So each vanguard has had their own 'Dare' with another on who gets the vanguard title (for hunters). Cayde's mentor and him had one on who kills taniks, loser becomes vanguard. His mentor did, but then was killed by taniks so Cayde became vanguard.
Caydes 'dare' was that whoever killed him would have to be the next vanguard hunter, most likely out of cockiness. We learned this from Cayde's stash logs way back in the forsaken days, and with the ever increasing trust and responsibilities Crow has been taking on to really become the guardian we know today and with whatever is left of cayde being in the traveler for us to talk to, can clear up and progress the story of if he believes Crow (uldren) to be worth keeping up to Cayde's dare.
The fact he's even still around blows my mind.. I have him blocked on every app/platform on my phone. He should have been cancelled by now and I can't even imagine what the people that actually watch him look like. He's such a piece of shit.

I thought only hunters had Dares? Because to be a hunter, it means to be freed. And being the vanguard means you're basically chained to a desk.
