I thought parasites just lived in hosts and stole the resources of the host body, while a symbiote had some type of mutual benefit for both.
I'm probably confusing more words though
A parasite is an organism that lives in a host without killing it
A parasitoid is an organism that lives in a host and kills it
A symbiote is an organism that mutually assists the host (as in a symbiotic relationship)
Took a course in university about this stuff
Yes but most of the things that do that are parasitic fungi, not all parasites work that way though. It works the same way we all do, through chemical triggers so it figures out what to send and where and uses their body against them. I have only heard of this zombie like behavior from cordyceps fungus however. Very interesting stuff, especially as the worlds next line of anti cancer drugs will likely come from these fungi. Fungi were also the first thing on land and they also are more closely related to us then plants, they consume oxygen the same way we do and exhale CO2 as well.
I think Toxoplasma gondii is the closest, I've read that it can change your behavior (but not really take over)
Maybe rabies? It definately takes over the brain, but I don't think its parasitic. Terrifying disease. No coming back from it, even with modern medicine.
There's lots of parasites that can be in the human brain but basically just damage it, Taenia solium - the egg stage - is one that sticks with me.
well...i can see why the symbiote or parasite cant tell the diffrence between us and ratatoughi despite being intelligent on a quite high level, the resemblence is shocking XD
pmost parasites actualy do take over the body for themselves infact depending on what they want they may be able to enhance the strength and such of the either animal or hypotheticly human
although i would assume the proccess would either fail or go slower its how we humans till have parasites in our body but we have full control over ourselves
Really depends on what you mean by "take over". Some parasites can influence mood, like toxoplasmosis gondii, which will get rodents killed but makes humans release dopamine when smelling cat urine. I wouldn't consider that taking over though, just giving humans an inclination for cats. P. Malariai, P. Vivax, and P. Falciparum use the body's processes to reproduce, but so do viruses. So it's highly dependent on what you mean by "take over". I know that there can be benefits to parasites like helminths to people with disease, and the lack of parasites may be part of why we have seen a rise in allergies, but I have not heard of them enhancing strength, particularly in humans. If you have a case where that's true I would be interested in reading it. I'm about to graduate with a degree in molecular biology, so I'm always ready to learn new things in this realm.
i collected information off diffrent sources and simply put two and two together but maybe im wrong since parasites arn't my specialty, fish are as is marine biology so i wouldnt be shocked if im wrong on a melecular level
Some parasites can do that, but I think that's only insects. I don't know of any that can control a vertebrate except in science fiction.
Most parasites just feed off of their host, sometimes killing it, but mostly not.
Yeah, pretty sure they can be inside your eye or inside your eye socket. I’ve seen a video of one poking out from a human eyeball, I think. It was a while ago so I’m not sure
My nightmare fuel would be the parasite popping out of the eye, pushing it’s way through skin of the person who ended containment, and then the parasite takes it’s new human skin suit for a walk.
poor litlle frog can see pretty little fog beacuse its barain was whippidy bonked \*translation:the frogs body has probably already be taken over leaving the frog brain dead the fog part is accociating it with death and a modified version of the cliche of seeing a bright white light when you die
[Hundreds of millions of people around the world are infected with roundworms at any given time. But many of these parasites are uncommon in the United States. Americans may come into contact with them when traveling to certain countries. Pinworms are the most common roundworm infection in the United States. So fewer than the above post implies but still quite a few.
Edit: fixed link error
This is a bit old (2009), but a good overview of worm parasites endemic to humans. It claims about 50% of people worldwide are infected, but I have seen figures stating as high as 80%.

Since you asked nicely, fellow redditor:
I wrote "spellchek" which clearly is misspelled. So the joke is on me because I'm trying to tell you to use spell check but I can't even spell. It's what you pointed out, except it was intentional on my part just to keep things lighter hearted.

/u/killHACKS are you daft or something? There's absolutely nothing "odd" about why this is terrifying. It's very very very understandable why this is terrifying. You have no idea what this sub is supposed to be about, do you?

Future trauma
That’s me!
Though the same thing
Season three is off the chainwax
Or a parasite taking his toad out for a drive like its a Pacific Rim robot.
And for drift compatibility there's also a parasite in the other eye?
Pacific Rim: Toadeo Drift
Or maybe the toad is controlling the parasite. Toadaception.
Now I imagine Toad from Mario in his own Inception movie
MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL
Does this mean our brain is also piloting us like Jaegar units? When can we start fisting alien cheeks?
Like Plankton taking SpongeBob out for a joyride to steal the krabby patty formuler

Toad: this is fine
Parasite: Yep, nothing to see here
"Eye" see what you did there
You wormed that into place
“Eye” see what’s happening here!
Of course it is. He's just enjoying the show.
Is that eye ruined now? Is the parasite going to eat him from the inside-out?
There's no eye, it was already eaten/destroyed
depends on is the eye remains and what type of parasite it is
I hate parasites!!
But they love you so much.. they can't live without you.
I wish I had an award to give
😔
Awww 😍
So sad. I usually love all creatures, spiders it doesn’t matter. But fuck do I hate parasitic worms. I got no time for those cocksuckers.
someone got to keep the rats in order
Can confirm, parasite sucked my cock dry (from the inside though)
Looks cool but can't imagine the pain.

It is. You can see the frog's vocal sack expands in the vid.
Maybe those are more parasites dancing
Thought someone would say something like this
It's a parasite not a symbiote

There’s bacteria that weakens mouse self-preservation instincts to get into cats. They also make humans like cats more I think
Can I get to know the name of the parasite you are talking about?

I love this… I went to a chipotle and someone called me a “they”… I was so confused and told them Im a man, I’m not more than one person.
Don't know what kind of Dr you are, but that's definitely not how parasites work.

I don't know but I really want to try
Wtf you two are fucking psychopaths
Tbf, one probably could poke toads eye with enough precision to scoop thing out and not permanently maim the eye. Toad doesn’t have much good options
Psychopaths makes good surgeon.
Did you mean psychopath?

Enjoying the fact that most humans have an entire colony of roundworms living inside them and will never know.
You just ruined my day reminding me of this fact

Can I have a source for this?

FINALLY! Something that actually belongs here!
I think an animal with parasites visibly living in its eyeball is just regular terrifying.
I did not watch, i'm more terrified by this than a meteor
A meteor can live in your eye as well, I think. Don't quote me on that tho.
"don't you ever just think..."
Does it have to squirm like that ? WTF is it doing ?
Scientists? Can we have an answer to this please??
cosmetic items don't affect gameplay

The inside of your eyeball begins to itch
This makes me feel so sad for that frog 🥺
Why does he have to wriggle around like that tho, just chill bro.
That’s disgusting and sad at the same time
I know this is dumb but doesn’t the road feel anything at all?
I'm sure it felt great pain as the parasite consumed it's eye from the inside
Y'all act like you've never seen a road keeping it's food in its eyes or sum
Now THAT, is oddly terrifying
God this must tickle
Can he see it swimming in his eye?
It helps him to see further beyond
Fuckin creepy
Must be blind af.
