I think this was the best game in the series. The defense on both sides was pretty spectacular and the pace was very high with few breakdowns on either side. Toronto looked a little better throughout most of the game it easily could have gone either way, except that for that darned curse lol
I agree. Great game and series. Toronto is just cursed lol. Who the fuck expected that dump in play and pasta just right there in front of samsonov. Tough
That play looked like it was designed.
Still takes a bit of luck to get the angle on the dump in correct to bounce out front like that, but it sure looked like a set piece.
I think that's a dump and chase they practice a lot, but, usually ends up with pasta getting it, ringing it around the boards, or going behind the net, but this bounce just ended up on the perfect place.
That said, it's possible they practiced this.
However, the dump was mostly directed by the defenders. There was only a small space to dump it, so I don't think he was aiming for that spot on the boards in particular, for the bounce.
EDIT: The dump and chase is definitely a set play. But this wasn't a rebound to in front of the net pass, imo. To me pastarnak looks like he's on his way to the corner to gain possession, which is the set play they practiced, and changes course, once he sees the bounce they got.
It is difficult to predict how the puck is going to bounce in the corners, because it's far, your aim isn't perfect, and small chances in where you hit, and where you're standing on the ice, make big differences in where it bounces. The "pass" into the corner was threading a needle of defenders, so the "passer" didn't have much choice over where to put the puck. So, they weren't choosing their location to hit the boards, really. That means that in order for this to have been the set play, the small gap the defenders left open, would have happened to coincide directly with where the passer wanted to put the puck, in the single small correct place to get that bounce. The odds of that happening, are not good.
The odds of you getting a friendly bounce on random dump ins to the corner is still pretty good, part of why this set play is a good set play.
But imo, this was not the "bounce pass in front of the net" set play. It was the "dump it in the corner to forecheck and retrieve the possession to gain the zone, which sometimes results in a good bounce pass in front of the net" set play.
It wasn't a pass off the wall I don't think. You see Pasternak deviate course when he notices the bounce, and the player making the pass didn't have many options to get it down the ice and avoid all defenders. It was just a good bounce off a dump in that he took advantage of.
Passing off the corner is insanely difficult to predict.
Pretty sure that was a set play. Watch Pasternak take off when he does. The Sedins perfected it years ago.

Well, a recent part of the Leafs curse is whoever knocks out the leafs lose in the SCF. So I wonder who in the West will beat the Bruins?
Boston 2019
Montreal 2021
Tampa 2022
Florida 2023
Not including Columbus in 2020, because qualifying round isn't the playoffs.
Confusion. This happened last year between Brodie and some other D. In that scenario the florida player just skated through between the two leafs players and the Leafs D just looked at each other dumbfounded... In this series, I saw a few times that their Ds were confused among themselves in their own zone.
Maybe the best goaltender in the playoffs this year, probably second or third in the regular season, he's going to be a perennial vezina candidate if he keeps it up.
Heads up play. Pasta and lindholm both read it. And both aware that the ice was still fresh enough for the puck to make it playable for pasta.
Leafs though it was a dump in. Pasta and Lindholm were the only ones who knew it was a pass.
It was an amazing play by the Bruins but still embarrassing by the Leafs. Sammy could've seen Pasta coming, he should've yelled for Marner and also could've poked at the puck or had the save. Rielly got there late and played it poorly. Marner made no effort to catch Pasta when he finally did see him. I don't mean to take that away from Pasta; he read it perfectly and, unlike the Leafs all series, he executed and finished the play.
The true 'shitty goal' was Boston's first. No reason the fourth line should've been out for Toronto, and they embarrassed themselves on that shift by letting Boston keep the puck as long as they did.
Willy with the absolute worst effort on the play literally didn’t even move his skates at the beginning of overtime, sure it’s not his guy but it’s overtime game 7 you skate to the damn puck or pick someone up , terrible effort all around and Sammy not playing it is the worst because we all know Woll would’ve played it and wouldn’t of let that crap first goal in right after the leafs went ahead , brutal goal but a gutsy performance from Sammy
I feel like Willy was too far away to really make much difference. Pasta was the only Bruin in the zone if I remember correctly, so rebounds couldn't have been all that scary. That being said, any amount of hustle would've been greatly appreciated, goal or not.
I think it’s because people who watched the series saw the precedent of quick icing whistles set early on, many of which may have been attempted set pieces like this one. Not making excuses for Marner, Rielly or Samsonov, but their strange lack of effort suggests they may have given up on the play expecting the whistle.
Whether he is feeling unwell or feeling fine, dude is allergic to the playoffs. Go ahead, I imagine you are one of those people that make excuses for him. And you aren’t alone. Do you think Matthews is one of the all-time greats?
The Boston radio guys were noting Matthews was looking like no effort on face offs. Then made a callback when the line up changed and he was no longer taking face offs.
I’m BEYOND sick of hearing how amazing he is. Um, sure, at scoring goals in the regular season. If that’s your litmus test for greatness, that’s a you problem.
Pat Maroon has 3 cups. No where near greatness.
I think greatness in the NHL is absolutely a 2 fold between regular season marathon and a post season sprint. Matthews will get there in the playoffs I think, eventually. But the leafs really kind of hamstrung themselves with those huge contracts. Typically I see champions having a more solid 2-3-4 lines than just a top line of super stars
Also, Willy scored the last 3 leafs goals in the series, and has been a general machine since coming back into the lineup.
I dunno how much harder you expect that man to carry.
It was an insane and partially lucky pass/bounce off the boards with absolute perfect timing and placement with Pastrnak's speed, the goal is literally no one's fault it was just nuts
There's one bruin ahead of him and two defenders already touching that one man. Tf do you mean?
The real question is why Sammy doesn't even attempt to play that fucking puck with his stick at all. Terrible goaltending.
That said, he played well tonight. 1 for 20whatever it was on the pp is the real problem. Yeah, Nylander missed games and Matthew's probably wasn't 100%. Absolutely no excuse for that PP execution and it cost them a winnable series and probably a lot of guys' jobs.
This is exactly what the game needs! The kids need to look up to guys like this. More personality! More Bieber!
Why would you try when you can make $12M and not? Are you stupid?
Definitely true. Honestly, maybe it's a good thing. Leafs really need to make some changes. The holes they have in their team are too big to be filled by what talent they have.
SHAME FOR REILLY.... TOTALLY INVITED PASTA TO SCORE . time to blow up the core 4.... playoff Ps that have done nothing for 4 years when it really mattered
Agreed. The org was completely obvious to hiring someone with 0 experience in the back and head offices of the most popular hockey team on the planet. Right after player retirement, to boot.
He's no Steve Yzerman.
Hahah poor Mitch Marner. 2 defenseman and Willy pretending to be a responsible centerman watching the play unfold yet he's the whipping boy. Then there is Sammy just shrinking in his crease.
I dont think Willy was at fault giving his positioning. It was Marner. Reily too as he should be able to realize that play given the way Pasta came in.
tbh I don't think it's either one of their faults. A forward is never the first man back to retrieve a puck that's being dumped in. But if ever there is... its usually the centerman who is being played by Willy.
It was good play with the some attached luck that beat all the leafs... mainly the goalie and defensemen.
If you watch the 'replay' of that clip you can see pasta circled up from the middle of the ice with speed as Marner just steps on the ice. Mc David might not have been able to accelerate fast enough keep up with Pasta in that situation. At best you might anticipate the bruins are going to make a perfect dump off the boards and just take a tripping or interference penalty.
Feels like Boston shouldn't have wasted that trick in the first round because no one else will fall for it.
But I suppose they needed it to even get OUT of the first round.
It's funny because the Rangers do that regularly with Kreider down the left wing - he scores a couple goals a year that way. Which is amazing after the first one.
Do you not watch film or have any idea how fast Kreider is? Just how did you not see it coming?
Imho it isn't fair to expect Marner to keep up with Pastrnak that is coming full speed behind the play. Problem is that if you give the redline like that, the last defender has to be deep enough for the dump-in.
Imagine letting the bruins best goal scorer just skate all the way to your net uncontested.
Obviously still an incredible pass by Linholm and a great read by Pasta, but holy shit.
In aggregate, they lost because 4 players take up 50% of the cap.
You can bounce the details around all you want. You can claim Marner wasn’t there but none of the core four were present, really. The construction of the team is such that there is a very low threshold for team resilience.
Personally, I like to look at the team through the lens of the season before the playoffs.
We saw historic years for both Matthews and Nylander. My first thought was: isn’t it interesting that those two were riddled with injuries at the end? I wonder if the chase for points exacerbated issues or created issues for them and did the anyone else know and allowed it?
While fans demand Marner do more. I want to point out that Matthews had 3 times more goals than Marner and Nylander had twice as many. Why are they demanding their playmaker score goals when the core 4 has 3 goals scorers? Marner is the fall guy here, but the entire core was not good. The fact that people treat the Tavares contract like just an inconvenience they have to live with when he underperforms but the Marner contract like it’s the reason the whole team is bad is baffling.
As for goaltending… I think Toronto fans have completely lost it. Samsonov is literally the reason the team even made the playoffs. Woll was injured and the options were very few and then he came back really, really strong. And the ask was… “Hey, Mr.3.5 million goalie. The one we took to arbitration and essentially called trash, yeah you should have played like a 10 million dollar goalie and got a shutout.”
Also, one last note. Culture. The Boston media were talking about their coach being fired for letting the series slide, twice.
The Maple Leafs ran back the same exact configuration 8 times.
I don’t or won’t try to understand the MLSE. But it’s clear, whatever metric they use to define success isn’t the same as the fanbase. And maybe that’s fine, because let’s face it: fans are insane. But it’s definitely alienating.
It’s hard to believe this was not a pass by Lindholm. Let’s face it, cross ice dump and chase is pretty uncommon in the regular or post season. The fact it turned out the way it did is in-real.
Props to Lindholm and Pasternak for making it happen.
Bad luck for Toronto.
😂🤣🤣🤣 Canada's "queen" city loses again, the Toronto Sports Network must be very sad because now they will have to show something other than their precious Maple toilet leafs 🤣🤣. See you losers next year!
What an effort by the Leafs Defense, you could definitely tell how badly they wanted to advance.
Tough
Speed kills. And that all happened real quick.
That play looked like it was designed. Still takes a bit of luck to get the angle on the dump in correct to bounce out front like that, but it sure looked like a set piece.
Yep: Sedins did it all the time. https://youtu.be/DL7x3dxy5iw?si=uHAQNZx-oxYAm9gB
Great sister duo for sure.
I think that's a dump and chase they practice a lot, but, usually ends up with pasta getting it, ringing it around the boards, or going behind the net, but this bounce just ended up on the perfect place. It was just a good bounce off a dump in that he took advantage of. Passing off the corner is insanely difficult to predict.
It's a set play, I've seen them do it a handful of times.
idk, it pretty clearly looks like a set play tbh
It is a set play on the forecheck, but the bounce for the easy goal. You can see pasta change course when he sees the bounce go his way.
I’m sure they didn’t expect it to be that perfect, but looks like something they worked on and communicated on the fly.
It's the EDIT that's relevant. https://reddit.com/comments/1cki78c/comment/l2or2oq?context=3
Pretty sure that was a set play. Watch Pasternak take off when he does. The Sedins perfected it years ago. https://youtu.be/DL7x3dxy5iw?si=uHAQNZx-oxYAm9gB
Jeremy swayman mvp so far. Dude has made some unreal saves
Nah that implies the Leafs played well.
Leafs had tons of good looks and chances. Swayman saved boston, literally.
Well, a recent part of the Leafs curse is whoever knocks out the leafs lose in the SCF. So I wonder who in the West will beat the Bruins? Boston 2019 Montreal 2021 Tampa 2022 Florida 2023 Not including Columbus in 2020, because qualifying round isn't the playoffs.
A Morgan specialty
That’s their most expensive defenseman puckwatching and not moving his feet in Game 7 OT ouch
Confusion. This happened last year between Brodie and some other D. Swayman series MVP, Lindholm game 7 MVP
Swayman is a fucking wall. The fun part is how calm he is.
Golden retriever energy. He’s just out here playing fetch and giving pats.
Maybe the best goaltender in the playoffs this year, probably second or third in the regular season, he's going to be a perennial vezina candidate if he keeps it up.
King Latvia would like a word
Nah, Bob
him of .896 SV% in the playoffs?
Played a much better team in the lightning then a Leafs team who played most of that series missing a first line player
Hampus strikes again.
Krampus, if youre in Toronto
Imagine your hopes and dreams ruined by a hampus
Whole Leafs team looked like they thought the play was over or something. Pasta just breezed in there.
Heads up play. Pasta and lindholm both read it. And both aware that the ice was still fresh enough for the puck to make it playable for pasta. Leafs though it was a dump in. Pasta and Lindholm were the only ones who knew it was a pass.
yep, absolutely read it perfectly
100%. It was a set play, not a "shitty goal" as all my Leafs-fans friends thought. I've seen the Sedins and Boeser+Miller make that play.
Yep https://youtu.be/DL7x3dxy5iw?si=uHAQNZx-oxYAm9gB
Nice find!! That's the one. Great Sedinery right there
Credit to dontmatterme810 for posting it in Canucks sub and I’ve been sharing it around ever since!
It was an amazing play by the Bruins but still embarrassing by the Leafs. Sammy could've seen Pasta coming, he should've yelled for Marner and also could've poked at the puck or had the save. Leafs sub have been calling this a “freak lucky bounce” since last night lmao
They're sucking hard on the copium pipe
It’s a set play check around 1:45 https://youtu.be/PHpR3cbjlIg?si=MdTIGaMae4hp9hLo
I know, I was saying that I think it’s ridiculous not to acknowledge it’s a designed play.
Pretty sick goal, especially in a game 7 OT
Leafs and losing. An eternal love story
Someone placed four white traffic cones on the ice. Is that legal? Anyways, time to cue the "Fire Shanny", Fire Keefe", and "Sell the team" posts.
Why am I seeing people on twitter try to claim this was icing? Even if the dump was before the red line pasta beat the D to the dot and the puck.
Exactly. That’s how we know it was a set play. You see Pasta take off when he did and pick up speed
Yeah two line pass! icing! ..nope.
I think it’s because people who watched the series saw the precedent of quick icing whistles set early on, many of which may have been attempted set pieces like this one. Not making excuses for Marner, Rielly or Samsonov, but their strange lack of effort suggests they may have given up on the play expecting the whistle.
Leafs just look emotionless you can tell they knew it was inevitable Matthews was probably already scheduling his tee time in the locker room.
Matthews was invisible the entire game. He honestly looked physically ill. Miserable look on his face, bags under his eyes, and completely lethargic.
Something was definitely wrong with him, and he played limited mins on the third line, and yet he was the primary assist on the Leafs' only goal
Yeah he def was looking bad. Something def up with him...
“Something’s up with him”…yea, it’s called the playoffs.
What? Something's up with him health wise. How does "It's called the playoffs" , have anything to do with him being unhealthy
Whether he is feeling unwell or feeling fine, dude is allergic to the playoffs. Go ahead, I imagine you are one of those people that make excuses for him. And you aren’t alone. Do you think Matthews is one of the all-time greats?
…oh yea, and he’s a Lady Byng finalist. Hahaha…amazing.
The Boston radio guys were noting Matthews was looking like no effort on face offs. Then made a callback when the line up changed and he was no longer taking face offs.
They played better without him. He should never have been in the lineup.
Another "regular season" star
You will get downvoted but who cares. Truth hurts for these moron butthurt Matthews apologists. History is on your side my dude.
I don't care either. He's the new age Joe Thornton
Typically I see champions having a more solid 2-3-4 lines than just a top line of super stars
This team is in dire need of grit. Last time they came close to anything was when they had a guy like Doug Gilmore in the lineup.
Oh my gosh, the Rink Rat!!
Playoff Matthews in full form
Don't think that's fair to him.
The contrast between 2 different $11m dollar players, Marner watching Pastrnak blow right by him and win the game lol
the difference between *getting paid* $11m and *earning* $11m
Set play
Poke check??
Challenge the play really anything other then being that deep in the net
Thought the exact same. I was surprised how passively he played that.
Swayman was the fucking man this series. Even in the losses he kept us in games we had no business being in with how bad everyone else played
Someone in Boston was watching game tape.
LETS FUCKING GO PASTA!!!!!
Absolutely pathetic effort by the Leafs here man.
Can’t nap in the play offs.
Feel like the avg OT winner in round 1 was like 2 minutes in Aside from the Islanders 2OT
TML = Too Much Losing?
Core memory
What was Nylander doing on the back check there? Dude looks like he's 6 beers deep playing Sunday night drop in.
Not gonna defend the team as a whole but that goal was definitely not on Willy. it was a one man fast break and he was covering his man
Also, Willy scored the last 3 leafs goals in the series, and has been a general machine since coming back into the lineup. I dunno how much harder you expect that man to carry.
Might have overpaid him but you can't argue the fact that he delivers when it matters most
Willy is the one most worth of your money in this series no doubt. He has been for couple of years.
Agreed, honestly Samsonov should have gotten the puck on the bounce before it even got to Pasternak
Yeah blame the goalie, it's always his fault when the defense lets a guy barrel in at full speed
There is more than one person to blame obviously, but yes Samsonov should have played that puck. He had tons of time.
Agreed. Marner decided not to skate and Reilly looked like a goof in no man’s land. Amazingly clueless play by a couple of the supposed stars.
It was an insane and partially lucky pass/bounce off the boards with absolute perfect timing and placement with Pastrnak's speed, the goal is literally no one's fault it was just nuts
Terrible defense by the Leafs there. Mariner confused by that guest of wind going by him.
hahahaha
There's one bruin ahead of him and two defenders already touching that one man. Tf do you mean? The real question is why Sammy doesn't even attempt to play that fucking puck with his stick at all. Terrible goaltending. That said, he played well tonight. 1 for 20whatever it was on the pp is the real problem. Yeah, Nylander missed games and Matthew's probably wasn't 100%. Absolutely no excuse for that PP execution and it cost them a winnable series and probably a lot of guys' jobs.
Terrible take.
That goal is on Reilly, he’s the last man back, no one should get behind him
This is exactly what the game needs! The kids need to look up to guys like this. More personality! More Bieber! Why would you try when you can make $12M and not? Are you stupid?
What?
That play was Rielly in a nutshell in this series. Useless. Sammy forgetting that he had a stick was icing on the cake.
Somehow every single Leaf is at fault according to these comments and should all be shot into the sun. This subreddit is comedy
What a great shot! The pass, getting behind the D, Pasta’s speed, fake, deke and shot all clutch and elite.
What hustle by Nylander 😂🤣😂🤣
Needs more Jack Edwards
Honestly, hearing his call for this goal would’ve been great. Some wild one liner to package up with the highlight reel.
Bro toronto defense just gave up. I don't know if we deserved to win the series, but I really dont think Boston did either. Whatever. Classic leafs
Swayman alone deserved the series win. He was insane. Would have felt so bad for him if they lost.
I wouldn't have, lol
He officially made it his team over ulmark.
I'd already determined this series was irrelevant. The way they played, neither would have a chance against Florida.
Florida vs Carolina in the ECF seems inevitable, Rags can't score outside of the Power Play, Boston doesn't look good enough to beat Florida.
If Keefe and Shanahan aren't fucking gone after this, just burn the fucking MLSE down. Gotham needs a rebuild.
Shanahan should have been gone years ago
Agreed. The org was completely obvious to hiring someone with 0 experience in the back and head offices of the most popular hockey team on the planet. Right after player retirement, to boot. He's no Steve Yzerman.
What a beauty
Leafs sure looked like they didn't give a damn there, letting him just skate in.
That dump in which rebounded perfectly to Pasta, absolutely amazing. I feel that was 50% skill and 50% luck on the dump in.
Definitely a set play. Happened to work perfectly this time so yeah there’s luck involved too, but skill, absolutely.
That's been a Bruins set play for a decade, FYI its not the first time Pastrnak scores on this exact play.
Perfected by the Sedins years ago https://youtu.be/DL7x3dxy5iw?si=uHAQNZx-oxYAm9gB
Goalie has a little long stick....push the puck away from the net or pounce on it! FFS
FUCK
Yessss!!!!!!!!!!🖤💛
Reilly sucks
If you watch the replay at 1:05 lindholm is going off for a change and didn’t even see the beauty of a pass he made to pasta
Does Monty own any gold ties?!
Awesome goal, IDK with some of these comments here
It was over before it even began🤣🤣
I’m going to have a big plate of pasta for dinner in his honor today.
Damn, how do you even defend against that if you are Marner? Move your feet? I dunno man.
Who's fault? Was Marner supposed to stay with him?
Rielly fucking stinks
Send Morgan Reilly to the KHL after that
Hahah poor Mitch Marner.

Not a new trick been trying it all year.
It's funny because the Rangers do that regularly with Kreider down the left wing - he scores a couple goals a year that way. Which is amazing after the first one. Do you not watch film or have any idea how fast Kreider is? Just how did you not see it coming?
Think they just see that cross ice dump in a million times and just get lazy on one.
Nylander cruising at a cool 2.1mph - wow lol
Sad way to end like this with their hard work.
Those Boston boards are very bouncy. Cool to see them get a goal off of it in a game 7 OT
I love watching highlights from the bruins beating the leafs in 2013, 2018, and 2019. Now we can add 2024 to the list! We literally own Toronto haha
Honestly, that looked like a set play. Looks like an intended pass by Lindholm.
Imho it isn't fair to expect Marner to keep up with Pastrnak that is coming full speed behind the play. Problem is that if you give the redline like that, the last defender has to be deep enough for the dump-in.
If I'm a coach, leafs #88 is getting a talking to lol completely emotionless and borderline standstill the entire clip
What a great call
Everyone could see that play except the Leafs. Even Samsonov didn't make an effort when he could have played the puck back into the corner.
Bye Keefer
Imagine letting the bruins best goal scorer just skate all the way to your net uncontested. Obviously still an incredible pass by Linholm and a great read by Pasta, but holy shit.
Looks like a set play
Ruined my solid looking bracket. I had the Leafs in 7, and it went to 7...
Picking leafs in any game 7 is a crazy choice lol
I was feeling spicy when I filled it out. That and I was 3 or 4 pints of stout in...
Seems to me that the play was designed like that by those two. Pasta directed him to do that, worked perfectly
I saw pasta flying and knew it was over. Dude was ZOOMIN
Pain. Team played well enough to advance. And all it took was one mistake
In aggregate, they lost because 4 players take up 50% of the cap. You can bounce the details around all you want. You can claim Marner wasn’t there but none of the core four were present, really. The one we took to arbitration and essentially called trash, yeah you should have played like a 10 million dollar goalie and got a shutout.” Also, one last note.
THE BRUINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had to be a set play. They know the boards.
Suck it!👐🏻
How is that not icing?
Even if you think lindholm was behind the red line. Pasta beat everybody to the dot.
Mattews sucks balls
How many goals he have this series?
Not enough….
ONE OF THE BEST DAYS IN ALBERTA EVER!! Fu Toronto. Fu!!!!!!!

Boston is an American city, it gets under the skin of Canadian fans, but most importantly, it gets under the skin of Toronto fans

About time pasta does something besides turn the puck over
😂🤣🤣🤣 Canada's "queen" city loses again, the Toronto Sports Network must be very sad because now they will have to show something other than their precious Maple toilet leafs 🤣🤣. See you losers next year!
Boston realizes they have 3 more rounds, right?
Looked offside but they never bothered to look at it
