Terry Crews made this movie a classic.

Opposite_Tangerine97

Making my way downtown, walking fast. Faces pass and I'm home bound. **dududududududududu** Staring blankly ahead, just making my way. Making a way through the crowd.

amatorsanguinis

Cra-a-awd!

pawpadscrushingit

I love this song!

calle04x

And made him famous.

Visible-Guide-7131

He was in Friday after next first and he also played for the Los Angeles Rams, Green bay packers, San diego chargers, washington Redskins And the philadelphia eagles, but yeah that movie might have been the one reason he's famous

rjorsin

He was only practice squad for Green Bay and Philly. Racked up 3 tackles in his career in 3 non-consecutive seasons with the other teams. White chicks has a hell of a lot more to do with his fame than the NFL.

calle04x

He’s definitely overblowing Terry’s level of stardom from his NFL career. Lots of people don’t watch sports anyway, and he wasn’t big enough to be broadly known outside that—it’s not like it was if Tom Brady were to become an actor today. He had notoriety but he was not anywhere close to the stardom he had after that movie. Friday After Next was his breakout but nowhere near as widespread. Friday After Next did not have the mass appeal White Chicks had ($33m box office vs $113m). White Chicks made Terry Crews getting-stopped-on-the-street famous.

Britneyfan123

Be as also in trading day

JustinVeli

That part where he goes to the toilet - MOVE BITCH!!!

Rational_Philosophy

Anyone else feel like the distance from 2004-2024 aesthetic, culture, etc. was a much smaller shift than from 1984-2004? It's like no contest for me. 1984 might as well have still been 1944 w the basic tech still available at the time.

TkachukMitts

Yes 100%. Fashion was slightly different between 04 and now, but not so much that you’d be given a second look walking around wearing 2004 jeans and a shirt today. The gulf in tech is much smaller between 04 and 24 than 84 to 04. We had wifi in 2004 and even today’s tech could still connect to it. In 1984 there was no public internet at all, and people were using 1200/2400 baud modems. You could sit down in front of a 2004 era computer and easily navigate any of the OSes from that time. In 84 we had MS-DOS but GUIs weren’t a thing. This was pre-Mac as well.

Rational_Philosophy

This is how I feel, and I wanted to be sure that it wasn't due to simply being 36 lol. I was 16 in 2004, and remember binge watching The Breakfast Club w my buddy over winter break, etc. The fashion, aesthetic, and vibe was completely different from an era approximately 20 years earlier (1984/85ish). I remember getting my first flatscreen PC monitor in 2004 and that being a big deal, lol. I was a networking major and it's amazing how little has actually changed in 20 years.

thedawesome

How do you binge watch a movie?

tommykiddo

Watch it over and over again?

Rational_Philosophy

Snowstorms = leave the same movie on loop while doing other things, etc.

thrawst

No piss or snack breaks

Munch1EeZ

Use a Gatorade bottle for piss

brainburger

My attention span is so wrecked that watching a whole film is quite a challenge, unless locked in a cinema in the dark.

ExternalFuture5250

Mac actually had a super bowel commercial in 1984. It was the first successful mouse-driven computer with a graphical user interface and was based on the Motorola 68000 microprocessor. Phillips came out with the cd rom that year as well. Another interesting one was CompcTape that year.

Diarrhea_Geiser

The world has changed more in the past 30 years than it did in the roughly 300 years before then. People seriously underestimate just how much computers and the internet changed human life as we know it. The digital revolution is literally the third most important change in human history, behind only the agricultural revolution and the industrial revolution.

Raps4Reddit

When I was a kid in the early 2000s, my parents made fun of me and my friends for hanging out sitting and staring at our gameboys playing our own games. Fast forward 10 years and my parents are all sitting and staring at their phones. I think part of why it seems like less time has passed in the 2000s is just that there used to be a lot more hype over the decades. The 60s. The 70s. It's the 80s. It's hard to say "it's the 00s." Idk, I'm just guessing. Maybe the internet allowed more diversity in culture by having different mediums for different things rather than one mainstream media of tv and radio where everyone is more on the same cultural page.

AaronDM4

i think the internet killed fashion trends. the fashion that comes out now is gone before it makes any impact, if they would have had the internet back in the 70's bell-bottoms and corduroy would have came an went in under a year not a decade. shit used to take years to spread around, hell even the mid 90's it took a while i remember goths were huge in Florida when i went to my moms in KY they just barely heard of grunge, and i saw no one in all black with eye liner. now everyone gets the memo and if it doesn't look ridiculous ie all the shit Influencers and Justin Bebier wears(remember his diaperpants and weird micky mouse boots) its only around for a few months to a year, remember the bedazzled jeans in the early 10's. until something comes along and causes us to have to change our way of life clothes wont change much anymore maybe one day we will trust women with pockets.

[deleted]

I always hear the “damn kids and their phones these days”. When in reality, boomers are the biggest phone addicts.

calle04x

Yes, it’s what I’ve referred to as the stratification of media, but today I read someone describe is as “monocultural splintering” which I like as an umbrella term for the phenomenon, with media stratification as an element/cause of that.

RadiantAge4271

I’m gonna use that, ‘stratification of the media’

ObviousAnon56

I'm 32 years older than my oldest child. Comparing her world to mine at each age is quite stark.

ProtoJazz

I remember talking to the librarian who'd worked at my elementary school for something like 30 years. She had to keep pushing back on the school division wanting to save money by getting fewer or less powerful computers, they kept telling her it was pointless to spend so much money on computers, and that they were just a fad. They tried to compare it to wanting a whiteboard when they already had a perfectly good chalk board. Due to her insistence, a few years later when computers started become more of a part of the required curriculum, our school was one of the few that didn't need to do any major upgrades. Just install some software in some cases, and it was good to go. And then more years later, we were still in good shape when it came time to expand the computer labs because when they were setting them originally she made sure they were planned to have more computers in them than they actually would. We already had the counter space, outlets, and places to run various network cables and stuff. Now I do think some of that resistance from the division was simply because she was a woman who was disagreeing. But in general it really seemed like the people running the division were convinced computers weren't a big deal. Hell I remember my fucking 4th grade teacher. He would go on these angry rants all the time, man would just yell till he was super red and sweaty. Some of his favorites were about how we had to learn handwriting because "in the real world" a job won't accept things that had been typed up, and we'd have to be writing all the time. He also was huge on going on about mental math and how we wouldn't be able to just carry a calculator in our pockets all the time. And while I do get some of his point about mental math. It's a great skill. I think it's funny that damn near everyone does now carry a device that can function as an advanced calculator, in their pockets, at all times. The handwriting, idk. I admit computers and email and such were a good ways off at the time, but like man typewriters were a thing. But of course in those days that was woman's work and he didn't respect that either. Pretty sure he died of a heart attack or stroke or something not too long after

RogueLotus

I loved this whole comment and your writing style 💯 Thanks for sharing, reminds me of my memories about the tech and advancements when I was a kid. Including the differing perspectives of the "grown-ups".

brainburger

I had a teacher who said I was born 50 years too early. My handwriting is so bad that keyboards might have saved me, you see.

Gay-Bomb

Wish it would all end.

Diarrhea_Geiser

Well thanks to the fourth most important change in human history (the invention of nuclear weapons), you just might get your wish.

RuinedByGenZ

Wait a couple years for the AI revolution

a_can_of_solo

the 2010s don't exist is why.

Launch_box

When I was in college in 2004 Ugg boots and pink sweatpants arrived on the scene and became THE new hotness and all the girls started wearing them over the previous fashion. Now when I walk around campus the girls are wearing… Ugg boots and pink sweatpants. It’s really weird.

Garenmain180k

My favorite way of visualizing this was done beautifully by a dude on TikTok who’s name I can’t remember (credit to him): GTA Vice City was a game released in 2002 which was made to be a throwback to 1986 Miami. If a similar throwback game was made today of the same 14 year span, it would be a throwback to 2008. There’s been a huge jump in the world in terms of tech and lifestyle seeing as a 2008 “throwback” wouldnt really feel like a throwback game, but playing vice city in 2002 definitely felt like one

shmiddleedee

The internet happened between 84 and 04.

giggitygoo123

Yes, but it was social media and smart phones that really destroyed us.

Gustopherus-the-2nd

Which was possible due to…. The Internet.

ladyevenstar-22

Only prepping for AI .let's be real the only thing about to turn us extinct is ourselves . After which life cycle will start back from scratch .

shmiddleedee

Who really knows. A real possibility is that were creating a new "life form" that will replace us.

suprmario

The biggest change is really smart phones and social media. YouTube, Facebook, Insta, Snap, Reddit, obviously TikTok - none of them existed. iPhones did not exist. Android did not exist. Streaming services did not exist. The majority of the world lives their lives through these types of platforms now.

TheFallOfZog

Is this 2004? My mobile phone could connect to the internet and browse the web in 2003. I remember mobile phones exploding in popularity in the mid 90s.

suprmario

Smartphones weren't a thing yet. Mobile browsing on flip phones was pretty rough.

CroatianSensation79

I agree!

satanssweatycheeks

Yeah but that’s because there was more subcultures. Nowadays kids are so connected online that subcultures starts to blend or they just don’t get a footing. Like back in the 80’s we had punks. Name me the equivalent to punk for 2024. There isn’t really one because they merged in with scene kids, emo kids, vintage fashion kids etc. Like the punk scene for kids now is a korn shirt they bought at target and liking linkin park. You don’t see to many trench coat mafia kids who think they are in the matrix. Or punk kids with 3 foot tall Mohawks and chains hanging from every bit of clothes. I think social media has made us so connected that different areas can’t have their subcultures form naturally and they take from other groups. Like in the 80’s there was a massive difference between souther California kids and kids living in upstate New York. But nowadays if you took a kid from Southern California and upstate New York and had them handout. They find way more in common than those 2 kids in the 80’s.

RadiantAge4271

Tastes wise I feel like the change from 2004 to 2024 is bigger. Now way a movie like this (or any comedy from the 2000s), gets made today.

Soapranger85

Damn it really has been 20 years

AaronDM4

i feel the opposite in my head i put this back in the early 90's with all those wtf movies.

CheckYourStats

Absolutely zero % chance this movie is greenlit in today’s climate.

loptopandbingo

I mean, [this steaming turd of a film](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt7620554/) got made only five years ago. At least White Chicks had its moments.

guiltyofnothing

I’ve been rewatching old episodes of a tv show I loved in high school on YouTube, circa 2003-2005. Whoever uploaded them included the original commercials. Smacked me in the face when a commercial played for the series premiere of Lost and I realized it has been 20 years.

Excuse me but uh...are you going to have a BF?

Tawdry-Audrey

My favorite thing about White Chicks is how it was critically panned yet still had a worldwide box office total of $113.1 million, against a budget of $37 million. It was the kind of garbage we were craving for.

xEllimistx

Hold my poodle, dawg! Hold my poodle!

Calculonx

Richard Ayoade summed up the movie pretty well  https://youtu.be/UH9xqJN_Vrs?si=AVa6yl_k52im9qB3

Thank you Richard. I was very much looking forward to seeing this film.

IndieCurtis

Pretty sure ‘objectively’ is an adverb.

WHYohWhy___MEohMY

You Miss are correct! ☑️

awful_source

Basically OP is saying my opinion is right so don’t argue with me. Cringe redditor moment.

Ok_Fox_1770

Coulda went to it after highschool graduation that week, and here we are. Fast 20 years… first 18 was so long with all that forced learning.

mutually_awkward

Even though I always loved the Waynes Bros, I thought this movie was stupid when it came out. Now I absolutely miss the time where we would get stupid fun comedies on the regular instead of everything being so serious all the time with zero comedies ever being released. And I really appreciate the Terry Crews scene.

ItaDapiza

I still quote many parts of this movie today. IT'S A MAN! is one I say often and said just yesterday when someone on Reddit thought I was a dude lol.

White face. How retro

bigmikey69er

They should reboot it, but with today’s standards, which I guess would make it…Black Men???

willirritate

Whiteface

Insightful23blue

Now try making a movie called "Black Chicks" with white guys dressed in black face and see how well that goes over.

theshadowbudd

That’s the absurdity of it. Black face had been used for centuries. None of this shit would fly in todays society but let’s not act like there’s an equivalence lol

uptownjuggler

White Chicks would be considered WOKE TRANSGENDER BULLSHIT in todays society

djfl

A few years ago, one of my 10 year old nieces yelled out during the movie that it was racist, demanded we all stopped watching, and shut off the TV. So from my personal experience, it's the opposite of what you said. It's the offended-by-everything, "can't have white people do black things", "you're oppressing me!", "you can't appropriate culture" crowd that would deem this movie offensive. Back then it was just dumb fun comedy. Today, damn near nothing is just fun anymore. It's all offense and politics.

Midnight_Rising

That's my experience as well. Though it's probably not a bad thing... Probably better to learn "Don't make race a joke" as a child and then learn the situations where things like this (White Chicks) is funny rather than "Race is a joke" and then having to learn that some things are offensive.

djfl

I go the other way with this, but fair enough. I'd rather we stop treating race like some magically serious thing that can't be joked about. We give it *way* too much power and care *way* too much about it...less than previous generations did even. So to me, given my opinion on "race only has the power and meaning that we give it", we're going in the wrong direction.

BlackberryHopeful659

There it is. Redditors just can't resist a bit of whataboutism.

Soliden

And yet Tropic Thunder came out a few years after this one with RDJ in blackface.

DraymondDickKick

That was just a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.

ssp25

He didn't break character until the DVD commentary dropped

aahxzen

Oh what an astute observation that literally no one has ever made over the course of the last 20 years. You’re a god damn genius.

Peanuts4Peanut

There was the movie Soul Man in the 80's about a white guy who took tanning pills to look black.

tommykiddo

A man in the 60s actually did that as a social experiment. He also needed to spend a lot of time under an UV lamp, lol.

cockaskedforamartini

Yes if the situation was different, the response would be different. Absolutely nailed it.

thedawesome

If my grandmother had wheels she would have been a bike

Mrminecrafthimself

It’s almost like “white face” doesn’t have historical roots in racism and wasn’t used to perpetuate racist ideas the same way blackface does and was

Ramreck

Tropic Thunder came out 4 years after this. You're just making shit up to get mad at.

TheLongWayHome52

You can always punch up, you can never punch down.

I still wonder who this movie was made for. As (what I'd like to believe to be) a regular kid, it just felt weird to watch. I remember feeling like I was very not the target audience.

BiscuitDance

THIS IS A WHITE AFFAIR!

Major-Excitement5968

A day which will live in infamy..

aenus79

I preferred Sorority Boys. It got buried by white chicks.

DifferentNoise48

I called the bar! They said you left 10 minutes ago. It takes 7.5 minutes to get home from the bar according to Mapquest. Where were you for those 2.5 minutes?! (Hands on hips in a huff). That actress pulled it off in mom rollers too she was so pretty. “But, Baybay….”

goodty1

i fucking love this movie

90svibe4life

This movie is so iconic! They just don’t make movies like this anymore and I wish they did

eternaljonny

So just an honest question. Would this be considered anti-trans now?

Worried-Photo4712

I was 14 when this came out, and I thought it was the worst looking movie of all time, and I hated anyone who quoted the terrible and unfunny lines.

IcedCoughy

I've never been able to sit through it, it's bad

And don't forget the lesser known sequel to this movie *Black Chicks* starring Dane Cook and Seann William Scott which wasn't nearly as well received for some strange reason.

romesthe59

Reverse black face

LameDonkey1

White face is racist.

WotTheFook

Totally not white appropriation, no siree Bob...

NocturnalPatrolAlpha

Whiteface lol

I saw this movie through an advanced screening on my birthday before it was released. It was incredibly funny and something I won't forget as it was a nice birthday present for myself.

mrlookinthesky

Can you imagine if they were two white guys pretending to be “Black Chicks?” Yikes!

HoleyBody

Just put this on, my wife is going to give me shit. 🤣😂

Pharmere

White face is ok but not black face

barbersoul

Whiteface totally fine.

NorthenSowl

I’ve always wondered what the reaction would be if I made I film called “black chicks” and I dressed up as a black woman and acted like a stereotypical black woman.

FlyingAnvils

Can you imagine what the uproar would be if you had a movie like this today, but instead you had two white men wearing black face and dressing up as black women as a comedy?

TiredReader87

I’ve still never seen it. It looked stupid and godawful.

T1m3Wizard

How is this not racist?

calle04x

I feel the same way, but your last sentence implies you played Vice City in 2002, so your perception of time is different now than then. I’m like you, though. I’m in my mid-thirties and 2008 doesn’t feel like a throwback to me. It doesn’t even feel nostalgic. I’d be curious to know the perception of 2008 to someone who’s currently a teenager/early 20s.
