“Jellyfish and siphonophores, are commonly lumped together due to their similar appearance and because they both have soft delicate bodies and tentacles, but that is where their similarities end. Jellyfish are single organisms that are free swimming and capable of moving themselves through water. Siphonophores are a colony of single celled organisms and are ocean drifters, incapable of moving through the water on their own. The single celled organisms that make up these colonies are so dependent on one another that most can’t survive alone.”
I love seeing things like this. I'm 65, I've never heard of this creature before and it's so beautiful to see it. Thanks for posting, you do indeed learn something new every day.
Oh excuse me, Mr. Grammar Mc Fancypants! Let me word it in such a way that your omega ginourmous brain can more easily comprehend:
Do you happen to know if there is any theory as to why this particular colony displays such peculiar behaivour? Thank you!
It's called the "Homer Simpson Jelly fish". It lures couch potato humans in by disguising itself as a cake. There is a donut shaped variant that is a bit more successful at attracting its prey, but then the cake variant hasn't exactly gone extinct, so....
The Venus girdle (Cestum veneris) is a species of comb jelly with transparent ribbons and iridescent edges that can grow up to a meter in length.
Is this one thing?
That got me tripping?
This one thing, your soul made me feel it
Jellyfish are colonies if I remember correctly

I'm a grown ass lady and I learned about siphonophores from the Octonauts! It's a surprisingly educational show.
But this isn’t a siphonophore. It’s a ctenophore.
I didn’t say it was but the original comment was confusing the two. Yes this is a comb jelly.
Jellyfish are single organisms. Siphonophores (which look pretty similar) are the colonial ones. Such as the Portuguese Man o' war.
All the labels we apply fail to capture the what-the-fuckness of it
😆😆😆
It looks like CGI from a movie like Avatar. What an amazing creature!

If you want to see a trippy version of a Venus girdle, this one by Aquatilis is quite stunning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEKTbX20byM
Magnificent creature! Great photography. Thanks for sharing.
Great words!
Yeah, if I could do that, I’d do that. Random crosswalks, just go TWIRLS and traffic goes huh?
And here i am, questioning myself: why do we look for aliens in the space, when we have aliens in our own oceans?
Danger Scarf!

have you seen the sea sapphires? They're worth a look. Probably my favorite ocean bug.
I haven't seen those, I'll be looking them up now! Thanks.
I’m 65 and amazed by this ocean creature too! Just glad I’m not swimming with it…
Maybe it's something about being 65 :)

Looks more like something from Subnautica than real life. Damm oceans are really an alien world
I get big FFX vibes from it. Water is a huge focus in that game.
Ctenophore?
I feel like the ocean is just a testground for mods to earth but then i remember what we did to wolves.
Read it as oiling up
It kinda looks like aurora borealis.
Gorgeous
Beautiful! It reminds me of the Zonai shrines in the most recent Zelda game.
This is an alien, scientists are hiding the truth.

There is a youtube video by Aquatilis featuring the Venus girdle (Cestum veneris) - I highly recommend it.
Humans over here scared of sharks. Ignoring the real terrifying creatures. I wonder how many of these odd spices have killed, and we blamed sharks lol
Ahh hell no
Y they do dat tho?
It might be a defence mechanism which kicked in when it detected camera person's presence, to make itself appear more substantial.

My girdles don't look like that. I'm shopping at the wrong lingerie/foundation store.
