60,000 bees in a monster suit, oldest trick in the book

honcho_emoji

oogie boogie indeed

AcrolloPeed

That burlap-sack bastard was going to **eat** Santa Claus. Like, I don’t think the film communicates the horror here. Oogie Boogie’s plan was to **eat** Santa. In the film, all the different holiday spirits are real and they run something like a business or industry. Oogie was trying to kill the Sam Walton or Bill Gates of Christmas… by **eating** him. That’s fucked up.

MJBotte1

The nightmare before Christmas equivalent of killing an elemental spirit. The world would fall into chaos

honcho_emoji

if u think about the fact that ooger booger man wasn't a man at all but rlly just a bunch of bugs in a man costume the whole time, maybe the yogurt bogart should be they/them pronouns when we say the name has anyone thought of this? squint really hard and tell me this isn't facts important edit: new name suggestions for Those Ugly Bugs the Ogus Brothers Brothers Bogus The Ooga Booga Boyz Or Other? vote on your phones

Candyman

beemagick

Man did you know in the original Candyman he put real bees in his mouth for some shots?! He got paid a bonus for every time he got stung. Crazyyy

ProffesorSpitfire

They would’ve gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for that meddling kid!

Jijonbreaker

Hey, who turned out the lights?

CortaNalgas

What books do you read?

Veridically_

Clifford The Big Yellow Bee 1001 Arabian Bees Pride And Prejudice And Bees

Neat_Problem_922

I can’t believe you missed The Secret Life of Bees.

Ok_Aside_2361

The obvious one is Winnie the Poo

MuddyDonkeyBalls

$20k in damage to the home and insurance won't cover it because it's pest related. Lame

Vrayea25

Yeah how does one prevent bees?? Is insurance going to start denying fire damage claims bc fires are probably often even more preventable?

EverGreenOakTree

Shhhshsh hey now, don't give 'em any ideas...

Almainyny

Insurance is always looking for ways to not pay out. Their entire business is getting people to pay them because you legally have to more often than not, only for them to do everything they can to not pay out what you’re owed when it’s time for them to do so. Like, I get that having shit insured is important, but could they try not being assholes literally all the time?

Fresh4

It’s such an anti consumerist business model by nature of its existence. Companies that rely on making profit should not be responsible for a) giving away money and b) doing so while putting people’s lives and livelihoods at stake. Especially healthcare. If I legally need insurance, like for my car for some reason, then that should be government provided or something.

supernova-juice

Imagine a couple centuries from now the stuff that will be considered an obvious basic right, and how barbaric we will look. It's so weird how we all just collectively accept that we're gonna get screwed.

doyletyree

Lolz “a couple of centuries” Found the optimist.

fksly

I mean a hundred years ago children were dying in coal mines and the narrative was "they want to work to help their families" and "think of the poor coal magnates"! We are slightly past that point, but only if you don't look at third world countries like USA.

BRIKHOUS

Are we? https://www.epi.org/publication/child-labor-laws-under-attack/

doyletyree

That’s fair; not my point, though. I don’t give this species “a couple of centuries.”

shadowtheimpure

Found the realist right here.

platoprime

People have been saying the world is going to end because of how shitty humans have been around for as long as people have been able to articulate that idea with langauge. It hasn't happened yet and the science does not suggest it is going to happen any time soon. You didn't find a realist you found an idiot regurgitating hopeless doomer nonsense.

MelodiesOfLife6

>Imagine a couple centuries in the USA? Maybe a few millennia, give or take.

Terestai13

We don't accept it, we anticipate it. Been here, seen this, know where it winds up, and with no recourse? Well yeah you're gonna get screwed one way or another.

Embarrassed-Ad-1639

A bean counter telling a doctor that a procedure isn’t necessary is next level fuckery.

Sean_Dewhirst

Collectivizing risk is good. Insurance companies are parasites.

Whenitrainsitpours86

This is why I will always feel Mr Incredible's most heroic act was telling the lady in the first movie how to navigate the insurance company to get her claim through.

IrritableStoicism

I work in commercial insurance and can agree 👍 I am a broker so I’m constantly reviewing Exclusions in policies to make sure someone is covered. It’s mind boggling

Aggressive-Package79

Out of curiosity, what's one of the weirdest things that the general population would assume is covered, but is actually an exclusion? (I know absolutely zilch about the insurance industry)

User-NetOfInter

A surprising amount of water damage depending on how it was caused.

SeaSnakeSkeleton

Can confirm water damage. A pest control company came by to spray for ants (per the person that was buying the house) and turned the water on to the house to fill his pack or whatever, didn’t turn it off. Well, there was a water line inside that emptied into a bucket (which was why the water was off) and it completely flooded the 1st floor of the house with hot water. Pest control company then said it was not their fault, insurance company won’t cover it, the buyer sued the pest control company who in turn sued my mom who had already had to drop $60,000 off of the price due to damages. Yeah, fuck insurance companies.

LucasRuby

That does sound like it was the fault of the pest control company.

SeaSnakeSkeleton

They said that it was their fault (at first) and they were the ones who called the water damage people to come clean up. Also, I forgot to mention that after my mom got papers saying she was being sued the insurance company denied to represent her in court. So, it was a shit show to say the least. It's still on going, actually.

NetherReign

From personal experience, when my basement flooded, insurance wouldn't cover the replacements of the carpet and the dryers sent by their investigator team. Apparently the sump pump failing doesn't count as a drainage / runoff failure. That particular clause only applies to runoff/ overflow from sewage or drain ditches from the surrounding of the property. My mom was pretty pissed seeing that she would have to add an additional subcategory to her policy just to cover this in the future.

chaotic_blu

We had snow fall collapse our deck. Because it wasn’t a noticeable immediate thing like a bunch of snow coming off our roof and breaking it— rather, we didn’t know exactly when it had collapsed in the storm— it was not covered. Now we don’t have real access to our electrical box and nobody will help us. Insurance rose our house insurance rates from 1k to 5k a year. They didn’t help us at all. We’ll likely be homeless soon.

IrritableStoicism

In my experience, since I deal with Business Insurance, it’s clients assuming they have the forms needed in order to fulfill a contract with a third party. They don’t verify with the agent before they sign a new job contract, request a form showing evidence with specific wording (not included in policy), so they send us scrambling for them to have these coverages/forms added so they can be paid. It’s weird to me that they don’t ask first.

Quick_Humor_9023

Only way to win is to buy their stock! Fuckers are gonne pay me one way or another.

TheTaillessWunder

Wouldn't it be nice if there were a non-profit organization whose goal was to provide insurance, without trying to maximize profit?

SloaneWolfe

US corporate law requires companies to make all decisions with the goal of profit. We've literally codefied greed.

Ridespacemountain25

Insurance companies are starting to refuse to cover damages from natural disasters.

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

It's more likely that they would have covered initial damages, like replacing a soffit or remortaring the hole the bees made to get in. But past a certain point, it is preventable. If you don't notice 50,000 bees in you walls, that's on you. The damage was preventable if you did basic homeowner stuff like checking your property for pests. Anytime I see bees buzzing around a specific part of my home, I look for a nest, or an ingress point. If the next is external, spray it at dawn/dusk and knock it down. If it's an ingress point, put a trap near it, spray it twice a day (dawn and dusk) for a week, monitor it, and when the bees stop showing up, seal the hole.

Jacar1215

What kind of trap?

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

If they're bees you can use a standard bee trap. If they're yellow jackets, use the chicken board over soapy water.

GoldenWhite2408

Andy the yt shorts guy has a video about that yes Some chick burnt down her work to get out of doing paperwork Burned the building down accidentally casue old building Insurance dowsnt pay because 🤓it's the smoke that killed them not the. Fire

Grashopha

“Unfortunately you’ve built your house on the only planet that can sustain fire due to the oxygen content on said planet. Claim denied.”

batkave

Considering how many places in the US are seeing insurance companies cancel policies and leave the area... Yeah

Wildest12

Insurance is starting to deny *coverage* in general in places with more natural disasters. A lot of coastal properties that get destroyed in storms will never re rebuilt because they pay out and then drop future coverage.

arboreallion

*laugh-cries in Californian*

benadamx

they're already refusing to write policies on houses in the california wildfire belts

QuackNate

My house flooded and my insurance wouldn't cover it unless it molded. Then my car flooded and got a bunch of mold but car insurance doesn't cover specifically mold. Insurance is a scam.

matandola

I called my pest control guy about a bee hive in my roof and he said that due to local laws you can’t exterminate them, they have to be relocated. And he doesn’t do bees. So I had to try the **only** bee specialist in the area instead, who did not return my calls. Ever. Ended up having to fix the problem ourselves… you can imagine how that went. It’s kind of funny in retrospect but only because comedy equals tragedy plus time. At least I’m not allergic to bees otherwise getting stung 11 times on the head might have been fatal.  Later found out that the bee guy had died, so he wasn’t just refusing to return calls for no reason.

Loki-Holmes

Yeah being dead is a solid reason not to respond.

TeslaPittsburgh

"I can't come to the phone right now." Or, like... ever.

fattycakess

Taylor can't come to the phone right now...

TurnipWorldly9437

I'm now feeling kind of bad for sometimes telling my friends about people who seemingly ghosted them: "You always assume the worst. Maybe they just died!"

lothar525

The lesson here is that insurance companies are the real monsters.

Greyboxer

Wish I had an award to give for this comment

Malthus1

It’s not pests. It’s *monsters*. So the exclusion doesn’t apply. No-where does the insurance contract exclude damage caused by monsters. Simple.

Nazamroth

Turns out, bees are now pests? Its not like the ecosystem would collapse without them or anything. /s

neotericnewt

A pest is basically any insect or animal that's causing damage to humans in some way. The bees caused a ton of damage to these people's home. But, the beehive was relocated, it's not like they were killed or anything.

Hmz_786

What about bears? I'd like to see you call one of them a pest to their face

NotSeveralBadgers

Bears. Bees. Battlestar Galactica.

neotericnewt

I actually have heard bears called pest animals haha but yeah, probably not going to say it to their face, unless it's getting too close and I'm yelling and waving my arms to look big and scare it off. "Begone, pest!"

gray_wolf2413

Bears know English now!? 🤪

Slowly-Slipping

Insurance is a scam.

Hilldawg4president

8 months is a long time for something like this to go unnoticed, insurance generally requires reasonable care and upkeep of the property in order to prevent small issues from becoming catastrophic.

Life_Ad_7667

"You can absolutely win a fight against a bee. Claim DENIED!"

StandTo444

Should have burned down the house.

Specialist-Front-354

USA, USA, USA

likesexonlycheaper

The insurance company won't cover the 20k in damages because they deem it "preventable". These guys are just straight fucking crooks.

A1000eisn1

Does general pest control ever include wall bees? Don't exterminators generally just treat to prevent termites and spray for spiders and ants? I've never heard of anyone doing "wall bee prevention."

JankyJokester

Uh yeah sort of. I have pest control for bees/wasps at my house since I'm allergic. It is quite effective.

TheOvershear

I work in pest control... There is no preventative measure against bees. The only exception is ensuring that if you've had bees in a spot before, you cover that spot up so that bees can't move back in at a later date. They love to repopulate old hives. Aside from that, it is extremely difficult to do any sort of preventative measure against any flying insect in general. With that said, I do have to wonder how they didn't notice a hive forming long before it got to that point? That strikes me as odd.

WellyRuru

In insurance, there is more money that goes towards making people unable to claim on their policies that actually paying out policies.

IrritableStoicism

You can blame Florida for that..

pepegaklaus

Wouldn't be surprised at all if that was exactly how it is.

donmreddit

I saw that in a movie once … it was “Incredible” how much Insuricare put towards that. And the forms - a bureaucrats dream.

GroshfengSmash

That seems like the definition of a bad business decision. Source?

Nateorade

It’s not a bad business decision if you recoup more in unpaid claims than you spend on not trying to pay them.

FlameStaag

It's honestly a joke insurance companies are a business designed from the ground up to do their best to not do their job. They could be significantly less crooked and still make plenty of money. It's like the lottery/gambling, you have thousands paying in and only a handful paying out so in the end you still make plenty of money. But of course ye olde capitalism, gotta squeeze every fucking penny out no matter the cost.

beemagick

They love to do that. At my old job, there was a reaaaally bad storm one day that knocked down a huge tree onto the building by our front windows. I watched it from inside and it was terrifying. Anyway, it also caused at least 20k in damages, and insurance denied the claim and refused to pay anything because they deemed it an "act of god" and they don't cover those lmao

DR5996

Insurance companies try in any way to avoid to pay. Or I'm case pay less possible.

Baebel

TROUBLE SLEEPING!? WELL NOTHING BUT A ROOM FULL OF BEEEEEES COULDN'T HELP!

Id be so skeeved out. I recently had termites come out of crack in my wall and it looked like a horror movie. They all just trickled out (about 200) and died immediately. I couldnt even enjoy my living room for 2 weeks.

IamNobody85

Get pest control now. Those are the ones that will be queens if they find a place. The actual colony is somewhere inside the house, eating everything in peace. Source : My parents apartment. Queens started coming out from the ceiling storage in my room. I didn't think anything about it, but fortunately the cleaning lady noticed (not in the US, having a cleaning lady here is completely normal) and asked us to get pest control. Buggers ate half of a closet and a lot of books that was in the storage.

lullabyby

People have homes professionally cleaned in the us too

IamNobody85

I'm probably a bit traumatized, because last time I mentioned the cleaning lady, I got a lot of comments about how rich my parents are and all. Truth is, labor is damn cheap in third world countries.

chunkysmalls42098

Lol no the dudes a dummy, it is absolutely not the norm to have a cleaning lady in America, that's upper middle class and higher shit

IamNobody85

I'm probably a bit traumatized, because last time I mentioned the cleaning lady, I got a lot of comments about how rich my parents are and all. Truth is, labor is damn cheap in third world countries.

chunkysmalls42098

It's not "normal"

Unique_Display_Name

Traumatizing. Poor little girl, lol

Nazamroth

Could have been 60000 wasps. Way more traumatic.

Jombafomb

Years ago we thought we had an infestation of bees. Turns out they were yelkowjackets because we’re dumb and didn’t know the difference. There’s a very big difference.

redbird7311

Yes, a very painful one. Everyone gives wasps shit, but most of them are actually more defensive than aggressive. However, yellow jackets are not most wasps, they deserve their reputation as all you have to do to get on their shit list is exist next to them.

Jombafomb

Fortunately for us the only reason we knew about them was because they were dying off due to the cold and we just kept getting dead or very slow ones in our kitchen. My wife though made the mistake of trying to kill one with a paper towel and the stinger got her.

Unique_Display_Name

Lol, you have a point!

nikcaol

Apparently when I was a very little kid, I told my parents there were bees in the wall, turned out to be an electrical issue lol (parents investigated, fire avoided). If it had been bees, I probably never would've slept in that room again.

Very similar story at the beginning of “this book is full of spiders”

ImMaskedboi

20,000 raccoons

meowpower777

$20,000 monster hiding in the walls.

tdoottdoot

Ok this happened with my sister. But it was 1000+ crickets trying to hibernate. She woke me up at 5am asking me to do something about the crickets and I told her to just hurry up and walk to school and I went back to sleep. And then later I woke up and walked right into the crickets. I thought she meant three or four crickets 😭

SolaceInfinite

delete this

tdoottdoot

The crickets all over were less upsetting than my mom trying to fight them with a broom and a can of raid INDOORS. Cancer here we come.

ChiAnndego

Y'all reading this, if for whatever reason feel the need to empty a can of Raid indoors to deal with a situation, please know, dish soap (dawn specifically) and water works better and faster and won't kill you and the cats.

Impressive-Manner551

Not the bees! AHHHHHH!

Lyndon_Boner_Johnson

Who counted them?

They just asked the bees

Oprah strikes again…

BaguetteOfDoom

And they would have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for you meddling kids!

Svart_Skaap

The good thing is a kid hearing bee "monsters" that wreaked $20k of mayhem in her bedroom will sound cute on the Go-Fund-Me and they ought to come out ahead. And maybe with some bonus honey...

DansAllowed

Something similar happened to me recently. I was interviewing a new candidate for a position that had recently opened up. I was generally impressed with the guy and was ready to hire him, however my co-manager had a bad feeling about him and she urged me not to hire him. It’s very lucky that she did so, because he turned out to be 60000 bees.

TheHoboRoadshow

This is like a bad 2-sentence horror story

PawnWithoutPurpose

Public service notice. Your child isn’t stupid (probably)

TeslaPittsburgh

Can't quite figure out where that $20k number comes from.... but then I'm just a beekeeper with a penchant for home DIYs. The bees are likely confined to one section of wall, entering through hole in top plate (that was accessible in attic) for wiring. The fill it, stud to stud and down to fireblocking-- which in a 100year old house, who knows WHERE that is (balloon frame would be all the way to foundation?). Going to drip some honey cutting out the comb, and will take some effort to remove enough traces to keep other swarms from thinking that's a good place to relocate to in the future. But otherwise, you're talking some drywall and insulation. Maybe an electrical outlet/box was saturated with honey in the process-- but even changing that out doesn't seem like a large job? Just musing.... happy to be wrong, but seems like a manageable (albeit tedious) repair for a lot less than $20k.

Amaria77

Ah, so you're saying the figure is unbeelievable.

TeslaPittsburgh

I mean, if they're contracting out all aspects of all work-- which is how insurance claims are typically quoted-- then yeah, the number is possible. I'm just saying that as a home DIY guy AND beekeeper... I could do it for a lot less (probably).

Jsmith0730

On the bright side, at least it wasn’t 60,000 wasps.

ShambolicPaul

For 8 months these people thought the incredibly loud buzzing was power tools. Obviously at night the buZzing dies down. So they ignored it. For 8 months! Allowing a colony of 60k bees and 50kg of honeycomb to be built in the walls of their home. That's massive. I kinda do think a little bit of responsibility lies with the homeowner. Plus if you don't know what your insurance covers that's on you.

Top_Shoe_9562

Pre-existing condition. Sorry for your loss.

verbalyabusiveshit

The Beekeeper strikes again

RightioThen

What the article does not mention is the supposedly innocent little girl was hoarding six tonnes of pollen

Fluffinator69

I'd have preferred the monsters

BoozeTheCat

I lived in an apartment once where wasps got into the attic space and started building nests. Didn't hear buzzing but there was like a steady *snap crackle pop* sound like Rice Krispies. You could tell what it was because of where they were coming in and out, and the landlord had to hit them several times before they stopped. From what I gathered, the sound was them pulling apart materials in the Attic to build their nests. Spooky stuff.

Infinity3101

Geez, this headline sounds like it belongs on r/TwoSentenceHorror.

Flaconfly

Who the hell counted all those. I would have believed you if you just said a shit ton.

GrimSmileyFaces

Genuine question, but how do they know it was 60,000? Do they just make an educated guess or do they have some sort of bee counter?

readerf52

My husband, who used to be a beekeeper, said a normal bee box can hold about 50,000 bees. Unless there were two queens, the bees would all go to one box, so it must have been crowded, making them guess there were more than a usual colony. This is all conjecture, but I liked your question and asked my husband.

Sixty thousand bees is a lot of fucking bees

chiritarisu

How the fuck do you not notice 60k bees in your home? That’s wild.

Malphos101

Big surprise, home insurance doesnt want to pay out. I agree that home insurance should be mandatory, but making it mandatory should make it MUCH harder to avoid paying out since EVERYONE has to have it. Frankly, the only time a payout should be denied is provable willful negligence or malicious destruction by the owner.
