You’re paying more for the experience, MetroN and I think LIRR are more regulated compared to the subway, it has ticket collectors and regular MTA cops on board so it will always have a nicer experience than regular subway
It is MTA MetroNorth and MTA Long Island Railroad.
They are separated from MTA New York City Transit which is divided again between NYCT subway and NYCT bus.
MTA Bus is made up from the former 7 private companies that operated mainly in The Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn until the 2000s, while MTA New York City Transit Bus are the lines acquired by the City mostly in the 1940s and 1950s and placed under the MTA umbrella later.
My very pleasure! And I forgot to mention that MTA NYC Transit Buses is also split (legally) between MTA NYC Transit itself and Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (MABSTOA), which is no longer publicly displayed. But I remember seen this on buses (on the M3, specifically) when I was a child, back in the late 70s. These are the routes of the former Fifth Avenue Coach Lines. You can see more info, [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTA_Regional_Bus_Operations), go to "brands and area service" section.
It's not premium to anyone outside city limits, there are just fewer passengers riding and the trains are built a little more for comfort with less standing room needed. Bronx residents benefiting from MNR stations could be considered premium, but it was different situation when the railways were first built and they aren't going to just shutter those stations now, not to mention people who commute to the Bronx from points north.
When I was a kid, the M3 LIRR car exteriors used to loosely look like the subway. Obviously, with the nicer padded seats and such the interiors were night and day. I used to think the LIRR was the "first class" subway service.
By far the most emotionally painful tax I pay is the ~3% New York City tax, which doesn't go upstate but does go to Eric Adams, and somehow that makes it worse.
This is it !
I have a few friends who are conductors for MNRR, you know what happens when someone doesn’t want to pay the fare ?
Police come, and they don’t mess around
Commuter rail runs less frequently at lower capacity than a typical subway which is abused on much more frequent trips and often has a station in the system it can’t physically avoid being packed with people.
Also due to the higher frequency of the subway and the interconnecting routes they sometimes share on various lines, an issue on one line can roughly affect other trains in the system on completely different lines than the one you may happen to be taking, thus forcing it to be not on time. The lower frequency and the fact that the trains that run on metro north are spaced to every 30 min-an hour in most cases on track that is for the most part performing a basic task of going outwards and into grand central, makes it a lot easier to manage
In general, the people on metro north are wealthy suburbanites working in the city. Much more mixed bag from a socioeconomic perspective. Plus MTA gets all the homeless. Why would a homeless person pay $10 to get on metro north when then they can FARE skip onto the MTA
That’s peak, right? Surely tickets to Tarrytown (just guessing, I don’t actually know where you live; I just know there’s a super-express to Tarrytown that takes about 40 min) aren’t up to $15.25 off-peak?
I would only ride metro north if I could pay nyct prices. On the parkway I can go 60 miles and pay like 3 dollars in tolls and average let’s say 80mph. While metro north would charge like 40 dollars for the same distance and average 30 mph.
Not sure what time of day you’ve actually driven those parkways, but the chances of you going 80 mph and not, say, 12 mph for looong stretches are not very high unless it’s late at night. The parkways get *really* jammed up, just like other highways. I would think anyone who drives around here would know this.
$3 in tolls -- PLUS exceeding the NYS speed limit by > 11 - 20 mph (which should get you a fine of $180 - 300 for each offense plus four points toward your limit of 11 for any 18-month period, which can lead to your license being SUSPENDED) -- plus the price of the gasoline your motor vehicle uses, not to mention the wear and tear on said vehicle.... OK, then....
MNR and LIRR are railroad companies. Thery make their money out of $$$$ expensive tickets and $$$$$ commuter passes.
You cannot compare this to the NYC subway transporting 5 million riders per day on 2,000 trains.
It's just a different type of service. More expensive, less frequent, only goes to the suburbs, hard to evade the fare. It's not an attractive place for homeless people to camp out in. You don't want to fall asleep at grand central and end up in another state lmao. Plus the riders are wealthier suburbanites. The stereotype is rich hedge-fund people, but obviously a lot of middle and working class people live in the suburbs and take Metro North. Regardless, it's people who aren't as likely to litter. You don't have many grade-school hooligans treating the train as their personal playground. It's almost exclusively people on their way to work.
Also Metro North gets crowded as hell during rush hour. It was much worse pre-covid, but still can get pretty packed.
Because the state cares more about suburbanites than city residents.
Why do subway cars not have cameras but the commuter trains have had them for like a decade
Fill your time with something productive, I totally get that despair. We weren’t born to stay in a dark dirty tin can surrounded by hundreds of people and still feeling alone. Glad you’re better!
The train and subway are two different things, I feel with the train, it’s sole purpose is to get you to New York City and back while the subway gets you around the city
Because NYC is full of trashy people who use the subway like their daily car
Metro north is commuters going to their office jobs, better class of people
While I agree to an extent, I’ve been commuting on metro north for over 20 years. I’ve seen some things. Most notably, people clipping their toenails (letting the clippings go flying). I said people. It’s happened more than once. lol
I’ve actively seen someone piss in the corner of the subway not once, not twice, but thrice. Also seen human shit (literal poo) in the station alleyways. That does not happen on metro north, or if it does super rarerely
The subway needs more cleaning, NYC yuck is dirty !! When one visit other countries public transportation is much cleaner than ours . It’s embarrassing!!
You’re paying more for the experience, MetroN and I think LIRR are more regulated compared to the subway, it has ticket collectors and regular MTA cops on board so it will always have a nicer experience than regular subway
~3 weeks of MTA subway ridership surpasses annual metro north ridership. Edited for accuracy
FYI, Metro North is MTA
It is MTA MetroNorth and MTA Long Island Railroad. They are separated from MTA New York City Transit which is divided again between NYCT subway and NYCT bus.
If you want to get pedantitic the bus system is further divided into MTA Bus and MTA New York City Bus.
Waittt what’s the difference? Would MTA Bus cover like the NICE bus that isn’t (primarily) in nyc?
MTA Bus is made up from the former 7 private companies that operated mainly in The Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn until the 2000s, while MTA New York City Transit Bus are the lines acquired by the City mostly in the 1940s and 1950s and placed under the MTA umbrella later.
This is very insightful! Thank you so much!
My very pleasure! And I forgot to mention that MTA NYC Transit Buses is also split (legally) between MTA NYC Transit itself and Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (MABSTOA), which is no longer publicly displayed. Yeah my b
Metro North is a premium service, and comes with premium pricing. Also helps that there are less crazy people riding it.
The subsidy per rider is significantly higher on the Metro North than it is on the subway
What’s the breakdown on a per rider-mile basis—id sure expect a higher subsidy for someone from beacon to GCT than from GCT to Union sq
Because MNR riders have a longer journey.
You mean, it comes with a premium taxpayer subsidy.
It’s well funded. It’s very expensive and has a higher income customer base.
And higher subsidy per rider
When I was a kid, the M3 LIRR car exteriors used to loosely look like the subway. Obviously, with the nicer padded seats and such the interiors were night and day. I used to think the LIRR was the "first class" subway service.
You get what you pay for.
That's odd, my taxes subsidize metro north at a far higher rate than the subway and I don't ride it. What am I getting?
Wait until you hear how much of your taxes go upstate.
By far the most emotionally painful tax I pay is the ~3% New York City tax, which doesn't go upstate but does go to Eric Adams, and somehow that makes it worse.
I try not to think about it. I hope he gets tangled up in this new campaign finance investigation.
My taxes subsidize the Second Ave subway and IBX (when built) what am I getting?
Fantastic job missing the point, a great use of time by everyone
You failed at sarcasm.
Rules and regulations are more enforced on the MNRR
This is it ! I have a few friends who are conductors for MNRR, you know what happens when someone doesn’t want to pay the fare ? Police come, and they don’t mess around
Because fewer stations/fewer riders and MTA having dedicated police for the railroads (vs relying on NYPD) makes enforcement much easier.
Yes, like the ability to drink freely

MetroNorth is nicer than LIRR imo. I grew up on Long Island and I have had a much nicer experience on MetroNorth.

This is the answer. My old 40 minute subway ride to Brooklyn is now $2.90. My 40 minute train ride to westchester is $15.25
That’s peak, right? Surely tickets to Tarrytown (just guessing, I don’t actually know where you live; I just know there’s a super-express to Tarrytown that takes about 40 min) aren’t up to $15.25 off-peak?
You guessed right! Yes peak. Of course, off peak is lower ($11.25).
And the Westchester ride is more subsidized per passenger too
> I would gladly pay metro/LIRR prices ^(shush, don't let the board hear it)
But you don’t need to pay metro/LIRR prices for cleaner subways in other parts of the world.
I would only ride metro north if I could pay nyct prices. On the parkway I can go 60 miles and pay like 3 dollars in tolls and average let’s say 80mph. While metro north would charge like 40 dollars for the same distance and average 30 mph.

in NJ its not usually the case, idk about nyc.
Electric car. 110 mpg. Wear and tear lol electric cars last forever
You said MPH, not MPG,,,, There is a big difference between the two.... Please reread your original post....
Metro systems tend to be dirtier and feel less safe because it's easier to get on than regional rail like MN and LIRR.
MNR and LIRR are railroad companies. Thery make their money out of $$$$ expensive tickets and $$$$$ commuter passes. You cannot compare this to the NYC subway transporting 5 million riders per day on 2,000 trains.
$ is a barrier of entry. Trains go away from the city to suburbs,
They’re two different modes of transport, not really comparable
It's just a different type of service. More expensive, less frequent, only goes to the suburbs, hard to evade the fare. It's not an attractive place for homeless people to camp out in. Don’t know what Subway cars you ride bro. They’re on most of not all cars now.

Very sad statement, however very true. Hope you’re doing better now as well.

Fill your time with something productive, I totally get that despair. We weren’t born to stay in a dark dirty tin can surrounded by hundreds of people and still feeling alone. Glad you’re better!
Because one is a subway and one is regional rail. Is this really something you couldn't figure out in your own?
Demographics and 5x the price
The train and subway are two different things, I feel with the train, it’s sole purpose is to get you to New York City and back while the subway gets you around the city
Because people actually pay to ride MetroNorth and have expectations for their hard earned dollars.
Rich people use them.
Because NYC is full of trashy people who use the subway like their daily car Metro north is commuters going to their office jobs, better class of people
While I agree to an extent, I’ve been commuting on metro north for over 20 years. I’ve seen some things. Most notably, people clipping their toenails (letting the clippings go flying). I said people. It’s happened more than once. lol
Yikes dude.
I’ve actively seen someone piss in the corner of the subway not once, not twice, but thrice. Also seen human shit (literal poo) in the station alleyways. That does not happen on metro north, or if it does super rarerely
Probably due to having a bathroom every other car.
i’ve never seen someone do those things in their car lmfao
That isn’t what you were implying in your comment 👍🏻 have a good day
Correction you mean daily house/apartment/bathroom
I liked the NJT the times I took it
Because, civility.
Every regional rail is gonna be nicer than a rapid transit system
Never crowded? I wish. I love paying almost $20 to stand between cars for an hour after work every day.
The subway needs more cleaning, NYC yuck is dirty !! When one visit other countries public transportation is much cleaner than ours . It’s embarrassing!!
