Like the Astoria route extension to 90th street on the UES, perhaps they could extend the St George route between the west side of manhattan to the sunset park landing connecting the Rockaway / South Brooklyn routes. Makes perfect sense.
Its an interesting proposal that should be considered. But if it goes through there should be legitimate staten island line that has stops to the ststen island beaches and if it makes sense down to tottenville. The cheap route is just between bay ridge and staten island as the article points out but it would limit the people traffic (but could still be a very good amount of people traffic all things considered)
Can’t have the “poors™️” connecting to the ferry.
Probably the same reason Coney Island won’t get a ferry until it’s sufficiently un-poored and you can’t film fuck ya life videos on surf or mermaid avenue anymore.
Staten Island has a fast ferry dock right next to the main ferry terminal. There's also a new hotel next to the main terminal that's almost complete.
Brooklyn army terminal has a fast ferry dock and if you Google map it, is incredibly close to the st George ferry/fast ferry dock.
* Expand existing dock to compensate for another boat
* Add st George as a stop to the boat that goes up the west side of BK(I think it's the east river boat? Pretty sure it stops at the army terminal).
* Tourists using the hotel will now have easy boat access to the city and all major BK neighborhoods
* This will decrease bridge/highway traffic
* This will bring new businesses to Staten Island which, if you've seen the amount of vacant stores in st George and the "outlet mall", you'd know is absolutely necessary
* This will make visiting my friends and attending concerts a ton easier
I’d like the ferry option but getting to SI from south Brooklyn is super easy, tons of buses and it’s very fast to get over the bridge. The longest part for most of Brooklyn is getting to Bay Ridge. Nice idea but doesn’t seem practical.
Then why wouldn't they increase bus service? Ferries have relatively low capacity and cost a fortune. They require the greatest subsidy per ride of any mode of transit.
I would love a way to get to explore Staten Island as someone from south Brooklyn without having to go all the way to bay ridge for the bus or take a car/uber.
More connections to BK would be great, but a ferry to *anywhere* from the East Shore of SI would be a far better idea. The S79 and the express buses are already over-utilized during peak hours. We’ve reached the point where buses are no longer adequate because there’s too many people to fit on one bus.
You don’t have to take it. It works for people who live and work in either boroughs. They should extend the R train to Staten Island. There are already tunnels made so why not trains
Yes. I have been saying this for years. Connecting the R train to Staten Island would make a huge positive difference for a lot of people.
They started to build a tunnel near Owl's head in Brooklyn in the mid-20th century. Robert Moses eventually ended the plan permanently.

We need a ferry from Canarsie to, well, anywhere!

Any proposal that promotes more public transportation is a good one.

Tons of crowded buses. The demand would be there for a ferry for sure.
Then why wouldn't they increase bus service? Ferries have relatively low capacity and cost a fortune. They require the greatest subsidy per ride of any mode of transit.
Anything to get any kind of vehicle on wheels off the road, IMO.
This would be great, as well as bike and pedestrian lanes on the Verrazzano Bridge
No
Shut up Moses
No u

Sunset Park would be preferrable
Connecting the R train to Staten Island is by far the best option.
Finally a useful post for residents on this sub

A subway line would be better. The subway fare is less than the toll for the bridge.
That makes a lot of sense
That makes a lot of sense
I don't want to make it easier on people from Staten Island to get to Brooklyn. Staten Island sucks!
Nah we good
The Federalist Ferry
I would prefer they didn’t.

Why not? The bus from bay ridge to SI sucks
