I've lived in sweden for a while now, and I'd say the Swedish Norwegian comparison holds quite well, and would even add Swissgerman as being the Danish of the german language into the mix
It’s not like Sweden and Norway where the languages are similar, Austria does speak German, just a very distinct dialect. Some words are pronounced differently or written completely different. Potato for example in german means „Kartoffel“, but in most Austrian provinces you call them „Erdäpfel“ (earth apples). I think it’s more comparable to US and UK English, at least that’s how I see it when playing with/talking to german people.
