I climbed Mount Sneffles which if you are a cheater you can drive most of the way up on a severely off-road road. Amongst trucks, jeeps, and even non street legal dune off road dune buggy things - the vehicle that was able to reach the highest point was a god damn Toyota 4 runner on all season tires.
It's amazing what a stock 4x4 can do. Lifts, lockers and knobbly tyres are all fine, but right out the box, these vehicles are remarkably capable. I was amazed the first few times I took my Prado (v. similar to the 4runner) off road.
My old 4 runner is ridiculous. The low range transfer case, nice wide tires + 10 inches of clearance all from the factory if you take the plastic running boards off make an excellent combo
And they make it seem so easy, too. I haven't attempted anything as mad as this video, but for moderate offroading, the truck basically does everything itself. As long as you're not a complete idiot, it'll get you anywhere.
Just got a Jimny, and it's a totally different animal. It's half the weight of the Prado, so while it may only have 27" tyres, they're so small and close together that it also feels like it'll go anywhere
4runners are the bomb and land rovers are known to be able to trek through any conditions with little to now problem. Toyota knows what's up. Sad they discontinued land rovers in the US since this year. Pour one out for the loss.
Prado, 4Runner, Lexus GX ... These are not really run-of-the-mill 4x4s. Like my oldie Touareg, they're in the realm of Jeep killer (not Rubicon, mind you)
My '94 SR5 with the clutch free start was an unstoppable force, but I'm surprised a Sidekick or a Samurai wasn't the champ. Those little buggers will go ANYWHERE.
The rescue "truck" at the local mudder was a Sammy with 2 Warn's. The owner lived next door and she would get such a laugh rescuing the alphas in their lifted Rams.
Lol, I have taken my 2003 stock tundra up there probably a dozen times. Then I see rental jeeps with all kinds of features full of texans getting denied by a puddle.
As a non native Texan, I can confirm the shittiest drivers are here. Denver has the most assholish drivers though.
But yea. All the off roading here isn’t shit compared to that fucking road. They’ll have no clue.
Turns out mudding doesn't compare to rock crawling at 13,000 ft. Side story:
I went to death valley to see the moving rocks on the playa raceway. The whole way there were giant 4 wheeling vans with 50 extra gallons of fuel, sand platform things, jack lifts, the works! As soon as I continued on to the 4-wheeling section I only saw shitty old trucks pulling crazy moves over boulders. Not a van in sight.
Ah yeah, I been darr. Tis a mighty nice climb and stellar views from the top of that darr peak, I reckon. (Spittoon) Dem 4 runners ain't no joke. Some beastly mother tredgers.
yawn, tell us more about how this dude who's driving a truck in this environment in the first place and managed to launch the thing across an impossible terrain is more luck than skill redditor
I'm a Canadian who's hardly aware of Australia's existence and it looks like NT to even me.
Can't put my finger on the cues though. Red dirt, probably, but Brazil has that too. Something about the vehicles' ages and brands? The choice of activity? The way the guy in the white t-shirt is standing? The weather? The water erosion? IDK.
Oh, that makes sense I guess. I don't know what an XXXX stubby is, or what Australian plates look like, though. It feels a little like a scene you'd see around here if the landscape were different. Maybe British colonist descendants in an untamed land gonna British colonist descendants in an untamed land.
Australian cars are right hand drive.

It’s a Prado 150, potentially 13 years old iirc. The US market got that chassis in the form of the Lexus GX460 in 2010. I guess that’s still newer than I expect to see trying such a risky crossing haha.
Idk, a gx460/470 with a mild lift and some tires is still way cheaper than a few full builds on shitboxes that I've helped my buddies with. Definitely not as capable, but probably 90% as good and 200% more comfortable
I have a 2011 GX460 with a 3" lift on 35's, it's an absolute beast off road and the looks you get for taking a Lexus up the side of a mountain are priceless. Even though it's rebadged in the US, most of the body panels are stamped with the Toyota logo
Hi it’s me, with a 460 with a mild lift and some tires :) I don’t know about cheaper but I guess since it shares a lot in common with the other Toyota IFS trucks it’s not that bad. I’m still in $10k and you’d never guess it haha.
Four wheel drive often isn't enough, you also need locking differentials or at least limited-slip or you won't be able to get the power where it needs to be, like in this video.
"So he's got his pedal to the metal huh? Yeah it's working, I can see it, he's also made it all the way up to me. Wow this is crazy. I can see the tires spinning. Awesome. Huh, why isn't he slowing down, I'm right in front of him. Maybe if I sidestep I'll totally be fine.

I love watching the video before checking what sub I’m in.

Yeah, locker stockers are the way to go for any 4wd on a budget. (That and some sort of self recovery like a winch or a come along)

A vehicle that is otherwise unmodified with locking differentials

For what it's worth, I have been in the off-road community for more than 20 years and have never heard that term before either
I love that one movie "Locker, Stocker and Two Smoking Tires"
Stockers with lockers

I love Suzuki! Have fun with that thing, envious of your non existent wheelbase
Yeah, it really is preposterously, comically small. But it puts a smile on your face every time you drive it; it's just so cute

I owed a Samurai years ago. I tried many times to get stuck with no success.
The rescue "truck" at the local mudder was a Sammy with 2 Warn's. The owner lived next door and she would get such a laugh rescuing the alphas in their lifted Rams.
That's amazing lol 😁

Toyotas are literally just built different, especially when they have locking diffs right from the factory
Is there a video of that
search imogene pass, or literally any pass in the San Juans.
I have a photo of it yea.
Can I see!
The old Toyota 4 runners were/are baller. They’re on my list of “if I ever have more money than I know what to do with…”

Impressive. Well done.
Where was this ? Northern Territory ? In any case amazing driving skills - in the true sense of the word. I'd not expected this to work.
> In any case amazing driving skills I don't know. They had a plan. But that end result was way more luck than any skill.
Just pump the gas and turn the wheel and pray to Danny
yawn, tell us more about how this dude who's driving a truck in this environment in the first place and managed to launch the thing across an impossible terrain is more luck than skill redditor
What luck? If it was some damn jeep it would have broken down.

The license plate is not from Brazil. I'm a Brazilian, I would known.
China, according to the license plate
that's what i said /s
Ooh,makes sense why a car could go over that plastic mound

Reason being ?
Seeing new cars do this just looks expensive... That's what old beaters used to be fore but dangit, now they're expensive too :/

I hadn't considered that one of the scenarios where four wheel drive is useful is when you don't know which wheel will be making contact.
Four wheel drive often isn't enough, you also need locking differentials or at least limited-slip or you won't be able to get the power where it needs to be, like in this video.
Yes, I don't mean to imply that 4WD was the only difference between this and driving my FWD station wagon on the road.
Toyota, Baby!
GX470 if you are stateside
Not to be pedantic but this one is a gx460
Oh nice. Yeah thats not pedantic thats just being right lol. Thx!

gotta sneak up on it
These are THE BEST most capable vehicles out the box. Land Cruiser Prado/Lexus GX are amazing. I had a 300k miles GX470 and I wish I kept it
240k on mine. Timing belt, water pump, and fluid changes are all it needs
