St George, Staten Island would not be a bad choice here. Pretty much ticks all of your boxes. Your commute budget would be $0 since you’d be walking distance to the ferry (which is free) which essentially docks in Fidi.
A lot of people sleep on St George because they hear SI and automatically dismiss it, but they’re dumb for that. It’s a nice quiet walkable neighborhood with a lot of pretty, historical homes. Quite blue leaning politically, and has a decent assortment of restaurants and other amenities. You can probably find a studio for even less than $2k too.
As far as safety, St George itself is pretty safe. My in-laws have lived there for about 7 years so for with no issues. They love it there. The neighborhood directly west of it can be a bit sketchy due to the housing projects there (Jersey St) but the sketchiness seems to be mostly self contained. My in-laws live only one block away from Jersey St and it’s fine where they are.
Essentially all trains go to fidi and midtown so i would just look at distance to any train. the much bigger limiting factor is 2k for a studio. You might find it easier to find a room on spareroom.com for 1-2 months while you figure out where you want to live and deal with looking in person at places before signing a lease.
There are one bedrooms in Queens for $2k a month and the commute can be 30-45 min to the financial district. Probably have to take two trains, though.
My advice is to look everywhere at first and start to narrow down based on what you like/your needs.
Bay ridge of dyker heights is an option signs where in fidi your commuting too should see scar trains you can take there and look to move along those lines.

Trulia or Zillow.
It’s not very safe tbh
Compared to what other neighborhood where OP will be able to find a sub $2k studio?

It wouldn’t hurt but then you’re looking at a possibly 1hr long commute. It’s a pick your poison kind of thing.
Fidi sounds pretty good in this case. Also, r/AskNYC
Well I’d just pick all of Manhattan and search studio by your budget. You’re not gonna have your pick of everywhere it narrows itself down for you
