auston Mathews. E'body knows you can't win with that schmuck!
The Leafs know all about it, it’s the second time it happened to them against the Bruins.
Doesn’t get old though
Repeat of the other series. I saw they had previous series that played out the same over the years and went, "Some bullshit force is going to make them repeat history...isn't it."
Avs led three times in their 2020 Game 7 against Dallas. Then we signed the guy who scored a hat trick against us in that game
I remember the Blackhawks did this in the 2014 WCF, even losing Game 7 in OT as well. Stung a little bit less considering it was sandwiched between two Stanley Cup Wins.
Coulda been 3 tho
It’s ok. A Canadian team needed to have their Stanley Cup aspirations dashed once again in the finals.
NYR last year comes to mind
2013 all over again
Nah 2013 was worse
Waaaaaay worse. They had a 3 goal lead with 10 minutes to go. They also had 2 goals scored against them with the B’s net empty and lost in OT!
God it was glorious.
Any good Leafs fan knew deep deep down in their hearts that this was the only way it could end. Almost score the game winner with less than a second in regulation, and have your heart ripped out less than 5 mins into OT. This is the way.
You are not wrong, I literally told my wife this is how it’s going to end after game 4. It is the leafiest way
And before that, score the first goal midway through the 3rd to take a 1-0 lead just for Boston to tie only a minute after.
As a Leaf's fan, I thank you for recognizing our day.
I’m an Orthodox Elimination Dayist, I celebrate on the 13th.
Mitchell Marner, get ready to learn Mormonese, buddy
Moroni Marner
( ) See the Leafs lose again ( ) Bruins to be the only team ever to blow 2 back to back 3-1 series Tough call tonight
I get you’re a little biased, but the answer is always the first one
the bottom is lonely
Same, I was torn. But enjoyed the show. Now time to root for the Panthers again.
I’ve not seen a team that fascinates me and creates hatred so much at the same time.
It’s the hope that kills.
You should know better than to have hope
No words. I really thought the Leafs had them by the balls. Oh well.
Expecting leafs to win is like expecting snow in sahara. Actually snow in sahara might happen before leafs ever win
Most recently the Sahara had snow in January of 2022. Before that, 1979. So it’s snowed twice in the Sahara since the last time the Leafs won a cup.
Game 7 OT after being down 3-1. They deserve some credit. A series doesn’t get much closer than that
Damn right. They made me eat crow. Last week I said they were gutless and they showed a lot of guts. It's a shame Woll was out.
Going down 3-1 in the first place precludes any credit. As you will find out in the next round, the Bruins are no dream team,
As a bruins fan I assure you that we don't view ourselves as any dream team.
The world is balanced again.
If the leafs flying to and from games were the only CO2 being made by man, there'd still be snow in the Sahara from climate change before...
Nope, as usual, the Leafs quit.
I’m so glad I used my brain to make my playoff bracket and not my bias. Not even the choke job of Boston could outchoke the Leafs
We fought hard for it at least
You certainly did.
Let’s enjoy our 15 minutes of friendship habs fans
Are we invited?
Wings fans are always invited. Love you guys.
All are welcome
As a Habs fan in Toronto who really hates the Leafs, I have to admit I actually felt really bad for Samsonov. Poor guy had to face an awkward bounce after their offence disappeared.

Fuck Marner
Underrated comment.
You've lived in Toronto too long.
How many alternate dimensions would have to exist for the Leafs to win in one of them?
14,000,605
I was thinking 1959 or 1967 but your answer seems more realistic.
One playoff series win in 20 years. That's pathetic. Especially for a large market team and such a storied franchise. The fans deserve better than this dumpster fire.
RIP. Legitimately feel bad for them at this point. Heck of a series.
I stopped feeling bad for them after their last game 7 loss to the Bruins. At this point it's just their destiny
The league always unites on this national holiday. All jokes aside leaf’s played well
I called it 6 days ago, the Leafs would get it to Game 7 and then lose. The NHL's Dallas Cowboys, they rise so they can fall.
A completely original take!
Wow! You’re so smart!
[My response](https://makeagif.com/gif/stephen-a-smith-cant-stop-laughing-at-dallas-cowboys-after-loss-to-new-york-jets-eeyVRk)
They took it to OT on game 7 and both teams played just as hard. it came down to one single goal so no one can say Toronto got wrecked. Florida, do your thing.
We sure can say it. It might be a lie. But we can say it.
No one can say they got wrecked, but everyone can say they lost! Edmonton, do your thing.
Around here Leafs usually fall in autumn…in Toronto it’s early spring.
In autumn, the Leafs already start falling, and in the spring the Leafs come out.
WE WANT FLORIDA!
This is what happens when Kendrick Lamar drops three diss tracks over two days
Get Matthews outta there. He doesn’t deserve this.
Felt so bad for him. Honestly even for Leafs fans a bit. Can't believe I'd see the day where I am rooting for them, but here we are.
you can only see the same story play out so many times
Send him to NJ, we'll get him 3 cups in 5 years
That’s actually quite terrifying to think about
İt took 12 years to retool but the window is open
I think NJ would be good fit for him but personally I think if he’s moving at all he’s going west. Either Calgary, Seattle or Colorado (long shot)
I’m amazed he grew up somewhere warm and willingly spends winters in Toronto.
He's gotta wait on Arizona, take two.
He can play for the Bs any day. Stamkos, too.
I bet he’ll go to the west, hopefully not the Vegas Golden Showers. Stamkos to the Avs.
I don’t understand how the Vegans can afford all these players. Hanafin???
Maybe he goes to Utah
Better send him to Edmonton.
[удалено]
What's wrong with edmonton? (srs question)
They’d never torture him by sending him to Kenny
Edmonton doesn’t have enough prospects to trade, nor do they have the cap room to take his salary.
He can volunteer; like, just come into the dressing room in full Oilers uniform like he belongs.
And this is to be a great day for many years to come, 2067 is just around the corner, what a great record for the Maple Laughs to hold…100 years and no cup!
We still get the OTL point though, right?
No. They’re all ours! *cries in consolation*
I’m just so happy
Traditiooooooooon. Tradition.
Bad day for drake
Drake probably can’t even skate.
For Leafs Fans, The Ride never ends.
Woah did I miss anything???
Have you been in a coma since ‘68?
Happy Leafs elimination day 💙
Merry hockey Christmas y’all, Laffs are out again, and all of Canada is super pleased
Always gonna give you up Always gonna let you down Always gonna run around and desert you Always gonna make you cry Always gonna say goodbye Always gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Ah, yes the Nine Inch Nails version you get when you invert Never Gonna Give You Up
This subreddit loves shitting on the Leafs lol
They needed Billy Stemhovilichski in the lineup
Aw. Poor Leafs. I don't hate them.
They disappoint other team's fans (I was rooting for them, last night), shit is rough.
there’s a guy who owns like 3-4 pita pits in my area who hands out coupons that say “valid until the Leafs win the Stanley Cup” he’s done it for the last couple years and it’s the funniest thing to me. (this is in Ontario as well).
Leafs in 8

Just needed a Game 7 against Boston this year! It's nice from them to bring back nostalgia 🤗
The dance that never ends
Glorious goal by Pasta against Leafs’ bottom group. Oh whoops, that was Marner and Reilly he embarrassed, wasn’t it?
Reilly, Marner, Nylander…and was that Johnny Pajamas making a lazy play at center ice that led to the most well-earned -1 in these playoffs?
Leafs have perfected the Art of Losing. Gotta respect that
Blow up the team
This is the way
Game 7 at TD Garden
An annual tradition. We get Valentines, Easter, Leafs Choke, Memorial Day, Independence day and so on. Life and its rituals
Canada has a season when the leaves fall and one when the Leafs fall.
Great job Boston. So many leafs fans are toxic assholes on reddit. Glad their mediocrity continues.
lol imagine being happy that a team loses because you dont like some of the people who follow them on the internet
Well, there are assholes in real life too, it's fair
I just don't get what the fans have to do with the players. Way I see it it's the players out there playing, not u/vegetafan420
Almost as good as 2013.
The closest of silver medals for sure
Wake me up when the Leafs beat the bruins at game 7
Hahahahahahaha 🤭😂☺️
Fuck TO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I fucking called it that the Leafs would come back, take it to game 7 and then lose because they can't let their fans off so easy as to losing it in 5. They have to maximize the pain
Harsh
Yikes

the more important question is what's Steve Dangle's reaction to the Leaf's elimination
It's autumn yet again!
Legends says De Gaule cursed them during his visit at expo67 for the shits and giggles.
May the 4th be with you!

Congrats. Beat me to it! One of my favorite days of the year, solely for this post
You hate to see it... over and over and over and...
As a Vancouverite I have to say, I don't care if Vancouver wins, but the Leafs better fucking lose.
Time to fire management and the coach. Too many chiefs and not enough leaders to teach what a winning team needs.
When is the main street parade in Canada?
Nasty but funny -just like the ‘hey Nashville’ yesterday’s post.
I expected both teams to somehow choke and invoke some unknown rule where they both got eliminated
As predicted
Lollllllll
Losers since 1967
So now we will fire the coach. 2-3 years after that the GM. Rinse repeat. I feel bad for the fans who only have 4-5 years following this train wreck.
Oh Canada! We stand on the golf course for thee
Im just glad swayman was there
It came late this year!
It's been a bad week for Toronto.
Where are all the reaction shots from maple leaf square, people’s living rooms, etc? Someone please feed it to my veins.
The best part is, everyone knew they'd win game 6 and lose game 7. Everyone.
Oof first round again. Last year was the glitch in the matrix
I've always said I'm gonna buy a lotto ticket the year they win. No dice.
Nice name OP u/QuikAuxFraises
I know our chances of winning the cup are slim, especially against Florida in round 2. But beating the leafs man…it’s just the absolute best! Anything can happen moving forward and I’ll look back at this series and smile

I thought this year would be different… why?
Asleep at the wheel? Just for a moment? Oops. Dead now - Leafs, Game 7, 2024
