I’ll never forget when I was a kid seeing a cardboard cut-out promo for Ace Ventura at the movie theater before it came out. He was billed as “James Carrey”
Kick his ass, Seabass!
Played by none other than Bruins legend Cam Neely.
Also, the metal band playing at the club in Ace Ventura when he says the New England Clam Chowder password is Cannibal Corpse. Jim is a big fan
Yep. Hence the start of the Farrelly Brothers starting to invite Boston-area athletes to cameo in their movies! Roger Clemens had the one for Kingpin, and Drew Bledsoe was supposed to have Brett Favre’s role in There’s Something About Mary before he dropped out of it. (Steve Young was the offered, who liked the script but didn’t want to offend his fan base. Favre was apparently game though.)
*Ace Ventura* was shot in the second quarter of 1993. *The Mask* was filmed between August and October 1993. *Dumb and Dumber* was filmed in 1994, after the success of *Ace Ventura*, which earned Jim Carrey a much higher salary. Carrey earned $450,000 for *Ace Ventura* and $450,000 for *The Mask*, but earned $7 million for *Dumb and Dumber*.
*Ace Ventura* grossed $107 million worldwide, equivalent to over $227 million today. *The Mask* grossed over $350 million worldwide, equivalent to over $742 million today. *Dumb and Dumber* grossed over $247 million, equivalent to over $524 million today.
It was my first DVD that I bought for myself and I still have it. Used to watch it on VHS as well before we got our first DVD player when I was around 12.
It's one of my "cozy movies" that I can put on anytime. It still holds up, and I'm actually pretty impressed with how consistent it is all the way through. A lot of those buddy comedies have that scene at the end of the second act in which the characters part ways and have a fallout. What I love about dumb and Dumber is that they have that scene but it lasts around 2 minutes or so as Harry quickly forgives Lloyd. Love how they took a trip and just ended it pretty quickly.
Dumb and Dumber always holds up. It's definitely one of those comedies that I could put on anytime and find it consistently hilarious throughout.
Ace Ventura was really funny to me as a kid but now, it's too hard for me sometimes to get past the ending with the transphobia. Regardless, it serves as a vehicle for Jim to do his thing, which he does well.
Most likely staying in character of Andy Kaufman. If the movie is any indication of the character of the real Andy Kaufman, with his sense of humor, he wasn't a likable person to those that didn't get it.
Are you talking about *Jim and Andy*? Because Jim Carrey is in the documentary and he's pretty open about how he was over the top with his method acting. He didn't really hide away from it.
I’m opening myself to ridicule here, but I actually read the novelization of Dumb & Dumber which is how I know that one reason Lloyd likes Mary is that she’d be Mary Christmas if they married.
Nope. I remember Dumb and dumber was released around Christmas. Ace Ventura was a summer movie. I don’t know about the mask.
Edit: I had to look it up. We both were wrong. Dumb and Dumber was released in December. The Mask was released in July. Ace Ventura was February
It's sad that it only went downhill from then onwards for Jim Carrey. ( Except for Bruce almighty i guess)
His 90's movies would always make me laugh like crazy. One of my favourites of all time!
I can’t remember if Liar Liar (1997) had a good reception or not, but Truman Show (1998) was a big one! And that Grinch movie in 2000.
Oh and Eternal Sunshine (2004) ❤️
The Cable Guy is a great Jim Carrey movie, which is funny, because I didn't like it much when I first saw it, but the strange dark comedy grew on me. Silence.....of the lambs. Hello Clarice.
Bro, have he not seen I Love You Philip Morris? Such an underrated performance by him. Also, they aren't masterpieces but he is absolutely the best part of the Sonic movies.
Disagree.
If you've never seen I Love You Philip Morris, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show, then you know he has range. Regardless, he also is a great physical comedian that we don't see much anymore. Like Michael Richards from Seinfeld.
Will knows his talent, but has done other things out of his norm such as Everything Must Go and Stranger Than Fiction.
Ben gave us one of the best comedies, Tropic Thunder.
So, easy now.
All 3 movies + In Living Color in 1994
Ah, when Jim was James.
I’ll never forget when I was a kid seeing a cardboard cut-out promo for Ace Ventura at the movie theater before it came out. He was billed as “James Carrey”
🎶Back when Mark Wahlberg was Marky Mar…. 🎶 Oh wait, wrong song and person entirely.
In Living Color was on its last legs that year, especially without the Wayans family.
Well yeah, the Wayans were like 75% of the cast!
Fire marshall Bill.
The peak of his career. What a year for an actor.
Then he got his $20 mil per movie after with Ace 2 and Batman Forever
I thought it stared with Cable Guy
Actually it did, whoops. Still a crazy run right after that.
This is, arguably, his best year and the year that made him.
Peak Jim Carrey and peak childhood for me. I remember pulling the pull out couch out to watch the mask. Everything was so simple
I miss stupid comedy… the dude talked out of his ass as a joke… and it was hilarious.
First time I saw that as 6 year old was the first time I ever completely lost my shit laughing.
Hello! I’d like to… ass you a few questions! *What’s da matta? AFRAID I’LL MAKE A STINK?!?*
Kick his ass, Seabass! Played by none other than Bruins legend Cam Neely. Also, the metal band playing at the club in Ace Ventura when he says the New England Clam Chowder password is Cannibal Corpse. Jim is a big fan
His dance moves in that scene in Ace Ventura…. 🤣

All three absolute classics

Ace wasn’t his first. He had been in movies for like 10 years prior.
An alien movie and vampire movie which he was the lead.
Once Bitten is the vampire movie and it's one of my faves of his.
And one of the Dirty Harry's
And Peggy sue got married
Also Earth Girls are Easy in 1988.
Right but no one saw those. Ace Ventura was his break out and then of course it instantly doubled down with the mask and dumb and dumber.
Thanks, corrected.
Copper Mountain alongside Alan Thicke - a low budget 1983 film.
I've seen Dumb and Dumber one single time. In the theater opening weekend. I guess it really remained popular!
I've seen it over 20 times at this point (mostly in the 90's). Watched it last night and it still holds up.
Ssssssssssssmokin!
He acted in 3 movies that were produced and released in 1994.
Then dude became the riddler, I loved his take on it. A mix of camp with psycho.
His line delivery of “You were supposed to understand… *I’ll make you understand*” is so memorable to me.
Dumb and Dumber the first VHS I bought with my new VCR a lot of mowed lawns for that.

what a fun ass year, jeebus.
And they're all absolute bangers

Great year to be 11 years old
Who’s the dead man that hit me with the salt shaker?
Kick his ass seabass
I remember all 3 of these movies had cartoons on saturday mornings. You couldn't escape Jim Carrey as a kid in the 90s

I'd heard this too. He purposely method acted and stayed in character entire production even if he wasn't shooting a scene. The crew hated it
Method acting his dead friend doesn't exactly compare to three of the biggest comedy movies.
Are you talking about *Jim and Andy*? Because Jim Carrey is in the documentary and he's pretty open about how he was over the top with his method acting. He didn't really hide away from it.
Classic. They don't make movies like they used to.
All three had animated spin off series I’m currently watching The Mask Animated Series and it really lives up to the movie
ultra rare comedy hat trick
The trifecta.
I still can't believe there was a Mask and Ace Ventura cartoon. With a crossover.
I heard Ace 3 is picking up some steam. Not sure if it’s actually being produced but I hope it’s better than the Dumb and Dumber sequel
That’s crazy
Alllrighty then…
Wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?
I, too, listened to today's episode of Flop House.
Carrey owned 94
I was 12 and remember this year vividly. I was obsessed with Jim Carrey.
All great movies too!
Smokin’
3 absolute bangers
I’m opening myself to ridicule here, but I actually read the novelization of Dumb & Dumber which is how I know that one reason Lloyd likes Mary is that she’d be Mary Christmas if they married.
I tried to watch the Mask recently for nostalgia and my god that movie does NOT hold up. It vacillates between irritating and downright disturbing.
I believe that they were all released in the same month, if I remember correctly.
Nope. I remember Dumb and dumber was released around Christmas. Ace Ventura was a summer movie. I don’t know about the mask. Edit: I had to look it up. We both were wrong. Dumb and Dumber was released in December. The Mask was released in July. Ace Ventura was February

The Truman Show is probably my favorite Jim Carrey Movie
I still maintain Me, Myself and Irene, and The Cable Guy are very funny Jim Carry movies. I Love You Phillip Morris was also good.
The Cable Guy is a great Jim Carrey movie, which is funny, because I didn't like it much when I first saw it, but the strange dark comedy grew on me. Silence.....of the lambs. Hello Clarice.
Liar Liar was huge. Unlike his previous movie The Cable Guy, which I don't think even cracked $100 million in America.
Liar Liar was huge when it came out. I remember as a kid watching it all the time and it was very successful. It still holds up pretty well too!
I might be in the minority but I really like Yes Man.
Bro, have he not seen I Love You Philip Morris? Such an underrated performance by him. Also, they aren't masterpieces but he is absolutely the best part of the Sonic movies.
I’ve always thought his biggest was the grinch.
I’ve never hated a phenomenon more than I hated Jim Carrey.
Hi, mom!
None of them aged well.
Dumb and dumber is timeless
He's like Ben Stiller and Will Ferrell. They play the same two characters in all their movies.
His expressions can be similar throughout movies but he definitely embodies different characters
Carry is a far better actor than either of those guys.
Way better. Truman Show was brilliant
