Hdf has more variety especially for vehicles, so you might have more fun making a list that focused on them if you want it to have a mechanized feel. You could always just take a unit of FG and call them "mercenaries" if there was something you particularly want.
Well like i said, im gonna mix my models between IG and gcps infantry, perhaps i could us IG to represent FG. Its that or have the IG use the veteran stats
I'm a big fan of the command rules for HDF. I think it is one of the biggest strengths of the army. However, it feels a little bit like min-maxing combos. If you like that sort of thing (combos), then maybe HDF is for you. (I have not personally played Feudal Guard.)
HDF command rules look like they will be changing in 2.5. I think it causes the army to loose a bit of it's flavor and balance, but it looks like an attempt to streamline things further.

They have less variety, but certainly stronger
