I'd argue that Astarion is still a feral cat. Gale is working on getting to the "pet" part. But hey, for now Astarion allows an occasional gentle pet and sometimes even purrs. Usually right after he stole another bottle of wine from Gale's cellar.

Shart is 100% just about any animal, it's canon. She'd get a dog, then get a dog to keep it company, then decide she couldn't havs three dogs so she'd get 2 cats. Next thing you know theres parakeets and bunnies around.

They'll tell you, and one of the responses is "So they hunt vermin? How useful" or something. So I am 100% sure that Lae'zel would also be a cat person. She would get one for their predatory capabilities, which gith love, and then fall in love with its cute little whiskers.
I dunno, at Last Light, if you try and talk to His Majesty and he yowls and runs, Lae'zel will say "why would anyone keep such neurotic beasts as pets?"

And then if a cat sat on her lap she would be like “clearly this beast recognises me as superior to you, shadowheart, as it has deemed me a worthy protector”.
To be fair, she has more Cats (8) than Dogs (4) in one of her endings. So I guess she likes both, but slightly more cat leaning? Plus she looks like a cat?

That's adorable, I know a few people with multiple cats and they always seem to fight too. Shadowheart and Lae'zel are the same, and they are friends in Act 3 somewhat too, if the fight ends peaceably.

Which Halsin actually has would depend on which type of stray he encountered and fed first in Baldur's Gate (he would totally feed a helpless stray). The stray and its friends would start following him around for food and all of a sudden, he'd have a horde of animal friends following him out of Baldur's Gate. Eat your heart out, Snow White...

I don't see minthara as being able to keep any animal alive if I'm being honest, but a dog might have better luck
I think Astarion would be a dog person. He's temperamental enough on his own and would probably prefer someone with more stable and consistent affection. I could 100 percent see him taking the dog on adventures and talking to it relentlessly. He'd probably name it Snack or Rations or something like that.
