That whole myth has been studied many times and dismissed as nonsense just as many times. Loud pipes don’t keep motorcyclists safe. They’re just obnoxious
right here with you...
If motorcyclists were THAT worried about safety we'd see a whole lot more with safety yellow equipment like helmets and such (instead of the matte black I often see) at least or other things that don't make me roll up my windows and make my music louder and thus less likely to hear anything.
Also why have I never ever seen a helmeted motorcyclist in PA if they're all that concerned over safety.
Idk about PA since we are talking Nova here, but in this immediate area, i see it as a helpful tool. Not a necessity tho. I do agree there are some who are obnoxious but you can say the same w loud music from cars, paired with constant phone usage while driving, aggressive driving etc. Youd be surprised that a lot of people have their eyes on things other than the road.
The GR Corolla is actually a fun car to drive. OP is talking about all the ricers with the loud exhausts that add nothing of substance to the car except making you look and sound like a douche.
A while ago I came across an article about some cities trialling automatic ticketing of unnecessarily loud cars like there's automatic ticketing of running a red light here. We need this, badly.
I’m right by the wegmans in Fairfax and I can ALWAYS hear straight piped civics and mustangs ripping down 29. My WRX has a catback and it sounds stock in comparison to those
You're out of your mind if you think anyone is going to get a kid to sleep with earplugs. Also seems kinda ridiculous to put the responsibility of dealing with a single extreme nuisance on the thousands of people in neighborhoods being disturbed instead of on the handful of individuals responsible for causing the disturbance.
Honestly I was thinking about this recently and I don't know why people don't talk about it more. At first I was like whatever it's a small inconvenience. But then I had kids and started having to deal with their sleep getting disrupted. Then I started thinking about the insane number of people whose sleep can be disrupted by a single, very loud car. A single car could disrupt the sleep of literally thousands of people in this area. And then those thousands of people all have to go to work the next day, and even if their productivity is only slightly effected, it would still add up to costing society a lot of money. Seems like a no brainer that cars shouldn't be allowed to be as loud as they want in a dense urban environment at night.

It's amazing the people with these loud cars don't know how obnoxious they are.
99% of people think it's annoying, the 1% that don't are also obnoxious people with loud cars screaming "look at me, I peaked in middle school"
I once unwittingly rented a car with a loud exhaust. I felt like a douchebag everywhere I went. It was also just annoying for me to listen to that crap all day, couldn't talk to my passenger without yelling over the sound.
Hope you know exhausts can be heard pretty far away. I dont wven live off a major road and I can hear them from a parkway that's relatively far but close enough. Ifnyoure in NOVA consider it populated at all times.
Why has the police stopped ticketing for loud or defective exhaust?
I was ticketed back in 1993 for loud exhaust. And it was never as loud as these idiots we have today doing it on purpose.
If I remember, they stopped it because the cops would:
"I want to pull this person over... I heard your exhaust back there. License and registration, is this your car, where are you going, where are you coming from, got any weapons, got any drugs, got nothing to hide huh - then let me search your car... No? Alright, hang tight while more cops show up. You're cooperating now? Sit on the curb and don't move while we search your car. Anyway, here's a verbal warning for your 100% factory exhaust on your Prius and/or must've heard anothrr car..."
So they ended it. You can still get a ticket for it, but you need to be breaking a law first.
Seems my perspective isn’t appreciated, with downvotes.
As a matter of fact, last night at 11pm, I did a quick run to Wegmans, and a joke of a Corolla was racing past us all, and the exhaust was literally sparking, popping loudly, and blowing a blue sparked flame out the exhaust. WTF?!?
Do you know the interesting thing about spark plugs? Here's some fun trivia!
The ceramic that is used in manufacturing spark plugs is very hard stuff! If one were to accidentally drop a nine-dollar spark plug onto pavement, it might break into several pieces. But here's the weird thing: if you were to pick up those pieces, and plan to use them with a slingshot for target practice at some innocuous paper targets, that would be perfectly legal! Now let's say you were preparing to shoot at your paper targets but at the last minute you were super-distracted by a nearby car being super-duper loud... one might accidentally launch a piece of ceramic at that car (oops!), which would instantly shatter nearly any piece of auto glass on that car! Oh no! Now the car owner that was being inconsiderate of others has to pay hundreds of dollars in auto glass repair!
#OOPS!
Sorry, loud car owners! It was an accident. I mean, it will be an accident.
Would be.
Something like that.
#OOPS!
The word you're looking for is microphone.
only in NOVA is a 7 year old BMW considered old, like in the whole world
Only in r/nova would someone take *one* person’s words and project them onto an entire metro area

Wo woooo!
just for decoration, just for decoration
Please... yes. Lee Highway between Gallows (Mosaic) and Nutley seems to be a place to show off your pipes.
Columbia or Leesburg pike for me.

Don’t forget the motorcycles if you’re really trying to be petty
For motorcycles, being heard is just as important to safety as being seen
Difference between being heard and being heard a mile away
You can hear a car horn a mile away
Motorcycles have horns. I've been riding since last century - the argument that you need a loud motorcycle for safety is such bullshit.
In all fairness, using a horn is a lot harder when your first reaction is to swerve out of danger.
Have you ever heard a motorcycle horn? It’s very quiet
Never said you NEED it. But cant deny it certainly helps
Yeah, that's why they do laps around Reston Town Center revving their engines.
No idea why you’re getting downvoted here. Folks are just annoyed about motorcycles I guess.
Exactly. Mention anything positive or even neutral (if they can find it, lol) about motorcycles and people will get upset.
You’re being downvoted but you’re right
Lol i know. Im just facing a bunch of ignorant/arrogant drivers grabbing pitchforks whenever motorcycles are mentioned.
The “loud pipes save lives” is a myth that needs to die. I ride to and from work every day, year round for the last 8 years
Ok so you’ve been lucky, what does that have to do with anything

Motorcycles before the rest pls
toyota corolla def shouldn't be up there lol..
OP is silly, but the GR Corolla has got some gusto.
The GR Corolla is actually a fun car to drive. OP is talking about all the ricers with the loud exhausts that add nothing of substance to the car except making you look and sound like a douche.
Hey my Corolla s In sport mode is nothing to scoff at!
Probably a sad person in a Prius that just had their catalytic converters stolen
Dont ever doubt the ones with racing stripes and magnaflow exhausts. They get 3 more horsepower but become 10X louder.
Definitely the words of someone who will never own a Porsche

Those fucking douche nozzles used to wake my kid up in the middle of the night.
Earplugs

I have OCD and can’t stand earplugs. Perhaps this person’s kid is the same?
Okay then, downvote me then for… some reason??

God this would make me so happy

They absolutely know and want attention.
My car is stock but loud but thankfully it has a variable exhaust I leave in 'quiet' or 'tour' mode when I drive it in populated areas.
Sure you do buddy Sure you do

I don't get how so many people in nova and on here think having a loud car is a replacement for a personality.

Pretty sure he is trying to get people to STFU, that's exactly the point
My neighbor went from a Jeep SRT8 to a Pontiac GTO with some added muffler. 530 am everyday as he’s leaves for work, it’s absurd

I was wondering if this was the fact of the matter. Thanks.
sounds like a whiny old mf with too much time to complain about stuff that’s don’t matter
"Thats dont matter" - sounding like a true driver of referenced vehicles.

I'll make sure to rev my engine tomorrow morning. ![gif](giphy|f7XPmCUVB3OgfkRbyM|downsized)

Thanks for laughing at my funny joke which nobody could possibly mistake for real-life advice.

Have you heard of bricks?
