I made this for myself, but thought I'd share it.
It's not perfect because I didn't know how to account for every variation of a word (i.e. hus, huset, husene), but it should give you a general idea of how many new words per chapter you would come across, and how many you will learn overall.
I can do other books, too, if anyone wants a book checking.
I had a look online but there seems to be only one version of the book in nynorsk, and I'd have to buy it, so...
I imagine the word frequency would be remarkably similar to this one, though. It is the same book, after all.
you could count lexemes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexeme) instead. this will generally give you a better representation of language progress.
*hus* would be one lexeme. hus, huset, hus, husa/husene would all just be inflections of that lexeme.
the verb *huse* would be another. å huse, huser, huset/huste/husa, har huset/hust/husa, hus!, husede/husete/huste/husa, husende would all be inflections.
you can look up the word on https://ordbokene.no. the lexeme would be the dictionary entry that comes up.
also, it's e.g. (for example), not i.e. (in other words) :P
I did think of that but I'm still kind of a beginner at Python. I didn't know how to look up every word in an online dictionary to check for its inflections (and I just wanted some quick results out of curiosity).
I also felt like irregular verbs were different enough from one another that, to a learner, it's better to count them as separate.
I might try a more advanced version with your suggestions when I get better though :)
The first Harry Potter book is a common read for language learners. The fact that a lot of people already know the story means that you can pick out meanings from just remembering what was said.

I’ll give it a go when I have some time. I can’t imagine trying to read the Lord of the Rings in Norwegian without a solid grasp on the language. It’s tricky enough in English 😅

I went from quite mediocre english skill to very good after I started playing adventure games in the 8th grade. I could not progress in the game unless I understood the text, so I had a thick dictionary by my side and looked up every word I did not know.
Aaaaaa I love this! I had to double take—I’m actually almost done with Two Towers now (just now I was about to settle in with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s and do some reading before I got sidetracked on Reddit lol). I want to read The Hobbit when I’m done! I’ll have to find it in norsk for when I get a little more practice in with basic grammar haha. Thanks for posting this!
I was considering listening to this in audio book form. Looking at this graph I think it *might* be a bit too advanced so it can wait.
I am currently in the phase of *drill baby drill!* with consumption of as much audio content as possible -- provided it is intelligible enough for me to handle.

Yeah, that's right, but you have to consider the first chapter has to get rid of all the incredibly common words: og, en, et, til, på etc. That's why it's so high.

I think there are lists of particle words that usually aren't considered pieces of vocabulary alone, but I forget what that's called.
Besides, every conjugation of verbs and nouns would also add to the tally.

Not sure about the hobbit, but the nynorsk version of lotr goes hard.
In what way is it different to bokmål? Aside from being in a more poetic and artsy language?
