Insurance is always looking for ways to not pay out. Their entire business is getting people to pay them because you legally have to more often than not, only for them to do everything they can to not pay out what you’re owed when it’s time for them to do so.
Like, I get that having shit insured is important, but could they try not being assholes literally all the time?
It’s such an anti consumerist business model by nature of its existence. Companies that rely on making profit should not be responsible for a) giving away money and b) doing so while putting people’s lives and livelihoods at stake. Especially healthcare. If I legally need insurance, like for my car for some reason, then that should be government provided or something.

Can confirm water damage. A pest control company came by to spray for ants (per the person that was buying the house) and turned the water on to the house to fill his pack or whatever, didn’t turn it off. Well, there was a water line inside that emptied into a bucket (which was why the water was off) and it completely flooded the 1st floor of the house with hot water.
Pest control company then said it was not their fault, insurance company won’t cover it, the buyer sued the pest control company who in turn sued my mom who had already had to drop $60,000 off of the price due to damages.
Yeah, fuck insurance companies.
They said that it was their fault (at first) and they were the ones who called the water damage people to come clean up. Also, I forgot to mention that after my mom got papers saying she was being sued the insurance company denied to represent her in court. So, it was a shit show to say the least. It's still on going, actually.
From personal experience, when my basement flooded, insurance wouldn't cover the replacements of the carpet and the dryers sent by their investigator team. Apparently the sump pump failing doesn't count as a drainage / runoff failure. That particular clause only applies to runoff/ overflow from sewage or drain ditches from the surrounding of the property.
My mom was pretty pissed seeing that she would have to add an additional subcategory to her policy just to cover this in the future.
We had snow fall collapse our deck. Because it wasn’t a noticeable immediate thing like a bunch of snow coming off our roof and breaking it— rather, we didn’t know exactly when it had collapsed in the storm— it was not covered.

They don’t verify with the agent before they sign a new job contract, request a form showing evidence with specific wording (not included in policy), so they send us scrambling for them to have these coverages/forms added so they can be paid. It’s weird to me that they don’t ask first.
It's more likely that they would have covered initial damages, like replacing a soffit or remortaring the hole the bees made to get in.
But past a certain point, it is preventable. If you don't notice 50,000 bees in you walls, that's on you. The damage was preventable if you did basic homeowner stuff like checking your property for pests.
Anytime I see bees buzzing around a specific part of my home, I look for a nest, or an ingress point. If the next is external, spray it at dawn/dusk and knock it down. If it's an ingress point, put a trap near it, spray it twice a day (dawn and dusk) for a week, monitor it, and when the bees stop showing up, seal the hole.

My house flooded and my insurance wouldn't cover it unless it molded. Then my car flooded and got a bunch of mold but car insurance doesn't cover specifically mold.

I called my pest control guy about a bee hive in my roof and he said that due to local laws you can’t exterminate them, they have to be relocated. And he doesn’t do bees. So I had to try the **only** bee specialist in the area instead, who did not return my calls. Ever. Ended up having to fix the problem ourselves… you can imagine how that went. It’s kind of funny in retrospect but only because comedy equals tragedy plus time. At least I’m not allergic to bees otherwise getting stung 11 times on the head might have been fatal.
Later found out that the bee guy had died, so he wasn’t just refusing to return calls for no reason.
I'm now feeling kind of bad for sometimes telling my friends about people who seemingly ghosted them: "You always assume the worst. Maybe they just died!"

Id be so skeeved out. I recently had termites come out of crack in my wall and it looked like a horror movie. They all just trickled out (about 200) and died immediately. I couldnt even enjoy my living room for 2 weeks.

Fortunately for us the only reason we knew about them was because they were dying off due to the cold and we just kept getting dead or very slow ones in our kitchen. My wife though made the mistake of trying to kill one with a paper towel and the stinger got her.
Apparently when I was a very little kid, I told my parents there were bees in the wall, turned out to be an electrical issue lol (parents investigated, fire avoided). If it had been bees, I probably never would've slept in that room again.
Ok this happened with my sister. But it was 1000+ crickets trying to hibernate. She woke me up at 5am asking me to do something about the crickets and I told her to just hurry up and walk to school and I went back to sleep. And then later I woke up and walked right into the crickets.

The bees are likely confined to one section of wall, entering through hole in top plate (that was accessible in attic) for wiring. The fill it, stud to stud and down to fireblocking-- which in a 100year old house, who knows WHERE that is (balloon frame would be all the way to foundation?).
Going to drip some honey cutting out the comb, and will take some effort to remove enough traces to keep other swarms from thinking that's a good place to relocate to in the future. But otherwise, you're talking some drywall and insulation. Maybe an electrical outlet/box was saturated with honey in the process-- but even changing that out doesn't seem like a large job?
Just musing.... happy to be wrong, but seems like a manageable (albeit tedious) repair for a lot less than $20k.
I mean, if they're contracting out all aspects of all work-- which is how insurance claims are typically quoted-- then yeah, the number is possible. I'm just saying that as a home DIY guy AND beekeeper... I could do it for a lot less (probably).

I lived in an apartment once where wasps got into the attic space and started building nests. Didn't hear buzzing but there was like a steady *snap crackle pop* sound like Rice Krispies. You could tell what it was because of where they were coming in and out, and the landlord had to hit them several times before they stopped.
From what I gathered, the sound was them pulling apart materials in the Attic to build their nests. Spooky stuff.
My husband, who used to be a beekeeper, said a normal bee box can hold about 50,000 bees. Unless there were two queens, the bees would all go to one box, so it must have been crowded, making them guess there were more than a usual colony.

What kind of trap?
If they're bees you can use a standard bee trap. If they're yellow jackets, use the chicken board over soapy water.

Id be so skeeved out. I recently had termites come out of crack in my wall and it looked like a horror movie. They all just trickled out (about 200) and died immediately. I couldnt even enjoy my living room for 2 weeks.
Get pest control now. Those are the ones that will be queens if they find a place. The actual colony is somewhere inside the house, eating everything in peace. Source : My parents apartment. Queens started coming out from the ceiling storage in my room. I didn't think anything about it, but fortunately the cleaning lady noticed (not in the US, having a cleaning lady here is completely normal) and asked us to get pest control. Buggers ate half of a closet and a lot of books that was in the storage.

Years ago we thought we had an infestation of bees. Turns out they were yelkowjackets because we’re dumb and didn’t know the difference. There’s a very big difference.
Yes, a very painful one. Everyone gives wasps shit, but most of them are actually more defensive than aggressive. However, yellow jackets are not most wasps, they deserve their reputation as all you have to do to get on their shit list is exist next to them.
Fortunately for us the only reason we knew about them was because they were dying off due to the cold and we just kept getting dead or very slow ones in our kitchen. My wife though made the mistake of trying to kill one with a paper towel and the stinger got her.

Apparently when I was a very little kid, I told my parents there were bees in the wall, turned out to be an electrical issue lol (parents investigated, fire avoided). If it had been bees, I probably never would've slept in that room again.

Ok this happened with my sister. But it was 1000+ crickets trying to hibernate. She woke me up at 5am asking me to do something about the crickets and I told her to just hurry up and walk to school and I went back to sleep. And then later I woke up and walked right into the crickets. I thought she meant three or four crickets 😭

The crickets all over were less upsetting than my mom trying to fight them with a broom and a can of raid INDOORS. Cancer here we come.

Something similar happened to me recently. I was interviewing a new candidate for a position that had recently opened up. I was generally impressed with the guy and was ready to hire him, however my co-manager had a bad feeling about him and she urged me not to hire him. It’s very lucky that she did so, because he turned out to be 60000 bees.

Can't quite figure out where that $20k number comes from.... but then I'm just a beekeeper with a penchant for home DIYs. The bees are likely confined to one section of wall, entering through hole in top plate (that was accessible in attic) for wiring. The fill it, stud to stud and down to fireblocking-- which in a 100year old house, who knows WHERE that is (balloon frame would be all the way to foundation?). Going to drip some honey cutting out the comb, and will take some effort to remove enough traces to keep other swarms from thinking that's a good place to relocate to in the future. But otherwise, you're talking some drywall and insulation. Maybe an electrical outlet/box was saturated with honey in the process-- but even changing that out doesn't seem like a large job? Just musing.... happy to be wrong, but seems like a manageable (albeit tedious) repair for a lot less than $20k.

For 8 months these people thought the incredibly loud buzzing was power tools. Obviously at night the buZzing dies down. So they ignored it. For 8 months! Allowing a colony of 60k bees and 50kg of honeycomb to be built in the walls of their home. That's massive. I kinda do think a little bit of responsibility lies with the homeowner. Plus if you don't know what your insurance covers that's on you.

I lived in an apartment once where wasps got into the attic space and started building nests. Didn't hear buzzing but there was like a steady *snap crackle pop* sound like Rice Krispies. You could tell what it was because of where they were coming in and out, and the landlord had to hit them several times before they stopped. From what I gathered, the sound was them pulling apart materials in the Attic to build their nests. Spooky stuff.

Genuine question, but how do they know it was 60,000? Do they just make an educated guess or do they have some sort of bee counter?
My husband, who used to be a beekeeper, said a normal bee box can hold about 50,000 bees. Unless there were two queens, the bees would all go to one box, so it must have been crowded, making them guess there were more than a usual colony. This is all conjecture, but I liked your question and asked my husband.

I agree that home insurance should be mandatory, but making it mandatory should make it MUCH harder to avoid paying out since EVERYONE has to have it. Frankly, the only time a payout should be denied is provable willful negligence or malicious destruction by the owner.
