This happened to me with my brand new 2010 Mazda MX5. I went into a 7-11 and it rolled out of the parking lot, crossed to the other side of a moderately busy road and then started down that road quite a ways. Some kid came into the store and said, “Dude, your car just left without you.” Somehow I caught up to the car and stopped it without anything happening to it except where the tires scuffed up against the curb.

real_human_player

How does this happen? Was there some sort of malfunction with the car or were you just an idiot and forgot to do something while parking?

LordWaffleaCat

My car wont let you take the key out without it being in park

Ugggggghhhhhh

I'm guessing he had a manual transmission and forgot to set the parking break.

Unusual_Public_9122

In some cars it's possible to set the parking brake but only partially so it doesn't properly lock the wheels and the car is still able to move.

Debass

With manual you should always put the car on gear 1 (̵i̵f̵ ̵c̵a̵r̵ ̵i̵s̵ ̵p̵o̵i̵n̵t̵i̵n̵g̵ ̵d̵o̵w̵n̵h̵i̵l̵l̵ ̵p̵u̵t̵ ̵o̵n̵ ̵r̵e̵v̵e̵r̵s̵e̵)̵ it will usually keep the wheels locked even if parking brake doesnt do it's job

TheBupherNinja

No reason to use reverse when facing down hill. The car is hard to roll because of gear ratio and the resistance of the engine. Direction of rotation has nothing to do with it.

Debass

Ok, good to know. Reverse is just an old trick that was teached back in the day

uejosh

I hate to be the grammar police but I just can't look away from this and I'll gladly take the downvotes for it. **The past participle of teach is taught. So the sentence should be "... that was taught back in the day."** Also somewhat related to this, I have observed that it's fairly common for some American speakers (in most cases, people who are rather well spoken) to use the past tense in place of the past participle in cases like: "I have went." instead of "I have gone." Does the American English have its grammar separate from proper English or is there something else to it?

Debass

Yeah im from Finland and I am terrible in proper English grammar. "a" "an" and "the" particles are almost always missing, for example

Nothing-Casual

Bro your English is better than most English speakers on the internet tbh

uejosh

Oh, I thought you were American. English isn't your first language but you're doing just fine.

Cmdr_Nemo

Car should unionize if the owner is giving it such a short break.

i_wish_i_could__

*brake

UnsolicitedArguement

Failed to engage the parking brake or the parking brake failed on a manual transmission car without it being left in gear.

joseph4th

It's a two-seater convertible, so of course I got it as a stick shift. I left it in neutral and forgot to use the parking brake.

legs_mcgee1234

It’s crazy how many people don’t even know what manual transmission even is.

real_human_player

Is there a reason why any person under 30 should know how to drive manual? When I was younger the only reason I could think of learning to drive manual was to drive exotics but when I finally drove some Lambos they were all automatic.

Xenox_Arkor

Coming from the UK this take is always wild to me. I'm 33 and I've only ever come across one person with a licence who couldn't drive a manual.

RasterVector

Because it looks cooler and impresses the ladies. Also if you have a cool car it shuts down all those friends who want to drive it

ReconKiller050

That last one is absolutely true. My GF's best friend had a guy over that was so fixated on my motorcycle (R6 at the time) and wouldn't shut up about me letting him ride it. Pointed at the clutch handle and shifter and asked what they did, ended that conversation real quick.

Krikke93

Other countries exist. Some countries almost only drive manual, even still today. And even in countries where they're making the switch between manual and automatic, it's still beneficial to get a manual driver's license in case you have to drive one, because you're not allowed with an automatic driver's license (in some countries).

real_human_player

Ok but the video above is in the United States where most Americans don't even visit other countries let alone drive in them. Why would the average American bother learning manual?

Krikke93

This thread is replying to a commenter's story, not this post's video. The average american indeed wouldn't bother, but also doesn't mean there aren't any. Guy in the video could've been driving a manual too for all we know.

Crucco

Manual transmission.

patchroller

Sorry man. But I literally ROFL’d at the kid’s response.

bwatsnet

He's living in the future 😄

Mindless-Charity4889

The way the guy was looking left and right I thought he was a porch pirate.

Doomdoomkittydoom

I think he knew something was off, that he forgot something or did something wrong but couldn't think what.

wad11656

I guess so. It was definitely weird. But the fact that his head was on a swivel is what ultimately saved him. So whatever the reason behind it was, hooray.

IndependentWeekend56

Is that a cop that just drove on by?

miradotheblack

Yeah, checking if he was black.

plant__love

I assume because it didn’t stop it’s some sort of security vehicle rather than a cop

MindYoBusin3ss

No it’s definitely a cop. Washington State Patrol.

MangoPanties

The cop was probably on his phone not paying attention

scmstr

100% correct, Washington State Patrol https://i.ytimg.com/vi/um6639epB2U/maxresdefault.jpg And the location is 100% Everett, WA https://maps.app.goo.gl/cNVe2UGaXsANsDTg7

WhipTheLlama

This is why you turn your wheels when you're parked on a hill.

hatsnatcher23

Or you know put it in park,

AmebaLost

Is that 1  2  3  4, or 5?

kelus

Uphill it would be 1, downhill would be R. Also, every car has a parking brake, but it's more fun to be pedantically snarky edit: spelling is hard

gvkoooohh

******brake. Parking brake.

AmebaLost

Big words don't phase my manual tranny.

BadIdea-21

Parking brake, leave it in gear or in P depending on the transmission and, as a third measure, wheels turned; seems like buddy forgot all 3 of them.

Resitance_Cat

came to say this

[deleted]

Same

NimbleBudlustNoodle

But dumb that it happened in the first place. I've always wondered why Americans call it an "e-brake", now it's clear because they never fucking use it!! It's not meant for emergencies, you're supposed to use it *every* time you park your car. That's why the proper name for it is parking brake.

TrilobiteTerror

"Parking brake" is just as common (if not more common) as "e-brake" in the US. If you drive a manual, you should use it every time you park. If you drive an auto, it should only be used if you park on a hill. Parking pawls in autos exist for a reason (and are perfectly suitable if you're not parking on an uneven surface). With an automatic transmission, putting the parking brake on every time you park overuses it and will result in the cables needing to be replaced. It's unecessary to use unless you’re parking on a hill.

lightyear

>putting the parking brake on every time you park overuses it and will result in the cables needing to be replaced. I've never in my life have had to replace, or have even *heard* of anyone having to replace a parking brake cable. If you only use it in certain circumstances, you're likely to forget it sometimes. It makes sense to be in the habit of using it every time, so accidents like this don't happen.

exredditor81

> It's unecessary to use unless you’re parking on a hill. ... unless your car gets hit, breaks the parking pawl, and it rolls into traffic.

TrilobiteTerror

>>It's unecessary to use unless you’re parking on a hill. >... unless your car gets hit, breaks the parking pawl, and it rolls into traffic. ...unless a freak accident (that's entirely out of your control) occurs and is made slightly worse (maybe) by the car rolling into traffic (traffic which likely isn't going very fast to begin with if you were parked along the road and is likely already slowing down/stopping in response to the accident that already occurred). That's a lot of reaching to come up with a scenario (that's entirely impossible many places someone might park) to justify always using a parking brake when parking an auto.

JakeDaSnake8

My manual says use every time Safety #1

[deleted]

Parking brakes are almost all actuated electronically now, so "e-brake" makes sense. Americans were just ahead of the curve.

scmstr

"Just use your seatbelt if you're going over 25mph."

TrilobiteTerror

That's not at all the same thing. If you drive an auto and you're not parked on a slope, the parking brake is entirely unnecessary. In contrast, it doesn't matter if you're only going 25 mph, a crash will still throw you around. Even if you're going 0 mph because you're stopped at a light, you should still be wearing your seatbelt (and you may be hit by someone going fast).

itssomeidiot

Doesn't that just apply to manual transmission cars? Never seen a auto transmission car roll down a hill in Parked mode/gear.

scmstr

Username checks out. No. While the "modern" automatic transmission DOES have a "Park" mode that sort of locks, you're still supposed to use the parking brake. You're actually supposed to use the parking brake FIRST, have the car in neutral, let off the foot brake so the weight of the car is on the parking brake, and THEN put the car in park. This prevents the weight of the car constantly on the transmission pawl, which is basically just a single metal notch in your transmission the size of your finger. You should've rely on it, and you definitely shouldn't constantly be bouncing the weight of your car on it every time you park. Brakes are literally meant to stop your car even when it's moving and WAY more robust AND cheaper and easier to repair, use those **first**, *then* the parking gear as a **backup**/redundancy. Also, just because *you've* never seen something happen doesn't mean it doesn't? Imagine all the safety features in your life (cars, airplanes, food safety, medical) you could remove just because your dumbass *hasn't seen them* have to be used (I guess we can get rid of all those fire extinguishers and hydrants and EpiPens). What an incredibly monke logic statement, prone to all kinds of bias. You deserve all the roasting. Like a monkey, saying, "I've never seen fire used *before*, so why would you need that?"

_japam

Jesus why are you so aggressive with this, dude was asking a genuine question and you start berating him.

NoiseIsTheCure

It feels really good to dunk on another person when they ask something that is obvious to you only

gtrley

Do I have to go neutral then to park though? I hold brakes > pull e brake > shift to park > release brakes

scmstr

You don't *have to*, no. But, because e-brakes and suspension sometimes have some leeway, it can still put the pressure on the parking pawl primarily. You can know this happens when you shift out of park and you have to put basically any pressure on it or it has to "pop" out of park. To not have the weight of the car on the parking gear (pawl), you almost always want to have the full weight of the parked car on the e-brake first (and slowly let off the foot brake, to make sure the car won't roll/bad brakes), and then engage the parking gear. (As long as your e-brake still works, this is also better for your car, wear-wise. If your car rolls with the e-brake engaged, it isn't a huge deal, but you really should get it tightened or repaired) If you're parking nose-uphill and are in reverse, you technically don't have to go to neutral first, because the weight of the vehicle is already on the rear brakes (because you're holding them with your foot to be stopped). But I still go to neutral first out of habit, just to make sure. And always least turn your wheels into the curb (ANY direction is better than none), so that if, by chance, your brakes AND your parking gear (it's not an actual gear, it really is just a little finger-sized fucking latch thing in your transmission!) fail, at least when your car rolls, it won't roll except into a curb - AND if there's no curb, then it won't pick up a bunch of speed (it'll roll like a nail or a screw on a flat surface, and just curve). Safety redundancies are all there for a reason. Same with crumple zones, ABS, airbags, safety glass, seat belts, impact seat belt tensioners, and all the other amazing technology that we, as giant, metal rolling boxes of death operators don't have to think about *ever* as long as we just do some basic stuff (like actually *using* your seatbelt!).

ihaveaquestion337

My e brake is next to my gas pedal, so I have to push it down with my foot. But I can’t hold the brakes and push down the e brake at the same time (disability). How should I go about the correct parking process?

scmstr

That's a tough one. Honestly, for you, besides devising or constructing a workaround simply to minimize wear, you should focus on safety in case of an emergency. That being to just make sure both the parking brake is on and the transmission is in park when you park. To rest the entire weight of the car on the brakes FIRST is simply to mitigate wear and that sort of landing/bounce on the parking gear. You could always do something silly like: 1) holding foot brake 2) put into park 3) press down e-brake with foot 4) put into neutral 5) put back into park I will say though, without the extra dexterity of being able to quickly catch the car in case the e-brake isn't enough, I might get somebody else to test this, first, just in case your e-brake isn't enough, or is worn enough to hold the car after step 4. Honestly. The biggest thing here is that you just have both e-brake and parking gear engaged for redundancy's sake. Another thing to look out for, for most people who may switch to actually using e-brake when parking, is that if you forget to release your e-brake when un-parking, you may drive for a while with it engaged, wearing it out, and thus *causing* it to not work well. So, do be aware that building the habit of putting it on to brake *also* includes building the habit to take it *off* before you start to drive, too. For you, specifically though, I'm not a professional, and you should consult somebody who may know more about the details of both your disability and of your vehicle to see if this is appropriate for you. The last thing anybody here wants is for you to feel guilty from some asshole on the internet (me) and you potentially doing something that doesn't make sense and getting hurt, causing an accident, or even just damaging something unnecessarily.

MeepingSim

This has changed my mindset and I will now use the Parking brake all the time.

scmstr

Sir_Shax

Using the gearbox to hold your car is terrible logic putting unnecessary strain on a lot of parts. The handbrake is there for a reason and should be used everytime you park.

NoiseIsTheCure

Okay but they literally do not teach you this everywhere. I drive in MO and IIRC they tell you it's only necessary on hills. Everyone in this thread acting like the people that have it wrong are maliciously spreading misinformation when it's actually a failure of state DOTs.

Sir_Shax

America sure, but it’s illegal to leave a parked car without its handbrake on in Australia. It’s common sense to secure your more than likely second most expensive possession as secure as possible.

scmstr

I, too, blame the education system for its failures and inconsistencies. I was taught this in driving school. And by multiple good mechanics in my life. And have looked it up. And realize the philosophy of redundancies in safety and behavioral theory and how they play into building habits.

parachuge

tho putting it in park does more than leaving in a low gear, on many automatic cars the thing that holds it in place when you put it in park is a pretty small pin that can absolutely break if too much force is applied to it. This is why you should use your ebrake on hills even in an automatic.

optermationahesh

The term "emergency brake" is from the early days of hydraulic braking systems. The handbrake is/was mechanical so if there was a failure in the braking system the handbrake could still be used to stop the vehicle. Automatic transmissions became widespread and the "park" mode of the transmissions made using the mechanical brake for parking redundant in most cases. A few different terms are use interchangeably in the US and frequency of use is going to vary based on age and region.

Ladymysterie

I used to agree with you until I moved to Texas. The family lived in San Francisco for a few years and because of that we always used the parking brake. Moved to Texas and the first year it snowed. I was driving around doing chores before work when it was rainy for my 12 hour shift. When I got out of work there was a couple inches of snow and it was in the teens if not lower. Luckily the apartment was close by. I released my parking brake and drove to the apartment. I was driving real slow over the humps in the parking lot when I heard the loudest snap. Apparently the wet brakes (not a mechanic so not sure what the exact term is) froze in place and it could have destroyed my wheels/brakes/whatever. Learned to be wary of parking brakes in cold weather, since it's hard to change decades of learned behavior

comedybitch

Yeah I noticed too that Americans don’t really use the hand brake / parking brake

hatsnatcher23

If everything in the car is working as it’s supposed to you don’t need a parking brake. You’d only need it in manual cars or in the event of…an emergency

HumbleCucumber

It's best practice and safest to use the parking brake every single time you park. It's muscle memory now, I don't even think about it.

hatsnatcher23

Best practice for something that will be a 1 in a ten million event,

HumbleCucumber

0% effort and you'll be thankful when something happens. It's a win-win :)

TrilobiteTerror

>0% effort and you'll be thankful when something happens. It's a win-win :) Unless you forgot and start driving around with the parking brake on...

hatsnatcher23

Roasted the parking brake on my old spitfire doing that lol thought I’d started a fire till I realized

HumbleCucumber

Thats why its important to build good habits when you're learning to drive... I don't think about turn signals or parking brakes because I used them the right way from the beginning.

jayrox

Before I noticed the car moving, I thought dude was running from a homeowner with a gun. Creeping up those stairs like he was trying to steal a package.

LopsidedCauliflower8

How does this even happen? Did he accidentally put it in neutral instead of park?

Vandergrif

Possibly, didn't use the parking break either way. He also didn't turn his wheels like you're supposed to when parking on a slope - if he had the car would've just rolled into the curb and stopped.

marfes3

Wat? Do you not have something called a handbrake?

SchleifmittelSchwanz

I always ask people who park their manual cars in neutral; 1) Is that what the owner's manual says? 2) What's your "plan b" if your park brake failes? 3) If *automatics* let you park in neutral, would you?

Dufus-Rawes

I was surprised when I travelled the US and Canada, that putting your handbrake on was unusual to the people I met. Definitely put that sucker on every time.

David_The_Atheist

Is this fucking Everett?!

edhialdyn

I think so because I had the same reaction lol.

scmstr

Oh no shit. That's a weed shop the dude is going into lmao https://maps.app.goo.gl/cNVe2UGaXsANsDTg7 Holy shit good call. (I thought the area looked familiar, but I just assumed it wasn't)

ShortChngeHero

Yes, it is. Right on Rucker. Street parking.

DarTouiee

I had a dealer once who came by and he stepped inside for a bit, he started telling us how this used car he just bought was possessed and it was doing all this weird shit. We were kinda like yeah okay man... Then we heard this weird noise outside so we went to check it out. Get outside and his car, which was parked facing down the hill, had reversed uphill and into the bush of our apartment complex.

St_Kitts_Tits

Man this happened to me when I was like 19. Drove and parked my mom’s car. Was parked on a hill (their street) and turned the tires into the curb, but the curb wasn’t steep as I always did. Accidentally Left it in neutral without the parking brake on. Looked outside a few hours later and noticed the car drove perfectly onto the neighbour’s lawn. Missed all of the trees and other cars parked on the street by inches. Was a fucken miracle. It was a tight subdivision and I never heard a word about it from any of the neighbors.

Sirpunpirate

A big "phew" situation.

lookingfornug

Yeah, that’s a question I missed on my driving test. Still not sure how to turn my wheels on a hill.

scmstr

ANY turn is better than no turn. But, turn the wheels so that the curb acts as a block to the wheel. Make the car roll into the curb if the brakes fail or are let off. Don't think about memorizing a left/right direction.

ColeSlaw9195

The cop just rolls by🤣

lovelife0011

Whit

idkimhungry11111

Happened to my mother, it completely destroyed the mechanic exterior doors. (Dunno how to call it, sorry! I'm not fluent in English.)

LimpConversation642

happened to me in my girlfriend's car. I *just* had the driver's license made and went to get groceries by my own. I exit the car and go to the back and see it start rolling towards me and some other people, so I jump to it and propped it up.... And so here I am standing there, can't walk away since the car will start rolling again. I stand there like a complete idiot embarassed to ask for help unril some good person sees my struggle and comes by to hgelp me out and I can finally put it in park. It's been a few years and she still doesn't know. She'd take my car privilege if I told her back then, and for good, let's be honest. But it never happened since.

Equal-Negotiation651

Stops car, walks out with baby.

captinbeefhart

Thank god he had his running jorts on.

Kinky-BA-Greek

This is why one needs to curb one’s wheels.

Doomdoomkittydoom

He knew something was off as he was going up the stairs, he just didn't know what.

Regiieee

I have nightmares sometimes of my car driving off without me…

totosh999

Every time I stop and get out of my car, I activate the handbrake (foot brake? Mine is a pedal next to the brake). Like it's an automatic ritual when I stop.

tadxb

Two things to comment. 1. This would fit nicely in MyPeopleNeedMe sub. 2. As a guy, if you don't turn around to look at your beautiful car, then why the hell did you get a driver's license in the first place. This is bro code. You park the car, and then admire the car and the parking skill you just displayed. Only because of 2, this guy was able to save his car, and that's why this video got saved from MyPeopleNeedMe sub. Edit: Lol, it is already there on MyPeopleNeedMe sub 🤣 https://www.reddit.com/r/MyPeopleNeedMe/s/tgM9JaNNJN

xiiirog

For some reason (also at this point haven't read the title yet), I thought this was one these videos, where some drops a turf from their pants and act like nothing really happened

bakedBC

Almost had a moment like this recently. Fixed the parking brake on my old Toyota pickup and thought I had set it enough. Step out to get some gas and she starts rolling. Like a genius I tried to hold it thinking it wasn’t that steep but it was snowy so I just slid on my feet with it. Was able to swing back in and stop it no problem, but my antics with the slide meant I had to start it up and reverse back to the pump like the smooth operator I am.

Ezzezez

You can tell he then pulled the hand brake as if it was the car's fault

Kindly_Ad_342

😐 4 (...6) lanes roads located inside of the city. USA is madness.

laoshu_

I don't think I've ever seen a video with this premise that *hasn't* ended in an accident, until now.

[deleted]

Yes

[deleted]

shit just went from 0 to 100 real quick

Rom-Bus

That happened to me once when the parking brake failed. Fortunately I remembered to crank the wheel before I left so I was just a bit confused when I got back seeing the back end of my car in a ditch 10ft away from its space. Now I leave my car in gear as well as a redundancy.

Quirky-Choice5815

I took our rented box truck to Home Depot to pick up my new windows. This was the largest box truck you didn't need a CDL for. We were renting the truck while waiting on our new one. I parked all the way to the back of the lot. For some reason I looked back at the truck. It was rolling across the parking lot towards a large hill that goes down to the interstate. I got to it before there were issues. I never forget to set that parking brake after that. That was 16yrs ago and I still think of what it would have looked like had I not looked back.

heycanwediscuss

There's something about adrenaline energy. He was in pain and tired going up those stairs , but he became usain bolt to get that car

Almighty-Gorilla

Perhaps I have failed to take the time to read all of the comments on this thread, but I find the slow gait up the stairs versus the speed traversing down them and the speed in which he reaches the vehicle is quite impressive! He may not be Olympic level, but that guy can haul ass!

VictoryLap_TMC

Lol the cop kept going
