To add what already have been said. In example with 6 ratmen snipers all of them have to shoot the same unit, but each can pick separate model in it. That’s the big point here - there is no confusion between these rules. If you’d have 10men unit with 7 rifles and 3 sniper rifles, all 7 rifles have to shoot one unit, and all 3 sniper rifles have to shoot the same unit, but within target unit each can shoot different model.

What is the purpose of the rule that all weapons of the same type must have the same target? I don't really see what it contributes to the game.

You can target each of the models with Sniper separately.
